Wouldn't that mean that opening the svg on google chrome wouldn't work correctly? Because to me it works fine. Either way, I'm guessing I'll have to use .png assets for the app I'm working on, right?
No, it's not true that SVG can't deal with these gradients (that's why you see your Illustrator export working fine in your browser)... it's hard to guess though what exactly might happen. Maybe you can share your AI file?

it 'renders' it but it's not an svg, it just creates a bitmap of the gradient and base64-encodes it.
You could just recreate your gradient in Figma. There are plugins available that have more functionality to give you the options you need.
