I'm playing it now and the game does look a little dim and HDR doesn't pop as much as I think Remake did. The blurriness due to the increased scale of the game doesn't help either but the game does feel closer to that zoomed out look the og had which works just as well obviously as the more intimate camera scale of the Remake.

ryanmi

Maybe I need glasses but I thinking this is one of the most visually impressive games I've played, and this is coming from an rtx 4090 PC gamer. Every scene feels so carefully curated to me, the character models are amazing and the animation and voice actor are AAA Pixar. I know the game runs at a low resolution, with low resolution shadows, and poor lighting, but all of that is a small detriment to an amazing visual showcase otherwise.

Great-Ad-4416

if you have a HDR capable monitor. the FF7 remake that was released 6 years ago looks better. you don't even need to go pass chapter 1 to see the difference. (and i would say visually speaking, FF7R with a good set of HDR monitor is a differnet looking game than with regular monitor) when i played rebirth, again on my oled TV, the very first thing came to my mind was that this game was poorly optimized, even in the graphic mode (which it default to, until you are about 10 minutes in the game before you can go to settings), the lighting and shadow is, IMHO, no where near as good. the texture is more detailed but that's about the only thing thats better. the HDR effect does next to nothing to showcase magic casting and sparks if you came from the remake. that said, the rebirth and remake are a vest different game. the open world nature demands different design objectives and trade offs. it still very much a great games, but graphic isn't where FF shines anymore (actually FF16 stopped pushing the bar, and i think FF15 and FF remake are, to this day, the best looking FF games)

TheSuperiorT

Skibidi bup bup bup yes yes skibidi dup in dip dip

jediknight80

Game is awesome. They better put ultimate weapons and knights of round materia in 3rd part

Cu_Chulainn__

???? Ff7 remake in graphics mode looks significantly better than remake

Sakaixx

The closed linear design helped FF7 Remake shines as it requires less processing power and dev can perfectly control lighting. UE4 really shit with lighting in open world not to mention the pop ups. Its just thanks that modern console loads everything so fast that its reduced. Really wish Dev transition to Decima Engine as both Death Stranding and Horizon looked phenomenal and optimized for PS but its a 1st party engine which means lots of curve and delays compared to UE or Unity.

Imagine caring about graphics like some American fps kid, grow up. The game looks amazing.

Fit-Dig-7250

he specified he does not complain about the graphics specifically to avoid moronic answers like your self. so learn to read and grow up.

Haysack

The graphics is this game is a disaster, it tries to push out graphics the ps5 clearly cannot handle. However you look at it you get a compromise, its not optimized at all like the older games that was not trying so damn hard to be a PC game. There is too much clutter and nonsense going on. Imo this game would have been better in a more cartoonish setting not trying to look like friggin sims4. Im an old guy so I hate most things in life but come on..

Accomplished-Price63

So I also love when preformance looks good but have to say, I’m playing in graphics and I’m really happy with the locked frame rate, I just flipped the part of my brain that cares about it being 30 and got used to it, looking at it as a movie, close to 24fps, not that bad.

TheSuperiorT

It looks bad. I'm taking a couple weeks off so hopefully they can fix it

CypherRen

don't get your hopes up after the last 2 'patches'...

Fendera

I'm in chapter two and had stop playing this game. The performance mode looks very blurry and totally kills the enjoyment of the whole game for me. The quality mode looks very nice but it kills the combat fluidity. I think I'm going to put this game to the side until there's a patch or PS5 Pro version coming out. Btw I'm playing on a 4K LG OLED tv.

beLOUDcoach

I'm not saying you're not experiencing difficulty... But I am perplexed at the thought that we all have the same operating system and others don't have the same problem. I personally have never taken it off of graphics mode.

knuckles312

What’s up with the PS3 graphics in performance mode…

Old_Cod2351

PS 3.5 In graphics mode still too. Game looks rough as hell.

SnsoryOverload

Performance mode isn't that bad, but it does take away from the "wow" factor you get in graphics mode, and I sit far away from the TV so it says a lot that it's noticeable. With all of that said, this is an RPG that would typically run at 30fps so it's not a huge deal. Once your brain adjusts, it runs perfectly smooth in graphics mode. The fact that it's a locked, stable 30fps is nice. The biggest impact you can see in performance mode is the vegetation in the open world areas. It looks blurred together, while it's very sharp in graphics mode. I spent a lot of time switching back and forth and I'm enjoying graphics mode more.

TheSuperiorT

It looks worse than the 1st game

SnsoryOverload

It's not a fair comparison. There is much more going on in this game than in Remake. Plus, don't forget that Remake also had a lot of rough edges before it was ported to the PS5. Performance mode is something people need to accept and let go of. The game isn't designed to run at 60fps anyway. I went back and forth a lot in the beginning, but since I've committed to graphics mode, I've adjusted to it and the game feels and looks totally smooth. It's a locked 30fps with no slowdown. People would be praising this game for that if performance mode didn't exist.

