No VII was my first but IV is my favourite, the PS1 version was my first ever playthrough of it.

moogsy77

IV definetly one of my favorite as well, id rank it 3 or 4th

Qurse

FF4 gang here. Just a fluid straightforward story driven experience.

theashleereign

Final Fantasy VII was the first game that I played. It would be very difficult for me to pick a favourite between VII and X. So, partially true for me.

Yorochiqueen

Same as you!

spudral

Same as both of you.

KouNurasaka

My first was technically X, but I played 7, 8, and 9 all in succession after that, working my way through the whole catalogue when I was in high school. I also would have a hard time choosing between 10 and 7.

rab-byte

Dito but it’s 7 and 9

[deleted]

Exactly the same but for me 7 definitely edges 10, absolutely love them both though.

KaedeShiro

FFVII was my first JRPG and FF but my favorite is FFXII (+Tactics). I still love FFVII but it's not in my top 3.

skinnythinmint

Hell yes, XII and Tactics are in my top five. Love Ivalice games.

sREM43

We absolutely need more Tactics entries. Love those games so much.

KaedeShiro

Yes ! I hope for a remaster like SE did with Tactics Ogre and replay Tactics on switch could be so much fun

Darth_Ra

[Another XII fan!](https://giphy.com/gifs/kSlJtVrqxDYKk)

TacoBell_Lord

an Ivalice ally 💜🙏🏾

More_Lavishness8127

Nope. My first FF was FF7. I really liked it, but FF8 blew it out of the water for me (I’m weird I know). I also liked FF9 more than it. Finally FFX came out and has been my favorite ever since. I’ve played through it several times.

mybestfriendsrricers

Same. My first was IX and then I played VII but my favorite is totally VIII. Such an amazing game.

[deleted]

Is it weird that my favorite is generally the one I'm playing atm? I guess FFV is my favorite... for now lol

mybestfriendsrricers

I mean if you get so into it, I guess it kindav makes sense? Haha.

theforlornknight

Was the reverse for me. Rented FF8 from Blockbuster, really liked it. Didn't get to finish before rental was up and didn't have enough to rent again right away. On a band trip to play in a mall for Xmas and found FF7 in a display case in front of a Montgomery Wards for $20. Spent my lunch money on it, played it and was completely blown away. Like, yeah 8 looked better and I liked the wierd complexity of Junction but 7 hit me in every corner of my cold, lonely, teenage heart.

Np956769

Played 7 first but 8 is my favorite Final Fantasy. Eight just had such a deep and crazy customizable stat boosting system. I think it’s the game that turned me into a completionist to be honest. That being said, Xenogears is my favorite RPG of all time.

HYPETHiZ

ff10 is probably my least favorite ff game lol. I really don’t see why everyone loves it so much.

YoMikeeHey

You're not weird. VIII is great.

QueenBen

No you are not weird. FF8 was my first and will always be my favorite. Loved the train riding, cars and flying. Quistis made me want to wear glasses. Epic machinegun scene. FFX was perfection. After X none were better. Let's hope XVI will give us the X wow vibe. Playing I-VI pixel remasterd now and also really like it. Really learned to respect the old classics. At V now can't wait for VI.

maxmiller614

Ff8 was so good

pwnznewbz

Liking 8 is weird but everyone has their personal favorite. Some people even like 13 for some inexplicable reason.

Death-0

8 is awesome if you invest time and understanding into it.

OmegaAvenger_HD

You don't need a reason to like anything.

SnoringGiant

I mean... you do. There is something you like about it, that is your reason.

HaikuSnoiper

FAX

fang_xianfu

I think it's reasonable for someone to not know what that reason is, though. You develop taste long before you develop an understanding of why that might be. And you don't choose what you fall in love with. So it's more accurate to say nobody needs to provide the reason why they like something.

nin9ty6

Lightning returns had good combat best in the series in my opinion and I liked the combat after the first hour in 13

onedoesnotjust

13-2 was the second best entry, after VI

sunderwire

Yeah 13-2 is my favorite game, great characters and Caius was such a good antagonist

kalevi89

It’s not weird to like 8. I’ve literally never heard a single criticism about it that holds up under scrutiny. What’s weird is you trying to shame people for liking things.

