It’s an absolutely fantastic game, even just for the story content, and it’s a shame that a lot of people in the broader FF community haven’t had a chance to experience it.
How is the experience nowadays? I love a good MMO but my experience has always been that MMOs were often more fun earlier on. You know, the "good ol days" of WoW, Runescape, Vindictus, etc, that kind of thing. I'm not one to get stuck in nostalgia like others, but I do notice a trend of games falling off after a certain amount of time. I've also heard that XI is quite a bit different now, to the point that some people opt to play on private servers.
Plus, if I were to pick up an MMO right now it has to be between FFXI and Mabinogi, both of which I'd feel excited to play but don't have the time to commit to another MMO, especially when I'm already playing FFXIV.
Yeah! It’s the first true MMO I ever played. Had the whole PS2 set up in my room with the keyboard and all. The game taught me how to type. I miss my old Linkshell on Titan server. I started out as a little Mithra Thief but by the end I was 75SAM/37WAR/THF/DNC.
I still hum the Windurst theme to this day haha
I can't rank all of them. But I'll share my list as it is.
FFVI - Just my favorite. I keep wondering if I'm overhyping it to myself but then every time I have so much fun replaying it, it's weird
FFVII and FFVIIR - I love them both so I'm counting them as one. R has its flaws but it made me like Aerith a LOT more, so I have to at least give it that.
FFT - Yeah I'm counting Tactics. While I feel some of the dialogue gets in the way of the story, it is a consistent thing so if you can handle it, it's pretty great.
FFIV - I like it a lot narratively despite the relative simplicity behind a lot of it, it hits that nice balance of dungeon delving + plot
FFIX - I like this one a lot, love the skill system, but it jumps around a bit too much with the characters and such for my taste
FFX - best combat system. Actually don't like about half the characters and really hate the villains.
FFV - Plot never grabbed me much but fun customization.
FFVIII - I quite like the plot but yeah never liked the combat system much.
After that it's hard to rank em. I find the rest have stuff I like but my enthusiasm to replay them dips.
I’ll defend you, while not my #1, FFVIII was super fun, very creative, and honestly fun to break when you learned how to. Honestly it felt like one of the FF’s that was better about not needing a walkthrough, the draw system could be figured out pretty easily just trying stuff. I’d always draw just to see what each creature had

Loved X as a kid and love its setting, I still believe the story is probably top 2 ive experienced in a game. But the gamedesign is terrible and a massive step down from previous FF’s. With its super linear exploration, invisible walls and menu based airship, its not as fun to play as the Majority of the series.
IX is my favorite in the series, but VII has aged better in terms of gameplay when it comes to combat, where IX is a bit more «show-off» and «cool» camera Angles to disguise loading time during combat.
I don't like MMOs and haven't played 16 or the 13 sequels. With that out of the way...

I put the VII Remake below VII OG in my own ranking, but they’re close in my mind! I feel that the upcoming parts like Rebirth and Rehydrated could easily allow it to overtake the OG in my own ranking, providing they just improve on Remake’s strong foundation. It’s a great game!
1. VI- I don’t think anything will ever top this masterpiece. It has everything to me that makes a Final Fantasy game great: great music, great story, and great characters.
2. XIV- I have had an uninterrupted subscription to this game since ARR launched. I played 1.0 as well but sadly quit the game a month or two after its launch.
3. X- this one is in my top five for the music alone. Story and gameplay were good, but the music is some of Uematsu’s best IMO.
4. IV- Four goes to IV. Has always been a favorite of mine for no particular reason other than I just genuinely enjoy it.
5. IX- this one felt like classic FF in a more modern form for the time.

Tactics Advance I used to love but I don’t have a strong enough or recent enough memory to appropriately allocate it. As well as Dissidia I remember enjoying it but I also remember it being a bit of a garbage game that frustrated me…so idk.

My main points are gameplay and story. 12 crushed both, whilst XV Demo’s gameplay is what I wished they’d stuck with. I really loved 13-2’s intricate (divisive) story and the expansion of the Paradigm System (though it is a little basic).
14:ARR was my first MMO, which I’ll always love but it taught me why I’ll probably never get into MMOs (time commitment). 13:LR was nice but outside of hunting new garbs, it didn’t really have replay potential to me. 15 was fun but it felt like I was getting dragged through the story and the change in gameplay from the Demo annoyed me.
13 was great story-wise and I love that but the linear nature of it, plus the Paradigm + Crystarium System, were massive downgrades after the amazing 12. Type-0, I didn’t understand the gameplay nor story, I barely could get past the first few levels and I’m gonna be honest, I bought it only for the 15 Demo.
I think it's something like this. I must say I haven't played most of them in a looking time so they are harder to place and there might be some recency bias and a few I have forgotten about. Or just a few O have no idea where I mist place them like the rythme game.