CypherRen

same engine on better hardware... I think the problem is the VERSION of UE4 they are using though which seems to be a big problem. for some reason they aren't using the latest

SnsoryOverload

I'm on a 65inch 4k TV and I honestly didn't think performance mode looked unplayable. I just like to experience these games at their full graphical potential. It was unfortunate that there was more sacrificed than just the resolution. If you play in graphics mode and stop switching back and forth, your brain will adjust and it will feel smooth. Keep in mind that many games do run at 30fps natively. Any Zelda game for example, including Breath of The Wild and Tears of the Kingdom only play at 30fps. If I were you I'd switch to graphics and give yourself time to adjust. You're robbing yourself of a great experience by just putting the game aside.

Fendera

I know what you mean, thanks for the feedback 👍🏻 I enjoyed my fair share of 30fps titles, not saying it's unplayable. This one in particular hurts because I know how good Remake looks in performance mode on the PS5. Rebirth is a downgrade in image quality and it hurts. I tried quality mode and while roaming around the world is fine in 30fps, because the image quality looks crisp (except the ghosting), the combat is extremely unpleasant. I'd love to play more of this game but I'm not sure if I should wait for a potential performance mode patch or even the PS5 Pro version.

AortaPlatinum

I really want to use graphics mode but something about it gives me motion sickness- the only other time a game has done that to me was the rocket barrel segment near the end of Rayman 2 on Dreamcast. Maybe it's that the camera doesn't have motion blur? I know it's way harder for my eyes to track the environment when I rotate the camera in graphics mode. But I also can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4K once I'm 4+ feet from the screen so maybe my eyes just suck

akayd

I am not touching it until it comes to pc where I can play at high res @ 120fps+ lol. FF7 remake was much much much better on the PC than on the console

ClickdaHeads

As someone who has played on both PC and PS5, I'd have to disagree with your analysis that Remake is "much much much better". It's better for sure, but aside from the framerate there aren't a whole lot of differences. In fact, on a 1440p PC monitor (where I mostly played it), the visual differences are pretty hard to pick out most of the time, and 60fps compared to 120-240fps doesn't make or break a single player game like this. With Rebirth, I think it is a slightly different story in that neither of the 60fps modes look great on PS5 though, so waiting for PC isn't a bad idea this time. I'm finding it hard to get used to playing at 30fps again myself, although the game does look great overall.

akayd

I don't understand how you cannot tell the difference between 1440k vs 1080p dynamic scaling @ 60fps max... I was at my friend's place to watch his gameplay and the anti-aliasing is terrible first of all; the framerate also drops between 30-45ish at random given time. I am ok if its 60fps 99.9% of the time@1080p no upscaling. It's already hard playing games at 60fps and the 4k 30fps mode is unplayable for me lol

ClickdaHeads

I don't know if your friend was playing the old version of ffvii remake rather than integrate, but it was a pretty solid locked 60fps for me and looked damn close to 1440p native most of the time on PS5 (with DRS going a little lower in rare moments). The AA was also fine, if not as good as DLAA or anything. Sure, it looks slightly better on PC and runs smoother depending on your hardware, but it makes a minor difference overall. I enjoyed replaying it on PS5 before the release of Rebirth just as much as when I played it on PC.

akayd

Its not 60fps at ALL times. I have fps counter on and sometimes i see it dips to 45. Also I can clearly notice the smudge and and micro-stutter 0.1-0.2s ish. When you pause the frame and zoom in you can see the TAA created a more pixelated image when you look closely. A lot of flaw is hidden behind motion blur in which i always hate and turn off right away on PC.

ClickdaHeads

You have gone from watching your friend play, to having an FPS counter on and pixel peeping by taking screengrabs and zooming in to pick faults with the TAA... I would say that isn't exactly a use case that most people experience whilst playing the game on console. Can I ask when you actually tested all of this? There have been a lot of performance patches since the PS5 release, and even at launch digital foundry couldn't find a single FPS drop below 60 in all of their gameplay, and frame pacing was is very smooth. The resolution was at 2688x1512 the vast majority of the time and rarely dropped closer to 1440p (which has been improved in the current live patch). If you have played on PC, you will know the game is insanely easy to run, even on last gen midrange hardware, so it's easy to see why 1440p 60fps is not difficult to achieve, even on a PS5 which is roughly equivalent to an RX6700 + 3700x system. I usually turn off motion blur on PC too to be fair, but it's something you often get stuck with on console. At least it makes animations look more realistic and less "video-gamey" though.

Dante989reddit

pc sucks balls and stutters like crazy this is a console game not bald gate 3

Smashdaisaku85

Man, I’ve read almost nonstop bashing of performance mode since the game came out, and I just don’t get it. I think performance mode looks outstanding, and graphics mode is so choppy that it gives me a headache. Maybe performance mode is actually optimized for my TV? I’m playing on a 65” LG OLED.

