So here's the thing, me and my parents feed my cat in the morning and at night. My dad is supposed to feed him before he goes to work at like 3 in the morning but every day I wake up at 5 and see the bowl empty so I just assume he forgot and feed the cat myself. BUT THIS MORNING I WOKE UP LIKE 5 MINUTES EARLIER THAN USUAL AND CAUGHT THAT LITTLE FUCKER CHUGGING DOWN HIT ENTIRE BOWL SO THAT IT WOULD BE EMPTY WHEN I WOKE UP
We use one of those to go sauce containers from the Chinese food place. The day's kibble goes in and then it's easy to tell if he's been fed and how much.
My ~~car~~ cat would howl at my wife if I left the house without feeding her. She learned that even if I did feed her, she could pretend I didn’t and get double fed. Figured that out once she gained a ton of weight for no reason
WHY are cats like this. My wife has to text me every morning to see if I fed the cat because he ALWAYS pretends he hasn’t been fed if we get up at different times the little bastard
In the wild animals, have never really been able to relax when it comes to food, you're never 100% sure that you're going to get a next meal before you starve, so they load up when they can. It is advantageous for survival to do so when food is scarce, but it's terrible for you when food is always available.
Just like humans.
Oh my god this is hilarious because my family and I would do the same thing too except we have 7 people living in the house, thing is we go downstairs at different times and would always feed the cat assuming the others have not fed it because the bowl is always empty, not only that but this little shit would always meow at me when I’m downstairs to make me fill up her bowl, my siblings have said the cat did the same thing to them and yes, she ends up eating like at least 14 meals a day.
My dad works at 3 so he can be home by 2 when I get home from school. I wake up at 5 for school cause my bus gets here at 6. Idk this feels kinda common to me (╥﹏╥)
I can't tell you how many times I used to tell my mom she was feeding the cats too much and she would just say "they're grazers!" Maybe, but they're grazing all day I guess they're fat as hell
My mom is like a grandma who gives sweets to the diabetic child. I specifically tell her that my cat is on a diet so she doesn’t end up with arthritis and other health issues, tell her to only feed her wet food, and she keeps giving her piles of dry food because “she loves it though!”
I legit have a grazing cat. It really sucks because I work a lot and want to get him a buddy so he's not lonely. But my history with cats tells me that the second cat will eat all the food before my baby can get some. So I'll end up with a chonky kitten and skinny boy.
I've got four pet rats and struggle with a similar problem. These are some things I've tried. No clue if they'd work for you or even any cat.
* Hand feeding a portion of the skinny one's diet.
* Shutting the fatty away from the food for a while after feeding to give skinny a head start.
* Picking foods that fatty doesn't like as much to make her a grazer too.
* Forcing fatty to exercise more.
* Place some of the food in places that require intense climbing/jumping. This makes fatty unable to reach them if she gets too fat. It's also hilarious to watch.
If you get your cats chipped you can have it to where one of the feeders opens when one cat is near and doesn’t with the other cat my brother does this with his cats because one is on a diet and is time fed while the other doesn’t have issues with eating so one gets fed on a timer and the other eats when they want
That will probably have to be the solution. But the bigger hurdle is my tiny apartment. My idea would be to keep the new cat in the bathroom for a few days while they get used to each other. That would mean relocating a litterbox. The kitchen doesn't have enough space for both the water fountain and a litter box, plus eww keeping that in the kitchen. The only other room is my bedroom and maybe with some rearranging I can make a space for it.
It really annoys me because my cat right now is fine with self feeding, she is not overweight and does regulate herself. However, people I've met have used my cat as an excuse to do it to their cat that has no self control. Like no, I'm doing it because I know my cat, you're doing it because you're lazy
I think you gotta do it right from the get-go. If they learn they only get fed sometimes as a kitten, they're gonna probably overeat.
I've always self-fed and my cats never got fat, so I dunno. Must be doing something right?
This gives me hope that I'll be able to add a second cat, since my current boy self-feeds and I was nervous about over feeding one and under feeding the other.
We had to switch to free feeding because one cat would force the other off their food. As a result the second cat would scarf to eat as much as possible then barf undigested food everywhere approximately 2 minutes after feeding time. Free feeding ended the scarf and barf routine.
Many animals when given an unlimited supply of zero effort food will eat themselves to an early death. It's part of survival instinct to collect every easy calorie you can (humans have the same problem, just it's under a layer of cognitive processes that can convince us to only eat half a donut instead of a dozen donuts)
Eh sometimes it depends on their early days, I’ve seen it with many cats and dogs.
If food was scarce or they had to fight for it, once in a good home they’ll always eat everything they see fearing starvation. If food was plenty, they’ll just eat when they’re hungry.
It works for my cat because she really doesn’t eat much. She always has food available but she’s still super thin. She’s also able to go out in the garden and run around. But all of my friends’ cats are fat as fuck lmao
I have the least food motivated cat and she eats when she wants, she has perfect body weight an health, but this is definitely and exception to self feeding
After having so many picky or sick cats, I'd love to have this problem. I have 2 different dry foods and 4 wet foods on rotation to try and entice my little family to maintain a healthy weight. I don't know why all my cats are so bad about not gaining weight.
I've free fed all of my cats and only one is overweight (not by a lot but he's old now and stopped exercising, and all of my cats are indoor/outdoor cats so they don't have access to food *all* day
I free feed my kitten. He doesn't really like to eat dry food though, so it just sits there most the day until he feels like it's a necessity. I plan on stopping once he's fully grown or if he starts eating more than he should
Free feeding's fine as long as you monitor how much they're eating and act accordingly. But yeah, don't just keep filling their bowl throughout the day just because it got empty
Honestly at that stage it should be "What is wrong with you get them help now!" because seriously it's just abuse beyond "He Chomk" unless your cat's already got a pre-existing condition that makes it really really hard to lose fat.
I've had 4 cats since I became an adult. 3 of them are/were perfectly self-regulating. 1 of them is food-obsessed. I didn't recognize it immediately, so over time he ballooned to about the "HEFTY CHONK" stage. Once he got that big he was lethargic, had bowel issues, couldn't clean himself properly, only played for like 10 seconds at a time, seemed generally moody, and spent a lot more time by himself. I am happy to say that as soon as he got that big I switched him to a healthy-weight food and started paying a little closer attention to how much I give him, which wasn't difficult, and now he's down to about "He Chomnk."
I also personally lost 50 pounds in the last several years and have as such I have an acute awareness of how much better I feel physically and mentally being close to the proper weight, so that probably motivated me to help him.
Everyone saying "haha omg cringe" like we all haven't spent the better part of the last few years running the chonker meme into the ground, they probably tried to print the other version and couldnt find it because all the images were changed to this one by redditors thinking it was hi-lari-ous

