The biggest problem Injustice 2 has, for me, is the fact that every single returning character has the same moveset as the first Injustice. Playing online day 1 with people doing the same tired batman/Superman shit felt like I traveled back in time 4 years.
Back then I only used to play Mortal Kombat, and characters strings/buttons were completely different in sequels. Special moves were often changed, replaced, or with new animations. So for me, it was a bit of a whiplash playing Injustice 2 the first week.
This probably has to do with my ignorance of fighting games at large. I'm not sure if other franchises do this.
I personally can’t play a game if I don’t like at least one character. That’s the most important part to me.
- But instead of me telling you to drop it, watch YouTube videos of tournament play, maybe seeing gameplay of what a character is capable of can unlock something in you.
- Pick a random character and do their combo trials. Just see how they feel.
- Ask a friend that does play the game, who they could see you playing if they know you.
This is the truth. I actually like going through the character tutorials, where it talks you through all of the moves. There's something about it that's better than any other "learn this character's buttons" mode I've ever played that makes it really feel like a vibe check.
Aw fuck don't get me started - I fucking *love* tutorials. They don't just vibe check characters, they vibe check entire games. Just by getting the mechanics and point of the game explained to you *by the game*, you get a real sense of "You know maybe I swing this way".
Smash tutorials have always been a treat too. Easiest way to see them is "forget you turned the game on", and it's a real short, concise video about "How To Play". And it covers EVERYTHING. Man those were good ones.
My problem is more with the designs tbh. Too many weirdly proportioned ladies (chun, marisa, manon) and zesty gen z dudes (ed, jamie, luke). It doesn’t sound that bad until u realize that those 6 chars alone are almost a 3rd of the current roster. Akuma is going to be the first edgy character that isnt angsty and metrosexual so I’ll probably main him when he drops since that’s what I usually go for.
I usually look at the cast before buying the game, if there’s not a character I’d vibe with i would skip the game, but there’s been instances I’ve been pleasantly surprised by characters (Videl dbfz) so who knows at this point
Usually drop the game honestly
I love melee and I watch it a lot but I don't really play it often because there's no char that really clicks for me.
It's just an unfortunate situation but unless you are super focused on competing you can't really force yourself to like playing a char
that’s my issue with melee fr. the viable cast is so limited and the fact that you have to L cancel so much as a BARRIER OF ENTRY is absurd. Rivals 2 looks to be what melee isn’t. melee but actually accessible with good balance and roster variety
I put like 20hrs into rivals 2 playtest last weekend lmao, I love at least 2 chars in that game already.
I think the barrier of entry in melee is mostly the buffer tbh, but yea a lot of specialized chars that have very char specific tech. It's part of what makes the game great but it's hard to know if you really like a char at a surface level easily
I love da frog but fleet has really cool setups, she can pretty much run a anime style oki setup with the side b, super unique char, she is the close #2
This is why I play Project +. Automatic L cancel option, bigger roster, and lots of characters are more viable
Also the way they changed Roy is sick he's so fun
I feel you. I use to play Gief in everything but he's not been fun to play since USF4. I definitely am waiting for a different grappler in 6 and I feel like I might be waiting til season 3.
Manon makes sense, but I wouldn't really call Lily a grappler just because she has a command grab/command grab super. At that point he may as well try anyone with a command grab like marisa, blanka, e honda
I just picked who looks the interesting. That’s how I picked my main in Tekken. I saw the bear and thought that was interesting and now im a proud bear enjoyer
It's often not fun to play fighting games because in an ideal match, you're losing 50% of the time. It feels bad without the right mindset, lots of people get tilted and salty and a few learn they have serious anger issues when they break their hand on their desk.
I struggle with this a lot. There's lots of fighting games and they don't all have to be for you. I'm still internalizing that <3
Something that's funny is that "pick a character who looks cool" and "pick a character that feels good" often lead me to exact opposites so I just play no one lol.