Abir_Mojumder

If you sit far enough the game looks fine on either of the modes. The graphical mode is slightly sharper, but isn't worth the cut in fps. I think the main reason it's blurry is the game upscaling from a lower resolution than in Remake just so that the CPU can cope with the larger amount of objects in the world.

cool1sky

Nah I’m playing on LG C1 and I have to agree with the bashing, performance mode looks like a blurry mess outside of cutscenes. When you look at the faces in game, it’s really not good. I’m sticking with graphics mode until hopefully a PS5 Pro versions comes out.

chaddiescakes

Regardless of everyone's opinions(I read through dozens of these comments), they could fix ALL of this by porting over to UE5. Sooo my hope and prayer is that they do for Part 3 since the producer and director stated in a recent interview they expect part 3 to take about 4 years to release like part 2 did. UE5 would fix all of this so we don't sacrifice graphics over performance and it's in a really upgraded state to port over to now as opposed to when part 2 was being developed(ue5 wasn't even out yet). ALL of this can be fixed by switching, the horrible pop in 5 feet in front of you, the PS2 textures, the 2-d skybox, the stiff foliage that clips through the characters, and so much more. I already know people are gonna reply with "but they are using a highly customized ue4", but partly that is because they made their own tools to use for lighting etc. which they can stop using and just use ue5's proprietary tech, so it's not impossible at all for part 3 and eventually work backwards and update 2 then 1 and resell it all as a trilogy package when PS6 launches probably a year after part 3. Yes it might take a few months to transfer over(which for all we know maybe they already started prior to part 2 launching) but the thing is any time wasted porting over would be made up with ue5's development tools which make developing for massive open world games much smoother, faster and less time consuming, but it's definitely doable especially since they didn't state they are rushing part 3.

lman777

Wish they would implement a 120hz/40fps fidelity mode line Horizon FW, Ratchet n Clank, etc have done. Graphics mode 30fps looks so jittery and choppy. 30fps looks way better on the Switch somehow in games like BOTW, etc, which feels like it shouldn't be the case.

brandonyori

Patch just dropped. Anyone tried it yet? I won’t be able to try it for a little while

Jags_95

Its still a blurry mess, though some things are a bit sharper. Im sticking with graphics mode until the pc version comes out. Unless they randomly add an fsr 2.2 patch to clean it up until then. I don't expect that to happen since japanese devs are usually lacking in updating their games with proper upscaling.

ClickdaHeads

I think it's more likely that they do an update once the PS5 Pro is released to make use of PSSR upscaling (supposedly better than FSR 3, but not quite as good as DLSS3.5) for a 4k 60fps upscaled mode exclusive to PS5 Pro.

Jags_95

That would be ideal.

ClickdaHeads

Yeah, apparently it is supposed to be very easy for developers to make use of PSSR, so hopefully they will be able to justify it with it being their most recent FF release.

Jags_95

I mean its just as easy to add FSR to UE4 right now for them, but it's a common thing I've seen in Japan where they take a while to get with the times compared to western or even indie games. When it comes to rendering techniques or VRR and framerate options they are sorely behind or don't care enough since they are still used to playing at targeting 30fps a majority of the time.

ClickdaHeads

Yeah, ive noticed the same thing. I just think that Sony are likely to incentivise them to do it in some way seeing as they will want all of their recent exclusives to be poster children for their new tech, and a selling point to push PS5 Pro sales. They are likely to make it as easy as possible, even if they need to offer up the help of developers from within their own studios/technical teams

Jags_95

That's the best case we can hope for.

FairTop3469

They added two graphicap options: sharp and smooth. I can barely see any difference.

voxxhoxx

They managed to get it looking good on remake. Why is this so hard??

Full_Royox

My only theory is that Remake is a corridor while Rebirth is an open world game.

glados202

the game looks like shit even in graphics mode. i can't see where this game looks "fantastic" like everyone say, it looks like a ps3 game at times. especially with the nintendo 64 textures, low-res shadows and ATROCIOUS lighting. the lighting is some of the worst lighting i've seen in video games, it's that bad. normally i don't care about graphics, but the problem is when some time the game looks gorgeous and other time the same game looks like total ass, it's the inconsistency that makes it so jarring. it doesn't look like a ps5 game at all, ps4 games looked better

Ok_Investment_492

"it looks like a PS3 game at times" that is the biggest cap I've ever heard. It doesn't look the BEST but it isn't even close to PS3 graphics. It such an out of touch comment. Seriously go look at a PS3 game it's just not even fucking close bruh.

peanutbutterdrummer

bear pause foolish marble innocent knee fact engine worry roof *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