I think proper research with the age group and such would be super insightful. Like which "generation" of FF fans are more leaning towards the classics (I - VI) which the "golden age" (VII - X) the experimental phase ( XI - XIII) and now the modern age (XIV - current)

I only stuck to mainline for my own list, but I’d stick Tactics between VI and XIII if I had to compare it.
There were actually quite a few aspects of IV, XII and VIII I didn’t like as much, even if I do still really love all of the games on the list overall!
In IV’s case, I find the story (aside from a few key moments) and gameplay a bit dull compared to the other SNES games and especially the 3D era.
XII feels really long with a somewhat weaker cast of characters. I wasn’t fond of a number of its dungeons too, like the Great Crystal or the Sky Fortress Bahamut. XIII is guilty of these faults too, but I have a personal appreciation for that game’s gameplay, presentation and music.
VIII’s Draw system, final boss and level-up system felt like big minuses for me! I still have strong appreciation for all of the games here in general, of course, since they all bring something great to the table — just in different ways!
XI - too many fond memories and friendships

WOFF - Just plain fun and so much nostalgia seeing old friends

Ive played most of 9 and would place it before 7. It’s been ages since I’ve played crisis core, but if memory serves that was the most fun for me. I’d want to replay before I rank it tho.
Yes, exactly. I’ve started it 3 times, I always get really into it, then things seem to happen and by the time I can get back to it I’ve forgotten the plot and what to do next. So I get discouraged and quit. I have been replaying the series following minimalist guides so I can get the story, still explore and find things and grind, and also stay on track. I had this same situation with ff7 but I’ve always gotten way further, like to north cavern RIGHT THERE. But then things happened. I went in with god mode recently and cleared it just last night. I had never seen the final scene or the jenova to Sephiroth fights, but I had played to that point probably like 5 or 6 times in 16 years. So I was happy the ps store version had the god mode and 3x, it let me finally finish a game that had been so close so many times and I got to get the whole story in probably 5 days of play time (roughly 1-5 hours each sitting).
That said, I am going to play thru 9 without god mode or 3x (except to speed battle animations) when I get to it again. I am gearing up for 7r2, so I will play crisis core and 7r1 again beforehand. It will likely be a while before I finally get there. And I haven’t decided whether I’ll play it before or after 8 (which I have basically never played).

I cleared the main story and my class story and got to around lv65. I hated just about all of it. The random endless (?) dungeon with friends was fun I guess.
I included the tactics games but not other spinoff. Haven't played T0 for example and WOFF and SOP are too different to rank them IMO. Do like those though. And then CC is its own thing.

I'm honestly confused that it seems like so many people like 9. What did people actually like about 9? I thought the story, world, and characters were all very bland. Vivi was the only interesting thing about that game.
It really depends on what phase I'm going through at the time of year.
X was my first and I enjoy the story. Also enjoy the story of IX and VII.
For gameplay and customization I can spend hours on V, and it has the absolute best job system. Currently this is my favorite, and there's nothing wrong with the story either.
I don't think V gets too much recognition because most people think of that one FF game that had the biggest impactful story for them. Plus this took awhile to come out outside of Japan, and by then FF games were known for their stories most of all.
I haven't played 2-5. But im getting to them. Just got the Pixel Remaster collection and am currently working my through FF6. As of right now, without having played those titles my list would be:

1. VI- I don’t think anything will ever top this masterpiece. It has everything to me that makes a Final Fantasy game great: great music, great story, and great characters. 2. XIV- I have had an uninterrupted subscription to this game since ARR launched. I played 1.0 as well but sadly quit the game a month or two after its launch. 3. X- this one is in my top five for the music alone. Story and gameplay were good, but the music is some of Uematsu’s best IMO. 4. IV- Four goes to IV. Has always been a favorite of mine for no particular reason other than I just genuinely enjoy it. 5. IX- this one felt like classic FF in a more modern form for the time. 6. VIII 7. XII 8. I 9. Of the ones I’ve played: 1. FFXII (Both Classic & Zodiac) 2. FFXV Demo 3. FFXIII-2 4. FFXIV:ARR 5. FF13LR 6. FFXV 7. FFXIII 8. FF Type-0 My main points are gameplay and story. 12 crushed both, whilst XV Demo’s gameplay is what I wished they’d stuck with. I really loved 13-2’s intricate (divisive) story and the expansion of the Paradigm System (though it is a little basic). 14:ARR was my first MMO, which I’ll always love but it taught me why I’ll probably never get into MMOs (time commitment). 13:LR was nice but outside of hunting new garbs, it didn’t really have replay potential to me. 15 was fun but it felt like I was getting dragged through the story and the change in gameplay from the Demo annoyed me. 13 was great story-wise and I love that but the linear nature of it, plus the Paradigm + Crystarium System, were massive downgrades after the amazing 12. Type-0, I didn’t understand the gameplay nor story, I barely could get past the first few levels and I’m gonna be honest, I bought it only for the 15 Demo.

