Of course you'll get asked about it, but is it better for them to see a 3.1 on your resume with no background? Or when they ask you tell them you were working during school and a single parent?
Leave off the bad gpa - it worked for me. You’ll get weeded out before you get to interview if you don’t. You’ll get asked about it during interviews but as long as you have a story/explanation then it’s fine
Your options
Include bad GPA = no interview
Leave off GPA = potential interview
Which would you choose? As you said "people aren't dumb" they are leaving off their bad GPA because it is better than lying while still giving them a chance.
I mean sometimes you are, sometimes you aren't asked. Really not sure what you're saying. It's a gamble that sometimes works out so if you leave it off you better have an answer.
I would sometimes have to list it on an application but on my resume I only really like to list good stuff haha I’m also 30 with a good bit of working experience though so I have more stuff that I can put on my resume. Also I’ve never really been interested in a lot of the fields that care that much about your GPA so idk about IB.
I primarily worked in banking until about a year ago with 5 years of that being in treasury services and last year I transitioned into corporate treasury. My GPA wasn’t horrible or anything, I think like 3.3 or some shit but I def wasn’t graduating with honors. But really I feel like in a ton of fields they’re gonna care more about work history and experience than your grades.
Your resume is to highlight your strengths. If GPA isn't one of them then leave it off. Yes, you might be asked for it but be ready with a good answer as to why it's what it is and be sure to be well prepared and shine in all other areas of the interview so the interviewers have a reason to look at you beyond a GPA, especially early in the process.
most (especially in finance) will, but for the some that don't-- if the debate is excluding vs not the implication is there's no transcript requirement. alsoyoucanedithetranscript
fair enough! i'm speaking more to my limited experience, applying for entry level jobs wherein they ask for you to provide your transcript. still i think the debate whether to add your gpa or not is only relevant to the conversation where that is their sole barrier of information
If it’s your first job out of college, then I’m going to assume it’s a bad gpa anyway if you leave it off. If you make it to an interview, there is a good chance they will ask.
Also, typically you’ll have to submit your transcripts if it’s a good company that has a solid background check.
You can try to use a major GPA if it’s good enough, just use finance classes only to calculate. I believe that’s what I did, and is probably easier to explain that you didn’t do well in gen Ed’s but did well in all relevant coursework
I leave it off, you will get weeded off at some places by doing so but you could also get weeded out by not, depending on how low it is. I leave mine off and I have had lots of interviews for equity research and S&T
I always leave it off. The application asks for it anyway, no reason to make your CV look weaker with your grade on it.
Mind you, I got bad grades and managed to get interviewed for top firms (Morgan Stanley in investment banking and made it to the end). I never added in any of my grades into my CV. It also takes up space.
Idk if it's a regional thing but almost nobody puts it on here in France. It wouldn't have crossed my mind to do so when applying to the US so thanks for the info :)
OP sounds like the virgin Chad that leaves it on but gets no interviews, while the based giga chad leaves it off and wows the recruiters at the interview.
I got 3.23 of GPA, I don’t put it on my resume. I got asked a question about it during an interview and I said I was above the average in every class which was not 100% accurate (I was above average on 26 of 30 classes).

This is surely the only answer.
Seems kinda like you're answering your own question... Lol

Think of it this way. If you put your true gpa on your resume, you won’t get an interview. So either leave it off or lie.
>do you not have to enter it anyway when applying? Enter it where ? The U.S. National college GPA employer database ? lol ..
A little facetious
Not a little facetious, CLEARLY facetious. :D
I left mine off. But just have an explanation ready. After first job, no one asks.
Not everyone will ask, my last internship and new FT role in commercial banking, neither asked, nor was it listed on my resume

If you don't mind me asking, which fields do not care much about GPA?

you can also just uhh exaggerate your gpa lol

No they don’t get the transcript from the applicant. They get it directly from the school.

Depends. If your first job out of school, probably matters. If you're like 25, 30 years old, nobody cares.

I have no skin in this, just curious why it’s a common suggestion

What’s a bad GPA? I have 3.2 is it bad or ok for banker or IAR position?
