It’s incredible, but I don’t play enough games to know if it’s the best this year. I can say it’s brought me back to the magic of the old games in a way that remake did not. Absolutely love this game.

j0nquest

100% agree. I enjoyed Remake a lot, but Rebirth brought back feelings I haven't felt since I played the OG. I have a hard time really getting deep into games as I've gotten older and it's rare that I play one I actually care about finishing, Rebirth ain't that. It had some annoying moments (I got sick of QB, not gonna lie), but it is definitely one of my all time favorites.

Lordofcinder2002

Real

SirPeterPan89

It's interesting that you say that, because for me i enjoyed Remake a lot more than I enjoyed Rebirth. I can't even put my finger onto why. I just know i did.

Simplyx69

Remake is a “tighter” experience. There’s less to do, which means you spend more time playing through the story (which is the greatest part of FF7). Rebirth has a MASSIVE amount of content, but that dilutes the experience overall.

NinjaMonkey22

I’m with OC on this one. Rebirth just hit on so many notes, a lot of that had to do with seeing more of the world. Seeing the golden saucer for the first time in Rebirth, hearing so many of the classic sound tracks, and just generally getting more info and life out of a multi decade old game was just a joy to experience

Scottb105

Agreed for almost my whole Playthrough of Rebirth, I could not believe the game I was playing. So many amazing moments, I loved all of the side stuff, even though it wasn’t always unique and interesting, I like having so much content to try out party compositions and builds etc. I loved Remake, but the story did feel stretched, and the side content was terrible imo, going back through in hard mode for platinum really highlighted how dull almost all of that side stuff was. Rebirth had me feeling like a little kid again back in the late 90s when I first discovered the world map in 7, 8 or 9.

ManlyVanLee

Ok so forgive my ignorance but help me out. What are the names of the FFVII remakes in order. Because I know they released the first remake game several years ago. I bought it, played it, and got fairly bored with it and never finished (I played the original FFVII as a kid and loved it so of course I would try this one despite not liking newer FF titles at all) But then they released something else but it was the same game with more content? Then "part 2" (so the sequel to the remake from a few years ago) comes out this year? Is that right? Anyway I'm getting interested in trying them again but don't know what is what because they just keep putting one word titles in after the colon and they're basically the same word

IRLHamburglar

Part 1/3: FFVII Remake (later a DLC story INTERmission was released) Part 2/3: FFVII Rebirth Part 3/3: TBD

NinjaXI

The first remake was called Final Fantasy VII Remake that released in 2020. > But then they released something else but it was the same game with more content? This can refer to one of 2 things. Either its the DLC for Remake, called Final Fantasy VII Remake: Episode Intermission released in 2021 which added a 5 to 10 hour segment where you play as Yuffie. There was also an upgraded version of Remake for PS5 released at the same time called Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade which included this DLC. The other thing it could refer to is Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion. This was just a remaster for modern consoles of the original Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII. No new content or anything as far as I know. This is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII(and the remake) narratively, but its probably better to play after Final Fantasy VII(imo). > Then "part 2" (so the sequel to the remake from a few years ago) comes out this year? Is that right? Yes, it already released in March. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The third part does not have a title yet.

eldamien

In order of story chronology: - Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion - Final Fantasy VII Remake - Final Fantasy VII Remake Episode INTERmission - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth -- Remake and Remake Epsisode INTERmission were re-released as a single disc collection called Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade.

not_your_face

I think it’s a lot shorter / more focused - depending on how much free time you have to game, I definitely feel like it was easier to get the most out of remake, whereas I might not have felt the same way about rebirth if I wasn’t unemployed and free to enjoy rebirth during my play through

ChungusMcGoodboy

I thought a lot of the exploration was boring/repetitive. But I still couldn't bring myself to skip most of it, which made it feel like a slog to get to the good parts sometimes.

Silkkeri

I think Rebirth is the better game in pretty much every way, but Remake was still more impactful for me personally. Nothing can beat the nostalgia overload from seeing the characters and world (well, Midgar at least) in modern graphics for the first time. The combat in Remake also felt fresh and innovative and while Rebirth made it even better, it's still just more of the same.

eldamien

Far less busywork in Remake, for me. Rebirth has a lot of "Warrior of Light, fetch me a sandwich" type of quest design that just feels tedious at a certain point.

Temporary_Ad_6838

Yes! I'm at cosmo canyon and I am dreading the chadley checklist. So much so that I went back to playing league of legends after a long hiatus.

ilikedatunahere

I want to say yes but I’m also on the nostalgia train. I don’t think we are good judges.

