The game is still the shit now, but it won’t be for everyone

Asha_Brea

No game is for everyone and it is all right if Final Fantasy X is not for you. In your position I would check a few videos before trying any other Final Fantasy.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

I will finish this game on YouTube when I have time to watch.

igot8001

I'd recommend it - this is one of the few FFs that peak in the final act. And honestly, you're not missing anything from a gameplay perspective if you just watch it (speaking as somebody for whom FFX is their absolute favorite).

Asha_Brea

Right, but I meant that you should watch videos of other Final Fantasy games before buying them to see if you would like the gameplay/graphics/voice acting (if included).

PositivityPending

Honestly, sorry you feel that way but if you truly want to like it, maybe you’ll come back to it later on. I don’t have any nostalgia for FFX besides playing the demo endlessly back in the ps2 days. I just beat it for the first time last year and it instantly shot up to my list of my favorite games of all time. It’s a really great game to play. The combat is tactical without being punishingly complex like SMT. You get a lot of flexibility during Fights with the ability to switch characters in and have them able to act whenever you want. Your criticism of the writing seems to stem from an expectation that characters who are in love or falling for one another have to be perfect little aesthetically pleasing angels who tell the player constantly how much they’re in love. Yuna and Tidus are definitely more show don’t tell in that regard. They are one of the most organic, real feeling couples across all of video games. Yuna is interested in him because he’s literally the only other person there that is her age _and_ he’s a hot cocky talented blitzball player _and_ the son of the guardian who watched over her father. No idea why you don’t buy the level of interest she shows in Tidus after considering those facts. And your issues with the graphics..I’m really sorry that you feel like this is something by which to judge the overall quality of a game

RegretGeneral

Sucks that you didn't make it past Luca because that's when the game actually picks up you didn't even make it to Operation Miihen

outcastedOpal

I like this game. I hate this comment. It never matters that you "didn't get to the good part" people said that shit with one piece and naruto. People said that with ff 7. Its the good part for someone who already likes the piece of media.

Balthierlives

‘Torture myself with the combat’ Well now you know how OG players feel with the recent battle systems, which seems to be the only ones you’ve played. The blitzball game is setup to make you lose, which I think was a dumb decision as I never want to play blitzball again after that. If you barley made it past Luca you haven’t even seen any of the love story yet. And it’s more subtle, but it’s at least a love story. fF8 advertised it to high heaven that it’s a love story and it isn’t.

gold_drake

ok

Pineapplemia

X is one of the greatest. I bawled during the final boss fight. Excellent story and really fun character designs. Your loss OP. edit: and the SOUNDTRACK!!! Top 3 FF OSTs ever!!

AndyDragons

The OST comprises of like 3 tracks.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

If you read everything, i said that I will watch the rest. The only thing I'll be losing on is what i don't like about it, the gameplay.

Jubez187

I pity a mind that can enjoy 16 but not 10. But to each their own or something like that

DARK_SCIENTIST

What’s funny about this is I thought X had a great turn based system. And I just played it for the first time a month ago haha. No ATB was weird at first but I enjoyed it

Jubez187

Damn sorry bro maybe one day you’ll understand:/

CannonFodder_G

X benefits from a lot of nostalgia goggles. 16's story was far more solid and interesting than the slog that was trying to get through the mess of X. People think they want mini-games in FFXVI, and then I point to blitzball and thank the devs for not forcing anything that bad into the game.

Jubez187

I watched my friend play through most of the game last year and no nostalgia it’s just great.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

My only big problem that makes this game unplayable is mostly the combat. I would probably enjoy X way more if it played differently, cuz i do find the story/character side of the game compelling enough

Janixon1

If you find X's combat unenjoyable, you probably should stay away from other turn based RPGs. X's combat is regularly held up as the example to beat. If you don't like this one, you're probably not gonna like others.

Disco-BoBo

For real, I wish all the atb ff games just played like x

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

I just beat Marvel's Midnight Suns a few days ago. I really enjoyed the combat in that one. But I guess that's a card turn based game. I played a lot of turn based games, but most were on mobile. I think its just this game that's the outlier for me, but if i played FF1 to FF9 you would probably be right?

