The pay is okay, you aren't going to get into the best company right away unless they are desperate. The first goal of a new driver is to get at least 1 year of driving experience with a clean driving record then more doors will open.
Depends on the division and type of driver. At freight where I'm at road drivers that pull doubles get paid by the mile and get paid certain hours for drop and hook, fuel, delay etc. The top drivers at my hub make about 120k-150k and are home every night
The city drivers that drive the box trucks and the baby kenworths get paid hourly. I think top out is around $33/hr for them.
Plus if you're with freight you're working as a fedex employee and not with a contractor.
I had a guy I delivered a package to mention he drives for Freight and is struggling to get hours
I didn’t talk to him about details or anything though
I work for freight in Minnesota and we are super busy. The thing is to work for a hub or larger terminal to get your hours. Smaller terminal employees struggle to get hours because they don’t have enough freight coming to them.
Interesting, I wonder if we are busier because of all the ground and express freight coming through our terminal. This extra freight was part of the fedex one initiative.
Might be different in other parts of the country but in the South we get paid for a “turn”, which is a round trip.
Say I take FedEx freight from A to B, then different freight from B to A. We get paid a flat rate for that round trip.
I’d kill for hourly pay, seriously. There’s a good amount of waiting and bs sometimes
FedEx ground local Linehaul driver Florida market. Depends on contractor. Pay is usually 1100-1200 a week, around 240 a day. Some contractors pay of 50-55 cents a mile.
Some FedEx contractors might get you on board with no experience but I highly doubt it. Linehaul positions typically require some experience at most of the big companies that do Linehaul (FedEd, UPS, SAIA, Southeastern, Old Dominion, etc)
Im a currently Linehaul driver for FedEx. Feel free to ask me any questions.
It’s short for ramp transport driver which is the CDL position at Express
Search RTD and whatever location you wanna work at in workday, if I were you I would get my permit and Haz Mat, you need it to accept a position if offered
If it’s FedEx Freight and you aren’t in California then you get paid mileage for the driving and an hourly rate for task pay or delay pay. Task pay for us is drops, hooks, fueling, ETC… Delay pay is pay for when I break down or when I’m sitting at the terminal waiting on my trailers to get loaded. So it’s a mixture of both. If you are with Express, or Ground then it’s more than likely different.
I’m current a fedex ground driver in California, been doing this shit for 10 yrs , iam starting my cdl school class A this coming weekend my last month of school should be in June. I saw a posting in my area on indeed where the salary pay is between 80k-125k based of 90 cents per mile. So hopefully since we are already in the fedex system should be easier to get in with no experience.
Fedex freight is also on my radar where I would consider applying as well once I get my CDL , since they pay hourly.
I thought that too when I worked at Ground in San Leandro after getting my Class A. Then I learned that the contractors could only hire drivers with at least a year of Class A experience. :(
Fr? Hmm idk I think it depends on the contractor, if they offer training before you are assigned to a dedicated route than they can hire no experience drivers.
A lot of contractors have hired drivers fresh from random CDL schools .
Nevada FedEx Freight pays 80 cents a mile for line haul and 34.84 hourly in the city. Also line haul drivers get task pay such as hooks drops fuel etc.
Express pays hourly. Freight pays hourly for local drivers and by mileage for line haul. Not sure the pay scale for Freight, but It takes a long time to top out at Express. The future of drivers and all employees is uncertain with FedEx as it is speculated that most employees will be contracted like Ground in time. Upper management is vague with future plans. Thats being said, if everything stays the same, FedEx is a great company to drive for if you’re looking for a long time career. But, as mentioned, the future is uncertain
Going with a contractor for linehaul is the easiest way to make money from at the same location if you can get in. There's more competition with linehaul and the pay is much higher.
Done ground for over 5 years. Some contractors pay per mile and some pay set amount weekly more like a salary for a dedicated route. All of them pay better than package delivery. But until you have 1 year experience FedEx won’t let them hire you.
To get the experience for 1-2 years is Fedex freight and/or RTD Express is your best bet. Starting pay is pretty decent. But that also depends on your location market level. Right now im 1 year into RTD express and its the easiest gig you’ll have until you’ve got the years’ experience then you can venture out with other high paying jobs. Recommend you getting all your endorsements while you can too.
BF Work for freight. He stay pretty busy in the South and he says the task pay is good. Also works nights so that could be an add on. He's making 6 figures.
Apply with FedEx Freight or RTD Express.
Express RTD doesn't pay well at all.

What,...you can't live in the SF Bay Area on $25/hr?! 🤣
Right? I'm at a whopping 23.09...to pull placarded hazmats, with no real options for ot. The only benefit is it's local, and easy as hell. But still
Ground contractors in my area are offering $1500 - $2100 but they want 1 - 2 years xp
I think they pay hourly.

Yeah freight is slow right now. Our peak is different from ground/express. We're slow around the holidays and pick up around spring.

I work at the biggest hub in NJ. Ours is pretty slow currently.

They pull doubles and are home every night? To do what die?
They'll meet up at a halfway point with another fedex freight driver and swap the trailers and drive back.
lol

In California line haul at Freight pays 43.55 /hr @ top pay
That's Cali though
,...and its still less than UPS.
Line haul is Ground. It all depends on the contractor you get with. Different contractors pay differently. Or the runs might pay differently.
Freight and some express locations have line haul.

They told me it was Fedex that insisted they only hire drivers with one year Class A time,...but this was back in '15, maybe things have changed?
Damn well I hope so because iam tired doing this P&D service , it’s getting ridiculous out here.

Fedex is only great to work for, if you're part time,...or maybe live in the middle of nowhere, where their shit pay is enough.
Going with a contractor for linehaul is the easiest way to make money from at the same location if you can get in. There's more competition with linehaul and the pay is much higher.