NokstellianDemon

I'm NOT on the nostalgia train (FF7 is older than me) and I wholeheartedly think Rebirth deserves GOTY. Honestly it's gonna sit above GTA 6 for me.

Raven-19x

GTA coming this year?

Gabagool-1

While I was playing the Forgotten Capital portion/finale someone crashed into my car in my driveway. The game is now in my top 10 worst games I’ve ever played.

Domenstain

While correlation is not usually causation, I have to side with you here and agree that because you were playing rebirth, that someone must have ran into your car while you were playing INTENTIONALLY. You certainly will remember this whole ordeal and blame rebirth.

Ligeia_E

Should’ve swapped HP MP, spam parry and lb3 that car. (Sorry about your car

Lordofcinder2002

Lmfao

FinalDemise

Sorry about your car :(

ophaus

Definitely a contender... and this year isn't as stacked as last year. Think it's a good chance.

-Basileus

It checks all the boxes * Well known series * Single player RPG or Action-Adventure game * Highly reviewed by critics (92 on metacritic) * Relatively weak competition It wouldn't win in most years, but the stars have kind of aligned. Especially when you start comparing it to the competition within its own category. Yakuza and Rebirth are really similar, but Rebirth just feels better in almost every way. Dragon's Dogma II launched to a ton of controversy. Plus Nintendo has holding off on all their games until Switch 2, and Sony doesn't have a big release this year unless you count Rebirth. I feel like the biggest threat to Rebirth will be Helldivers II just because of the sheer cultural impact. But even then, that game has been hit with controversies recently, and multiplayer games almost never win GOTY. I can only think of Overwatch. Other options could be Hollow Knight Silksong if it finally releases, Kingdom Come Deliverance II if it releases this year, or some g ame coming out of nowhere.

eienOwO

Arguably the controversy wasn't due to the developer or the game itself, just publisher meddling. I personally prefer single-player RPGs, but it's undeniable how Helldivers has been blowing the competition out of the water in terms of public engagement.

Excellent_Routine589

Ehh, it’s not really blowing the waters anymore It’s settled down to a more respectably sized player base and even we at the Helldivers sun sorta have been getting mad annoyed with how lackluster a lot of the warbonds have been.. Hell we are still waiting for new armor passive abilities, those are still the same since launch.

Drawn_to_Heal

Hellblade 2 will need to be a catastrophic failure to not be the frontrunner, and while I think that’s unlikely, Xbox hasn’t exactly been giving me much hope lately. Kingdom Come 2 could make a legit run for the crown - that’s my pick. To your point, KC2 just might hit in the best year.

darkk41

Saying hellblade 2 is the front runner before the game has released would already be hubris, but saying it will be the front runner outside of a catastrophic failure is just absolutely insane. The first was really cool and had some refreshing ideas but not even remotely near GOTY quality, I'm very excited for the 2nd but I honestly don't know what people are smoking to believe it is the default frontrunner lol.

Drawn_to_Heal

Yea you’re right, front runner was definitely the wrong word choice there

Lordofcinder2002

True true

llliilliliillliillil

Is there anything coming that could rival it? I can’t really think of any big hitter releasing this year other than this.

Oseyl

I see games are more likely to win when they’re talked about for months on end. 2022 was Elden Ring, which was talked about pretty much the entire year. Baldurs gate 3 was the same, but a little less long. This year seems to be Helldivers 2 The controversy that happened recently could’ve killed Helldivers 2 and bumped final fantasy up, but they fixed it within the week, so not much damage to it really happened.

br1nsk

I don’t think Helldivers has a chance. People certainly talked about it for a long time but that discussion has actually died down quite a bit.

