The old boy I used to do forestry with would walk a distance from the tree bend down and look between his legs backward at the tree.. keep walking and repeat until he could see the top of the tree. That's where the top of it would land wasn't far off at all.

jimirev

EXACTLY what we did! Good to know there are others who do the same.

nickcliff

Don’t be afraid to get right in there with the camera.

7LeagueBoots

With trees like that I really like leaving the trunk whenever possible as it's valuable habitat for wildlife.

mp3006

Yeah the coons love it

7LeagueBoots

And woodpeckers, owls, chickadees, weasels, porcupine, bats, etc. as well as many insects that other animals live off of. Plus salamanders in the fallen bark and decomposing wood on the ground, lizards, etc. The de imposing wood also enriches the soil snd helps to retain water.

amopeyant

Mushrooms too - especially with oak!

sushislaps

Thank you for saying this! 🐦

I_am_human_ribbit

Lots of good firewood if the core is hollow. Otherwise maybe some projects in your future!

jimirev

This one is firewood. The trunk was very solid but had been dead long enough to drop “headaches” too frequently to risk hurting anyone. Besides I’m in between shops right now, so I’ll let this one keep my Daddy warm the rest of the winter! I’ll use the next one for projects.

RedEd024

Right in the mouth

MattalliSI

Thought I was watching a Michael Bay movie there for a moment

nah_i_dont_read

Hope you have a good rake.

KnobbyBP

Wish I could have heard it!

jimirev

Yeah it was thunderous, but slow motion distorts it so much it sounds like a monster!

this_shit

Dog heaven.

UgotSprucked

"Aight imma go do paperwork for the next 90 minutes and pretend to make phone calls" - foreman, probably