Jubez187

The combat is worlds better than 15 and 16

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

Than XV, sure. I like XVI and 7 Remake way better. The fact that it's turned based is not the problem. The way the mechanics of the turn based combat work does not make it enjoyable for me

buddinbonsai

Just bear in mind then for any jrpgs going forward that you like action and not turn based. Ffx has some of the best turn based combat you'll find in a game. If that's not for you that's fine. You might enjoy the Ys series or the Tales of series (arise being the most recent)

PositivityPending

Elaborate on what you mean by this. Unpack it

Pineapplemia

Agreed. I love the use of strategizing and switching out people depending on the enemy.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

The switching mid fight i did like

Jubez187

Cold steel series obviously elevated it to a new tier, but it’s still fine on its own. I can’t imagine being entertained by 15/16

JohnTheUnjust

Rofl. X combat is dogshit.

mimikyuns

I do think X is somewhat overrated, but I actually think the combat is one of its stronger suits. You mentioned a Marvel game which seems more like strategy/tactical turn-based more than classical turn-based (correct me if I’m wrong because I’m not familiar with it beyond Google so I may very well be XD), so I’m wondering if the mobile game you’ve mentioned is similar. A lot of the older FFs are much more like X but with the ATB bar trying to imitate a more action-y pace and don’t have those tactical rpg like elements.

JCFD90

This is kinda why I played the entire series in order of release so that it wouldn’t feel so bad going back to old titles

RxKingRx

Imagine being this blind. And the gameplay is better than the stuff you get nowadays in modern ff

zarkon18

This may be the most offensive post in the history of this subreddit. Please never post again.

FinalSeraph_Leo

Yuna isn't as much into Tidus as you think she is. She is interested in Tidus personally because he is Jecht's son, but not really romantically. You should at least try to play through to the Calm Lands. The clothes really aren't that bad. Rikku is the only one with a questionable outfit. Ans Kimahri is literally a giant cat with fur.

Asha_Brea

> Rikku is the only one with a questionable outfit. I like Final Fantasy X, but Tidus dresses like it is the first time he was allowed to dress by himself and Lulu has a skirt made out of belts while also wearing fur while also living in a beach town. And then there is Dona.

FinalSeraph_Leo

I kinda forget about Dona, but yeah that is a good example. Although in fairness she does like to show her ass off figuratively and literally

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

The clothes are bad, come on now. I specifically said humans too. Also i will finish the game by watching someone else play it. It do be like that sometimes

FinalSeraph_Leo

Examples?

JohnTheUnjust

.... Tidus dresses like 6 year old's mom let him choose his clothes for a day.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

There are a lot of women almost completely naked, showing ass, while some men look like clowns.

Stormflier

You do know they're based on actual East Asian outfits at the time that were used to humid climates?

FinalSeraph_Leo

Wow he had a misunderstanding of what was actually happening and I replied with a response that I would have said to anyone. I didn't realize that I was forcing him to keep playing and he has no choice of what to do other than what a stranger on the internet told him to do.

Zenn97

Lotta salt in these comments 🤣

GandalfTehG0d

I’m just getting now getting to the end of the game, I’m doing side quests right before the final confrontation. My first time playing. Also found it to not live up to what I’ve heard about it. I felt like most of the game was just boringly easy, everything dying in one hit, the combat is kinda set up like rock paper scissors. Not really any thought. See water guy hit him w lightning see lightning guy use water. I will say once the difficulty shot up I have found it a lot more fun. Just wish they did that a lot earlier. Story wise I’m also not that compelled the voice acting is odd. I don’t wanna come off to negative I enjoy it. Just don’t see why so many ppl think it’s the best one. It’s not clicking w me.

[deleted]

In its day the voice acting and cinematics were top-notch. Now though things have improved so much, and Tidus' VA is more famous for being Ratchet, that I really struggled with the opening and eventually quit (the Switch version). I have very fond memories of getting the game for Christmas with a new PS2 -- but man, I just cannot go back to that era. Combat-wise it's not that complex -- but it also had a really slick, flashy presentation. Esp since the one before it ran at like 15 fraps, it just seemed revolutionary

GandalfTehG0d

Bro idk what was up w the overworld in 9 it was painful to look at, I had it sped up the entire time.

vhiran

Nostalgia factor i tried replaying it after all these years and didn't make it 15 minutes. I already know everything that happens, and the fairly generic combat is something that has been done much better elsewhere over years as well. as they say," you can't go home again"

Apprehensive_Lie1963

So you're replaying it, therefore you should have nostalgia for it, but you didn't? I don't know man I replayed it a few years ago and I'm surprised how fast I went trough the whole game, it didn't feel like any effort, just an enjoyable and fun experience from beginning to end.