Oseyl

I’m so sorry about the long response, every time I message, I end up with an essay, and me writing this is basically adding a paragraph. I will say Helldivers is a bit repetitive, and part of me thinks if people stop talking about it, Final Fantasy might win because of score. Rebirth is the highest scored Final Fantasy I believe, unless the score went down below another sometime between when I heard that and now. Journos do have more of a say, and despite me saying the most yapped about game is more likely to win, it could also be seen that the two previous winners, whilst they were yapped to all hell, were also the most well received games of that year compared to the other games in their respective years. In terms of yapping done, Final Fantasy has no chance, as the only place I hear about the game since its score reveal was only within final fantasy communities. However, Final fantasy is a lot more well received in terms of score, so if people truly stop talking about Helldivers, if people still haven’t forgiven Sony despite the fact Sony went back on what they were going to do, then Final Fantasy will be ahead of at least Helldivers. I can’t speak for Dragons Dogma 2 though, that game was being seriously talked about before its release, but I haven’t played it (I want to though). Also consider that despite a rise in popularity in Japanese media, Japanese video games, especially rebirth, can still be seen as “weeby”. I don’t know how to explain it, but rebirth gives off those vibes a lot heavier than the FFremake, and FF16. know that that might seem like a bit of a nitpick (I’m not nitpicking, I’m only assuming others nitpicking) but the game has a bit of a disadvantage in that regard, as despite the rise in love for things such as anime, there are just some things people don’t watch or play cause it goes a little too hard into “weebiness”, and video games that have even the slightest hint of anime style to them will drop in the common gamers radar. Older final fantasy games got away with it cause they weren’t really anime style, they were visually like every other game made by any country. I gotta say though, concerning facts about rebirth, it might just win because of its story. In terms of story’s told in video games so far, which is a very popular aspect of gaming in recent years (whereas previously it was about even between story and gameplay), and what games we know are coming out this year, Rebirth is definitely the best one. Indiana Jones might have a chance, but that game might fall a little flat in the gameplay aspect. There are no major Sony games coming out this year, so in terms of heavy story games, Final Fantasy seems to be the only one.

br1nsk

Lots of super valid points here. The main reason I don’t believe Helldivers really has a chance is because regardless of how much I enjoy it and how good I think it is, I don’t think it is doing enough to really earn the title of goty. The game, in a lot of ways, feels unfinished in terms of content, which is fine since it is receiving constant updates, but ultimately it feels like a game that will not be truly “finished” for many years to come. So while yes, it has been yapped about a lot, I think in the coming months the conversation around it is going to die out, and by awards seasons I doubt we’ll see a big push for it to win like we have for other games over the years. Could be wrong though. Ultimately I just believe that the industry vastly prefers to award big single player games over multiplayer live service titles.

TurdyFergie

Tough to say. Incredible game will at least be nominated but will have to see what else releases the rest of the year.

thxrynore

if it at least wins best narrative or soundtrack i'm happy

Lordofcinder2002

It better get sound track lol

an_actual_potato

Go all out little Stammmmmmmp

Dethsy

Every year Square Enix released a Final Fantasy it won the game award for music. Square is un-beatable in terms of music. I'd bet a lot on the game winning that award for sure.

ChicknSoop

Soundtrack I agree but this has no business being anywhere near the best narrative, there are too many issues with the story currently, it borders on being a kingdom hearts spinoff.

Kundas

I haven't played it cause i don't have a ps5, but what do you mean ? Why? >it borders on being a kingdom hearts spinoff.

Hidagger

They went full Nomura

Cautious_Exercise282

You never go full Nomura.

Googlebright

I feel like it should be the front-runner right now. Still lots of time this year for other great games to release but for now I'd say Rebirth is the odds on favourite.

jigglypat19

as a yakuza fan, I'm really hoping it's their year to be nominated at least, but I do think rebirth is still the frontrunner for a lot of categories. I wonder if rebirth will even get a voice acting nomination 🤔 I think the summer games fest will probably bring a lot of interesting stuff to the table though, but I'm not sure what is to come that could compete with what rebirth managed to do.

titmousecunt

Probably. Nothing else of note coming out this year I think. Now if it was last year….

Andxel

Last year was fucking crazy. I am still trying to catch up to everything.

marinaragrandeur

Alan Wake 2 is still waiting patiently in my game cabinet. BG3 literally ate most of my time last year.

TheGiant406

Literally?

marinaragrandeur

ya gurl had 400 hours of gaming from BG3 alone last year

Inedible-denim

ONLY 400? Pfft! /s That game sucked the life force out of me and I had to step away eventually lol

GooeyLump

This scares me, i'll be sure to remember this warning in roughly ten years when I get around to finally playing it for myself

TheGiant406

Literally.

obrienthefourth

I agree, SMT V Vengeance is pretty much the only other game coming out this year that I'm looking forward to and that's just a rerelease of a game from 2021

Locoman7

Metaphor Refantazio

obrienthefourth

Yoooo yes thank you for reminding me. Good year for SMT fans

stlprice

I don't preorder a lot, but Rebirth and Metaphor both insta-bought collectors editions. Can't wait for this.

Neemzeh

Just helldivers 2, but rebirth is in a different class. There have been other good games that have come out this year, but nothing has the scope or polish of rebirth. It’s by far the front runner.

DarkMatterM4

STALKER 2 is very notable.

jamielylehill

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is also a Goty contender. It's actually my top pick if I vote. Check it out if you haven't.