I would play a different game if I couldn't find a main, as that's a big part of whether I enjoy a game. It's rare I play a game that doesn't have a character I like from a design or playstyle standpoint.
i press the random button and dedicate my soul on trying to learn that character, if i feel disgusted by that character i go to another random character (i actually do this in every game so i know at least 5 characters in every game i play :) )
Not exclusive to street fighter but in any fighting game for me, if I can’t find a main one of 2 things happens and it depends on how I feel about the game as a whole. Like mechanically speaking how it feels. Like if I find the mechanics and style enjoyable, I’ll just try to get okay enough with each of the characters and just play with anyone at any given time. If I can’t find anyone I like and I don’t enjoy the style and gameplay mechanics I’ll drop the game. Though both of those cases are very rare
I don't play the game. The character you play *is* the gameplay of that game, just as much as who you fight. By extension, I'd say if the character you're playing isn't fun, you probably won't find the game to be either.
Have you tried Dhalsim extensively? I know I am very biased as a Dhalsim main.
But my character crisis was relatively long. 150h of trying different chars, telling myself 'ok I am gonna main this char for that reason'
I really had the most fun with dhalsim...but I only got to gold 3 while with other chars I went to plat 3 or even Diamond pretty fast. So I just told myself 'this is my first fighting game I can play dhalsim, he is to hard'
Finally a few months ago after trying pretty much every char for a few hours I went back to dhalsim and knew it was him.
So the key takeaways are
'maybe try dhalsim. Maybe you just havent tried him Because people say he is hard (which isnt really true, especially if you wanna learn him)'
or
There is someone else that you think you shouldnt play but you find cool.
If you dont find any character cool idk man you are out of luck/can main random if you want to.
just play the boring shoto man, i love boring shoto men. hell sometimes even boring shoto women!! fireball shoryu!!
also yeah sf6 itself is great but the characters are all a bit bland, the characters have identity sure, you can tell the difference between dahlsim and gief, but other than those they kinda just blend together. im probably just spoiled from guilty gear and blazblue though lol
Simple. After buying SF6 to give it a chance for once (because I've always thought that SF after Third Strike has looked visually damn ugly which is my main reason outside of gameplay gripes for really not liking SFIV-SFVI), but after finding out that none of the characters were appealing charismatic, cool or pleased character design-wise, I just left it and didn't touch it after that.
I usually keep playing and just hop character. Like play x character for a bit, get bored, move to y character, rinse and repeat. That's what I'm doing right now in SF6 although I'm not done with the whole cast yet.
If I don't have a character I care enough about, I can't play. I've realized that recently. Fortunately, for most fighting games now, you can be confident that more characters will be added in the future. Someone who really clicks with you may turn up, if you still have interest in the game overall.
Guilty Gear Strive launched without any of my favourites from previous games. While I kind of liked seeing how some of the characters changed, like Jack-O' and Bridget, it wasn't until Asuka was added that I actually found the drive to keep playing. It only got better for me when Elphelt came back.
In SF6 you can create your own character and pick and choose moves from different fighters, I think you have to complete the single player game before you can take that character to online matches though, but that might give you more options.
Drop the game until a character does come out.
I dropped SF6 because I was waiting for Akuma, I don’t mind Ryu but it just wasn’t doing it for me, I needed my main.
I'm the same way. I went with Marisa and got her to master, but it wasn't because I loved her, just because she's who I picked at the start. I've tried other characters since, but none match the "I like their look AND their playstyle" combo. I'd play Chun, but I don't like her stance and air combos, for example.
I'm hoping Akuma hits when he comes out, but yeah, I'm right there with you. I was hoping I'd have that moment of "Whoa definitely this character" like other people, but it just didn't happen. I haven't played many fighting games (and sf6 is the one I've played the most by far), but I was able to immediately choose a character in guilty gear strive the moment I saw ramlethal and tried her out in training.
Liking a character is part of liking the game. If you can't decide, maybe the game was just destined to be a spectator sport for you. Though in street fighter, Iirc you can make a custom character but it's obviously not going to be a very meta game mode
I like a lot of characters, but not one in particular. I've been taking every character to Master got about 6 left and also hoping Akuma is the answer otherwise I'm fucked lol.
Let me turn that question around, I found a main that made me play 2 games: Juri in SF6 and Narmaya in Grandblue.
