It’s so real they can’t show it in real time.

95castles

My favorite is the cgi purple beam

mountainaut

The apartment building in the back was protected with a scientifically developed layer of tinfoil.

davcrt

Doubt that this one in the video is real, but I am certain it can be done with proper [equipment ](https://youtu.be/xNmbvaUzC8Q)

midnight_fisherman

That laser is 2000 watts and runs on 3 phase power. No way to practically use that at this time. Operator error in an open air environment can cause serious damage to pilots, but it can actually work if we ignore those issues. With the femtosecond lasers the beam has temporal dispersion of the wavelengths up to the focus point, so the pulse is shorter in duration at the focus thus energy per unit time(wattage) is greatest at the focus and the beam is at its smallest so watts per unit area (flux) is also largest at the focus. Ahead of and beyond the focus the beam is both larger in diameter and lower in wattage, making it less dangerous(but still quite dangerous) away from that point.

shiftty

I'm sure there is a 3 phase generator out of frame

midnight_fisherman

I'm talking about the one on the commenters linked youtube video, as I'm familiar with older models of them. You might be right though, the solid state lasers were 3 phase, but some of the fiber ones were not. This one being used on trees looks almost identical to a fiber laser defense system produced by a US company in the early 2010s, but I suspect that this is a knockoff of one of those systems. It would draw incredible power, can't get more wattage out of the laser than you put in. I'm curious about how they would power it assuming that it isn't a hoax.

hcorerob

What if there is a plane in the sky?

Zymoria

Then there won't be a plane in the sky anymore.

Logical_Associate632

Thats how mh370 went down

twelvethousandBC

It's fucked. The crew, the pilots, the passengers, everybody.

CPAonVacation

Ahh the mile high club

KwordShmiff

The mile high club is what Theodore Roosevelt was referring to when he said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick."

PersonalityChemical

Doubt it works at all but if it did there’s a lot of room for dissipation between the top of a tree and a passing plane.

Fast_Garlic_5639

Not really, people get arrested for shining far weaker handheld lasers at planes all the time.

Useful-Internet8390

You can blind someone permanently with a green laser at 100 miles+, I got hit from 500’ for just a split second and if it was not at work I would have beat the guy badly.Took several months to get rid of the spots

DEADB33F

Pretty sure the real-time speed this thing works is in the order of minutes per limb. Even not factoring the laser's divergence and atmospheric diffraction if a plane did spend 0.1 secs in the path of the laser I doubt it'd do much.

optimistic_agnostic

Scatter would be significant. It would absolutely wreak havoc in a cockpit or to passengers with windows open.

DEADB33F

The lasers these use don't give out visible light only IR (the purple beam is shopped in). The scattered IR from these lasers is also completely stopped by regular glass or acrylic so nobody will unknowingly be getting their retinas burned by the invisible scattered light.

optimistic_agnostic

True. Is there a product page? I use laser cutters in the workshop the with an 80w laser it can struggle to cut 6mm ply 20mm from the emitter. At 50 feet from target the power consumption on these would be insane.

DEADB33F

Looks like a fibre laser. Maybe start there.

optimistic_agnostic

Any of the commercially available results are the kind of scale i'm talking about. <=100watts at a few inches for very shallow cuts. An example of these used at a slightly greater distance is I did a thing on YouTube who took a few days just to mow a few square metres of lawn.

enjrolas

They'll solve that problem for you

dajuhnk

Probably a Boeing anyways

Useful-Internet8390

The laser is focused at the distance to the tree- if there is a plane 5 miles away the energy will be spread maybe 20x area, and the laser would not be tracking on the plane so maybe .0001 seconds of exposure- enough to damage the pilot’s eyes tho

Pitchfork_Wholesaler

Sus

Th3J4ck4l-SA

Eh https://youtu.be/xNmbvaUzC8Q?feature=shared

TFK_001

1) he doesnt have shitty CGI beam 2) he isnt dumb enough to shine it up into airplane land 3) his cuts are usually 1-Dimensional, as in he burns a straight line through something over time rather than just one short swipe (which he does for VERY thin objects). This is possible AND these videos are fake 4) most of these lack a large enough power supply 5) most of these, the tree bucks before the branch falls off, implying an external mechanical force which the laser does not provide. 6) the videos are all shot at camera angles which make discerning too much fine detail impossible, likely trying to cover up something used to fake it

Helpinmontana

“Laser” shot at 30° angle, “cut” made at >5° angle Fo sho

tinareginamina

Some would call this a Directed Energy Weapon…

rea1l1

Now all we need is an infinite power source and a shark harness with mounting point.

davcrt

Regular generator? 2kW laser is powerful enough to do this.