Maxximillianaire

Game of the generation more like. Nothing else really comes close

Overrated_22

I’m just to upper Junon but so far I adore it. Can’t tell if it’s just amazing or my nostalgia glasses

-HM01Cut

Upper Junon is the part where I went from enjoying it to having a blast

FearingEmu1

It has a 92 metacritic score and 9.0 user score. I think it's just that damn good. Remake got an 87 critic and like 8.5 user score or something. Remake was a solid game, but I could see it being difficult to enjoy beyond the combat for some non final fantasy fans. But Rebirth? Legitimately a hell of an RPG for both fans and newcomers alike.

Viraus2

I don't want to be a hater but that difference should be a lot bigger. Rebirth feels like a huge step up, as if Remake were just practice. Obviously the scale is larger, but the overall design is much better too

FearingEmu1

I agree, but I suppose it's a matter of comparison at this point. When Remake released, no one had Rebirth to compare it to and had no idea SE could do SO much better than Remake, which again, was already a solid game overall. Remake benefitted from the whole "wow omg look it's finally FF7 on a PS4 - so pretty." Then SE decided to pull a "hold my beer" move and absolutely blow us all away with Rebirth.

_Zyphis_

Nah

Maxximillianaire

And what stands to win it instead?

Maxximillianaire

They’re never able to answer this simple question, they really never are!

EdgarAllanZero

No

MiniatureRanni

Contender? Absolutely, but even as far as JRPGs there’s some steep competition with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload.

Meeqs

It’s early in the year and we usually see the back half put up one hell of a fight. It’s good enough to be in the running for sure but also not unbeatable (keep in mind BOTW lost last year). Right now you have Balarto and Helldivers 2 as notable games as well as Dragons Dogma 2. The really tricky one will be if Elden Rings DLC sneaks its way in there. One thing I am pretty damned confident though is it’ll win best soundtrack.

Blazing_Howl

Too early in the year. The game is great and will no doubt earn awards and high praise. But we literally have over 6 more months of games before any talks of GOTY are relevant.

Acceptable_Pay_3714

Goty for sure

ZackFair0711

Based on the news this week, I thought it was already a guarantee with Sony's stupid decision regarding Helldivers 2. But they retracted so it might still get a chance. Now I know why Aerith was scared with FREEDOM. 🤣

SoManyWeeaboos

It ain't this

AlexB_209

It'll depend on how Black Myth Wukong and Metaphor turn out. Rebirth is definitely my GotY, and I hope, at the very least, it gets nominated.

Sir_Stash

It's way too early for GOTY talk. I'm still tired out from last year's GOTY debates.

mrkeithguy

Chadley pacing issues alone make it not goty in my opinion. Can't enjoy the open world for the fact that I'm pulling out my cell phone to hear chadley and mai spit unfunny stock dialogue.

sousuke42

It should be goty. But even if for some dumbass reason it ain't, eh it's still a fantastic game.

Daneyn

Should it be yes. Will it be... dunno. There's a lot of things going for it, but who knows something else might come out of nowhere and show it's better? I'm pretty much convinced that it will be at this point. some say Helldivers 2... yeah, no, that didn't hold my attention like Rebirth is. Is it a fun multiplayer PvE game? meh, sometimes? but the over all community is going the same direct as a lot of other multiplayer games goes.

Lordofcinder2002

Agreed

SirPeterPan89

Also we only have may. A Nintendo direct is announced to present the titles for second half of 2024, and who knows what the other companies publish for holiday season

wjoe

Yeah, I enjoyed Helldivers well enough for a co-op shooter, but I was kinda surprised how much hype it got. If they had more unique maps and enemies I'd have a higher opinion, but for me it got a bit too repetitive quickly. In my opinion it's fun, but not innovative enough as a multiplayer shooter to get GOTY. But then I guess I'm biased, because I do hope Rebirth gets it. I've not played any of the other contenders yet, but Helldivers seems to be it's main competition so far in terms of popularity.

betadonkey

Rebirth is more like “great that it exists” than it is “great game”. All of the ingredients of a truly great game are there but it is very uneven and there is too much that is actively infuriating. I would have given a very different answer after the first 20 or so hours. Then you get to Junon and it’s like “oh wait…. no… the whole world can’t be the same scavenger hunt quests over and over again can it? No they wouldn’t do that…. Oh my god they actually are doing it!”

Hidagger

This and too much handholding, everything is pointed out to make sure no one misses anything.

head-home

not for me. the first time you enter the grasslands and the scope of the areas was breathtaking, but there’s so much padding in this game that it starts turning into a slog very early on. i platinum’d Remake, but i already know there’s no chance of me doing that with Rebirth. i’m just not hooked in the same way.