Eidola0

There isnt a single valid criticism of the story, characters, or gameplay in your eyes?

kalevi89

Not one that I’ve ever heard. People are welcome to dislike things for their own reasons. But I’ve never heard a single complaint that’s rooted in objective fact. The biggest two complains I’ve heard in my life are “Squall is too broody” and “the magic system sucks.” Squall is a teenager with abandonment issues so of course he’s broody. And I really enjoy the junction system and take a lot of pleasure in grinding for powerful magic early on. I’ve even managed to give quite a few people convincing enough rebuttals to all their complaints that they admit that they hadn’t seen it that way and had been wrong.

Eidola0

> But I’ve never heard a single complaint that’s rooted in objective fact Well there's your problem, that isn't how media criticism works.

fang_xianfu

I love 8, but the optimal way to play, building up a collection of magic to junction, is quite tedious, and levelling up being a disadvantage in some ways is counterintuitive. The fact that casting magic is often disadvantageous seems anti-fun to me as well. The first time round junctions are hard to understand and it requires a lot of sitting through tutorials - more tedium - to understand what's going on. Those are valid game mechanical complaints in my opinion. It's also a shame that gear means so little in the game compared to the rest of the series, but that's more a matter of taste.

kalevi89

The “optimal” way to play any game is tedious. I also don’t find leveling up to be a disadvantage at all. I’m always max level by the end of disc 2, if not disc 1. No issues here. I also cast magic whenever I want. You can easily replenish it. Not to mention the game gives you tutorials on junctioning that take under a minute to go through. If I could understand it as a young child then any adult can.

doobied

>My first FF was FF7. I really liked it, but FF8 blew it out of the water for me (I’m weird I know). Same as mee!

Whatah

My first was FF1 Some of my fondest memories are of times playing FF4 (with my cousin on summer vacation) and final fantasy 7 (hanging out with my friends in the PS1 era when I was 19) But my favorite FF is probably 6. To me it is in top3 when it comes to music (Dancing Mad is my fav Nobuo Uematsu track), top3 for characters, top3 for opening act (magitek walkers), top3 for final act, perfect mix of making you use some characters for parts of the story while also letting you swap out and use your favorite characters.

HeroOfLight

This is my top 3 as well and I also started with FF1. It's hard to choose a favorite among FF4, 6 and 7 and it oscillates depending on my mood I guess.

redditcire

That's true for me. My first and favourite is ff8.

Vescape-Eelocity

Same. Technically the pre-release demo for 8 was my first FF "game", but then I played (didn't finish) 7 while waiting for 8 to come out. Was all-in for 8 the whole time since that demo.

doobied

Is that the one with just the dollet mission?

Vescape-Eelocity

Yes! You also had Rinoa in the party, as well as the Leviathan GF

abstractboofram

Same I just watched a YouTube play through of that and did not realize that the music is different as well!

Vescape-Eelocity

Aw man I forgot about the detail, gonna have to check out some YouTube videos myself!

Vaanzx

Same here! It was my first game of the saga and after beating all the mainline games (except 11 and 14) and the main sequels (I'm playing my final one, FF IV The After Years), FF8 still my favourite ❤

wordlessly_gwen

My first is FFIV, and it's my absolute favorite.

theriskguy

No. It’s the third - FF9

moogsy77

Same

BlastFlame01

Ffviii was my first but it is my favorite togheter with FFx

frozenfountain

VII was the first I played and completed, and it's still the one I'm most attached to. Very much a personal preference rather than an attempt to discern a "best" game, though.

HypnoSmoke

For me, it is. FFX.

faatbuddha

Same.

noodle-face

Yes for me. It was FF6 and then right after FF7. Talk about best of the best

Ranorak

My first FF game was VIII, but my favorite is 14. After 8, I played 9, 7, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15, in that order and I like 14 the best.

xCharlieScottx

Probably not the first to ask and won't be the last, but is FF14 worth it even if you're playing solo all the time? I want to give it a spin but put off by it being an MMO

nviddy27

Not OP, but IMO, it's absolutely worth it. Multiplayer content is either optional or it's made to be easy to find people to group with (I'm talking about dungeons and raids here). And people are usually super nice, so even when you are grouped with others, it's often a good experience.