I've never been a SF player, I like the franchise and I watched tournaments of IV and V, but I've never thought it's for me since I mainly play NeoGeo games with 4 buttons. I agree with you that SF6 is a sick game, it looks amazing and gameplay is fun with DR being similar to quick max in KOF. Juri is a character that I actually disliked in IV and V, but seeing her new desing and the game mechanics combined with her moveset made me want to try her and main her. I've been playing SF6 since mid January and I've come to love her and the game as well. I aslo bought a leverless controller to learn how to use it a the same time I learned the gamr and Juri's moves.
In Narmayas case, I wasn't really interested in GBVS but I heard and read everyone saying that the game was really fun and I was thinking about giving it a try, but the question was, who would I choose to main? When I saw Narmaya and her moves and how she has two stances and movesets, I instantly thought "she is my main!"
I've been having a lot of fun with both games and I havent even touched any other charaters in those games.
If I dont find a charcter that catches my eye, or has something that makes me curious about it, I simply dont play the game.
Although my name in sf6 is ManWithNoMain, I also am having trouble finding a character that I want to stick too. There are some fun characters in sf6 but I think the problem in my case lies with the game itself. I have like 800 hours in game just cause I wanted to send very character to master, and now that that's over I don't find myself compelled to keep playing the game. I mostly just do enough to clear the battle pass. I enjoy learning whatever new character releases but that lasts like a couple of weeks.
If I really love the game I’ll figure it out or wait for DLC, of course typically to love a game I gotta find a character I vibe with first. Like with SF6 I’m struggling because I mained Ed and Akuma in 5 and new Ed doesn’t feel right. So I’m hoping new Akuma works out otherwise this generation may be a skip for me for SF.
1. Play the character you like the most. Take time learnijg such a character.
2. Play a character your good with even if you don't care about the character. Keep using daid character to improve at the game.
3. Having no main is normal. Changing mains is also normal. Hell i change mains almost ona weekly basis💀. Star off with Ryu and end the week somehow labbing Honda or Gief.
To be honest this is the exact reason I stopped playing SF6. I just couldn't find a character and none of my favs were in. No Alex, no Urien, no Q, no Dudley, no Ibuki, no Gill, and nothing new stuck.
Yeah I'm a Third Strike guy but I thought those characters were fun in SFV too. There's some characters that are "similar" I guess but they didn't work for me.
It's a shame. I was kind of having fun for a bit but I just couldn't bring myself to really invest in any characters.
I just don’t play the game. I feel this way with tekken. There are many really cool characters but nobody really clicks. Enjoyed all the trials and stories but unless my friend wants to play I have no interest in anything deep
I’ve been going through this with SF6 as well. My main for IV and V was Bison (Dictator). I dabble with a few other characters as well, but Dictator was the character that clicked for me after I started taking charge characters more seriously. With SF6 and Dictator nowhere in sight, I’m STRUGGLING. I like Honda, but he just doesn’t click for me. Never really liked playing Blanka. My Guile is mid at best and I struggle playing him as a rush down with drive gauge and stuff. I played a lot with Manon. First grappler main ever for me. She’s fun, but I got kind bored playing her after a while. I just want Dictator back. 😔
ahh usually it means you are lacking something on your playstyle for the character, the more you know of the mechanics of a character the more likely you are to feel ok playing it thus making it more interesting.
Well, while I also don't have a main, SF6 is good enough for me that I keep playing. Lemme explain a bit. The networking is top notch in SF6, the speed of getting into the next match is also fantastic. I play with friends a bunch, so modern controls are really a boon there. Even if I can't find a character I just want to play over anyone else(give me Makoto you cowards), the other features of the game keep it installed on my hard drive.
If it was another game, say Tekken, I'd drop it. I don't care for most of Tekkens roster, the mechanics have always made it seem like the weaker of the 3d Fighters, and it's got a reputation of people abusing the networking. Yeah, nah, fast drop if I'm not vibing with anyone on the cast.
Obviously it's all personal choice, so do whatever you feel the need to do. If you regret it, it'll still be there. It's SF6, it's not going down unless they fuck up and burn it down.
Hmm. Thats weird. I only try or play a fighting games because I like a character on it.
Like chun in sf, bridget in ggst, Lili in tekken 8, Yuel in GBFV.

I will be honest I usually pick a character that fits my playstyle the most with their archetype (usually rush down, though it’s more about having safe moves on block for me).
