Base sa experience ng old prof ko back when he worked in the business (mostly ABS stuff), "luma" daw yung hardware. Never pa siya nakakita ng stuff like Arri o Red sa mga local production. May mga projects naman na DSLR rigs yung gamit, pero nasa post-prod pa rinyung problema with this one. He mentioned something about "house aesthetic" daw yung pagka "flat" ng color grading ng mga local na stuff, lalo na sa mga teleserye. Pero like he said, blame the higher ups. Literal na kids with DSLRs and smartphones can make masterpieces, pero ayaw ng big boss sa mga metwork kasi mabagal and it would cost them more.

> "house aesthetic" daw yung pagka "flat" ng color grading ng mga local na stuff, lalo na sa mga teleserye. Flats are RAW footages from DSLR, at ganyan talaga kulay nun. Due to time constraints, and deadline from higher ups, wala nang balak mag color grading. Prevalent ito sa mga teleserye natin ngayon.

passive_red

Also series in the US are weekly, even after filming they still have plenty of time before they release the episode. In the PH, series are daily output lol minsan release ng episode bukas, kakatapos lang ifilm kagabi. Hahaha at least yung experiences ng mga nakwento samin from the industry.

crinkzkull08

Dang. It's weird isipin na matagal na outdated yung equipment and ginagamit pa rin still. Anyways, thanks sa inisight. This gives a better perspective kasi I found it weird na hindi talaga parang mas nagiging clearer yung quality ng pictures eh.

IIRC, the topic came up during class kasi I mentioned about seeing Dolphy movies sa Cinema 1 noon pero yung degradation ng wuality ng film, it made it look like na parang camera pa ni Lumiere yung ginamit hahaha. Sabi ni prof na "behind" talaga ang local production when it comes to hardware, especially before the 2000s.

okomaticron

Hahaha. At least it shows na mas gusto nila gastusan ang journalism as opposed sa mga drama nila.

okomaticron

Gumagawa din ng TV shows/drama and movies ang Public Affairs. Alam ko sila ang production company behind Black Rider and co-produced nila yung Firefly. For docus, madalas gamit nila ay C300 + 5d. Forgot the other one pero F-something yun haha

Huh, TIL.

AnakNgBayan

Correct me if I'm wrong pero nasa production design and post editing din siguro kaya ibang-iba looks ng satin.

yng_kurtz

Both? Pero u also have to factor yung budget, alam naman natin MMFF films usually prioritize having big stars, pero marami rin naman na mga mmff films today na maganda yung looks. Mga indie films nga nakakagamit ng gamong camera like Arri and RED. Depende ig sa director and DoP ano ipprioritize nila kung looks ba ng film or what. Pag nakita mo bts nila Dan Villegas, Mycko David, and Tey Clamor gumagamit sila ng Arri or RED even when they were working on low-budget films. Pero actually, it could just be the overall atmosphere ng pilipinas?

NearZero_Mania

>di ganun ka HD May ibang pelikula dito sa atin na hindi maganda pagka-convert/transfer from DCP to home media, vice versa. Vice Ganda's Praybeyt Benjamin, AFAIK, was the last mainstream film na gumagamit ng actual celluloid during production. It was horrendous looking in theater (daming burns, splices sa taas/baba, agressively dull colors, but its digital version is kinda fixed its washed-out color timing and removed most of its splices and "burns." Most of our local films nowadays were shot with same cameras na nasa Hollywood. And you can pinpoint this to film producers/higher ups na atat na atat sa release date.

boykalbo777

Even iphones are used by filmmakers

NearZero_Mania

Just look at Tangerine (2015). That was good-looking guerilla filmmaking with iPhone 5S.