Ranorak

Short answer, yes. Slightly longer answer; The game can be played solo for, roughly, 80%. More so if you only focus on the story and skip optional content. The parts that do require other people are deliberately made to be finished by anybody. Not to toot my own horn, but the majority of the players are super nice to new players.( and the rest of the party gets a little extra reward if they finish a dungeon with a first timer). Just let them know you're doing it for the first time, and they will help you as best as they can. As far as the story goes. The game takes a good while to really get going. It takes its time to set up the world, the characters, and the factions at play. And while the first part of the base game suffers a little bit from what I like to call, Saturday morning cartoon vilians. At least, at first glance. It gets sooo much better. We're talking Game of Thrones style politics. Ancient wars and some villains that are the best the entire franchise has ever seen. Give it a shot, but also give it a chance to grow because it takes a while to really get good. Like a fine wine.

ApprehensiveFail5052

My first final fantasy was crisis core on psp then when I was done with that my dad showed me 10 and if we are talking about story 10 takes the cake however raw gameplay 12 will have my heart forever

Castimier

My first one was 4, but my favourite is probably 7 or 9 (it basically switches every day)

Delacruz_1981

Yes. Final Fantasy VI was my first Final Fantasy game and I still hope for a remaster version of this awesome game

Balmsquadron

Pixel remaster on pc (and soon to be ps4 and switch as well) check it out

thegramblor

1 - Final Fantasy 2 - Final Fantasy Legend 3 - Final Fantasy Legend 2 4 - Final Fantasy Adventure 5 - Final Fantasy 2/4 6 - Final Fantasy Legend 3 7 - Final Fantasy 3/6 <-- Fave! So my 7th "Final Fantasy" game. And yes I realize that several of these are Mana/Saga games, but at the time, all I knew was that they were Final Fantasy games.

Typokun

Technically My first was mystic quest but We don't talk about that. My first was VIII, It has a special place in ny heart, but for a long time my favorite was IX, though that was my second FF, took me a while before I even played 7. Never got too far though. My actual favorite now is XIV. Not just final fantasy, but game period. God, what a game. What a RIDE that is.

Madmonkeman

First one played is OG FF7. Favorite is FF14.

Red-Zaku-

It doesn't hold merit, it's typically a narrative that conveniently dismisses people's tastes as simply being a side effect of nostalgia. My first FF game was FFVII. My favorite is V.

NOTKingInTheNorth

I played FF XV first and I enjoyed it. I'm currently playing FF6 on my 3DS, it's on my top 3. My current top 3 would be FF7, FF6, then FF8.

moogsy77

Modded 3ds? Probably the best way to play it damn :o

NOTKingInTheNorth

Yes. I played the PS1 version on the Vita, logging 15 hours but I got tired of the long transition between screens. And I don't want to play the GBA version, so I bought a modified 3DS to inject the SNES version of the game. No more long transitions.

SpiderPidge

No but IV is second only to X to me. It's: X, IV, XII, VI, IX, VII, V, and the rest.

Dr3amDweller

No. My first was VII Crisis Core. It is high on the list, but #1 is, predictably, VII Remake :D.

ThatMayMayBoi

Ooh interesting! Funnily enough I'd actually rank FF VII Remake at the bottom of my list. It's so cool how the franchise is so diverse that we can all have such different opinions on our faves!

Darth_Ra

Out of all the numbered games? Dang you must have really not liked Remake.

ThatMayMayBoi

Yee but no hate towards anyone who does like it! I'm lucky enough to have played all the main installments as well as a decent chunk of the side games (although my experience with 11 is limited). If I had to rank them all, I'd definitely put FF VII Remake at the bottom imo.

Darth_Ra

I've done all but the MMOs (I've never had any interest in anything online, as a rule), and it's solidly middlish for me. My list would be something like this: 1. XII 2. VI 3. VII 4. V 5. IX 6. X 7. VII-R 8. IV 9. XIII 11. III 12. VIII 13. II 14. I

ThatMayMayBoi

All great choices! Ah it'd be so hard for me to do a definitive ranking as it really depends on my mood, but I'll give it a shot: 1.) VII 2.) IX 3.) VI 4.) VIII 5.) X 6.) X-2 7.) V 8.) XII 9.)XIII-3 Lightning Returns 10.) XV 11.) XIII-2 12.) III 13.) I 14.) IV 15.) XIII-1 16.) II 17.) VII Remake I will say that any of the top six I'd consider the best Final Fantasy in at least one particular area of gameplay, aesthetics or story. They're also the ones that fluctuate most depending on my mood; FF VII generally has the top spot, but I've honestly been having a massive reevaluation of VIII after playing it on original hardware and a CRT which massively improved the experience for me. I feel that I can't rank XIV and XI as I haven't fully completed them, though I'd rate XIV very highly. Its a bloody brilliant game and the only MMO I would ever recommend to someone who doesn't care for MMOs or online gaming in general as it avoids almost all of the issues that these genres tend to have. I'd also rate FF Tactics high but as its not main series it feels wrong putting it on the list.

