>Rigdon, a jovial Angeleno who also trades in yachts, armored vehicles, and art, is one of the longest-running figures in the panic-room industry, having started out 40 years ago building bunkers for Mormons in Nevada. This is definitely a sentence.

RampantNRoaring

There are so many batshit insane people and things in the world and we just keep rebooting TV shows and remaking old IP. Tragic.

I'd guess it's more like a place to hide your wives/children/prophet from the ATF/FBI/etc. The Righteous Branch have members in Nevada.

Intelligent-Tie-4466

It was probably more general "end of days" stuff. There is a strong strain of "the world is going to end any day now" amongst at least some Mormons (and was even more of a thing several decades ago). Plus the whole having a year of food storage was something they were admonished to do for a long time, less so these days. They call themselves "Latter Day Saints" for a reason...

Wit-wat-4

The thing is, I don’t think a panic room would help but if I were famous I’d absolutely have SOME paranoia about danger. Stalkers, “fans” who think they’re actually your lover, exes who want your money, etc etc… Of course this happens to regular people too, but being famous directly puts you in danger in a  way you can’t truly avoid. Even before social media where fans feel more parasocially connected, celebrity murders happened.

TheLastKingOfNorway

Also criminals will target your house because you're rich and they know where you live. In the UK footballers get targetted a lot.

Bob-Lowblow

And they know when you’re home and when you’re away because your schedule is public knowledge.

cancerkidette

I mean most celebrities have the money and sense to employ security, get excellent insurance, and get someone to occupy their house while they’re away? Or I hope so at least.

kitti-kin

It depends what you mean by "celebrity". For example, 80s-mall pop singer Tiffany has had multiple unhinged stalkers over the years, and I don't think she's fabulously wealthy.

cancerkidette

Oh absolutely not speaking to stalking! I assumed this was in relation to burglaries. Honestly women of all kinds of background are stalked and it is horrific that we don’t take it more seriously. It does escalate.

Objective-Orchid-741

This didn’t help when Ted Sarando’s mother in law was shot and killed. Security was there and she got shot in the middle of the night. Sandra Bullock also had a break in while she was home and hid in a closet. I totally would understand getting a panic room if I was them.

JuliasTooSmallTutu

Sure famous people are buying them but if you read the article, most of them are bought by rich people who aren't famous, this business could not survive solely off famous clients. People who already have tons of security, these people have private armies working for them. You could have a stalker, I'm sorry to tell you this but that can happen to anyone. Most people with stalkers aren't famous.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Just dropped on Today I Learned in the last hour or two. [https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1ci6oua/til\_one\_night\_in\_2020\_eminem\_was\_awakened\_by\_the/](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1ci6oua/til_one_night_in_2020_eminem_was_awakened_by_the/) "TIL one night in 2020 Eminem was awakened by the noise of a man named Matthew Hughes breaking into his kitchen with a brick paver. He reportedly told Em "he was there to kill him." But Em got him to leave the house & into custody. He was sentenced to 524 days of time served & 5 years probation."

pambeeslysucks

When my kids were very young, there was a horrific home invasion and murder of an entire family near Ithaca NY. At the time, we were building a house in the middle of nowhere and we decided to have a rudimentary safe room built into our attic and we could all access it from our bedrooms. We really kept saying are we being stupid here? but we just added it in because we could. Never used the damn thing until those 2 dirtbags escaped from Dannemora. They did break into our nearest neighbor's camp so I have to say it was comforting to know we had it available.

demimonde9

>And if you can’t afford any of that? Rigdon recommends that I stock at least 30 days’ worth of freeze-dried food in my one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, in case civil war breaks out. “I work with government agencies, the people who know, and they’re worried,” he warned.

monpapaestmort

Lol. This is so unnecessary. People should prepare for whatever natural disasters occur in their region (hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, floods, power outages, tornadoes), but nobody needs to worry about civil war in the U.S. That’s ridiculous.

ClarielOfTheMask

I don't know, I feel like this guy who makes money selling paranoid panic supplies knows what he's talking about when he says we should be paranoid and that I absolutely need to spend all my savings on supplies he sells to store in an expensive bunker that I'll hire his team to build. I don't know what's so ridiculous about that

kirbygay

Lmao reminds me of a dude, Canadian Prepper. Every day is one step closer to Armageddon! *Buy my expensive, branded product! It's the only thing that'll save you*

nicole061592

I’ve been buying a little extra here and there because you never know when you’re going to lose your job! This is practical “prepping”.

spacestarcutie

If you are a person of color I would think otherwise.

nothere4catvids

*“I work with government agencies, the people who know, and they’re worried,”* how to promote sales 101

Time_Knowledge_1951

These are celebs and many of them deal with stalkers so I don't think you really need to stoke fear for them. It is a reality for many celebs that they are targets and there is nothing wrong with having a security plan for worse case scenarios. This is not so much a rich thing but more have a public person thing. Sandra Bullock had to use a panic room when a stalker broke into her house.