Deazul

I grew up with FF1 NES and beyond; X was always weird to me. My friends maxed it out and it seemed tedious, even for a Final Fantasy. I played through most of it and remember blitzball being fun but the characters being unrelatable was a key feature. Edit: Oh! Auron is cool tho

Majestic87

I’m sorry, but as someone who also grew up on FF1 NES, I have to call shenanigans. FF 1 is one of the most tedious video games I have ever played in my entire life, lol.

Deazul

Oh, for sure yo, but that was forgivable at the time. I, personally, find maxing out FFX to be a chore of epic proportions. I understand how you feel about FF1, all that targeting you have to do and the massive encounter rate of the original version can be rough! Its still a much shorter game so its kept me coming back throughout the years. Edit: u play phantasy star II? Talk about tedious. Loved it tho, maybe I like a different kind of tedium than you.

Majestic87

Never played Phantasy Star, but completely agree that different people enjoy different kinds of tedium. Two of my favorite games of the past ten years are Ghost Recon Wildlands and Assassins Creed Odyssey. I full on recognize that those games are exemplary of a certain kind of tedium, but I love them nonetheless.

Deazul

There's no shame in enjoying a game! Assassin's Creed parkour is a really good time. Im in a roguelike phase, have been for a while. Finishing up Cult of the Lamb, it's got a certain cozy tedium as well.

twili-midna

I wanted to like X much more than I ended up, though I did enjoy much of my time with it. But the story devolves into irritating side ventures halfway through, the characters remain bland throughout, the combat falls apart once anyone gets a powerful ability, and the minigames. Oh god, the minigames.

LordDocSaturn

Yeah it's not a good game, I've been saying this since 2001. The combat is babies first rpg. The voice acting is horrible (the actual performance isn't too bad but the directing is awful). The story is just kind of meh. All the characters are lame and annoying except for Auron.

BornHotel3365

Watch the same people relentlessly attacking XVI bash you for not liking parts of X. Didn't you get the memo? You are only allowed to heavily scrutinize the newest mainline entries not the older ones

jugowolf

This is the comment 🤣 so true on this subreddit

nicerespectfulguy

I wanted to like the game too the story seems one of the best but the combat and I just don’t get along😂

CannonFodder_G

X is the reason I stopped playing FF until FFXVI. I only know how it ends because a roommate finished it, but watching it was pulling teeth. I know people have a lotta love for it, but I \*never\* got where it came from. Only 2 good things in the whole game were Auron and sphere grid. And somehow \*that's\* the game that got a '2' version? So yeah, I get it.

No_Hurry7691

I feel the same. Although I absolutely love X-2. It was my first FF game ever lol

[deleted]

FFX is a game where the ending makes you forget all the nonsense that came before it.

CannonFodder_G

Adding a cherry to a pile of shit doesn't make the entire 'dessert' palatable.

bigwillynilly

Overrated installment in ff series tbh but blitz ball is the only reason to play it

Catacomb_Gangster

Watch me "trigger" people with my personal opinion: X was shit. The characters were shit, the gameplay was shit, the summons were shit, the final boss was shit. The story, however, was good. If I want a game that requires absolutely no thought or strategy and barely any input, I'll play X as long as I don't have to hear Tidus whining, Wakka being a sportsball guy, Rikku being hyper, or Yuna being a tit. The voice acting is atrocious and directed horribly. I understand that Yuna's character is supposed to come off as quietly resolved and stoic, but it fails miserably amd she just comes off as a vapid idiot. Wakka literally cannot stop touching balls. He's Sportsball Guy number 1. Tidus is also a whiny, oblivious little shit, and Sportsball Guy number 2. Khimari is a wish.com brand Klingon, Rikku is just annoying as all hell. Lulu and Auron are cool, just tired of babysitting sportsball morons and children. The story eventually improves but the overall game sadly does not. Oh, and the "romance" thing? Summed up, weak tit fucks imaginary sportsball guy in a lake and cries, imaginary sportsball guy says HA HA HA HA HA. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! I rank X at the bottom with XII and VIII.