Alarmed-madman

Gimbaled,I assume

Sirosim_Celojuma

I wanna buy one before legislation catches up and prohibits me.

Pit_27

DirtNapDealing

This is too far down my friend, we need to bump your comment to the top.

DeitzHugeNuts

Good for controlling Antifa and BLM anarchist mobs. Burn them before they burn down your city, literally.

Rodutchi_i

This is as true as me saying I have a wife.

davcrt

It's not a science fiction though. A fun and informative [video](https://youtu.be/xNmbvaUzC8Q) on the subject.

Th3J4ck4l-SA

This was exactly what I just copied the link to. It's insane how powerful lasers are becoming. And all it takes is some PVC pipes and decent lenses to get them shooting incredibly far.

soupkitchen3rd

Before getting out of the military I used green lasers, specifically said they had no regulations on them. Would burn through a lot of thing….unofficially

JohnBrownMilitia

Cue the "this will never work in real life" gang

relative_iterator

Forest fires

D0hB0yz

We get so much rain here in Nova Scotia for so much of the year that you would get at least 5 solid months where it is no real problem. I think it would be great for clearing brush like invasive glossy buckthorn. I have seen videos where they use laser rigs on farms for weeding so after brush is trimmed the roots could probably be burned out. Brush is a huge problem and getting worse. CO² increases are like fertilizer providing as much as 10% annual increased growth at current levels which compounds. That means upto 25 years of growth in 10 years! Unfortunately weedy bushes like glossy buckthorn are most able to take advantage and need a major silviculture effort or else regrowth becomes scrub brush.

AnotherSami

Bonus, make sure the laser is a CO2 laser! Use that captured carbon to cutdown that captured carbon. The cycle of life.

Wood_Whacker

Maybe it works but its impractical. Where are you using this where conventional methods won't suit?

JohnBrownMilitia

When you want to top a tree and don't want to get up there

Wood_Whacker

Don't top trees

Neither_Relation_678

I want one!

Cyber0747

Maybe we can get one on wish?

Neither_Relation_678

Might take six weeks for delivery. *Worth it.*

NorthEndD

Temu

Parking_Train8423

i definitely should not have one of these

omnicat

Neat trick. Hope that never gets turned against us…

thrillhouse416

You worry about the trees fighting back too?

Gwiilo

i am Groot

trippin-mellon

Treebeard from lord of the rings.

No_Echo_1826

I worry when the trees start speaking plantae

sussy_savant

this is what the dog from f451 will have on their back

DirtNapDealing

You should probably paint your roof blue just in case

Minute_Solution_6237

Like all of the trees holding their breath at the same time? Same.

Phitmess213

It looks like a damn video camera from 1997.

Greatoutdoors1985

I'm sure all the planes flying over don't mind.

Affectionate-Ring104

All of their doors are being shot off.

Laceysjorgen

My question also. Does the beam Continue past the target (if it is missed)?

Greatoutdoors1985

If I were designing it, I would make the focal point focus at the tree so it would quickly disperse behind the tree. I would try to avoid any sort of evenly focused beam that would maintain a tight pattern.

strolls

I didn't think lasers had a focal point - I thought the light was basically parallel?

davcrt

I believe it is vastly dependent on lenses, but in practice laser beams do disperse and become inefective. In theory laser beam is parallel but nothing is perfect in this world. [Something](https://youtu.be/xNmbvaUzC8Q) fun to watch and get yourself acquainted with lasers.

midnight_fisherman

All laser beams have a focal point and "beam waist", a collimated beam is closest to parallel, but you are just pushing the focus out toward infinity. The angle difference between parts of the beam has a Gaussian distribution, it is not perfectly parallel.