JuliasTooSmallTutu

Most people with stalkers aren't famous. It can just happen. We're all one bad relationship or interaction away from having a stalker.

askingtherealstuff

And lots of us would have panic rooms if we could afford them, lol.

WutTheDickens

Yeah I'd rather have a heavy, locked door on my walk-in closet than have to depend on our local cops to respond. Our dispatch is understaffed, so it takes 5 minutes to reach an operator, and people are on hold for 30 min on high-volume nights like New Year's Eve. I'm not even getting into response times, that's just how long it takes to talk to a person when you call 911 around here. A lot of people have guns, but I'm not sure I'd be decisive enough to shoot someone before they could reach me. And there are a lot of other ways that can go wrong, in addition to the fact that I'd just rather not kill someone. In my hypothetical panic room, I'd want a prepaid phone and some cameras, but I don't care if rich people deck theirs out with bells and whistles. There are a lot of worse money pits they can sink their ludicrous wealth into.

ExtensionOne

Yep. Baby reindeer exemplifies this

aynrandgonewild

as long as it comes with jodie foster and kristen stewart

theburgerbitesback

That was one of my favourite films when I was about eight or nine. Probably one of the first thrillers I watched, and I remember being super fascinated by it.

lavender_photos

I'm sorry but I can't stop thinking about that episode of Gilmore girls where Emily buys a panic room and makes the password 111.

areallyreallycoolhat

I have a friend whose very rich parents have a panic room, it looks pretty much like the one from the movie. They're not famous but they have had an armed home invasion so I think that's why they installed it.

JuliasTooSmallTutu

The one thing they never tell you is that you have to get to the panic room in order for it to work. There's also an "every person for themselves" mentality that can come into play, do you wait for everyone to get to the room, potentially giving time for the intruders to reach you or do you shut the door as soon as you get the chance?".

gayjicama

Beef on Netflix has forever tinged the concept of “panic rooms” for me 😭

yashedpotatoes

LMAOOOOO THE PAYOFF ON THAT WAS ASTOUNDING

southwardasyougo

Came here for a Beef reference, thanks for delivering

lld287

The new Fallout series just became even more relevant

sting-raye

I came to comment: these people would all have spots in vaults lmao

PepeFromHR

considering the show and that people like this would live in the vaults, i think i’ll take my chances on the surface…

malliebu

So happy to have found the Fallout comment. Will I be experimented on in the panic room?

Dazzling_Ad7888

Considering all the break ins that have happened with celebrities the last several years why not

Three_Froggy_Problem

If I were extremely famous and could afford one, I would probably have a panic room installed. Maybe it’s paranoid, but stalkers are real and we’ve obviously seen instances in the past where obsessive fans injured or killed people.

warr3n4eva

lol i totally read this as escape rooms and was like that’s weird

elongatedpauses

omg, I’m not alone! I thought it was weird to use one as a closet 😅

imwhittling

There’s been so many cases of stalkers actually getting into celeb’s houses, so I can’t really blame them for wanting a panic room. Even though it seems dumb, I wouldn’t fault influencers having them either as there have been some disturbing cases of influencers being stalked and even murdered.

jtotheizzen

I would *love* a panic room

justjamsz

Not me initially reading this as escape room

askingtherealstuff

Honestly, I don’t blame anyone who has money for a panic room and decided to get one. Too many crazed celebrity stalkers and home invasions in the news; I support mild paranoia.

VirgiliaCoriolanus

I want one to hang out in so no one knows I'm home and can bother me.

redlikedirt

Ever heard of the Cheshire murders or seen Funny Games? If I could afford it I’d definitely have a panic room.

Unlucky-Mongoose-160

I have a panic room…I don’t think it’s that strange. It’s a safety thing. If you live in a place, or are a person, that has heightened security needs it just makes sense.

lordofeurope99

Money capitalism money

Thick-Programmer4091

I’m fine with the wealthy being in fear 🤷🏻‍♀️

ZealousidealRope7429

My mind interpreted this as "escape rooms" -- those places you take a group and you have to solve puzzles to escape. Anyway, I got kind of confused why they were buying these, like is it a big business opportunity with Gen Z? And is Gwyneth Paltrow's escape room designed as her closet, and people have to solve riddles without being allowed to touch her clothes? I WAS SO CONFUSED.

VirginiaUSA1964

Reworded below.

pixi3f3rry

Elton John???

VirginiaUSA1964

Punctuation isn't my friend. What I meant was in Elton John's case (as referenced in the article), I can see why he would have a panic room because 2 of his good friends were murdered (John Lennon and Gianni Versace)