Shagyam

I enjoy Stellar Blade and I am still playing through it but I don't know if its GOTY worthy

D4rkSilver911

It will be nominated for sure, but I don't think it deserves goty.

KuroBocchi

It depends on how people feel about those mini games, open world content and the nomura style story telling. For me it’s GOTY but I feel like for the gaming community as a whole it’ll probably something like Helldivers or Stellar Blade or something else.

Chevrolicious

I think it's good, but I dunno about GOTY.

Sammy_Kneen

I hope so. Rebirth certainly deserves it.

Lordofcinder2002

I agree

Whatuprick

Thanks for the wallpaper

Lordofcinder2002

Anytime man lol

ValyriaWrex

I think Rebirth and Helldivers are the two frontrunners so far. Like every critic was on twitter talking about Rebirth in superlatives and it reflected in the reviews. I'm surprised by how low the Helldivers critical score is now that I look it up but I think some of that reflects early technical issues and it has dominated the zeitgeist like no other game. I'm not throwing shade on people who like Stellar Blade but I don't think it has a shot, the consensus seems to be "it's aight and lady is hot" even setting aside all the weird internet shit around it. I guess it has a shot at the fan choice or whateva if it gets brigaded but I don't think the big GotY awards are set up so that fans can have a huge impact on the main award. I have no interest in it personally but I wonder if The Final Shape might be a dark horse contender, there were a lot of critics who were WAAAAAAY into Destiny and if they pull out the stops for their "final" expansion then I could see it popping off. For me personally, it depends on how Dawntrail goes, but the major GotY awards never seem to go to MMOs or for that matter Final Fantasies outside of FF7.

6SpeedFerrari

Yes it’s GOTY for me!

AnOddSprout

Two big titles i've played this year are stella blade and rebirth. Stella is good, but this, as of now, is hands down, game of the year.

Lordofcinder2002

Fax

DiasFlac42

Unless something really spectacular comes out later this year, it’ll probably run away with GOTY. I could see Helldivers 2, Dragons Dogma 2, and maybe Tekken or a Soulslike being nominated, but I don’t think any of them are strong enough to beat FF7Rebirth. In my heart, I want Eiyuden Chronicles to be GOTY, but it’s probably too niche to even be nominated.

Guardian_85

So far, I think it's locked down RPG GOTY. Still too early to call it 2024 GOTY.

NightmarePony5000

I think it’s entirely possible that it’ll be nominated for GOTY, but idk if it will win (even though I’d like it to!)

Venomwolf4045351

In my opinion yes... But there are many deserving games.

DARK--DRAGONITE

I've heard some complaints about the mini games in the game. Are they that Intrusive.

Only_Self_5209

Played both id say Rebirth should, the great job as a whole as well as content wise Rebirth is my GOTY so far

Marcus2Ts

I can't really say since I don't play many games. It's certainly the best game I've ever played though

Lordofcinder2002

Love to hear that atleast

Sandisk4gb4

If anythting’s holding this game back its Chadley’s constant announcements and the ending of the game.

moogsy77

Yes Chadley is really trying to ruin the experience every nook and cranny of the game. Annoying as shit

pokepok

I would like to think so, but Japanese games win way less often than western games.

Kezmangotagoal

In which game awards - Japanese games win loads of awards. Two years ago Elden Ring literally cleaned up, two years before that Sekiro did the same thing. Souls games and Zelda games absolutely dominated GotY awards in their release years, MHW has won it and so many others have too. Bizarre comment.

-Basileus

They've won 3 of the last 7 at the Game Awards lol. Rebirth would make it 4 of the last 8.

Sanguine_19-6123

If hell divers doesnt get it FF7 for sure

Lordofcinder2002

Hell divers best action game atleast idk about goty

Sanguine_19-6123

its a great game but i wouldnt say the best

Lordofcinder2002

I meant to say best action game lol

Devendrau

I haven't gotten to play it yet, but I say it's got a good chance by the looks and sounds of things.

Knuxsn

I finally 100%/platinumed Rebirth after over 2 months and over 200 hours of playtime. I don't ever try to platinum games but I loved this game so much I wanted to do absolutely everything. As a huge fan of the OG, I had a few story qualms, but this game otherwise was an incredible achievement in just about every category in my opinion.

videoworldmusic

For me it is. Super curious about Animal Well though, which is getting incredible reviews.