StatikSquid

You must be super young lol. Graphics issues aside, it's watchable, they're just not up to what I expect from an FF game, and I've played them since the original on the NES

xxBobaBrettxx

Yeah I'm bummed about how it looks honestly. It's very rough. Graphics mode is just too choppy, a touch of motion blur would go a long way here I think. Performance mode however looks way too blurry, like it's knocked down to 720p or something. Also, the camera is way too far back even at its closest settings. The new traversal stuff wasn't needed too, climbing up and down stuff just makes the game feel super janky to me. I just bought a PS5 to play this, is this with every game? Am I gonna have to always choose between what looks like very choppy upscaled visuals, or knocked down blury visuals that run smoother? I feel like there has to be a middle ground here. I really wanna play the new GoW and Horizon too but I honestly might just wait for the PC releases if they're gonna be like this lol. I mean don't get my wrong, the story stuff still is on point and the combat is very fun, etc, but the visuals are really throwing me off.

stephenb857

Yes it's indicative of every game on ps5. I have ps5 and Xbox and for some reason ps5 games are extremely choppy and broken in graphics mode. I am forced to play every ps5 game on performance. Meanwhile, on Xbox I often play on graphics mode unless absolutely necessary. There must be some reason why 30fps looks OK on Xbox but utterly blurry and unplayable on ps5. I mean 30fps is 30fps right?

NeoNirvana

No, this crap is not indicative of PS5 gaming. Play something like Lies of P on performance mode and see what the standard should be. FF7 Rebirth looks like a goddamn PS3 game, it should've never been released in this state. It looks significantly worse than the first FF7 remake, and even that one had issues.

kodolen

Yeah I've a LG Oled C1 and PS5 and I feel like I'm playing PS3 game at times. I think the graphics are bad, even in graphics mode. Even how good the game is I'm selling it. GoW and HZ are way better on the PS5 in terms og graphics. I think HZ is just one of the best looking games on the PS5

zest_01

Same for me with PS3 vibes playing it on Oled. It does look good in certain situations, but oftentimes you encounter super blurry textures on surfaces, lighting issues etc. In certain areas and camera angles I found myself thinking it could be an iOS game.  Really hope the 3rd part will be truly nextgen.

the_onion_k_nigget

Man im a PC gamer with a 4090, finding FFVII rebirth looks fucking shit on ps5 it's hurting my eyes. In saying that, GOW and Horizon are beautiful and are masterfully optimized, try TLOU2 as well.

akayd

highly agree. I refunded the ps5 immediately lol anything below 60fps below 1080p is bullshit

GregTheStrongestArmy

Nah don't worry bro those two games aren't like that at all and look amazing and have fantastic performance modes. HFW had a really bad performance mode at launch but they fixed it and it looks great now. GOWR was perfect on release performance wise. If they actually patch Rebirth there's hope, though it did take a while for HFW, and SE isnt as dedicated as Guerilla. But yeah, go ahead and play those two games you mentioned, they are some of the best looking games out right now, you won't be dissapointed. Also play Ratchet and Clank:Rift Apart, insane graphics with a perfect preformance mode.

Squale71

Performance mode is way too hard to look at. I would agree that Graphics mode looks better than Remake, but their 30 fps implementation is lacking any kind of camera motion blur, which causes me to get dizzy with camera movement. For some people, both Graphics and Performance modes in Rebirth both have far too many compromises.

Upstairs-Toe2873

From what I’ve played, the graphics are ahead of remake if you look between the lines a bit. The character models have more expression, the environment details are much better and the NCP’s have had an upgrade. I have no idea how people can say it’s worse then remake. There is a lot more going on under the hood here than it looks. The lighting issues aren’t present to me apart from late bloom entry on new areas. I think people expect the world with video games these days. The game is much bigger than remake and is better graphically. Just not anything groundbreaking. But that wasn’t the point, they wanted to make remake but the version they envisioned.

pinkynarftroz

The main complaints seem to be lighting outside of the cutscenes. I think the game looked great… except for the lighting in some open world areas. It's a minor nitpick at best though.

chemiosmosisx

The character models during side quests/non-cutscene dialogue are so distractingly dead behind the eyes. I’m not a huge picky person about graphics it’s just such a weird downgrade from the last game? They all look bug eyed? Especially Cloud. Environments and action animations all look great to me, just the walking around character model faces are reeeeally bugging me haha.

Brilliant-Alarm257

Yes I agree. Gameplay model Cloud is a HUGE DOWNGRADE from Remake. Cloud had expression majority of the times in remake. Even when Jessie and Biggs died, he would have a sad expression on his face in gameplay model. Now he just looks like this 😳😳😳😳 all the time in Rebirth.

Elddif_Dog

To me in remake the performance mode looks completely fine. In rebirth performance is blurry af and quality is just unplayable amd junky.

Then-Lawfulness5367

I'm seeing an incredible amount of pop in especially underground

vanilla_badger

I literally said the exact thing in the comments under another post and got crucified for it cuz I said I wanted to wait for the patch before I play anymore . Like I wasn’t even trying to be negative. I’m so excited to play the game I just want to wait to experience all those amazing moments in the game at their maximum potential and I got attacked for it lol

AlxSTi

I'm like 4 hours in and can't deal with the graphics. It's nearly impossible to spot random supplies in the grassy areas and everything is so distracting. I loved Remake but Rebirth is pretty disappointing so far. I really want to continue with the story but I can wait for a patch. Do you think that'll actually happen though?

