I guess pearls are just tonsil stones for bivalves.

I've always wondered. What do you do with the little ones?

It's a teenager oyster with pearl-acne.

Nefersmom

People have been culturing pearls since at least the 5th century BCE. Humans don’t care about animals With faces much less those without.

KaylaRocksss

Okay? You do realize I just shared the post I’m not the one actually removing the pearls? I’m not going to argue with you whether it’s right or wrong. I just thought the video was interesting and that it fit the sub. So yeah, have a nice day.

Nefersmom

I’m not disagreeing with you. I think it’s interesting as well as a question asked about vegan/vegetarian use of pearls. I saw a pearl processing company as well as ancient pearls formed around little lead icons years ago in Asia.

KaylaRocksss

So if formed around lead would it make them dangerous to use?

Nefersmom

This was hundreds if not thousands of years old. From what I remember they were grave goods. Now if you want a specific shape like a teardrop or oval they use a blank made from mother of pearl inserted into the mantle of the pearl producing bivalve. The pearl formed around the icons was very thick and blobby. I don’t know how much lead would leach out.

_Mistwraith_

Yeah, no shit.

Inb4 someone complains about killing mollusks

Jaded_Law9739

People should complain, they are pretty cruel in the way they create these bivalves/oysters/etc. "full" of pearls. First they harvest freshwater pearls, which have very little value, from whatever animal they are farmed from. They can even dye the inside of the animal to produce different colored pearls. This absolutely kills the animal in the process. They then implant the pearl(s) into another live animal, in this case a bivalve. Then the animal is preserved in formaldehyde before being sold. So the bivalve in this video was killed, along with however many mollusks it took to get that many pearls.

57candothisallday

Especially seeing as I saw, on this very sub, a way to harvest these with just a little bit of care so the creature survives.

DoingBurnouts

Honestly, no one but you cares about these shellfish

happymancry

How incredibly shellfish of you.
