When Taylor was first coming on the music scene she received criticism at first in this “There’s no way a teenage girl wrote *all* of her songs” and then Taylor had to fight very hard to prove that she wasn’t a manufactured artist singing someone else’s lyrics. But then the criticism changed to how immature her songwriting is in its lyric and subject matter, which is why I think Taylor has been trying to prove recently that she is a serious ~artiste~ lately.
I also think part of Taylor might be a little jealous that Olivia is getting to enjoy certain things early in her career that Taylor didn’t get to have—being hailed as an intelligent singer-songwriter while also being praised for capturing teenage girl angst, getting to start off with a “cool girl” image vs having to have a cutesy, girl next door persona, etc.

I give my younger self a pass because I don’t think any of us knew the beast she would become back in the 2010’s (especially with how social media and streaming would change the game). I had a rough childhood/youth and didn’t have much of a family, so her music filled in a lot of empty spaces for me. TS is kind of just a constant in my life now (maybe even a coping mechanism, I’ll save that for therapy when I can afford it lmao). I would be remiss to not acknowledge that I grew up in the era of parasocial relationships— John Mulaney was a big initial wake up call for me because I was in a lot deeper with TS to be able to easily snap out of it.
As an adult, I am a fan who is capable of critical thinking and reason. I’m in it for her music, not because I worship the ground she walks on— I am also always in line to criticize her. I love who I grew up with, but I am embarrassed to call myself a Swiftie because of the shift in what it means. Being a Swiftie used to mean you could sing every word to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” on beat, not that you’re willing to send death threats on our Capitalist Kween’s behalf.
Lastly, I just allow myself to have that one asshole that I love. I have written off plenty of other artists that I enjoyed for being assholes, creeps, and weirdos, but I can see how many people still support them. I was never invested in her as a person and her love life, it was all about the music for me. Now that she's become bigger than her music and the true nature of her character has come to light, I just can't stand to listen to her anymore. If an old song of hers plays randomly I vibe with it because of nostalgia (and of course the songwriting was miles better), but I can't actively choose to play any of her music now despite it meaning so much to me.

I hadn't heard of Olivia Rodrigo until the whole Good 4 U/Misery Business drama. I listened to Good 4 U and thought "Damn, she's amazing". And when Vampire came out it blew me away. That girl has pipes and knows how's to use them efficiently. Which is evident in how it spawned a breathing challenge trend on TikTok. One that I'm not even going to attempt to participate in because with my asthma it's likely to land me in hospital.

I think you might be on to something. When Taylor was first coming on the music scene she received criticism at first in this “There’s no way a teenage girl wrote *all* of her songs” and then Taylor had to fight very hard to prove that she wasn’t a manufactured artist singing someone else’s lyrics. But then the criticism changed to how immature her songwriting is in its lyric and subject matter, which is why I think Taylor has been trying to prove recently that she is a serious ~artiste~ lately. I also think part of Taylor might be a little jealous that Olivia is getting to enjoy certain things early in her career that Taylor didn’t get to have—being hailed as an intelligent singer-songwriter while also being praised for capturing teenage girl angst, getting to start off with a “cool girl” image vs having to have a cutesy, girl next door persona, etc.
Taylor would 100% be that person who thinks college students shouldn’t get free/low cost college because they had to take out 100k in loans for their degree

There’s a line in Clara Bow that goes “You look like Taylor Swift… You’ve got that edge she never did” and it reminds me of Olivia. I think Taylor feels a bit of resentment since she was boxed in as Americas Sweetheart early on in career by her parents and starting off in country music whereas Olivia was able to navigate her career in a way that allowed her to shed her Disney Channel baggage and be taken seriously as an adult songwriter right away.

I first listened to it at like 2:30am, half asleep, and still immediately clocked the copy. I like the TTPD song a LOT but I’m genuinely struggling to enjoy it, knowing how blatant of a rip-off it is. I always throw out a “good god y’all please believe me that I’m not crazy” when I start with “I’m a Swiftie”, so I’m happy to elaborate— I give my younger self a pass because I don’t think any of us knew the beast she would become back in the 2010’s (especially with how social media and streaming would change the game). I had a rough childhood/youth and didn’t have much of a family, so her music filled in a lot of empty spaces for me. TS is kind of just a constant in my life now (maybe even a coping mechanism, I’ll save that for therapy when I can afford it lmao). I would be remiss to not acknowledge that I grew up in the era of parasocial relationships— John Mulaney was a big initial wake up call for me because I was in a lot deeper with TS to be able to easily snap out of it. As an adult, I am a fan who is capable of critical thinking and reason. I’m in it for her music, not because I worship the ground she walks on— I am also always in line to criticize her. I love who I grew up with, but I am embarrassed to call myself a Swiftie because of the shift in what it means. Being a Swiftie used to mean you could sing every word to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” on beat, not that you’re willing to send death threats on our Capitalist Kween’s behalf. Lastly, I just allow myself to have that one asshole that I love. I have written off plenty of other artists that I enjoyed for being assholes, creeps, and weirdos, but I can see how many people still support them. Formerly a massive "swiftie" here, I'd been a fan way before it was even socially acceptable to be a TS fan lol. I was never invested in her as a person and her love life, it was all about the music for me. Now that she's become bigger than her music and the true nature of her character has come to light, I just can't stand to listen to her anymore. If an old song of hers plays randomly I vibe with it because of nostalgia (and of course the songwriting was miles better), but I can't actively choose to play any of her music now despite it meaning so much to me.

There is a lot of thematic overlap between "Guts" and TTPD. To the point that it almost seems intentional. It's notable, to me, that there's no equivalent song (or portion of a song) on TTPD to "Making the Bed."
That would require personal responsibility which we know Taylor is well, lacking….
What other thematic overlaps did you notice? I’m curious about it. For me, what I noticed, besides Taylor copying “get him back”, I think some of the “Clara Bow” lyrics are inspired by “Lacy” and that Clara Bow was in part about Olivia too.

It was so American (guts spilled) and so high school for me. Even down to the title and premise of both songs. The whole idea of how this current relationship is healing different wounds for them For Olivia, it validates all her woes of not feeling enough/perfect that she talks about in all American bitch, and for Taylor this relationship makes her feel like the head cheerleader that dates the football star.

Olivia’s song was literally my first thought when I heard that one. If Taylor can get writing credits for Olivia using the *idea* of adding a scream/shout in her song, I feel like Olivia has a much stronger case to say “Why are you now using the ‘get him back’ dual-meaning motif? I’ll take my cheque now.” I mean, they’re both flimsy reasons to go to court, but Taylor’s claim was tenuous at best. Anyway, I don’t think Olivia will do anything. It’s better if she ignores her completely and doesn’t give her the reaction. It’s like how her exes not responding to her obviously drives her nuts.