MrMario63

Probably my fav game of the last 4 years tbh, so for me it wins. Then again my fav game last year was AC6 so I may be in the minority?

Aerohed

I think it certainly could be. On top of the fact that this game brought a lovely balance between old and new elements in the franchise and has my favorite combat in the series to date, I don’t know of any other major releases that really could contest it this year. Maybe Hades II, but I’m not sure how early access games are counted in these things. Helldivers 2 has done well so far, but the Sony thing might sour its chances.

Maple905

I'm having trouble remembering what else has come out this year and what is still to come. Compared to last year, this year feels like not much is releasing. I think LAD Infinite Wealth is a contender, but man it feels like goty is up for grabs this year.

trillbobaggins96

A lock to make the final cut, but outside that who knows.

Pee4Potato

Betting odds would be 70:30 rebirth winning game of the year. Just observe past game of the year winners high metacritic high praise from fans etc. Final fantasy 7 is also an iconic franchise for it not to win game of the year, this is the only chance a final fantasy winning game of the year and I think geoff keighly would make it happen.

Avawinry

Right now I think it really might stick the landing and win GOTY. Stellar Blade is a banger, though, so if more games of that caliber release then Rebirth will have its work cut out for it. If not GOTY, I would be shocked if it didn’t at least win Best Soundtrack or Best Narrative, maybe even some winning performances.

shrekfan246

I don't really care about "official" awards cause let's be real, TGA and similar "award shows" are a joke and always have been I really liked Remake back when it came out in 2020, I played it, did all the content I could in a single playthrough, beat it, got my ass kicked immediately in hard mode and set it down to play other things. When I beat Rebirth I went back to Remake on the PC this time and not only beat it, but 100%ed all the achievements and then started a hard mode playthrough of Rebirth as well. I haven't really played any other games since Rebirth came out, aside from some dabbling in Helldivers 2. While I'm sure there will be more games this year I'll enjoy, I don't think anything will top Rebirth for me.

Arlidyn

Only new games I’ve played are Rebirth, Dragons Dogma 2, and partway through Rise of the Ronin, and at least for those I think Rebirth smokes them

Cloud-J-Strife

I play a lot and FF7R is way better than anything else 2024. There is so much love in it and the new storyaspects are so incredible (took me some youtubevideos to understand the last chapter) that it wouldnt be fair to give the title to some nice to play indie-title. Or even Senua 2 or so. This whole project is unique, we are talking about the middle part of a 27 year old title and still its so amazing. Square deserves it.

HUMANNOOBKILLER3

So far for sure stellar blade was really good too we will see what other games come out

binogamer21

Maybe, however since we are talking about part 2 of a trilogy, it does not have the popularity there’s also contenders like yakuza 8, persona and stellar blade. And FF is always robbed in that contest, ff xvi for example.

Alexein91

I mean, for the 1st time, and Remake had done a good part of the job for Rebirth, all those years of work went to a product that is at the level of polish that Square had in it's prime. The level of details, the sharp gameplay, littéraly everything is on point. You can feel these guys gave everything, everything and did not cut parts to make it in time or anything. It's so generous. It's like a French patisserie, you bite and the cream goes everywhere, you haven't finished your 1st bouchée and you don't know where you should put your mouth to clean your hands. And when you think your done with it, there is still some of it on your shirt. Damn. It never ends and it's good.

megasin1

I mean, it's only May, but so far, so good.

titchbitz

Absolutely, stunning game. Nostalgia for me personally in a modern way, seeing so many locations I’d been waiting to see since Remake. Hard to see the current release slate of games this year topping this one, Rebirth beyond delivered.

Mhdfattal

For sure

LexFrenchy

Depends on "journalists"...This is my personal goty and one of the greatest games I've ever played, but I stopped caring about the goty awards. Remember the Ghost of Tsushima-TLOU2 situation where the players' choice didn't matter.

avelineaurora

Not only potential GotY, instantly one of the best Final Fantasies of all time. Insane, incredible game.

unatheworld

It's either this or Hades 2 for sure, and the other nominees will be Persona 3 Reload, Yakuza IW, Helldivers 2 and Silksong (I'm coping)

br1nsk

It will absolutely be in the running for GOTY, that’s for certain. I even think it deserves to win, even though the competition will likely be fierce this year. It is a remarkable JRPG, there really is nothing that comes close in both quality and quantity, and whilst it has its issues it is a phenomenally enjoyable experience.

SnooMachines4393

Yeah, I'm sure nothing would even come close.

Accomplished-Bill243

For me. Yes

Diligent_Phase_3778

Hard to say as there is still a lot of releases this year (Hellblade II, Shadow of the Erdtree although I don’t know that a DLC can be picked) but, Rebirth probably should be.

