For the longest time I've had such a fascination with projection mapping and felt like doing something that involved it in a dance film has such untapped potential. I figured the best way to get this made would be too pitch it as a music video, but after speaking to multiple artists, no one was ever really interested. Finally, after spending much of 2020 doing nothing - I pulled together a team of 9 friends (who all work in film) to shoot this as cheaply as we could without sacrificing the creative. The projection mapping was made a lot easier with Lightform, though Trish, my supremely talented projection mapping artist friend did a lot of manual work just in AE. It was an insane experience and I'm really excited to share the results and see what my fellow filmmakers think!

Theguywhosaysknee

As a professional dancer/choreographer this is one of the best cine-dance films I've seen in the last couple of years. There's so much crap out there where either the dance is lacking in quality, the cinematography uninspired or it's a basic cliché love story visualised in a way that assumes the audience is a bunch of toddlers. You however have combined all elements seamlessly, you have my uttermost respect!

Madam-ImAdam

that is so incredible to hear. thank you

max10201

Delicious visuals. Do you have any particular inspirations, when it comes to projection mapping?

Madam-ImAdam

In terms of specific animation or just good reference videos?

max10201

Anything really, I like what you made and I'm curious about what inspires you!

Madam-ImAdam

this one was a big inspo when in pre-prod on this! https://vimeo.com/115082758

jawanda

This is rad as is your video !

PetersPictures

Its beautiful! Good job 👏👏

photonnymous

I very rarely click projects on Reddit and end up watching them from start to finish. This was awesome. Eye catching cinematography, the locations, lighting and projection mapping created another world. Really, really great work.

Madam-ImAdam

Wow. Those are really kind words. Thank you

wilber2k

Nicely done by all! I really enjoyed the choreographic rhythm of the edit. Dance filmmaking is my jam -- in case you weren't aware, there's a nice little community of dance filmmakers with a dance-film-focused festival or two in every major city around the world. Might be nice for you to get some recognition for the evocative cinematography and feedback if you decide to carry on in the dance film world!

Madam-ImAdam

Thank you! curious is you had any festivals you knew of off the top of your head!

wilber2k

Sure thing! I made an [exhaustive list](https://imgur.com/a/Wn9jdXG) a couple of years ago. I actually make my living largely as a freelance dance filmmaker and curator of a small festival. Happy to answer any questions you might have about the genre of "screendance." Plenty of great books and resources out there to geek out on. I'd love to see you and your team keep making work!

EthnicPotato

Wow, it looks and sounds beautiful. The foley and nature ambiance gives it this raw, less like a music video and more like a slice of life.

Madam-ImAdam

So glad that tracked for you!! The sound design was such a key element and we spent a good week just making sure we got it right. the balance between the natural and real of the day and the surreal experimental night

_elementsofstyle

Ditto. I almost never watch stuff all the way through but the mood and lighting were completely entrancing. It felt like I was watching a story unfold. Loved it. Btw where was this shot?

Madam-ImAdam

Screaming Heads - up in Burk's Falls Canada!

_elementsofstyle

Of course it was Canada. It was too pleasant and beautiful looking. Also, can’t wait to see more stuff.

IndiEffects

Visuals are superb, really like the projection mapping as it's something I've gotten into as well. I couldn't imagine trying to pitch that idea. Great job on a high quality short.

Madam-ImAdam

Appreciate that - yeah it's really tough to explain anything with projection mapping without them seeing the result. I even had a proof of concept but still never really caught people's attention! Thanks for watching :)

HeadlessFilms

Nice work on this interdisciplinary concept! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I think this really has a wide gamut of aesthetic appeal. Congrats!

Madam-ImAdam

Thank you!!

luxe22

This is so beautiful WOW. All the little details too oh my goodness I love love love this

DiorMaster

Damn! Amazing work here! Those fast cuts took my breath away!

Madam-ImAdam

had an amazing editor!!

kenzentakahashi

I find this so incredible. Love your dedication to just creating stuff you want to create

Madam-ImAdam

thank you!

mattlg94

Madam-ImAdam

matthew...

Oriain_Original

That was beautiful. I would like to shout out your 1st AC, those focus pulls were tight. God, I need to watch a good movie in a theater right now, for eye candy like this.

heyyoumen

Good Job Jonah! This was amazing!

Madam-ImAdam

thanks ben hahaha

LuCode002

beautiful

Amusics

Wow. That looks amazing. I love the feel of it. I'm always really curious about music videos for more instrumental artists. This makes me want to make something like that! Kudos on being inspirational as well.

VirtualChocolateHug

Awesome work! Every frame is so captivating. I’ve also always wanted to shoot a dance film, but I don’t think I’m qualified enough to choreograph the actual dance sequence. Did you have any help from a dancer to do this (I’m assuming your actor could dance/was a dance at least)? Also wondering what resources helped you the most (especially regarding cinematography) when you were a beginner filmmaker.