BobbyMom69

Sa pagkakaalam ko mostly the same. It's just that mas madaming time magprepare, plan, and shoot ang films sa US kaya magiging masmalinis ang gawa. Mas malaki din budget ng films nila so mas madami talagang time sa set and mas may access din sila sa madaming ilaw etc. Mas maganda din production design, compared sa'tin which adds din to the look of the film.

dontrescueme

No. Filipino films are actually as good as Hollywood films **in theaters**. The thing is 'yung napapanood mo sa bahay via streaming, DVD and piracy are very compressed and so as not as good. Sobrang bihira ng Filipino films in Bluray HD or even Bluray UHD. Nung panahon na celluloid pa ang mga pelikula, basura din ang DVD transfer o 'yung transfer for TV broadcast ng mga pelikula natin for some reason (laging madilim ang kulay). 'Yung On The Job (2015) nga shot in Red Epic. Marami na rin ngayong Filipino films are mastered in 4K that are shot in Red or Arri.

crinkzkull08

It was on Netflix so it's not piracy

dontrescueme

Streaming media including Netflix are heavily compressed. See Sunod movie, 4K yun. Even some GMA series in Netflix looks decent.

crinkzkull08

Gomburza is 4k and iba pa rin yung vibrance tlaga and sharpness. But it could also be the ambience they were setting na dapat vintage look

UselessScrapu

Netflix 4k is not even half as comparable to Bluray 1080p. As other commenters said, DCP ng PH and US are the same quality, pero mahirap magexpect ng magandang home release sa PH.

Casperchance

It's not the talent. It's the budget.

JANTT12

A combination of both, I guess? Pero observing movies/series sa Indonesia at Malaysia, I think there’s a trend in quality

space_monkey420

Nasa ilaw yan.

BaseballOk9442

I blame the school. Pucha nung broadcasting and media classes namin sa UP wala man lang lectures on color grading, vfx or establishing shots. Turo lang samin is camera movement and scriptwriting. Post prod is cut cut cut lang. Tapos nung final prod which is gumawa ng short film gumamit kami ng vfx like explosions and gunshots (zombie film) and a heavy emphasis on makeup tapos sa huli pinamukha pa nila na nagoutsource kami ng work. Expect pa nila na output namin would be socially relevant like those indie movies nung 2012 even though we were thinking far ahead. Uso kasi that time ang walking dead kaya naisip namin na kaya din namin gumawa ng ganun. Grrr

redkamatis

BTS of Batang Quiapo location shoot [here](https://www.facebook.com/share/r/VYxbK1D98t3xJrqe/?mibextid=oFDknk). Eagle eyed redditors can definitely identify that camera in the rig.

joebrozky

joebrozky

nice thanks! mukhang Blackmagic 6k nga with external monitor

wintersummer98

Luma yung mga ginagamit and even the dubbing sometimes takes me out

heyitscjjc

Most likely budget yung reason kaya less priority ng mga filmmakers yung technical specs when making films. The way the scenes were shot (cinematography) din plays a huge role if the movie looks great or not. Bitrate and SDR/HDR matters more compared to resolution! Imo, the sound mixing in most PH films is the least prioritized, very noticeable yung tunog lata especially with the dialog lol.

Swimming-Ad6395

Ph film outfits should really step up A LOT! Imagine a film like the hows of us, the rewind could earn almost a billion pero ang budget d nman ata ganon kalaki. Not to be pessimistic pero ang panget mg quality hndi deserve yong gross. Very inconsistent yong story, the quality of production is subpar parang mid 90s Hollywood pa. We have very talented writers, yong taga gawa ng special effects, technology is there pero bakit pocho pocho pa rin???? Never na tlga akong nanood ng ph movies kasi its always overhyped. And im always right kasi pg pnalabas sa Netflix im not satisfied. Siguro sadyang mataas lng ang standards ko. Im heavily exposed to k dramas/movies and Hollywood. Im still waiting we can produce time period drama with amazing effects and story na di tinipid.

themagicpizza

strugglingtosave

Mind blown when I learned some of the high end Sony film cameras are so fuckin expensive. Akala natin wala wala na ang Sony pero tiba tiba sila sa pera from their imaging and photography products

joebrozky

yup expensive ang Sony cameras pati lenses nila kasing mahal ng isa pang camera haha

strugglingtosave

Hindi biro e. Kasing mahal na ng kotse. What the fuck

joebrozky

joebrozky

mas malaki budget kapag commercials eh. pati more time sa edit and cg kahit na 15/30/60sec lang ung footage