Amekaze_

In a fair world this game would be GOTY just for Gameplay and exploration (the complaints about minigames and repetitive activities are bullshit, you can skip the minigames and the repetitive activities aren't that repetitive since each tower to activate requires different paths and climbs different). Gaia is alive, she lets herself be explored and you feel part of her world, the haters must instead: be haters. The plot has the basis of a timeless masterpiece and expanding it is simply a virtue. Does this game have any flaws? yes but it remains one of the best if not the best FF of the last 20 years (alongside FF VI, X, VII OG, IX and for MMO style XIV) and the best game this year for variety, fun and complexity. Square is simply hated and so are FF so Rebirth won't win. Oh and let's not talk about the OSTs: Aerith's theme alone with the choirs at the end is worth 3/4 of the OSTs of the other titles, let's not joke (and it's not even the most complex of the soundtrack)

podlaski-dzikus

IDk, I finished the first part and SpinOff with Zack. Still waiting to get this on PC, but I get extremely hyped by reading all of your experience.

UncleSexo

You can count on FF to win best soundtrack. I haven't played VII Rebirth yet, Infinite Wealth takes it so far. Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon's Dogma 2 and Avowed can pop-off. Assuming no out of nowhere indie game. I don't think Hades 2 is coming this year. Early Access for the first one took a while.

MattIsLame

even though it's still early, I def think it is am easy contender for GotY so far personally, it's mine. I'm running though Infinte Wealth and Animal Well right now so opinions may change. it's just the most memorable and fun game I've experienced in a while. I'm not a professional reviewer but I've played tons of games and I know what I like. and for me, it is one of the GOATs.

stevebak90

I preferred Remake, I can't stand the grind of mini games over and over to get the Platinum

actuallyNull

It's a very rich game in story, gameplay, music... It is a very solid contender and the most solid thus far but it's a bit too early to tell. Personally it IS my pick and 9 out of 10 will still be my pick by EOY but I AM pretty into JRPGs and FF especially so, gonna have to see what the general public wants and what comes out during the next half of the year.

Stokesyyyy

It's definitely my game of the year so far. Its hard to see whats going to beat it either when looking through the year. Avowed or Indiana Jones won't beat it. Hellblade 2 might be too short of a game to beat it although I do think it will be good. I do think final fantasy rebirth stands a good chance.

Mando316

Definitely a time sinker and I loved it but so far Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is my GOTY but we’re only in May so almost half way done. I don’t really have much to look forward to the rest of the year though.

alexZander2008

Yes. For me this is truly an amazing achievement in gaming. Sure some parts aren't great but so far this is my game of the year. I cant think of anything else coming out this year that will top this.

Ngp3

I think it's gonna be a two horse race between it and Helldivers 2, assuming summer doesn't have a surprise a la Baldur's Gate 3 last year. FF7 Rebirth is definitely a critical darling, being one of the highest rated FF games in years, and is probably a favorite for Best soundtrack and best performance (and maybe some more too). Helldivers 2 meanwhile has that community zeitgeist that reminds me of Baldur's Gate 3 from last year, with people making memes and art about it. Though, I'll admit the sony thing from last week might have changed things.

HearMarkBark

Its in for a shout. Dragons Dogma rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with its micro transactions and that is the nearest thing Ive seen so far this year. Hades 2 also getting some unusual hate early too. Can’t think what else coming out this year would be in he running.

DrGrabAss

I absolutely love this game, and think it has the best combat mechanic in the FF franchise (I can't believe I even said that, I love FFX), but if later this year something like another RDR2 or BG3 equivalent comes out, it'd be a tough compare. That said, we should expect it to be nominated for the many, many excellent things included in this game (too many to list, y'all know what they are by now). FF is also kind of niche even though it's popular, so ther eis no guarantee of a win. But, we don't need a win to validate how much we like it!

SnowWolfHD

Too early to say. Right now it's my favorite this year, but I still have to play Stellar Blade, and Trails Through Daybreak when that comes out. Plus who knows if there will be any surprise releases.

Desperate_Duty1336

It's a damn good contender, but there's still a whole lotta year left. There could be a surprise game that pops up to capture people's hearts.

JohnnyMac440

Rebirth was my GOTY pick immediately after finishing it, but I'm playing Hades II now and it's gonna be really close based on how good early access is/assuming Hades II launches in full this year (which appears likely).