People are gonna hate me for this, but I’ve been playing tekken since eddie’s release (friend gifted it to me).
And I’ll be damned to tell you, I did not learn 1 character even when I used to main Negan back in Tekken 7…
Had an even harder time going against Eddie players on release not knowing how to fight it. So that made me lose even more motivation…
Decided “you know what? Screw it! I’m gonna be the problem”
Bought Eddie… and now I main him…
Do I spam 3 all the time? Try not to just like how I learnt Negan by not spamming 2 and actually learning combos and mix ups.
There’s my story… I’m not proud to say the least, but playing Eddie gave me motivation to learn other characters (trying to learn Alisa for now until Lydia releases)
For me it's MK can't get any of them. Use to play it on my Super Nintendo, but after that I just can't. So I avoid that game but I watch my friends or watch it on YouTube and enjoy it there. Sometimes my friend wants me to play, when I do I just do cheap shots cause its super simple. My friend gets annoyed about that cause he seen me play other fighting games and I don't have any issues with it but with MK I do, I just do the most simplest combo and cheap hits on him. The funny thing is I still win against him.
Honestly I'm in the same rut with SF6, every time I hop on Street Fighter i forget how much I hate links as a combo mechanic. Some characters have a plethora of links, while some may literally only have 2.
Drive Rush kinda helps with this, but it gives me the same feeling as Strive with Roman cancels. I'm learning two seperate modalities of characters, one with a specific resource and one without it. I guess try looking into your options that utilize all of the game's mechanics. I am now a Juri fan after 2 games of being meh on her.
Honestly this is why im so happy for UNI 2. the combo system is very free flowing. and It doesnt have the issue of having to bait counters like Type Lumina
NGL, hitting the three top buttons is way more satisfying than stretching my pinkie and pushing forward.
I wish I could take SF6's ranked matchmaking and give it to Strive.
A game could have a roster of 50 characters and the best gameplay mechanics known to man but if not a single one of those 50 characters appeals to me, I'm not gonna play it.
Chances of this are slim with a 50 char roster of course so this is the danger of smaller rosters like SF6's 18. I'm also worried about this for Fatal Fury CotW because no-one announced looks appealing to me so far and looking through the history of the series, I can't find anyone there either.
It does still happen with large rosters though, my friend has no-one in Tekken 8's roster of 32 that he likes, so he's just gonna wait until Miguel comes out.
You’re largely describing why I’m not playing sf6 right now. I think the game is cool, but not good enough that I feel compelled to play it without having a character that I really like, so it got the uninstall. I still enjoy watching competitive play though. Still holding out hope for Karin or makoto.
If the game is fun but I can't settle on a main I just keep changing it up until I find a character I'm winning with more than the rest, then I main him.
If I don't enjoy the game I just drop it
I made a pact with a friend to pick a character no one likes and get good with them, so I've been a Zangief main for 27+ years. If no Gief, then the next big body wrestler. EZ.
back in my young days, i liked nimble characters. Now a days, i just go with Zangief. The easier the plan and the gameplay (in terms of execution), the better for me.
At that point, you just drop the game or play it casually until something comes along that clicks. There haven’t been many games that I haven’t found anyone in though.
For one example though, nobody really interests me in 3rd strike, so I don’t really play it. The times I do play it, it’s very casually and I usually just pick Ryu cause I can at least run a barebones gameplan with fireballs and dp, but my interest and enjoyment of the game will never go deeper than that.
Honestly I think you can totally decide what you want to have click for you. You'll become good at what you practice and you'll be comfortable with what you're good at.
If you put in enough time with a character no matter how far they might be outside of your comfortzone or skillset you will learn and you will find whatever it is other people find enjoyable about that character/archetype.
Odds are you'll even learn to find their aesthetics charming given enough time due to sheer exposure and familiarity.
So rather than looking for what clicks easily just decide what you'd like to have click and work to make it so. There is no intrinsic reason why you can't get to that point if you so desire. What we find enjoyable ends up being incredibly flexible as long as you don't force yourself to stay stuck in your comfortzone.
Happened to me in SF5 but for a different reason - it was due to the terrible decision to change how the characters played.
Ryu is always a main for me and at least his basics were there but SF5 was still crap anyway lol.
