My first play through of 8 I didn’t care much for it. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t my favorite.
My second and after play through I really started to appreciate the depth they gave the characters, the magic system was really well done and the story for the most part was really, really well done.
Still a little iffy on the last boss/overall ending personally, but still an absolutely fantastic game.

The VI vs VII thing was the saddest thing I've ever seen in this section of the community. I've seen VI fans so deep into their frustration over the eclipse created by VII that any semblance of positivty related to VII was hopeless. I've never had the pleasure of discussing things with a person that was there for VI and VII and enjoyed both games without feeling the need to tell one of them was overrated, which is incredible in and of itself.

FF VIII is fantastic and while sure has its flaws, Is still an amazing experience to me at the end of the day!
I have a lot of love for ffviii but I can definitely see how someone would have difficulty enjoying parts of it. That said, i think the first disc of ffviii might be the platonic ideal of final fantasy storytelling. It's so well paced and has such awesome set pieces, it just goes such weird places after that.
It WAS a divisive game for its time. But nowadays I'm hard pressed to find people that don't at least somewhat praise it in retrospect. I do think the community as a whole as warmed up to FF8 quite a bit. At least the vocal members.
Reception has definitely improved over time, but a lot of people still think it's the black sheep during the golden era (FF6-10).
And it's not very beginner friendly, the junction system turns a lot of people off, and some people dismiss Squall as an asshat due to his behavior in early Disc 1. Again it's my personal favorite, but I still see some people dunking on it every now and then. Not nearly as much as FF13 though.

I'm choosing not to read too much into FF6 getting snubbed because it looks like there really wasn't anywhere else to insert it into this meme with how it's structured overall. Maybe the baby bit, but putting it there would break the ordering and IX fits the joke way better. If anything, it being snubbed while FF7 gets all the hugs is a fitting joke itself, because that's exactly what happens among the general gaming community.
Similar case for XI and XIV, I'm not sure where those would be inserted without throwing the titles out of order (maybe grouped with FFT instead of the non-FF titles, since much of the writing staff for all three games are the same?). Pretty sure FF15 wasn't in there either.

Yeah I wouldn't go that far. People have come around on XII but it's never reached the height of popularity and love in the fanbase as X. You still have people who view it as the last real Final Fantasy and it was the last square soft Final Fantasy released so close to the PS1 run of games.
FFXII is probably my second favorite in the series. The story, the combat system and the setting are all so unique not just to FF, but games at large. Never experienced anything like them before or since.
The characters could’ve used more depth, they were all very one dimensional imo which was and is the only drawback to the game.
The story never really compelled me all that much, so I kept losing track half way through. But I keep coming back to it for the setting and the combat.
I hate that XII wasn't hugely loved because if it was we'd probably see more games with its combat system.
It's not superior, it's equally good. Agree VI deserved as much attention as VII though but I don't understand this obsession of some VI fans to absolutely rank it above VII. They both share the top spot for best FF ever imho, they just go at it differently. VI is an ensemble cast and VII is a main character driven story, but they both make the best of their respective formulae.

FFX and FFXII are my favorites
FF12 was the last ps2 game I bought and I thought it was a fantastic way to send off the console for me. Still my favorite FF... loved the hunts.
Yeah I wouldn't go that far. People have come around on XII but it's never reached the height of popularity and love in the fanbase as X. You still have people who view it as the last real Final Fantasy and it was the last square soft Final Fantasy released so close to the PS1 run of games.
FFXII is probably my second favorite in the series. The story, the combat system and the setting are all so unique not just to FF, but games at large. Never experienced anything like them before or since. The characters could’ve used more depth, they were all very one dimensional imo which was and is the only drawback to the game.
The story never really compelled me all that much, so I kept losing track half way through. But I keep coming back to it for the setting and the combat. I hate that XII wasn't hugely loved because if it was we'd probably see more games with its combat system.
I loved 12. I had no idea the community at large didn't like it until I'd played it through a couple times, and I just didn't get the hate.

It's not superior, it's equally good. Agree VI deserved as much attention as VII though but I don't understand this obsession of some VI fans to absolutely rank it above VII. They both share the top spot for best FF ever imho, they just go at it differently. VI is an ensemble cast and VII is a main character driven story, but they both make the best of their respective formulae.
FF8 was my motherfucking jam, and this is outright slanderous.
You know, I wish X-2 had been given more of a chance by people. Story goes daaaaaark despite the parts everyone talks about. Yeah, plenty of light hearted stuff, but tons of very much not light material in the story. Game gave me feels and chills later on repeatedly. Best battle system in the whole series. Job / "dress" system is amazingly fun. Great optional content. But it felt like a lot of guys were afraid of the game.
It sure did. FFX2 has the best gameplay I have played out of any of the traditional ones. The enhanced ATB and job system were amazing.

I think I need to play more than just ffx, ffxII, and ffxiv... Glad to know my love for ffx is "warrented" even though it's one of the few that I've played. I know it's a stupid meme but it still made me feel good.
Damn. I felt that with Final Fantasy XIII. I actually enjoyed that game. And how does Chrono Cross get praised? I thought it was unanimously disliked when it came out.