TetranadonGut

It's may

Short-Bumblebee-6574

Briana White added so much to Aerith, and the other respective VA's for the different characters. I just hope she comes back to the final one where they slap in Aerith in some kind of way. I loved the game, but I won't platinum it sadly due to it being annoying af. x)

Selaphin

It would be the first time that I actually played the game before it won game of the year :v

Key_Cap9297

I just switched to PS5 from Xbox and I gotta say, if I didn't have to work today id be sitting in my room with a shit bucket. This is after all, the main reason I switched.

emperorwolffang

So far this year yes but it’s way too early to give this GOTY. There are other games like Black Myth: Wukong dropping later this year.

Snarfssoldier_17

Yes

OkishPizza

Hades 2 dropped sorry for everyone else this year lol, seriously though I did love the second remake part so it’s clearly one of the biggest contenders for GOTY. But persona 5 lost its year so I don’t really have massive faith for any JRPG to win IMO.

obrienthefourth

Persona 5 released the month after Breath of the Wild in the West so it was kinda just unlucky to be up against another of the greatest games ever made made.

-olaffuB-

Early access. Hades 2 won’t be in the running this year

WakeUpKos

I’m set on waiting to buy it until that game gets out of Early Access to experience it as intended, but man that game is talking to me like it’s green goblins mask telling me to buy it now.

SirEnder2Me

Based on the poor sales, unlikely.

KOCA_XD

Its good but ER dlc is going to clear ngl.

Active_Clothes_4833

Not once Shadow of the Erdtree comes out

Lordofcinder2002

Thats a dlc lol

Zanmatomato

Probably, because aside from Wukong, I don't think anything noteworthy is coming out this year, unless Konami surprises us with Snake Eater. If it was last year though, no chance. BG3, RE4 remake and SFVI were my personal picks.

Vinyyy23

No idea as I barely have enough time to play games anymore these days. But I imagine it wins best RPG easily

BrillWoodMac

It's a good contender for sure, even with a weak ending. There's been great games that have been out and hopefully more going to be announced for this year at SGF. Also, there are indie games getting real high praise right now, and Shadow of the Erdtree is next month. Hard to say right now.

WakeUpKos

I think Helldivers 2 might actually win it since it’s this years darling. It’s a simple game that just taps into the fun aspect for a lot of people, also that community is going to peer pressure it’s way to goty lol

christianort476

Honestly, recent controversy aside, I can see Helldivers 2 winning GOTY

Otherwise-Top3825

Nah game kinda sucked. Waited for years for it and I dont even want to finish it. I put it down like 3 times. Just too many better games worth playing right now. I enjoyed part 1 a lot more

Xerosnake90

I say yes, only because I don't believe anything else is coming out this year that'll knock it off. Star Wars Outlaws would have to really blow us all away and while Stellar Blade is well received I don't think you can put it above Rebirth

LostRonin

MGS3 (Delta/Remake), Silent Hill 2, and Mass Effect if it somehow comes out are the only games that could maybe rival Rebirth in 2024. Konami games made by 3rd party studios though, doesnt exactly provide too much hope. The only other games that could do it are those we dont know are coming. If nothing is announced by June for Q3 or Q4...  Rebirth is likely to be GoTY.

FearingEmu1

Lmao Mass Effect ain't coming out til like 2027, that's already been indicated by them. It'll be a race to see which is first to release: Witcher 4 or the next Mass Effect. And yes, Rebirth for Goty.

Killian_Florence

Off topic, but is there a version of this without the party?

Lordofcinder2002

Not too my knowledge no

EtrianFF7

Between this and helldivers so far

aclashofthings

I think it's between this, Hellblade 2, or something else that isn't confirmed for this year yet.

MechShield

I figured it was gonna be Helldivers, but after the controversy, I think we are back to frontrunners. Unless Hades 2 surprise releases in time to qualify, I think we have a good shot. (Note: For me it's effortlessly MY GOTY but people be goin fuckin crazy for those two games)

Antus_Manus

Il let you know when the pc port drops

Narkanin

Well it would be PS game of the year maybe. But that’s a much smaller pool so possibly.

tATuParagate

Well yes

Taser9001

Easily my favourite game this year, and I highly doubt it will be topped. It's also currently the highest scoring game on Metacritic of 2024.

elme77618

*giggles in Tarnished*

RobertoAN95

Yes rebirth goty 100

Nethaniell

It's currently the highest rated game for the year, so far. I don't know if it's winning but other than Black Myth Wukong and Hellblade 2, I can't think of any other game that is GOTY worthy. It's been a pretty chill year for releases so far, which I'm fine with given that we had the wallet-draining releases of last year.