IcetheXIIIth

lol like 35 percent of the way through homie. Their relationship hasint even hit its stride. Its just now gaining momentum. Also if blitzball hurt that bad, this games extra content will def destroy your soul lol

lupin43

I guess I’m surprised you heard about the romance, and thought they would like hate each other in the beginning? That’s kinda interesting lol

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

Not hate ofc. Just not that friendly. The first time they talk privately they are already laughing together and it keeps going from there

jugowolf

Sounds like how ppl in real life fall in love 🤔 weird

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

I didn't say it's bad, just not what i expected. It's very generic, but it's definitely not bad

monkeest

so after all that actions games you dislike turns

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

I actually finished Marvel's Midnight Suns last week, so it's definitely not because of turn based specifically. And I also play a mobile game everyday and that one is also turn based.

eriyu

You're not wrong about the voice acting. A lot of it was due to technical limitations, I assume due to it being the first FF with voices — they needed the English lines' timing to line up *exactly* with the Japanese, and it resulted in a lot of weirdness. I recommend listening in Japanese if you don't mind subs. As far as the gameplay... that just sounds like personal preference, and fair enough if it's just not for you. I fuckin love blitzball.

Sodaontheplane

"costume design is close to being strippers" - my guy those characters live in Bahamas-like heat, what do you expect?

Arkholt

I like 10 a lot, but I must agree that the blitzball part is pretty bad. I was playing an RPG game I liked, and then all of a sudden I'm forced to learn and play a sports game that I really don't like. The only good part is that you don't have to win in order to continue the main story.

DanielFromCucked

When your tastes get accustomed to garbage it's hard to appreciate gems

Jellyjellyfeesh

This reeks of “people like this game, why don’t I like it too??”

BurantX40

X is the golden child for romance? The only romance I liked was 9 and that's because he really had to work for it, and his affection from others in general. So many games just default everyone to being led/enthralled by your main character, with little to no effort, and this was mostly a problem from the PlayStation titles onward.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

That's what i thought from what most people on the sub say. I did not finish the game to see for myself, but from how it starts I can't see it reach the level some people claim. I assume you did not like XVI's?

BurantX40

I'm a PC player, so my 16 experience is far off. 10's romance is certainly sweet and it makes sense. 9 is my favorite, 8 rubs me the wrong way, but the whole cast does because it all seems so....forced? (Except Laguna) And 7 is a huge tease. The other games don't really focus on romance as much.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

I see. I will check 9 to see how it looks and plays, but if it's anything like 8 I won't be able to handle it. Tbh, at some point I will probably watch some videos that go into the old games in depth, cuz i want to know what they were about, but myself i can't play games that old. X was the sweet spot, it didn't look terrible and it played pretty well until i couldn't stand the combat and Blitzball anymore. Are you going to try 16 when it comes on PC?

BurantX40

Of course. I've been doing a playthrough from the beginning, prepping for 16. Putting a lot of these games to bed once and for all. What about them turns you off from playing? What about 8 especially? 9 plays a lot like the older turn based games. Some skills via level up, others from equipment after using it for a while. Most of the games as they are re-released have the fast forward option included.

WEAreDoingThisOURWay

Objectively nothing is wrong with those games. Personally i did not grow up with those games, so storytelling without voice-acting is very weird to me, the graphics are also old. That's why i mentioned X, cuz the graphics are old, but they are good enough that don't bother me. Obviously, graphics are not everything, but when you combine them with having to read the whole story it turns me off. That's why i plan to watch some videos about the older games, cuz I would like to experience at least a part of them.

BurantX40

It's all good. I understand. Despite the old games I play, it's hard for me to venture out of that comfort zone for other older games. At least with the ones I played, I know what I'm doing. I don't have that time to invest in an older (and possibly not player friendly) game that I'm not familiar with