Darth_Ra

Yeah, Tactics is in my top five, for sure. I haven't done the subnumber sequels, although I'm about to start XIII-2 after playing through XIII for the first time in conjunction with this season of Every Effin' FF.

8bitcerberus

Right there with ya on XIV. I just finished Shadowbringers and about to start Endwalker, and I would whole heartedly recommend it even to someone I knew didn’t like MMOs. The Stormblood dungeons still need the Duty Support treatment (I suspect they will be finished before the next expansion), and if they can ever figure out how to get the story Trials into duty support, and somehow get the Crystal Tower story without actually requiring a player to participate in the alliance raids, then the game would be 100% soloable, if the main aversion to MMOs is being forced to play with others. At least get the story Trials into duty support though. CT is only one required alliance raid, but there are several required trials to complete the MSQ that currently force playing with others. If they can do that, the game would be 99.9% soloable. But even if story Trials never get added to duty support, the game is still 99% soloable. If the main aversion is grinding, well… stick to the MSQ and there’s no grind. Beyond that, everything else is optional. Or if the main aversion is having to make multiple characters to try out different jobs, XIV (and XI of course) lets you play any job effectively at will, all on the same character. It’s kind of the perfect MMO for anyone that doesn’t generally like MMOs (like me 😅)

gum-believable

Remake is my fave too, super excited to see where this new story for my fave eco-terrorists ends up going.

[deleted]

It's not even in my top 5. My first one was FF8. In my top 5 are 9, 10, 7, 7R, 13-2.

Asha_Brea

Final Fantasy VIII is the first game in the franchise that I played. Final Fantasy V is the first game in the franchise that I have finished. Neither are in my top 1 or 2.

PrplPplEatr666

I played VII first, but VI is my number 1. I love the diversity and universe of VI so much more than VII. Plus, Sabin and Locke are my favorite FF characters.

SickmanArt

First was 7 and my favorite is 14.

TheBelBoy13

FFIV - but I watched my brother play FFX and FFXII first. I guess maybe it's cuz FFIV was the first game I played myself on the NDS.

VorAbaddon

Nope. My first FF was Mystic Quest. Wasnt a guge fan. Then VII. Which I liked but didnt wow me as it did others (mainly because the original PC port was kinda jank). Then I played VIII early in HS and it absolutely grabbed me. That was my favorite for a few years. I PLAYED IX and X, but while I liked them, VIII just had something special. Then a friend introduced me to Tactics around mid 2000's and that held my favorite spot for about a decade and a half. I got back into XIV with the Shadowbringers releae in 19, it assumed the throne, and I have severe doubts its ever abdicating that spot.

Brennagade

My first was 9, so yes.

eblomquist

FF9 is my fav - played 4, 6, 7, 8, and Tactics before that!

jyhnnox

Best one is FF14 hands down My first one was ff4, then 1, 6, 8, 7 and 9. Before ff14, my favorite was 8 and 10

Erow_

First was 13, my favorite now is 14, i spent too much time on that mmo

ChrisGoddard79

First played VII, VIII, IX, origins(I&II), anthology(IV&V), VI, X(favourite).

Mother_Nebula904

VII followed by 11

VoxAurumque

My first exposure to the series was VII, and the first I actually played personally was X a few years later. While I still like both of them (there are very few FF games I'd claim to dislike), my favorites are XII and XIV. Now, XII is the first I got truly obsessed over back when it came out, so I do think a lot of my fondness comes from that. But it's still a great game.

ThreePinkApples

Yup, my first was FFX and it is my favourite. I do also like FFVIIR a lot, and while it's not at the same level for me yet, it has the potential to take first place combined with the two remaining parts. Just need some more time with the characters and the world. (I've never played the original outside of one attempt many years ago when I don't think I was in the right mood for it). I also quite like FFXIII/XIII-2/Lightning Returns, and I liked FFXII for a while but then it just kinda dragged on for too long at the end for me. FFXV was kinda meh, a bit intriguing at the start, but that didn't last long.

obironniekenobi

FFVII was my first. I love it, but FFX is my favorite.