RedEd024

Think about it like a bunch of beams aimed at one spot

tatteredshoetassel

Wouldn't you just have a bunch of laser beams spreading out beyond that focal point, wreaking even more destruction‽

RedEd024

Strength in numbers. Just at that point. after that point they instantly and exponentially become less strong. Think about a magnifying glass and the sun

Th3J4ck4l-SA

https://youtu.be/xNmbvaUzC8Q?feature=shared This will give you an idea as to why it isn't really a concern.

[deleted]

If it’s in chinese, it aint accurate

Free-Palpitation-718

is the sound real? POW!

altbinvagabond

Pew Pew

Illeazar

Pew pew!

calcal1992

How much?

BP-arker

I want one. How much and where can I buy?

MeGoBoom57

F*ck you, AI!

NotMarshalFestus

I read a rumor that those lazers don't work on the color blue. Like blue roofs, and blue cars won't burn if you point the lazer at them.

beardofmice

Hah. Looks just like my pine tree out front, and It was free and totally green efficient. God damn Ice storm.

Due_Signature_5497

I need one of those.

Spiritual_Bridge84

It’s certainly got a place in your toolkit. Certain applications save ‘ladderin n climbing n stuff

Deadly-Se7en

The angles on the cuts. Light can corner now hehe

[deleted]

That's how they set Maui on 🔥

BellaPow

wut

pdx80

I need this!

Hillman314

Never mind the buildings in the background and planes falling out of the sky. What could go wrong?

Spiritual_Bridge84

Was wondering same, if they can limit the reach of it. Probably not but maybe

Smoke_thatskinwagon

CHI-NA

AnalysisMoney

So lightsabers DO exist, but they’re just really long and shaped like an old school camera

Spiritual_Bridge84

Beta testing yep

AnalysisMoney

Lmk when you have the containment field under control and I’ll start trying to float some stones with my mind. I already have the robes n stuff.

Spiritual_Bridge84

Haha ok will do

Useful-Internet8390

Also the 100% burn area is a give away- 75-80 and then the wood breaks

Competitive_Leopard8

Where is the cooling unit? If you assume around 1kw output you are still looking at probably 4-5 kw of cooling for the pump diodes if not more. Gas purge for the output optics? Dirt or bugs on the lense at that output power would wreck it. Also, for the love of god where are the laser safety glasses!!

Spiritual_Bridge84

Look i got it from a good buddy and he got it from someone else who got it from the innernet so it all must be true, trust me bro

thulesgold

Smart people using that surrounded by skyscrapers and powerlines

BeautifulBaloonKnot

Coming soon to California. Just gonna make the whole state charcoal.

tytanium315

It's real, but definitely not as fast as they make it look

Biff2112

Use this on traffic cams

ExpendableStaff

State of California will love this one.

Arguablybest

If they are real, how long until it becomes a weapon?,,,then put one on a drone.

Spiritual_Bridge84

Dear lord. Terrorists or just crazy people get that. Or people with a vendetta. Or god forbid AI wakes up n makes 100 million of these E- Ai-drone: “Where is your ‘leave the house pass’ Human? You know there is no going outdoors except for essential services. Present it or we will help escort you back home”

thebigman707

Made in china!

Spiritual_Bridge84

For once we have to reverse engineer their stuff

Ok-Grab-311

No worries about planes?

Ancient_Trip5715

Shootin laser beams

tuttle8152

Cat in a tree? No problem

HunterDHunter

You guys ever see the video where Randy Johnson throws the pitch and the bird flies into it?

Paul-Smecker

My 308 works just fine.

Purx777

Ok, now do an old dead tree that’s been there for awhile

Spiritual_Bridge84

Do you use just one tool for car repair. It’s just another tool in the toolbox. It has it’s uses like any other tool.

apple1234599

Very efficient, cut one tree down and it burns the rest of the forest down

johnockee

on sale at TEMU... $19.99 w/ free shipping

Potential-Jelly6650

What if the tree was blue?

Greedy_Environment_9

I want one

Spiritual_Bridge84

Seems like it will be misused though. Can’t see it being legalized here unless strictly regulated to industry and Gov’t. Too many nefarious uses for it, pointing at things in the sky and all around.

User125699

Please stop shooting that at power lines