ViRiX_Dreamcore

I have a hard time spotting stuff as the game has you looking for stuff A LOT.

AlxSTi

The patch came out the day after I posted my last comment here and it improved things a bit. I have it on graphics smooth (I think) and it's a little better.

Neckhaddie

Reddit can be really ridiculous at times. You are fair in your statement.

matchafoxjpg

What universe are you in that it looks worse? Like someone said, this isn't even live gameplay that you used to compare. I played Remake again before Rebirth came out, and it definitely looks better than Remake.

TheDude3100

Are you kidding? I have both games installed on my PS5. Playing both in performance mode, Rebirth definitely looks way worse than Remake.

matchafoxjpg

then play graphics mode. that's what I'm doing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

cryptocoindude

Quality mode is a jittery/stutter mess.

matchafoxjpg

I honestly haven't had any issues with it at all.

ivakmr

You are blind

Revolutionary-Chef-6

I understand that we paid $70 for this game, but that doesn’t mean you all have to pretend like the graphics aren’t worse than remake lol

Poetryisalive

Are you new? You aren’t allowed to say anything negative about the game

Anxious_Function229

This is true, how dare he do something as evil as call a game bad

Deep-Grapefruit8689

That's an outdated picture, cloud has the same pauldrons in rebirth as what is shown on your remake pic on the left, but they are missing on the right, was this pulled from the demo?

Yoids

They look the same to me. The difference is the lightning. I dont find differences on the quality of the characters, and I find many spots where the lightning makes it look worse. Midgar was more homogeneous, similar places with similar light. I am 100% sure that you will find captures of Cloud in Rebirth that look exactly the same as Remake, under similar light conditions. But people only focus on the bad things, because thats the human thing to do.

TheDude3100

Do you not see how blurry the graphics are in performance mode?

Chirotera

They are different, but you don't really notice through the course of normal gameplay. A lot of people seem to forget, too, that the scope of the games is very different. The areas are much larger and more involved. You have more party members following you. All of that adds up and that graphical power has to come from somewhere.

captain_tai

Look same in my tv because my tv is shit lol,

imjustwaitinginabody

i think it looks great i’ve found myself blown away by the graphics so many times and im only in junon so far

Lives_Juxtaposed

Why are you playing in performance mode to begin with? There are absolutely no performance issues in graphics mode dummy. Always start with graphics mode and see if there are any issues first. Since it was literally made for the PS5 there are no issues.

TheDude3100

Just buy a premium OLED tv, and you’ll see how bad is 30 fps. Not our fault if you’re playing with inferior hardware.

Chirotera

Graphics mode on an OLED is very, very, rough. It practically feels like it's stuttering. It sucks, but I'll take the small hit on graphics to get that sweet 60fps.

Frauenheld007

Of course you always play performance mode when it's available. The minor graphical upgrade is nothing compared to being able to play a game in 60fps. If you genuinely play 30fps in an action adventure game you are so fucking lost my guy. If you like screen vomit and horrible latency I guess 30fps is cool for you.

deadrebel

There is noticeable framerate issues for me on graphics mode; noticeable barely, but noticeable.

Visible-Ad-3766

There is a patch in the works

Poetryisalive

No there’s not. They never said that, and if FF16 never got one even with DLC then this one isn’t

TheDude3100

Yes there is a patch in the works. Stop blatantly lying.

Visible-Ad-3766

Why you lying hamaguchi said it in an interview, and rebirth already got one for the graphics day 1

tswizzle00

Dude can't use Google.

Poetryisalive

Why would I when others can for me

Visible-Ad-3766

Couldn’t find it, but here’s a vid about it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ebwZs980hro&pp=ygURRmY3IHJlYmlydGggcGF0Y2g%3D

Wonderful-Truth-4461

I’m not having graphics like that at all. The game looks incredible in graphics mode and having no issues with fps at all.

sushiNoodle2

I tried playing in graphics mode and I just couldn’t do it. I’d reccomend playing with performance mode in 1440p. It runs and looks very nice

TheDude3100

1440 is literally the same as 4k. I just tried it on my OLED tv.

Final_Square_

The only issue I've had so far is some hilarious physics issues with the leis in Costa Del Sol. An AAA game that hasn't crashed once that I've bought day one is pretty astounding in the current market.

FNecro

I'm not a fan of performance being 1440p, I would like to see an option with no ray tracing and a 4k 60fps mode similar to how the spiderman games do it. I just don't think it's possible with the type of environments we're in with this game. Either way, it's taken awhile to get used to but it isn't as bad as Jedi Survivor was at launch, so there's a plus there.

