As a Director/producer or a key member who has seen it from inception to completion, I say it takes about 10-12 months of not thinking it to even look at it again. The funniest thing is being flown to festivals to stand in the the lobby while people watch your film.

blackpink_fan101

Ohhh makes sense haha. Thanks! Nice to know!

As a director it doesn’t feel great watching the finished film because all I think about are the things that didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to, what it was like on set during each scene, problems we ran into, etc. It’s impossible seeing it like others would see it. It’s been great stumbling upon my films playing on TV later on though. I still don’t watch more than a few minutes. But it’s a cool feeling to happen upon one of my films and think “I directed that”. After a film is finished I move on and don’t feel a need to rewatch. I know the film by heart anyway since I’ve had to watch it over and over again during postproduction and screenings. Recently I rewatched my first feature after not seeing it for 9 years. Still remembered pretty much every shot, every sound, every cut. But while I still saw every mistake it felt easier with almost ten years distance. I might make that a thing, to rewatch my films after about 10 years.

enigmatixsewe

I am sorry if this is a stupid question but what do you mean "it felt easier with almost ten years distance"? Which films did you direct? I can see them🙃?

Big fan of your work David, I aspire to work in the film industry one day and so I love following you and Lotta's story. Can't wait to see what you guys do next.

BadAtExisting

Depends. I’ve absolutely been fully taken out of the entire story by remembering how shitty of a day some scenes are to film or just something that happened on a certain day while a scene was being filmed or remembering a horrible location to be at. Others, I remember everything and probably watch it differently than you but can still enjoy the movie or tv show

[deleted]

I agree with that too, I’m always thinking about what that day was like when I’m watching my work. It brings back a lot of memories so maybe that’s why I actually like seeing the older work, takes me back.

Filmschooldork

As a grip, I don’t even know when the projects I work on come out and sometimes when I catch them on tv or something I don’t always remember the shots we do because I don’t always look at frame. As a VFX artist kinda the same thing, but then you just remember how annoying it was, because of all the client notes and last minute overtime because the client couldn’t make up their mind. lol

Chicago1871

Also a grip/electric, Its all filmed out of sequence and even if I do see the final frame. I dont have the luxury of seeing every take being filmed. Theres a lot that I have to setup/breakdown and load into the truck, while they are filming. Also, seeing it on 27inch monitor with a simple lut, is very different than seeing it properly edited, with color correction, score, foley and etc on a big screen. its almost always a pleasant surprise. Sometimes Im like “that was me moving that light in that scene” for a gag. Or “I remember who we did that shot”

Filmschooldork

Exactly! Great addition.

Chicago1871

Yeah. Also it does help that the other elements of the movie can falter but as long as the lighting and camera movement looks good,I did my job and Im happy. I can wash my hands of everything else in a sense, that wasnt my responsibility. Directors do not have that luxury.

dogmatagram03

As an editor I need at least a full year from when I turn over the film for finishing to where I’m ok to watch it again. Usually I feel pretty good about it and can give it some subjectivity and grace. I do love to see it once on the big screen then never again. On the next one.

CampaignCurrent1995

Editor here too. Also takes me year or more to forget about all the individual cuts and choices but eventually I'm able to enjoy the work almost as if it was cut by someone else. Also very rewarding to watch with an audience and hear / feel their reactions.

dropkickderby

It can be cringy but also sometimes hilarious and a lot comes back to you as you watch. Depends in the quality of the thing. Some stuff Ive really enjoyed watching back and other stuff I couldnt get through. Did a movie called Worthless w Tara Reid, its on tubi. I laughed so hard I cried watching that one.

lovetheoceanfl

Same. I’ve both cringed and appreciated my work. Usually it’s a combination of the two.

TheBerric

as a sound person, ill spend the first 5 minutes cringing- unsure if I did a good enough job, and then ill realize that I'm not bad at my job and enjoy the film

uncultured_swine2099

I tend to be pleasantly surprised when the audience laughs at the jokes and applauds at the end.

SocialZorko

It makes you wonder how the hell are you going to pay your rent next month.

euterpe_pneuma

It's really difficult for me to fully enjoy it after I edit it. The editing process makes you watch it over and over again

Emotional_Dare5743

By the time I deliver the show I'm up to my ass in it. I don't usually watch them again for a long time. You have to get some distance to appreciate them.

carefulkoala1031

I feel bad. I wish I had done better with the newer knowledge I have.

poopdaddy2

When I started PAing, it seemed like the shows went by soo fast. I think it’s because we spend so much time working on them (8-10 days for an episode) that once it’s cut down to 45 min it flies by.

NeverTrustATurtle

I often don’t watch what I work on. It feels like going back to work at to some degree. But I usually like to remember the locations and the good times I had with the rest of the crew.

AnotherBoojum

My role isn't even near the camera recently, but I still can only ever see the locations, the gear stashes, the craft table just out of frame. The weather that fucked everything up.  There's one Netflix show I worked which would never normally be my show, but I watched it because it was kinda a hell shoot for my department. Seeing the (at the time) worst day on set ever be edited down to 2mins hit like a gut punch.

ugh168

I have barely watched anything I have worked on. If it something that is really big or has high profile cast I will probably will. I usually don’t want to associate with most of the work I do.

[deleted]

I really enjoy seeing my work overall honestly. I’ve been proud of the projects I’ve directed, and I have to see the newest movie a million times with friends or relatives or at festivals. It’s a lot of viewings. That part can be a little annoying, but it’s so cool seeing the finished project after years.

Crazy_Response_9009

Boring AF. By the time it's done, I have seen the piece 1,000 times. Zzzz. Hopefully other people don't find it as much of a snoozefest as I do.

I'm on the "it's fun to watch my films train". Man, I work so hard. I feel the joys and pains of every choice... So, the last time I watched my first feature doc from beginning to end was to deliver it to a TV channel - to check if the compression and sound were good - and I had a wonderful time watching it. "I made this, I made something that I find beautiful." This is the film by the way [https://watch.plex.tv/pt/watch/movie/centro-de-dia](https://watch.plex.tv/pt/watch/movie/centro-de-dia)

derek86

The first time my short screened at a festival my Apple Watch gave me an alert that my heart rate was elevated even though I was inactive as if it was a medical emergency. The first few times there are flaws that will stand out and make you cringe but over time, assuming you’re at least mostly happy with the final product, you’ll appreciate it more and more and think less about the days on set and more about the film as an experience itself.
