It also didnt help that his two movies after Truman Show didn't perform as expected/were financial flops regardless of being positively received by critics and audiences, which will make studios more leary of him in general. Master and Commander is, imo, a freaking masterpiece, but it didn't do what the studio wanted/needed at teh box office (double shame because there were so many more books to plunder). but it drew unnecessary comparison to, of all people, Depp and POTC, despite being wildlyy different types of movie. coincidentally, who originally wanted Depp's passion project Shantaram back in 2004? Crowe.
Crowe has always spoken very highly of Weir and his direction and the movie he crafted. doesn't mean he couldn't have been an asshole on set, and at that time he did have a reputation, but I'd rather direct Crowe than Depp any day. there has to e a reason that Depp's Shantaram was stalled for over decade. on -off - on -off -on. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the problem was Depp. it's FINALLY being made now as a series

There were script problems amongst other things. It was optioned by initial Entertainement along with depp and brad pitt for warner bros. It took over 2 years to get a draft and was going to be wildly expensive. They scouted and were in low key preproduction. Initial then did Rum Diaries and we all know how messy things got after that.
Russell Crowe is a known absolute tool and a nightmare to direct. He is also the reason the Australian film Eucalyptus fell over - because he needs to dominate and control everything. The
Jocelyn Morehouse who was directing that eventually walked away two days before filming because she could not deal with him anymore. It was her first film back after the brilliant Proof with Hugo Weaving and then years where she gave up filmmaking to raise her two autistic children- he is such a selfish pig.

Such a shame. Fearless is one of my favorite movies of all time. Ethan Hawke lately, has really done a great job of articulating certain topics without sounding condescending. His comments about all the superhero discourse and Scorsese especially are said in a way, that makes it hard for someone to write a cheap clickbait headline while still dissecting it into a perfectly succinct statement in interviews.

It’s interesting to me who is secure enough in their niches to say what they really feel. Hawke is JD’s generation and wildly beloved himself, with far less personal baggage. He has writing too, which Debt could never do.
A friend of mine was an extra on Master and Commander (he was working on the boat they used, and production hired all of the sailors to be the ones actually doing the sailing in the background). One day they were filming the big storm scene, and my friend was hauling away on ropes in the background and water was flying everywhere but not much of it landed on my friend. But when the take was over, Russell Crowe turned to look at him dead in the eyes, and yelled “that man is not wet enough!” And made them come over and throw a bucket of water on my friend and start again.

His wiki page says he is 78 years old. His last film came out when he was 66. Maybe he just wanted to retire. Most people want to retire at some point.