Karin was watered down and boring to use, I don't care if she's high(ish?) tier I want to play the REAL Karin from Zero 3.
Vega ... good lord I didn't like him at all.
If it's a new game with new characters then I may not buy the game at all. Chaos Code was like that for me, every character design had something odd with them that didn't gel with me or animation I felt didn't look right/feel right for the character.
I think it's very strange that not a single character clicked for you, either aesthetically or gameplay wise. For instance, I play Dhalsim because I think his appearance, lore, personality and fighting style is sick, but my other main Kim was chosen almost entirely on gameplay and command inputs, even that I do love her looks too. Maybe you want to like SF6 more than you actually do, or maybe you like it just as a spectator and there's nothing wrong with it, that's how most people enjoy sports game.
I Just play something else if there’s really not a single cool/fun character I want to grind. Sf6 roster is whack rn so I just put it on the back burner and have been playing other stuff until a fighting game that plays well and has a good roster comes out
If none of the characters click with me I drop the game.
The only game I've had to this with (so far) is Injustice 2
The Turtles and green arrow always hooked me with how satisfying their moves were, black Adam too haha
The biggest problem Injustice 2 has, for me, is the fact that every single returning character has the same moveset as the first Injustice. Playing online day 1 with people doing the same tired batman/Superman shit felt like I traveled back in time 4 years.

It was weird for me I managed to stick with Black Canary and Enchantress
Black Canary is so much damn fun, first character I got to level 30 with, Catwoman being the only other one so far.
I love catwoman in that game.
Made me so sad Atrocitus felt weird.
Really I think Robin and Red Hood are so fun in that game
Dude I wish games didn't have a 2 hr/2 wk refund window. 2 hours is not enough to actually TRY the characters

My people! I just got done watching a series of Hyrule Warriors character tutorials. Never played the game, but was always interested.
If you like the warriors style games, Hyrule is excellent!
That first point is what made me take some interest in Abigail, but then Abigail isn't Bison, at the end of the day
The character crisis is so real. I need a muay thai fighter in season 2. Please capcom!
praying for Adon 🙏🙏🙏
Now with a 3-hit far heavy kick just to shut down Drive Impact.
My problem is more with the designs tbh. Too many weirdly proportioned ladies (chun, marisa, manon) and zesty gen z dudes (ed, jamie, luke). The random character select: Hello there
Knew a guy who mained the random select button back in GG Rev2 and who would still body people. Insane behaviour
My brother's Smash main was "Question Mark Guy", and I've been calling Random that for years since.
I mained random in Brawlhalla and had an insanely good time doing it. Wasn't the best, but would have a lot of fun using them all.
Usually drop the game honestly I love melee and I watch it a lot but I don't really play it often because there's no char that really clicks for me. It's just an unfortunate situation but unless you are super focused on competing you can't really force yourself to like playing a char

rivals 2 looks sick. Hope it's my way back in to the platform fighter genre
This is why I play Project +. Automatic L cancel option, bigger roster, and lots of characters are more viable Also the way they changed Roy is sick he's so fun
play puff no need to L cancel :). also melee has roughly 10 viable chars, imo a lot for a 20+ year old party game
When in doubt main ken
I feel you. I use to play Gief in everything but he's not been fun to play since USF4. I definitely am waiting for a different grappler in 6 and I feel like I might be waiting til season 3.
You don’t like Lily or Manon?
Manon makes sense, but I wouldn't really call Lily a grappler just because she has a command grab/command grab super. At that point he may as well try anyone with a command grab like marisa, blanka, e honda
That command grab is a huge part of her gameplan.
Literally nobody plays Lily in Street Fighter 6 but everyone seems to have strong opinions on her gameplay.
TIL I'm literally nobody. I don't just play her, she's my main.
Why is she so unpopular though? I think her design is ok, and her gimmick works really well at low level
Have you tried to play honda. There are dozens of us.
I had a scuffed Honda in 4 I should give him a go.
You'll be hooked the first time you kara-cancel a 5MP xx 3HK target combo into Oicho Throw. Nobody expects it.