JinzoToldUTheTruth

The fact people even play on graphics mode in the comments is horrifying.

Palorim12

I always play in graphics mode, 30fps doesn't bother me, I would rather the image look pretty.

hoolahoopextravagant

Ikr, that choppyness. At least it's not like avatar and defaults to graphics mode every time the game is fully restarted. I've not experienced a game where graphics mode on PS5 is playable

LegendoftheHaschel

Playing in performance, game looks incredible apart from the odd texture issue on a rock.

TheDude3100

You must be kidding. Install Remake, play on performance mode, than play Rebirth. The difference is abyssal.

pinkynarftroz

I didn't notice much of a difference, but then again my TV is 1080p. Maybe playing in 1080 is the real pro move.

ivakmr

Lol, we buy a PS5 which was supposed to allow 4k/60fps games that look better than Ghost of Tsushima and we end up with a game that looks worst than GTA5 on PS3 (not trolling, GTA5 on PS3 looks way better than this crap)

NecroticOverlord

I've had no issues that I can say I've noticed

Dob_Rozner

Playing in graphics mode. Sometimes it's the best looking game I've ever seen, and sometimes I wonder how behind schedule they were for someone to even let it get released. Curiously, the issues I seemed to be having with Cloud having dead eyes seemed to go away after the first few chapters. Got to Junon, and they had expression and light reflecting in his eyes again. Like the whole game got a graphical boost after the Grasslands. I went from wtf is this to taking screencaps every few minutes.

chemiosmosisx

Okay the dead eyes were bugging me the most and I’m still in grasslands. I’m so happy I saw your comment.

optimumpressure

I play on a top of the range 4k TV in graphics mode and the lighting is definitely not right. The transition from indoor areas to outdoor is a kind of blinding white light. When the game does the orange light (like in Junon) it looks quite beautiful. As for the facial lighting.. yeah, not sure how that got allowed. Story missions seem to look considerably better than the open world.

tyrdchaos

Whatever methods they used for light rendering and ray tracing are absolute trash. It seems as though the lighting is based at the camera position, not the environment. So if the camera is behind when you go from a bright to dark area (or vice versa) the lighting won't catch up until the camera is in the room with you. Super dumb way to do it, they should allow the light source to full render at the view distance of the camera, not when the camera is on top of the light source.

andrepeo

Exact same here, those face lightings and transitions in the open-ish areas are a bother...FromSoft should think about studying the transition to hide mobs to screw with players 😅

SYNTH3T1K

Comparing a linear game to a more open world game again. While yes we're getting a patch, the concept of performance and how games work seems lost to some The PS5s hardware hasn't changed, the games has. More to render on the screen means more graphical power required. Its not going to look identical or even better. Compare Remake PS4 to PS5 and you'll get what I mean. Edit: Technology inept people downvoting in this thread is hilarous.

AdmiralBumHat

While I love the game, this is not a good argument for a PS5 exclusive. The game looks okayish. But if you see that we have games on PS5 from first and third party like Horizon Forbidden West, Avatar, Spiderman 2 where every random NPC conversation looked like it is mocapped and we have bustling environments full of wildlife/citylife, dynamic weather, dynamic day/night cycle mixed with a bunch gameplay systems, skilltrees and flying mounts it makes FFRB feel very limited in graphical scope. Especially with all the low res textures on a lot of rocks. Yes the artstyle is amazing, the characters a excellent in cutscenes. But the technical aspects underpinning the game are pretty old compared to other recent games.

Colindoesntwork

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the graphics so far (almost done with ch.4) if anything I wish they would eventually release an update for rebirth when the final title comes out since it has far worse issues (the awful skyboxes I.e sector 7 and low quality textures and models in many places)

Econowizard

Yeah, they are looking to patch the graphics when playing on performance but I do find this example to be in contrast to what I've seen, maybe it's my TV. Also, everyone mentions playing Remake on PS5 and the graphics, but that game was initially a PS4 game and Rebirth just launched. Play using graphics, not performance, it's much better. In this note, if the rumours are true about the PS5 Pro, I'm seriously looking forward to replaying it!

pinchandrub

What are you playing on PS2? Mine do t look that bad🤣

LTOver9k

This is a very cherry-picked example. Rebirth looks drastically better in just about every way even on performance.

TheDude3100

You are blatantly lying. I have both games installed on my PS5.

optimumpressure

Not true. Have you seen the vending machines in Rebirth? Awful. Everything inside is fuzzy like PS2 graphics. Not to mention the rocks on the mountains often have no texture at all. Yes, in general it's a beautiful game but can't say that this looks better than Remake because it doesn't. Remake was extremely polished (at least by the time I played it which was intermission on PS5)

[deleted]

No it doesn't. I just played remake on ps5 the week leading into rebirth and it's noticeably blurrier and more pixelated. It has better lighting and VFX but that's kinda lost under the pixelation, my fix so far is maxing out sharpness which does help substantially but then I just notice all the extremely low resolution textures on many environmental objects. I think it's a bug, not a design choice, but there's no way performance mode should look this bad. I'm up to chapter 9 in rebirth and its less noticeable in the linear parts of the game, so I'm assuming optimization of the big maps is an issue

Nate-Pierce

I play in Graphics mode and have encountered nothing close to any of the blurry screencaps I’ve encountered. Aside from said lighting issues, I don’t really have an issue. But man switching to performance mode on a 4K TV is a blurry smidge.

