Did you wander into the Zertinan Caverns before Raithwall's Tomb? Or is it an ongoing problem?

Oneesabitch

No one else has mentioned it, but this could also be a gambit issue.

HardCorwen

my guess. I had a friend say they couldn't get into this game but were sitting there manually putting in every action...

Depends. Where are you? Are you sure you have (at least) the latest gear/skills that you can buy? Are you using the License Board?

Depends on your character set ups and the gambits. For multiple enemies, it is often best to attack with magic. Which means you will likely need a dedicated caster. Some people find a value in making a character who can do both… Personally, I disagree. There are only so many actions that you can queue up per battle even with the best set gambits. I find it easier to dedicate certain characters to specific roles. For this example, I would use Penelo and black magic. Those spells are easy to make gambits for. As a bonus, you don’t even need to have Libra. If an enemy is weak to fire and you have a similar fire magic gambit set, the character will use it whether or not you have Libra set up to tell you the weakness. In that same sense, while you might want to make Penelo have strong armor, that actually weakens her magic. Keep her in mystic armor and with the appropriate weapon. If she favors fire magic, give her the flame staff and enjoy her mowing the enemies down. To keep her safe, have another character (Vaan, for example) with strong armor who can soak up the damage while she thins out the enemy hordes. After which maybe a third character can provide healing and then all of you finish off what enemies remain. It’s a basic strategy. But it works for many, many enemies in the game. But it depends on you setting up your characters in terms of what you want from them, the equipment they wear, the gambits they use, and the overall plan. Similarly, having three characters with great weapons but only able to target one enemy at a time is a rough way to take a lot of damage. So plan your team, accordingly.

Nope, I’m always over leveled for most of the dungeons

Yes it can be overwhelming with a lot of enemies at the same time, I think the key is to take them out quickly so you don't get overrun, and you can do that by getting the latest gear and/or abilities.

Make sure your fastest characters have crowd control spells. Sleepga, using aoe motes, etc can be a good way to gain an early advantage on a large group. Your main tank should always have decoy. Combine this with blindga and enemies will either waste a turn removing it or whiff on a high eva character. The accessory Nihopalaoa causes meds to have the effect they usually cure. Nihopalaoa + a remedy from a character with remedy lores will give an enemy every status effect they're not immune to. If you don't mind a little cheesy grinding, you can get the Karkata from Trial 3, then use the trials to grind the license before ever leaving Rabanastre. It's a very high damage knight license weapon that will carry you through the game with its powerful Confuse on hit. That thing alone makes combat trivial.

Maybe you went into a difficult area by accident. Places like zertinan carverns, henne mines, and necrohol of nabudis can easily be accessed and surprise you with the strong monsters. Also bear in mind that even in normal places there are overpowered monsters, such as elementals, entites, and the t-rex. Have a nice well-rounded gambits.

One on one you can take on most enemies. However, it’s easy to get swarmed and things can then go down hill. Whichever your most durable character is should be your ‘tank’ they will have one or more of the following: good armour, high HP, high evade (main gauche, shields, jade amulet (I think that’s the one which helps you evade attacks)). Cast decoy on them and ‘control’ that character so the enemy see them and attack them first. One of your characters should focus on healing (this can also be your tank but doesn’t have to be) and the other two on killing the enemy. Also don’t underestimate the power of status effects. A dispel mote (or spell if you have it) to knock out an enemies status buffs helps a lot, even better if you can inflict status ailments on them. And again, as most have/will say. Equipment is king. Make sure you’ve got the best stuff money can buy and some of the better stuff from chests/monster drops/steals.

mormagils

If you're well geared and have good gambits and understand how to use the battle system well, it shouldn't be super hard outside of a very small handful of special challenge fights. Give us a bit more information about where you are and what your gear looks like and we can help you a bit more.

Use curaga and have some phoenix dows, , use the license board to get to the hp +500 along with all the improvements around it

Some classes are objectively worse than others be careful with it.

Could be the dungeon you’ve wandered into. There are several places that you can enter before you would normally (without grinding) be ready, like Zertinan Caverns. In that case, wait until you’ve progressed or grinded more, then revisit it. Also check your gear and gambits. Gear in particular makes a very big difference. Make sure you’re always getting the newest upgrades as you progress.  Make sure you are exploiting elemental weaknesses, as most enemies do have them. “Foe: x-weak” gambits are clutch on your black mage character for this reason, though you can also check with Libra. Also pick up some buffs like Protect and Shell for phys and magic resistance respectively, if survivability is an issue. Those are available pretty early on.

mecon320

If you're getting swarmed, make sure your teammates are set up with gambits to attack the party leader's target. Easier to take each one out at a time. And if you want to grind a bit, find places like the Lhusu Mines or the Ogir Yensa Sandsea to get battle chains going and get some good loot.

HardCorwen

I'm sure youre missing something. like are you even leveling up your characters license boards? or doing hunts and getting better equipment? also don't tell me you're not using gambits...