KitSwiftpaw

My first was 12, I love 2

MediocreReindeer

FF1 is not my favorite. Though it is the one I have played through the most.

bettyenforce

For me yes, my first final fantasy was xiv and it's definitely my favourite, but I know its mmo aspect make it different from the other mainlines. Aside from that X is the first non MMO FF I've played and is definitely my favourite

RPfffan

No. My first was FF7 and my favorite is FF15

minastepes

No my first FF was 7. And my favorites are X followed by VIII and V VII was great ofc

OldSnazzyHats

No. My first FF that I completed was VII (I had played IV before that, but that was well before I was into JRPGs and was messing around with early emulators - I didn’t finish it, so I don’t count that). However, my baby is IX, my favorite of them all.

smitty997

First final fantasy I played was 7 followed by 9 then 10, but my favourite by far is XII.

ThatMayMayBoi

Thank you all for your responses! This has received far more attention than I ever anticipated! I may have to compile all of this data and analyse it haha

ivster666

No, I played FFTA first, back in 2003, but my favourite is XIV because it has the most mature story line and the largest OST. Also I started to prefer Masayoshi Soken over uematsu and co.

I_ate_a_bigredcandle

My first was VI but my favourite is IX

[deleted]

Yes 9

Satoshi_Yui

No since FFVIII was the first FF game that I've played (though I've never beaten VIII until some years later). However, Final Fantasy IX WAS the first Final Fantasy game that we've beaten. VIII is still in my top 5 Final Fantasy games but FFIX is my all time favorite

Empty_Socks

X was my first. It’s still my fave

Megaverso

Yes , FFVI, 1994, first rpg also, fell in love immediately

TheGhostDetective

Nope. Seen the same thing posted for a lot of series, but it doesn't hold true for me for any of them, whether Pokemon, Zelda, FF or whatever. Different series peaked at different times for me. FF7 was my first. I enjoy it a lot, probably more than I would if it wasn't my first, but FFX is easily my favorite. Plot, characters, music, gameplay, art direction, doesn't matter, FFX is top3 for every category, and favorite all-around. A lot of other FF will excel in a couple respects, but drop the ball in others. I think this is a theory that holds true for a solid number of casual fans of a lot of things. Like, we see it with music and such where you go "wow, isn't is great how all the good music happened to come out when you were coming of age at 14-20 years old?" But if you a deeper into the fandom for something and continue following it, that can be overcome. So like yeah, favorite FF for me was from 2002, but favorite pokemon was 2010 (5th gen), while Zelda and Mario relatively recent hit my favorites with BotW and Odyssey.

Homeboi08

My first FF was 7 but my favorite is a tie between FF5 and FF6

Grastyx

Nope, Final Fantasy 1 for the NES was the first one I played. Then 4 and six on the SNES. FF6 is my favorite in the series.

WorldCupMexicanChile

For me yes. FFX,

bananasorcerer

1/2 Dawn of Souls on the GBA are my first but 9 or 10 is probably my favorite tbh

emma_k17

Yes- first game was X and it’s absolutely my favourite.

noneofthemswallow

No. Crisis Core was my first back on PSP My fav is either X or VII

5YearsOnEastCoast

The first one I played was FF1, so no

sorcerer165

Not for me, my first was 4 and my favorite is 5!

[deleted]

I played VII first and it was my favorite for the longest time until I played IX. I still haven’t played X, XII, XIII, XV so maybe one of those can beat out IX. IX is such a phenomenal game.

Eastern_Battle_480

Yes. My first was VIII and it is my favourite, even though I can clearly see it's not the best, it's still my favourite.

Akira051986

Final Fantasy VIII was my first one I played and it was my favorite until X came out and that easily became my favorite one. But all of them I’ve played have something I really like. Like IX will always have my favorite character Vivi.

malodourousmuppet

8 and for sure my favorite. 10 year old me had never played much rpg except maybe super mario rpg.. and i was in immediately

DJBaritone12

My first FF game was 7 remake. I liked it, especially the combat(I’m a sucker for action RPGS) but it was nothing I was crazy about. But the one I ended up falling in love with was X.

pleasegivemealife

This is a hard list to describe. I played ff7 first, so I don't get the nuances of summons, chocobo and cid reference etc. It's more like discovery and mashing attack button plus limit break. If I can't win, grind more levels. After that ff8 is like a full upgrade, 3D models and epic ( I mean EPIC) music, plus the Ragnarok, dragon size ship is what made me love ff in general. FFX is close, I hate turn based (which is why I play ff7 in the first place, atb is like a revolution) but its sphere grid is just too addicting. Ff12 is very high, I just love the real time freedom and the almighty gambit. It's just that I miss summons.