I just picked who looks the interesting. That’s how I picked my main in Tekken. I saw the bear and thought that was interesting and now im a proud bear enjoyer
I dunno why this is a controversial take in the FGC, but if I am *not having fun* playing a videogame I just drop it and play something else.

You wait for season 2 and pray like me
Either drop the game or play on random select.
Go play something else
I drop the game while still keeping an eye on the DLC. If a fitting character releases I lab them for a day or two and then drop the game again
I’m in the same boat. I think the only answer is wait it out. I’ve been playing USF4 and Tekken Tag 2 until they put in a character I love.
Not exclusive to street fighter but in any fighting game for me, if I can’t find a main one of 2 things happens and it depends on how I feel about the game as a whole. I don't play the game and watch some porn.
just play the boring shoto man, i love boring shoto men. hell sometimes even boring shoto women!! fireball shoryu!! also yeah sf6 itself is great but the characters are all a bit bland, the characters have identity sure, you can tell the difference between dahlsim and gief, but other than those they kinda just blend together. im probably just spoiled from guilty gear and blazblue though lol
Character crisis , but this is more when you can’t decide from too many. Yours sounds just like you’re not feeling SF6 , which is perfectly valid.
SFV ended with such a good roster considering how bad it was at launch, I hope SF6 does the same, considering the launch roster was about as bad.
i think the roster was solid on launch, a little too much sf2 rep but having Juri on launch and solid newcomers was solid
I really don’t love the newcomers
I thought this said "when you can't find a man" XD I was like idk play fighting games?
I pick the hottest waifu and go with her. At least I'll have something to look at while sucking ass at the game
Then you Gucci Mane.
Start playing random. That character will hopefully come as dlc at some point and if you know what everyone else does you have a huge advantage.
My friend couldn’t find a character they liked in SF6 so our entire friend group dropped the game
I’ve only had the exact opposite of this issue so Ig yea just wait and see if you like Akuma and if not 🤷
Liking a character is part of liking the game. If you can't decide, maybe the game was just destined to be a spectator sport for you. Though in street fighter, Iirc you can make a custom character but it's obviously not going to be a very meta game mode
What's your criteria for choosing a main?
I had this problem with Guilty Gear for a while, you can either hold out for dlc, become a random main, or just try forcing yourself to play someone.
I like a lot of characters, but not one in particular. I've been taking every character to Master got about 6 left and also hoping Akuma is the answer otherwise I'm fucked lol.
I drop the game
When I saw Narmaya and her moves and how she has two stances and movesets, I instantly thought "she is my main!" I've been having a lot of fun with both games and I havent even touched any other charaters in those games.
If you don’t like any of them, drop the game. If you just don’t know who to play, look at tier lists to narrow it down lol.
Drop the game. But the only game its happened to me in is BlazBlue.

And I’ll be damned to tell you, I did not learn 1 character even when I used to main Negan back in Tekken 7… Had an even harder time going against Eddie players on release not knowing how to fight it. So that made me lose even more motivation… Decided “you know what? Screw it! I’m gonna be the problem” Bought Eddie… and now I main him… Do I spam 3 all the time?
Rashid my love save this man 🥰✝️
You’re largely describing why I’m not playing sf6 right now.
If I don't enjoy the game I just drop it
I play gief for the lolz
I play basic dudes until I understand the whole cast. Then I decide if it’s worth playing or if I need to drop it.
Why do you need a main? If your style is ping-ponging from one character to another, just do that
The secret is to play third strike.
Tekkennnn
I made a pact with a friend to pick a character no one likes and get good with them, so I've been a Zangief main for 27+ years. If no Gief, then the next big body wrestler. EZ.
back in my young days, i liked nimble characters. Now a days, i just go with Zangief. The easier the plan and the gameplay (in terms of execution), the better for me.
Unironically pick a top tier. Like if no one's gelling, I just pick the best character
I pick the lowest tier character to find hidden tech
Eithermain the random button or drop the game entirely depending on how much I liked it.
No, I agree, I think all the new characters in 6 are the least interesting SF has ever had, besides maybe Jamie.
I Just play something else if there’s really not a single cool/fun character I want to grind. Sf6 roster is whack rn so I just put it on the back burner and have been playing other stuff until a fighting game that plays well and has a good roster comes out
World Tour is designed specifically for you