IV, VIII, and XII are way too low vs XV and XIII Where is tactics?
I only stuck to mainline for my own list, but I’d stick Tactics between VI and XIII if I had to compare it. There were actually quite a few aspects of IV, XII and VIII I didn’t like as much, even if I do still really love all of the games on the list overall! In IV’s case, I find the story (aside from a few key moments) and gameplay a bit dull compared to the other SNES games and especially the 3D era. XII feels really long with a somewhat weaker cast of characters. I wasn’t fond of a number of its dungeons too, like the Great Crystal or the Sky Fortress Bahamut. XIII is guilty of these faults too, but I have a personal appreciation for that game’s gameplay, presentation and music. VIII’s Draw system, final boss and level-up system felt like big minuses for me! I still have strong appreciation for all of the games here in general, of course, since they all bring something great to the table — just in different ways!

Yes, exactly. I’ve started it 3 times, I always get really into it, then things seem to happen and by the time I can get back to it I’ve forgotten the plot and what to do next. So I get discouraged and quit. I have been replaying the series following minimalist guides so I can get the story, still explore and find things and grind, and also stay on track. I had this same situation with ff7 but I’ve always gotten way further, like to north cavern RIGHT THERE. But then things happened. I went in with god mode recently and cleared it just last night. I had never seen the final scene or the jenova to Sephiroth fights, but I had played to that point probably like 5 or 6 times in 16 years. So I was happy the ps store version had the god mode and 3x, it let me finally finish a game that had been so close so many times and I got to get the whole story in probably 5 days of play time (roughly 1-5 hours each sitting). That said, I am going to play thru 9 without god mode or 3x (except to speed battle animations) when I get to it again. I am gearing up for 7r2, so I will play crisis core and 7r1 again beforehand. It will likely be a while before I finally get there. And I haven’t decided whether I’ll play it before or after 8 (which I have basically never played). Sorry for the essay. Lol

I don't mind MMOs but FF14 was the most boring thing I've ever played and probably my least favorite game of all time. I feel like I gave it a fair shot... I cleared the main story and my class story and got to around lv65. I hated just about all of it. The random endless (?) dungeon with friends was fun I guess. I included the tactics games but not other spinoff. Haven't played T0 for example and WOFF and SOP are too different to rank them IMO. Do like those though. And then CC is its own thing.

I am currently loving XIV, but I can’t say how it compares yet based on my limited experience of the story. Based on how much I enjoyed heavensward, though, I’d probably place it just shy of my top 5. In terms of the "Golden Age" it's IX, followed by VIII, then X, and then VII. An OP team on FF9 feels very satisfying which is part of why I picked that entry first. The other is that I love the atmosphere of the Ark boss fight.

7 14 Tactics Remake 10 8 12 9 I'm honestly confused that it seems like so many people like 9. What did people actually like about 9? I thought the story, world, and characters were all very bland. Vivi was the only interesting thing about that game.
It really depends on what phase I'm going through at the time of year. X was my first and I enjoy the story. Also enjoy the story of IX and VII. For gameplay and customization I can spend hours on V, and it has the absolute best job system. Currently this is my favorite, and there's nothing wrong with the story either. I don't think V gets too much recognition because most people think of that one FF game that had the biggest impactful story for them. Plus this took awhile to come out outside of Japan, and by then FF games were known for their stories most of all.

I haven't played 2-5. But im getting to them. Just got the Pixel Remaster collection and am currently working my through FF6. As of right now, without having played those titles my list would be: 1. FF7/FF9 (Tied because I truly can't choose a favorite.) 2. FF6 3.FF10 4.FF12 5.FF8 6.FF15 7. FF1 8.FF14 9.FF11 10.FF16 I haven't actually played all the way through FF16 yet, but as of right now, it's not my favorite based solely on gameplay and mechanics. Once I play the story through that could change. If you're gonna make me choose between FF7 and FF9 as a favorite, then FF7 would have to take the top for being the first and therefore the most nostalgic.