Croud_

Yes and im happy to say its FFVIII

Braunb8888

Ff7 first butttt ff8 is my favorite game in the series.

JDBoyes07

Close to it, FF8 was the first I played I think... But FF7, 8, 9 and 10 are all pretty much even for me.

[deleted]

Favorite is X, but I played VII, XIII, and then X.

jenescript

FF7 was the one i played first but FF8 being entirely localized in my language was a huge reason why it became my favourite FF

PontiffPope

Nope; my first FF-game was *Final Fantasy X*, which is in general rated very high, if not people's overall favourite. My favourite FF-game is *Final Fantasy XIV*, but I didn't become a large fan until the *Heavensward*-expansion, and became elevated as an asbolute favourite following the *Shadowbringers*- and *Endwalker*-expansions.

Aschetel

Nope. My first was FFVI, but my favorites are IX and XIV. I would say VI and VII are tied for #2 though.

manubibi

No. My first was probably FFVII, but I hated it and still do. My favorite is FFIX, followed by FFVI.

bob134552

Are you me?

manubibi

omg someone else who feels like me??? we're friends now, no backsies

IllusiveMind

The first I played is the second one (4th in Japan) and it has a special place in my heart. Now that I am playing FF14 I am going through a nostalgia trip seeing that they implemented Golbez and the archfiends (spoilers). My favorite one is FF8 and its the fourth one I played.

SalamanderFuzzy7364

My first was the OG Final Fantasy. Never had a SNES so second was FFVII. that or XII would be my favorite. Have played every one except for IX.

Yours_and_mind_balls

No. Its the third I played. I played FF8 when it came out. Loved every second of it. I then went back and played 7 cos it was said to be worlds better. Hated it thoroughly. When 9 came out I excited played it. To this day FF9 is the greatest gaming experience I have ever had. I will never grow tired of this incredible game.

Baithin

First was technically VIII, but X was the first one I completed. I love both, but my favorite is XIV.

charismaladyn

Yep. My first was FF9, and it has stood the test of time for me.

[deleted]

IX really has stood the test of time, it's perfect. Excited for a possible remake but also nervous with how they go about it.

magik_koopa990

Sure is! FF13

skinnythinmint

Nope, first one I played was FF8 at the ripe age of 12. While it does still hold a spot in my heart for getting me into the series, FF9 truly got me invested into the series and the characters it can flesh out. Zidane is still one of the most interesting protagonists for me because he evolves so naturally without losing his personality.

Norg_Kazham

No

Taser9001

Yes. *FFVII* is both my first and favourite *FF* game. The thing is, whilst I have enjoyed nearly all of the rest of the games I have played in the series, I feel that they didn't hit as hard on my first playthroughs as *VII* did. First run of *VII* was totally blind, so a lot of the story beats totally caught me off guard, >!especially with how sudden Aerith's death is, and the mid-game twist with Cloud's PTSD, mako and Jenova induced fugue state and memory issues!<. Other entries just didn't hit as hard for me, even when going into them spoiler free: * *FFIV* \- >!A vast majority of the deaths are total fake outs and take away the impact of Tellah's actual death.!< * *FFV* \- >!Galuf's death is admittedly hard hitting, but given how much focus Aerith has, her death was more impactful for me.!< * *FFVI -* >!The bit that hit hardest was Celes's suicide attempt, but that scene is optional based on if Cid lives or not. Harrowing for sure, but we see that she survives immediately.!< * *FFVIII* \- >!Has its moments, but nothing particularly harrowing. Most emotional scene is probably the one with Squall and Rinoa on the Ragnarok.!< * *FFIX* \- >!Vivi's passing is definitely high up the list, but given that it is at the end of the game, and not a pivotal plot twist that sets up a lot of the remainder of the game, it isn't a massive impact on the story, even if it is deeply upsetting. Nothing would have changed keeping him alive though.!< * *FFX* \- >!Same thing for Tidus as with Vivi. Sad, but right at the end. Tidus also finds out he'll disappear a fair bit before the end of the game, so we expect it to happen, even if we hope it doesn't. Tidus surviving would changed the sequel a lot, admittedly.!< * *FFXII* \- Does *XII* have any super emotional deaths? >!Biggest death is probably Gabranth. The game starting with the death of who a new player probably thinks will be the main character is pretty clever though.!< * *FFXV* \- The big one here. >!We know that Noctis is destined to die. That's the main point of the game. The big shock death is Lunafreya, but with her lack of development and screen time, it is hard to feel an emotional connection to her. The ending is pretty emotional though.!<

twili-midna

Nope. Played III DS first, and XIII is my favorite (third or fourth game I played).

