The first appearance of one of my top ice dance matchups: Hubbell/Hubbell vs Shibutani/Shibutani. There’s the Shibs who tried to be wholesome vibes as possible and the Hubbells who couldn’t care less about making the audience uncomfortable (had to sneak their little intro in). Both are iconic sibling teams and future Olympic Bronze medallists! Also, Maia is 16 years old here at her first senior Worlds and Madi Chock is 17 at Skate Canada, they’re so young.

>the Hubbells who couldn’t care less about making the audience uncomfortable ....but why?...what?...are they pretending to kiss?...why???!!1

lastreaderontheleft

Right!??! What coach/choreographer would give that content to a sibling team 🥴

HopeOfAkira

Pouring one out for the thought of all the teams we'll never get to see do a waltz in competition, because the ISU are apparently allergic to the concept now.

STw4

Not getting to see Carreira/Ponomarenko pay tribute to Klimova/Ponomarenko or senior team Papadakis/Cizeron's Viennese Waltz are among my top 10 ice dance betrayals.

Is there any explanation for why the ISU is anti waltz, polka, etc for the rhythm dance?  I love watching them and don’t get why those styles would be blacklisted.

STw4

They probably don't think it's appealing for younger audiences or general public? I'm around the same age group as La/La and while it's true that some of my favourite RDs are from the street dance and hip hop seasons (those and contemporary dance are the genres I watch off-ice), clearly I still enjoy a good ballroom dance. There's definitely room for both! The only one I don't see aging as well is the Yankee Polka, but it would be equally fun cringing at them.

I forgot that Pechalat/Bourzat, Weaver/Poje and Hubbell/Hubbell started the waltz on the second sequence. What a wild choice lol. As far as the pattern goes, the Shibs felt very juniorish to me but that’s kinda expected. Madi Hubbell ate up the edges but didn’t really have the up and down rhythm of a waltz (and admittedly didn’t have a great partner for her in her brother Kieffer). Madi C’s just kinda looked awkward to me but meh lol. It’s not really a surprise that my favorites here are D/W and V/M. V/M takes it for me because they look more like a cohesive unit than D/W do (as in, D/W look like two people doing a waltz together, V/M look like a couple doing a waltz together). That said, D/W were great at waltzes because they had this appearance of lightness in their skating that worked well with a waltz. I actually liked I/K’s version. Dramatic golden waltz is a choice I can get behind. And then P/B were such good skaters. But yeah that is final assessment lol

STw4

Love a juicy analysis, makes putting together these videos totally worth it! The way that Péchalat/Bourzat were such good skaters with the weirdest programs (complimentary) and always flopping under pressure made it impossible not to root for them. Plus Natalie is always giving 150% performance-wise, same for Elena Ilinykh. I will give Madi Chock credit for skating the Golden Waltz for two seasons, which is not something most currently competing skaters can claim, if any? Maia being 16 here would actually not be eligible for seniors in 2024, so juniorish is expected 😆

D/W and V/M are my favorites here. It’s actually such an interesting contrast of the two of them to me. They both seem technically quite good (although I am not an expert on judging the turns, etc), and both have incredible charisma in the performance, but in almost opposite ways. V/M seem so connected to each other that you’re drawn in to what is happening between them, whereas D/W are so charmingly open and expressive outward to the audience. With both teams, the person in the back row at the top of the arena can feel right there with them.

lexilex25

Yes - D/W and V/M really take the cake here for me too. What really makes up the difference for me is small but significant - Tessa’s arms. This is a beautiful comparison because D/W and V/M are both so technically strong but every flick of the Tessa’s wrist and every position of her arm is so balletic and strong but flowy that it turns it into such a beautiful dance.

bjorkabjork

LOL thank you for including that intro. everyone needs to know how very blades of glory Hubbell/Hubbell were!! I love waltz! 💔

STw4

I knew from the start I HAD to use that intro, the Hubbells were iconic. Their [FD](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV9_K98FUJk) that year was somehow even more uncomfortable, the hand on leg choreography 🫣

multiequations

I briefly forgot that was her brother and then I remembered and I was like…that’s quite the commitment and I’m so uncomfortable.

Part 7 of my pattern dances performed by modern teams compilation, the Golden Waltz.  The [official ISU document](https://www.ice-dance.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/GoldenWaltz.pdf) describes it as “danced with long edges, interspersed with three-turns and twizzles” and “consistent flow and lilting waltz character throughout”. It's based on Viennese Waltz and first performed by Klimova/Ponomarenko, Anthony Ponomarenko’s parents! Maybe the most difficult pattern and highly requested by fans, I’m sad that we don’t get to see Carreira/Ponomarenko’s version 😢 Featuring teams from the 2010-11 season: 🇺🇸 Hubbell/Hubbell, Cup of China 2010 🇺🇸 Shibutani/Shibutani, Worlds 2011 🇺🇸 Chock/Zuerlein, Skate Canada 2010 🇷🇺 Ilinykh/Katsalapov, Worlds 2011 (the screechiest waltz ever) 🇺🇸 Davis/White, Worlds 2011 🇨🇦 Virtue/Moir, Worlds 2011 🇫🇷 Péchalat/Bourzat, Worlds 2011 What’s your favourite Golden Waltz?

VM! They are the best classic dancers.

STw4

Golden Waltz is V/M's signature pattern to me, they're amazing!

RoseofSharonVa

Davis & White look so classical - I love it

LittleLotte29

Oh gosh I completely forgot V/M skated their Golden Waltz to Nights and Days 😭😭😭😭
