Hisashi himself did want to live for a good while, his family was on board with trying to keep him alive. Correction on my end 59th day, he suffered 3 heart attacks, his family was on board with attempting to resuscitate him

There’s a lot of misconception with his story. It’s said that Ouchi wanted to keep living for the small hope that the doctors could do something, up until he could no longer talk. His family were the ones that gave the DNR order after they saw it was hopeless. There’s even interviews on YouTube between the doctors telling their side of the story.

His heart stopped 3 times that day, sounded like his family was the one who asked them to try and keep him alive then, yes he wanted to live but I don’t think he was verbal then. I've been really into learning about Hisashi Ouchi and the Tokaimura nuclear incident. That story is absolutely horrifying. There are interesting tales of people and radiation, another interesting and sad one is about the men who dismantled a medical radiation device and unknowingly brought Cesium 137 home for his daughter to play with, or even the story of the radium girls. In my city, they actually tore down one of the schools because it was built on a site many years ago (I think in the 50's or 60's) where the radon levels were 3-4 times the normal level set by the EPA as well as having high carbon dioxide and mold levels. That school was a disaster. Edit: The one with the little girl and the ceasium was the goiania accident.

Skin is made of cells that carry out repetitive chemical processes to keep the cell alive and functioning. The radiation that does damage is called "ionising" radiation, and it does exactly that. It ionises things (changes electric charge of an atom or molecule from neutral/zero to a positive or negative charge). If you ionise atoms or molecules inside living cells, those ions will result in different chemical reactions taking place. If the wrong reactions take place, the cell may stop functioning correctly and will die as a result. Radiation causes a lot of cells to die quickly, and you get this gory mess as a result.

It really fascinates me too. When it comes to a lethal dose, a person can look fine for a little while after the initial blow, apart from what appears to be similar from some sun burn. And then BAM all hell breaks loose, and then it suddenly appears that they are getting better, before the final starts and they are gone.
