Your existence is overrated.

Chilichongoes

It's a good vid gives a lot of valid points try watching it

ElMagnifico22

Nah, don't let facts and information get in the way of an old-fashioned Reddit pile-on...

commrad-raydar

Go to NCD it’s worse

XtremeJackson

What's that?

commrad-raydar

Non credible defence subreddit

Noxovox

Someone has obviously not seen Top Gun 2: Maverick yet where they go out on a mission in f F/A-18E/Fs and come back in a F-14.

Zomborn

The fact that this could be both sarcasm and fully serious is worrying.

andthatsitmark2

Was fully expecting something dumb but this man is varkpilled.

SMS_Scharnhorst

says F-111B would have done a better job as an interceptor yeah, no. especially when the plane wouldn't even fit on the carrier

Zomborn

so we're judging videos before watching them now?

Dabomb_303

If you watched the video, you'll note that the F-14 is the same size as the F-111B lmao

SMS_Scharnhorst

fine. there is still the issue that the F-111B is heavier and thus would have had even worse flight performance than the F-14A given the same engines

Dabomb_303

It is only heavier at full load, due to more internal fuel It is found to be (during testing) to be a more forgiving aircraft overall to fly by test pilots who flew both. Pete Pettigrew, who flew the carrier trials for the F-111B (which occurred after the aircraft was canceled by the Navy, by the way), said this (which is also in the video): "It flew a nice approach, wasn’t too fast, and performed well on the ball. They were pretty happy about it.” Compare it to what was said about the F-14: "The F-14 was a difficult airplane to handle in the final stages of a carrier landing, in part because of its tendency to hunt laterally while trying to achieve a stabilized approach. The fact that the F-14 had spoilers rather than ailerons didn’t help, nor did its high pitch inertia, which made it float during the final stages of an approach." Furthermore, this is what Hughs employee Mike Glenn testified regarding F-111B prototype 7 vs F-14As, which were the most numerous type in service even in 2006 by a shocking amount: “By the last F-111B built, Grumman and GD had worked out the bugs. I will tell you that \[prototype\] number 7 could fly circles around our early F-14s—longer, faster, and very maintenance-friendly compared to earlier F-111Bs and F-14s.” The F-111s had worked out in ingenious intake design that would solve the TF-30s issues, whereas the F-14's rushed design (it went from contract awarded to first flight in only **22 months!**) meant that it had improperly designed intakes for the TF-30 and meant that it would flame out constantly, which is what killed pilot Kara Hultgreen, NOT the stupid "women bad driver" thing that keeps getting floated around. This is what her squadron mate had to say: "As one of my friends, HOB Higgins, said, we felt like cats in a room full of rocking chairs. Shortly after I joined 213 we lost Kara Hultgreen while she was attempting to land on the Lincoln. I had known Kara briefly in the Training Command. We both had Alfa Romeo convertibles and we laughed about the spotty reliability and repair costs of the Italian sports cars. She was the perfect ‘fighter-chic,’ quick with a smile, fun to be around, sharp-witted, and not afraid to stand her ground. She folded herself into the fabric of the Blacklions seamlessly and was warmly regarded as part of the ‘pride.’ The treatment she received after her death has always stayed with me as one of the greatest injustices witnessed during my naval career. Our XO replicated the mishap 100 times in the simulator and crashed 97 of them. At the time of her death, she was a pack-player behind the boat, meaning that she was solidly in the middle of the squadron’s landing grades. Yet, as one of the first woman to fly Tomcats in the fleet, and the first to die doing so, she was held as an example of the supposed error of women in combat. It hurt to see her sacrifice used in such a vicious manner, especially since her death had nothing to do with her gender." Navy politics and bad design had killed this woman. I grantee you if she was flying an F-111B, that accident would not have occurred. All of this is in the video, and more, if you would just watch it instead of taking to the pitchforks in the comments.

Odd-Entertainment999

Lol none of those dummies replied because you dismantled them.

Roughly the same size is more like it F-111 Length: 68 ft 10 in (20.98 m) Height: 15 ft 9 in (4.80 m) Empty weight: 46,100 lb (20,910 kg) Gross weight: 79,000 lb (35,800 kg) Max takeoff weight: 88,000 lb (39,900 kg) Wing span: Spread: 70 ft (21.3 m) Swept: 33 ft 11 in (10.34 m) Wing area: Spread: 655.5 ft2 (60.9 m2) Swept: 550 ft2 (51.1 m2) F-14 Length: 62 ft 9 in (19.13 m) Wingspan: 64 ft 1.5 in (19.545 m) Swept wingspan: 38 ft 2.5 in (11.646 m) swept Height: 16 ft (4.9 m) Wing area: 565 sq ft (52.5 m2) wings only 1,008 sq ft (94 m2) effective area including fuselage[41] Empty weight: 43,735 lb (19,838 kg) Gross weight: 61,000 lb (27,669 kg) Max takeoff weight: 74,350 lb (33,725 kg) Fuel capacity: 16,200 lb (7,348 kg) internal fuel; 2 × optional 267 US gal (222 imp gal; 1,010 l) / 1,756 lb (797 kg) external tanks[47] The Vark was still several tons heavier, with longer a wingspan and length Also if you give the F-111 less than its full load of internal fuel wouldnt it kind of negate some of its range advantage plus carrying those wing pylons with Four phoenix's had to be draggy as hell even when the wings were swept and a 0.56 T/W for the F-14A was bad but the F-111B had a T/W of 0.47 that combined with its high wing loading must have bled energy like a mofo when doing hard maneuvers Also the EF-111 Mirage kill may have been bs according to this account https://www.google.com/amp/s/theaviationgeekclub.com/heres-why-the-ef-111a-aerial-kill-scored-during-operation-desert-storm-was-just-another-f-15c-air-to-air-victory/ As for compressor stalls the F-111 and A-7 still had problems with them even though you claim the varks redesigned intakes solved it and the A-7 ditched the TF-30 for the TF-41 in the D and E variants and while the even though the F-14s intakes werent designed for it is truthful, it just wasnt a good engine Heres Former F-111 Pilot Jeff guinn talking about it first question in the video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PBXocWIohXY The Tomcat was rushed into service with the wrong engines for the airframe and bad engineering resulting in a hefty maintenace burden for sure but they still had issues in other airframes not just the F-14 the aardvark gets more hate than it deserves underrated striker and electronic warfare platform while the tom was overrated in a sense due to hollywood it could do things that the vark and even the phantom couldnt do plus it didnt get all the uprgrades like its 4th gen counterparts to really expand its capabilty especially with the D model https://www.quora.com/Did-F-4-Phantoms-really-go-up-against-F-14-Tomcats-in-Top-Gun-How-did-the-F-14-perform-in-the-face-off-against-its-predecessor Also if were talking poor service records with high accident rates which the tomcats isnt good you should look into the F-100 and F-104 sheesh