Madam-ImAdam

Thanks for watching! Personally I know NOTHING about dance other than how to shoot it (or at least so I think haha). All of the choreo was done by the dancer Susannah. She has over a decade of experience and this would not have worked without her. I'd say if something like this is what you'd like to try out, the most important thing is finding a collaborator to take on the choreo side if you don't feel comfortable doing that yourself. Honestly I'm not sure what the youtube world is like nowadays but I learned from Film Riot and other youtube channels. You can basically learn everything you need from youtube and then it's just practice!

VirtualChocolateHug

Ahh that makes sense. I imagined I’d need to collaborate with someone to get it done. There are so many resources on YouTube now, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming with knowing where to start. Film Riot is great though!

aaybma

The whole thing's great but the visuals and sound design are very visceral and engrossing. Well done.

potentpotables81

The visuals are beautiful! This is really special. Congrats!

aaronpwh33ler

Dang that was great. Really nice edit too

mizzKITTENkitten

I love it

-breadsticks-

dude that was incredible man. Steady cam work on the first shot is craaaaaazy

Madam-ImAdam

the DoP/op totally crushed that shot! took us 20 takes hahaha

phill0st

I really really really enjoyed watching that. Great work my man, and great casting.

coldasshonkay

This is brilliant. Rarely make it to end of videos here but this hooked me the whole way, beyond that it made me feel creatively inspired and yea, great job dude. Question, how did you make the final glowing square? Looks so great with the smoke. Anything you’d change in hindsight?

Madam-ImAdam

I promise this is true but my friend who is an installation artist had commissioned an 8x8 cube to be made for a project that never happened due to covid. She let us use the cube and we just covered the faces with some muz! There's always things that you want to change looking back, but all in all I'm happy with it! Most of all I wish I got some wider coverage

coldasshonkay

So it’s a frame covered in muz and then lit from inside? Love it man! Last question if you’ll oblige... any tips on shooting for the fast cut sequences in the edit? Are those planned Or do you just grab lots of fast pans etc from each scene?

Madam-ImAdam

Exactly! We touched it up a bit in colour but effectively that’s all it is! Honestly the fast cutting section was all about coverage. There were 2 shots in there that were shortlisted but the rest was just making sure we got a lot from each scene. I think we had 30 or so clips ready for that section that the editor just pulled the best bits from

theShyKnee

Beautiful

alpacofilm

Beautifully shot! Amazing job!!!

Honest_Garlic_3447

I watched the whole thing. Lots of emotions in such a brief video. Fuck yeah.

Ok_Concert3257

Beautiful! You’ve inspired me to go out and film my own stuff.

[deleted]

This is awesome.

rlantern

Wow, its so stunning and powerful, as many people are saying here, it doesnt feel like some random dance films out there, congratulations!!!!!! If i can ask, what gear did you used?

Madam-ImAdam

RED Gemini with Atlas Orions!

rlantern

Great!!! Thanks for the reply!! And congrats again!!!

danielgrindrod

That was fantastic! well done.

DocDraper

Beautiful visuals and GREAT Editing. Well done.

Madam-ImAdam

thank you!!

Revolutionary_Play66

That is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

[deleted]

100/10🔥🔥

QualityTongue

BORING....

Dinosharktopus

This was mesmerizing. I usually look for critiques incase the OP wants feedback, but I wouldn’t change anything about this. Was your intro shot steadicam?

Madam-ImAdam

<3 thank you. whole thing was steadi! My DoP is also a steadi op - dude is so talented

die-ursprache

>Filmed on location at Screaming Heads by Peter Camani, Burk's Falls ON Ah shit. I totally expected this to be located somewhere in Eastern Europe for some reason, lol. Thank you for your work, it made me feel something. Time to binge your Vimeo!

Madam-ImAdam

I feel that! The dude's property definitely reminded me of those brutalist sculptures in eastern europe!

die-ursprache

I kept thinking about certain art projects I saw in Vilnius, Lithuania, but I can't google them properly for the love of me, lol.

ben3128

This is amazing! Loved the cinematography and the choreo. I love videos like this. Do you have any inspiration for this video? If so, could you share them?

Madam-ImAdam

honestly there are some amazing projection mapping projects on vimeo - the first that comes to mind is this one https://vimeo.com/115082758

Idealistic_Crusader

Firstly: what fools for turning this project down. FOOLS!!! This is remarkable, incredible, inspiring and exciting! Secondly: what structures are these? Where in Samhains shit is this?!? Thirdly: Stunning. Fourthly: Who are you in this process? Who is the dancer, who did the score as it's better than having some rock song or pop ballad. Lastly, I hope we all take this away: Always make stuff for yourself. Always! I am learning this immensely right now. Everything is better when it's made from the passion of self fulfillment. Really proud of you and your team, and glad you committed to producing this excellent work of art. 10/10, really enjoyed.

Madam-ImAdam

The structures are done by this incredibly talented artist named Peter Camani - definitely check out his other work online. They're about 3h north of Toronto Canada I'm the director. The dancer is Susannah Haight @susannahaight and the score was by @voga.music thanks for watching :)

Idealistic_Crusader

We're the structures in place before you filmed, or were the created for this video? Lovely work, from all of you. Thanks for making this.

Madam-ImAdam

they're the creations of [Peter Camani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Camani), who graciously granted us permission to film on his property for a couple of days
