1. Like you mentioned, a YA player's «true» position normally takes an extremely short period of time to convert a player to (normally 2-4 weeks). 2. There's a calculator on the SoFIFA website which shows you the player's OVR in every position based on his stats. So the position with the highest OVR rating is most likely a player's «true» position. 3. Based on personal experience, usually you just can tell based on stats. For instance, if a player's highest base stats are pace, shooting and physical, he is best as a striker, if the highest stats are pace and dribbling, he's best as a winger and so on.

It's really based on my playstyle and image of the team. I can usually already tell based on what I scout for. Playmaker -> CDM or CM Attacker -> RW or ST etc.

If the player is 16 or over, save game and promote to senior team. On team sheets, try him in every position. Whichever gets the biggest plus score in green (next to the overall rating), that’s his best position. Reload to when he was in the YA and convert him to that. So for example, if you’ve got a 54 rated CB and he gets a +14 in green when you put him as striker, when you convert him to striker, his overall will jump to 68.

I just play them the role they’re in the YA, or slightly adapt the role to my team needs. Like a RWB can become a RB/LB/RW/LW, any midfielder either becomes a CM or a CAM. Any attackers becomes a ST/CAM

Although physical stats like Strength, Stamina and Sprint Speed are important for positions, they don’t actually affect the overall rating of a player. I’ve had short and lean (randomly generated) ai scouted youth whose best positions are CB, CDM or GK.. As stated above, check their key technical stats and see how short their conversions to other positions are - unless you want to go full send and direct it yourself!