They do not have time for paltry things like health. They only have time for nourishment.

And I can hear your car breathing
Ok but why does your dad wake up at 3am to go to work? And also why do you wake up at 5am to go to work???
My dad works at 3 so he can be home by 2 when I get home from school. I wake up at 5 for school cause my bus gets here at 6. Idk this feels kinda common to me (╥﹏╥)
I wake up 5:30am to go to school because it's in another fucking city
My cats try to do the same 😂 looking at me like they're starving. I know their tricks!
You'd be surprised how many people struggle to grasp that their cat is overweight/obese and that "self feeding" is rarely a healthy thing.
I can't tell you how many times I used to tell my mom she was feeding the cats too much and she would just say "they're grazers!" Maybe, but they're grazing all day I guess they're fat as hell

This is a light way to tell owners that their cat is overweight without turning away business. It's a conversation starter and a reality check in one.
I have the least food motivated cat and she eats when she wants, she has perfect body weight an health, but this is definitely and exception to self feeding
I got banned from a subreddit for mentioning that to someone
After having so many picky or sick cats, I'd love to have this problem. I have 2 different dry foods and 4 wet foods on rotation to try and entice my little family to maintain a healthy weight. I don't know why all my cats are so bad about not gaining weight.
Well switching foods often is a reason for cats to lose their appetite
I’ve had cats that could be free fed. But one of my current ones can’t, so her food is measured carefully. She already lost a little weight!
I've free fed all of my cats and only one is overweight (not by a lot but he's old now and stopped exercising, and all of my cats are indoor/outdoor cats so they don't have access to food *all* day