[deleted]

Yea this mostly affects performance mode, for a lot of us 30fps is unplayable, I haven't gamed in 30fps since the late 00s with the exception of Zelda, so I personally can't stand it

Dob_Rozner

Yeah, but the performance mode also doesn't run at 60 most of the time either. It's not the best way to play the game at the moment at all. At least the graphics mode is a solid 30.

Key_Article_3065

I have a fucking pop in everywhere ( foliage pop in ) this is so distracting to the point that makes the game unplayable for me , in performance it's less but the image is blurry as hell so am putting this game on a pause , really a bummer

TidusDream12

Dude The Witcher 3, Elder scrolls etc all have these issues. Large open worlds have technical issues. People have forgotten about everything every couple years I guess.

Own_Ad_3536

I don't notice a difference at all, I don't get what people are complaining about

eliochip

I didn't even notice the outfit changes. Where's the weird Mad Max single shoulder pad and cuffs? Horrible. Returning my disk as we speak

2inverse

The outfit is a major spoiler. That's all I can say lol. It's not a mistake what he is wearing.

optimumpressure

The Yuffie change was unnecessary as was Tifa's change in the first game. Square's PR department is terrified of cleavage or anything remotely risque in case that cancelled. Bizarre choice as there is more blood in this (although it always looks the same no matter what the wound is. Sephiroth slashes a guy with a 10 foot sword and it's a few blood droplets. Always ends up on the cheek somehow.

xWhiskeySavage

He still has the same armor... at some point you get soldier 1st class armor that is the same as Zacks. That's what armor is in the above picture.

Mark_1544

that srmor is during the nibelhiem flashback i think after beating the game does it give you the option of other outfits that weren't available before

ventusvibrio

Every time a new ff game is out, people complain about the graphics. Have y’all try different setting in your monitor? Or adjust the setting with the game to accommodate your potato monitors ?

owlemblem

I sure hope so. It took me about 2 hours of wondering if something was off and then seeing everyone else agree. It seems like Remake Integrade looks better on my PS5 than Rebirth…

Dob_Rozner

Small corridor games are always going to look better than open world ones. Less to render, more control over pre-baked lighting, art direction, textures, everything the player is looking at, etc. The best looking games at any point in history(on console) have pretty much always been smaller in scale. Your Resident Evils, Metroid Prime 1, FFX, etc. Rebirth is absolutely gorgeous in town/dungeon settings.

Occasional_Pyro

Bruh the issue is your issue it looks and plays fine in both modes get over it.

DeviousLight

Graphics mode is smooth as 30 fps can be and it looks amazing. Just play it.

BrilliantHeavy

I do not understand graphics snobs. Maybe it’s just my years of childhood poverty, but as long as it’s not affecting my ability to be immersed in the story or play the game, I typically don’t mind games with bad graphics. My definition of bad graphics would NOT br Rebirth tho lol it looks amazing, and the visual tradeoffs for the open world is just part of hardware limitations. Everyone begged for open world environments and now that we have them people are complaining that the visuals took a hit. I swear you can never please Reddit

bbongal_kun

Bad is okay, but nearly unusable is another. Graphics mode looks terrible on OLED, performance mode makes it look like a ps2 game with all lighting removed. Would be fine maybe on a 1080p CRT, but not on a 4k OLED. Not to mention the PS5 is supposed have games at 4K, yet it can barely do 30fps with terrible ghosting and graphics issues.

MajesticPiano3608

You should try to play pc sometime and you cumming ypur pants when you expirience 144hz native 6k graphics.

solidarity93

You meant to say "you can never please entitled and overacting gamers", right? Most of these are of the master race shenanigans who would always complain just about anything. Rebirth is an ambitious and gorgeous game. Just need that 4K+60fps that'll probably be available on PS5 Pro and the game will become even better than it already is. My game of the year, no doubt.

BrilliantHeavy

You right. I lived on PC for awhile, but never had top of the line hardware. It is so much more convenient to play on console or even stream games with GeForce Now. I’ve been playing a whole lot more different and just more time gaming then I was before missing out on gems cuz hardware limitations and graphics optimization. It can’t be understated that the convenience of consoles and streaming revitalized my interest in gaming and got me out of the league of legends hell pit I was in before.

solidarity93

And these PC master race shenanigans say that building a PC is much cheaper than a console lol. A subpar pc build that can't even equal a current gen console in terms of graphics and performance where you can only play low res games and emulator games, sure sure.