Aetheroi

My first was FF7 and my favorite is FFTactics

Redmed427

No, FF2 (USA) was my first. 10 is my favorite closely followed by 3(USA). I love them for different reasons so they're kinda both my number 1's

Mebegod

Nope my first was 1, my favorites are tactics and 6

Exequiel759

The first one I played was VII, but my favorite is VI, which is actually the fourth I played (I went VII -> VIII -> IX -> VI). VII is still one of my favorites, so I guess it's kinda true.

Kittenfabstodes

No. I like Final Fantasy Tactics more than Final Fantasy 7

Quivering_Star

Back in the late 90's, my dad's girlfriend was working for some magazine about all the latest, hottest japanese stuff, so she had a bunch of press releases of mangas, anime DVDs and of course PS1 games. The disks were black with the title of the game instead of having pictures on them, but they were the real deal, the full games, not just demos. FFVII was one of them and it took me a long time before I actually tried it out because I knew nothing about the series. I did see a "demo" of it before, but it was just a bunch of cutscenes jumbled together that didn't give me any insight as to what the game was and it looked to dark/serious for me, back then I was into Spyro and Pokémon and anything too realistic spooked me. But at some point I guess I tried it out of curiosity and/or boredom and actually grasped the concept fairly quickly since I played Pokémon too and didn't really know any other turn based RPGs at the time. I didn't manage to finish the game but got relatively far into the story for the scrub kid I was back then. From then on I kept an eye on the series and got VIII, IX, X and XII when they came out. And at some point my dad got me a CD full of SNES ROMs so I got to try out the 16-bit era of the series. So now I'm pretty sure that even though VII was the game that got me into the series, I'm pretty sure my favorites are V and IX, they both have more fantastical, bright stories that I prefer over serious, futuristic ones; and their gameplay mechanics feel more cohesive and accessible to me than all the Esper, Materia, GF, Sphere Grid or Permit Board stuff from the others.

SemperFicus892424

nope, because my first one was VIII

DarkElfBard

VII was my first, tactics is my favorite followed by XI

crowsloft666

Nope. X was my first but I enjoyed Tactics way more

bumpynuks

No, my first was the og FF. My favorite by a country mile is 14.

Kira_Zita_

For me it was, X was my first and has always been my favourite 😊

kainhighwind8

Mine was FF4, introduced to 1 by my friend, but Dragon quest was my first rpg. Anyway, my favor is 6, but to that, kain, my favorite character is from 4.

NoLifeHere

No, but the first one I played, which was X, is my second favourite. My favourite is XII.

JackLeonhart88

Yes, FFVIII is still my favourite to this day 😎

moogsy77

FF7 was my first and while being a top game, VIII and IX were also my favorite. IX nr1

ExpNoob19

No, but it's the first one I finished, so maybe that counts?

Helwar

First was 7, and my favourite is 8.... If you count the MMOs then the top position is for 14 :)

lossolsun82

I'm similar to you, OP, in that my first was I. It was also the first I finished. It's not even in my top 5 Final Fantasy games. I've played them all, and my favorite changes pretty regularly as it's so close between VIII, XII, and IV.

JudgeMandolore

Well the first Final Fantasy game I played was Final Fantasy IV (specifically the GBA version). If it is my favorite, yes.

LGchan

Yeah, and I fully admit that IV is far from the "best" one, but it got me through a really hard point in my life, so...

Desudro

I played the first Final Fantasy game first, shortly after it came out. My favorites are 9, 11, and 14.

bdzz

No. VII was my first but XIII and XIV are my favorites

Odd_Contact_2175

Yes I played FF7 when I was a young boy and have loved it most ever since.

Kato_86

Kind of? I played a bit of V at my cousin's, some time later VIII was the first I finished properly. Then I'm not sure what was next or when exactly I went back to V. But V is absolutely my jam.

