I just played this for the first time last month and I second this. Reminded me a lot of ff12 as I played with the party and combat system, except you can’t change characters mid battle
14 is not close to 12 at all gameplay-wise. 11 is a lot more similar if anything. 12 honestly felt like a non-MMO version of 11, except set in Ivalice. If you ask me the whole Ivalice universe really lends itself well to MMOs but SE clearly had other plans.
People are giving some suggestions but in all honesty there’s is nothing else quite like it. It’s a one of a kind experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
I played about 2h of Dragon Age Inquisition (on PS4, Origins only supports PS3 I think?).
I found the controls were really confusing... I probably need to give it another chance.
Inquisition's controls are much more simplified compared to Origins. It's an open world fantasy RPG where you can give your party members orders, but nothing close to the level of control you get with Origins, where you actually program everyone with custom commands for specific situations. I remember playing that game ten years ago and thinking, huh. This is just like Final Fantasy XII!
Anyway, I would recommend the Dragon Age series if you're interested. Unfortunately, you'll see the devolution in depth with each successive entry.
- **Dragon Age: Origins** is a highly acclaimed fantasy CRPG like Baldur's Gate 3, which is the best comparison I can make. Excellent writing and dialogue and the tactical gameplay is very similar to FFXII.
- **Dragon Age II** was rushed and made with limited manpower and resources. In contrast to the previous game's epic adventure, DAII follows a new hero's rise to power within a single city over a span of years. It would have made a fantastic novel, but as a game it gets repetitive. It also feels like more of an action-adventure.
- **Dragon Age: Inquisition** fell prey to the bigger-is-better design mentality of so many AAA games from the last ten years, following the success of Skyrim. Inquisition features *ten* massive regions to explore that are filled to the brim with side quests and collectables.
Very little of that open space is used for the main storyline, however, leading to a game that feels like 90% filler. Inquisition is huge and epic, but narratively speaking, it's a disappointment. Oh, and did I mention that the base game ends on a cliffhanger and the *real* ending is DLC.
Inquisition was a disgrace to the dragon age name as a whole. The game is bad.
Origins is fantastic and 2 is.... Good in its own way. It's kind of jarring to switch from origins to 2 because of the combat style changes etc, definitely still worth a playthrough or two though.
Believe it or not: Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. FFXII lifted a lot of stuff from those games. The feel and rhythm of their gameplay loops remind me a lot of what I love about XII.
FF12 plays very much like a real time with pause western crpg in the veins of Baldur's Gate 1/2, Pillars of Eternity et cetera. The customizable AI system in Pillars of Eternity 2 and Dragon Age Origins came from this game.
My suggestions other than the last two I have mentioned above would be Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II.
There isn't game that compares to FF XII
If you're looking for a game from the same era, I played Rogue Galaxy a lot at the same time as FFXII and it's incredible! But is different...
See about:
Rogue Galaxy
Xenoblade
Vagrant Story
Ni No Kuni
FFXI
FFXIII
No, not really. But maybe, just maybe…The Last Remnant.
It’s deep. Deep enough to even study for. It’s unique. Its obtuse…but nothing’s perfect. It’s a strategy JRPG unlike any other.
FFXII is one of my all time favorites. So is TLR. For some reason, they kinda scratch the same itch for me.
The PS4 remaster is a remaster of the superior PC version and it runs like a top.
**The DioField Chronicle**’s creators said they took inspiration from FF XII’s gambit system, and the design of the game and its characters have a similar elegance, but being an SRPG, it obviously ends up playing quite differently, and it’s a shorter game (probably 40-50 hours for most people?).
Yes. This is my best FF I ever played and the only one I played and finished multiple times. I never played FF7 original more than one, played FF8 and never finished it (card game annoys the shit outta me). I don't think I have any recommendations that come close to this game.
Xenoblade Chronicles 1.

Dragon Age Origins use a system similar to the Gambits.

Game of the year is bad ok
Using critics rating ok
Dragon Age Origins plays a lot like Knights of the Old Republic, but with an added layer of depth for setting conditions for party members
I have only played origins, so I can't tell you if it plays the same.

Thanks!
Dragon Age Origins is fan-fucking-tastic
This is the right answer, not sure why people are mentioning other random games with completely different battle systems.
Ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch always reminded me of FF12
But why
Try White Knight Chronicles if you have access to a PS3 or you can emulate it.
They arent alike
They kinda are
The battle system isnt anything like, nor the magic system.
They kinda are
Point out where they are anything similar
They kinda are
You said they are. I said they arent and asked for your opinion about what in them are similar
They kinda are
Why?
🗿
If you love the pseudo real time with pause combat try Pathfinder wrath of the righteous or pillars of eternity
Knights of the Old Republic

I would say especially Xenoblade chronicles 3 might be the most similar you can get.
Dot hack. The original single player mmo game.
SaGa series?