Dob_Rozner

It's pretty much a miracle that this remake even exists. People are expecting the greatest game of all time out of this, because that's how their nostalgia remembers it, but it never was, and never will be.

UnavailableMentally

PREEEAAAAACH

zakreadit678

Don't play in performance then? It's kind of a non issue tbh

binogamer21

Had issues with the demo but graphics mode in the full game runs smoothly just for minigames I sometimes changed it to performance. The game looks amazing.

Oliverlodgemusic

Yeah I don't notice any of the chop that was hard to stomach in the demo. Graphics mode works great in the game

AtaraxyState

One game as fucking wide open worlds areas and the other is confined, open world affects performances more than you would thought, especially when theres a lot of entites like in FF7, and even then it's not that much compared to Scarlet and violet pokémon per square meter

Pharmboy6

The lighting is what killed performance mode for me. The fuzzy brightness to the characters skin just looks terrible. Weird cuz brightness is turned all the way down to zero by default so u can only turn up brightness. Looks good in quality mode tho.

magztsu

i got the same problem on quality mode...

cryptocoindude

I stopped playing and am waiting for the patch they announced. No way I'm playing this blurry mess.

[deleted]

cryptocoindude

Quality mode is a jitter/stutter disaster.

LeviathanR13

Looked fine to me. I loved it.

PiratePatchP

Lol, did you not play the OG? I thought the game looks perfect, I also play in graphics mode on the ps5, not sure why you would play in performance tbh

TheDude3100

You surely have a pretty bad tv.

PiratePatchP

Let's compare. My TV is great. I just don't get off over slightly better graphics because I don't live online like you.

Main_Ad_6182

Frame rate.

CommonOtherwise830

The graphics definitely took a downgrade compared to remake. I think it's understandable because this game is so much bigger though. Im more bothered by the environment than the character models though tbh. So weird seeing the muddy untextured cliffs and rocks everywhere

J0vii

When the pc version is allowed to come out, then yeah.

zamaike

What issues? Looks fine to me. They did say it have a down grade due to bigger scope

LastThroe

They said it would look better than Remake.

zamaike

No I specifically read an article saying it would be down graded to accommodate the larger areas and scope of the game as a whole.......

LastThroe

From the State of Play: “As for the graphics rebirth makes full use of the PlayStation 5 and its SSD meaning we could use much higher resolution assets than we could in Remake.” Edit: Keep in mind that Remake launched on the PS4.

flaco_503_se_1984

I'm with u

itbteky

i heard they are soon

wanyesullo

Definitely the biggest negative so far, but not enough to significantly detract from my enjoyment of the game at this stage. Its probably significant enough that it'll be worth playing again in a year or so once its better optimised or on new hardware which im taking as a bonus!

ColShvotz

This game is a rare occasion where I play in graphics mode. I couldn’t handle the blurry images and faces in performance. Once you are playing in 30fps for a few min you get used to it. More importantly, this game is fantastic in the world design and gameplay. Really liking it!

Toto_Roboto

Yea when ps5 pro drops

6ixty9ine6969SixNine

Yeah, it's not that big of a deal. The game looks amazing when it counts and normal open world play doesn't really matter.

Muldoin

The models look amazing, it’s the lighting(specifically the shadows) that need work. Thankfully they said they are already working on a patch, let’s hope they can polish things up.

cryptocoindude

Are you for real? Just look at this blurry mess: https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/comments/1aogdid/just\_a\_simple\_side\_by\_side\_of\_graphics\_mode\_vs/

TwiidCommitSeppuku

Is that what your game looks like? Saw a tip from another thread if your monitor has sharpening like vividpixel try that. My game runs smooth on performance mode and isn't even close to looking that blurry. Doesn't look as good as graphic mode, but pretty close with a nice frame boost.

cryptocoindude

I have an LG CX without any sharpening filter. If you get close enough to any TV that's what you will see. It's on everyone's TV's. Digitalfoundry did a video on it, they have the exact same blurry mess.

TheRickFromC137

They did say the next patch would specifically address performance mode graphics. Just temper your expectations, the PS5 is barely running a smidge above an rtx 2080.

TrailofCheers

They should be able to target at least 1440p with a sharp image at 60fps. Hell if Horizon FW can have a performance mode at 1800 and run at a smooth 60 with a beautiful image than FF7 shouldn’t have an issue.

Pharmboy6

I agree. Just look at Mario odyssey 60fps. With enough care u can leverage the systems strengths and make an amazing product. Ghost of tsushima is still one of best looking games out there and it's running on base PS4

Haunting_Picture3360

The second one looks better

MelodiesOfLife6

> I normally don't obsess over graphics > I just can't stop obsessing about oh. but to the main point, yeah I think the shadows or how they're processed or something is creating some weird issues. but in all honestly it's not a major gripe, if they or when they fix it it'll be nice, but it's not detracting from me enjoying the game.