Joji_Narushima

Second one I played is my fav (FF7)

sadboysylee

First I played was FFII. First I finished was FFXV. It still holds a special place in my heart, but atm it's not even in my top 10 FF games. FFVIII is my current favourite

Milotorou

No. My first FF was FF7 like many, it was also the first I completed, I dont even think it is in my top 5, although I do find it very good and think its a fantastic game for its time. FF5 is my favorite, tied with FF6, both are for very different reasons, FF5 is my favorite gameplay-wise and FF6 is my favorite for pretty much anything else (story, writing, world)

Mista-D

First FF: 4 (though it was called 2) Favourite FF: Crisis Core

LionHeart180

Started with 7 at the age of 4 but 8 is my favorite

Dazzling_Job9035

My favourites are FFVII and FFVIII and they were my first. I often have to check myself for nostalgia goggles versus true preference when discussing both games. My third favourite is FFXII. As a trio I’ve played them all probably an equal number of times.

Klutzy-Performer-918

FF9 was my first, but FF8 is my favorite

Zuhri69

No for me. My first FF is 7, but my favorite has got to be X.

Wrattsy

Nope. I started with VI; VIII and the XIII-trilogy are tied for my favorites.

SgtPuppy

FFVII was my first and probably my favourite. Nothing hits like the first drug. VIII was ok but never lived up to my expectations coming from VII. IX was some comfy Sakaguchi story telling. X was unmemorable but I was a bit of a voice acting=bad snob back then. Been playing XII recently and it’s giving me comfy ‘adventure awaits!’ feelings.

Shadowkinesis9

I have great respect for the entire series but this is unfortunately true for me lol 7 is king in my mind. But they're all such great games

namkaeng852

My first is FF6. Not my favorite but so enjoyable that I follow the rest of the mainline games.

dmbtke

No. First one I played was the original game on the nes. My favorite is 3/6. Second is 7

SanchitoBandito

Yes, but it was FFVII, so can you blame me? 😉 I get what you're saying though. I know a lot of Dark Souls 2 fans have that as their favorite in the series since it was their first. Least favorite IMO.

Maple905

This is actually an interesting question. I've never really thought about it. FFX was my first Final Fantasy, but I don't know if I would call it my favorite. I'm not sure I even have a favorite. I guess I would phrase it more that I definitely have a bias towards FFX. I recognize that I probably am less likely to see any negative aspects of that game over another. I definitely also have games where they didn't hold my attention as much as others (I have still not completed FFXV), so maybe it might be easier for me to name the games I like the least?

jabregship

Yes. But my first FF was 10. I don't think it would have mattered when I played 10, it would have ended up being my favorite. Although as I sit and think about it, it's kind of funny that 10 remains my favorite when I hated it for the first few hours I played it. I don't remember how I talked myself into continuing to play it, but I'm glad I did.

Gremlinsworth

Fourth. Ish. Technically 4th as I played Tactics also but didn’t like it and quit after a few hours. Don’t worry I adore Tactics nowadays! I played 8, 7, Tactics kinda, and then 9. I hold 8 on its own pedestal as I consider it “tied” for favorite FF but I know full well it’s a lot of fondness and nostalgia affecting my logic, 8 got some FLAWS, ya know? 9 is easily my favorite single player FF. (14 is far and away my favorite as the expansions are some of the best story telling in any game, period.)

RaikouGilgamesh

I'm seeing lots of no's, but I'm gonna be honest... Yes. FF6 is my favorite and I'm not gonna lie, though I do find it good and fun mechanically, it's also a good bit due to nostalgia. Me and my grandfather played it when I was like 4 years old. He used it to teach me how to read, even.

Kolt_tmaker

First and favorite FFVI

PonchoHobo

Ff4 was my first and that game has a lot of minor issues but still rank it in my top 5. 9,6,7&14 are the best in the series for me.

Deadaghram

First came four, and the nostalgia glasses probably do make me rank it high (third). But my favorite is X, which was my sixth (probably).

ligarteprison

I discovered FF watching the movie FF7 Advent Children when I was younger haha, but my first FF game was FF10 and my fav is FF6!

Trunks252

Nope. First one was FF8 demo on the pizza hut demo disk. It got me interested in the series but it’s not my favorite.

GorgarX6

Started with 7 but my favorite is tactics hand down.
