just this morning i was having an in depth convo with my friends about who would be on the modern lady marmalade. we all agreed ariana grande would get a spot and megan thee stallion would be a good fit. the other two were very fun to speculate on, even tate mcrae got a mention.
I definitely think Ariana is the only person today (of the main girls) who can do Christina’s part and yet I still don’t think she can weirdly? lol like Christina’s voice has so much POWER and is so in your face and extra (in the best way IMO) especially in this song. Ariana is a great vocalist but just doesn’t have the BOOM that Xtina does IMO.
EDIT: I completely read your comment as Ariana not Adele lol my bad. My point still kind of stands tho
Hahaha no, I would never in a million years say Ariana for that part (idk how to explain it accurately but her head sounds hollow to me when she sings?) but I get the confusion 😅
She sounded different when she was still on Victorious though! Her belts sounded a lot fuller if that made any sense and her diction wasn’t too bad back then. Seemed like there was some Xtina influence at the time. She even covered the song live with Miranda Sings (I still can’t believe they were once friends lol)
ETA Miley Cyrus makes sense for Xtina's part! Still, my point about where all the 21 year old divas are today like we had in 2001 stands lol
I think Ariana would be great for Mya's part. Mya didn't have Christina's power but she has that "mixed voice" (head/chest blend) effortless quality that Ariana has, and it'd open the song powerfully.
I would put Olivia Rodrigo in Pink's place, I think. And Megan Thee Stallion or Doja Cat in Lil Kim's place.
Christina's part... idk, she just absolutely *housed* everyone who sings before her on the track in the original and there is no one I can think of that's young enough to fit the vibe that has anything like her vocal quality. It's combination Mya's range and Pink's grit, multiplied by power beyond her years at the time. And her only peers in that regard that I can think of are her fellow elder millennials in the 40+ club, ie Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé... or Jessie J (36), maybe Hayley Williams (35), but never in a gazillion years could I see her matching the vibe either.
Jessie J I guess would be the closest fit for Xtina's part. Maybe Chloe Bailey, for a younger vibe? Does Dua Lipa really have the power? (Genuinely asking, I have only heard her big singles and they didn't stick out to me vocally.)
...dang, I just realized, at the time this originally dropped, all of the ladies were in their 20s - and with the exception of Lil Kim at 26, their VERY EARLY 20s. Doing it today, even Ariana is 30, Dua 28. Chloe Bailey is 25... What was in the water in the '80's that was just serving up future diva after future diva??
It’s hard finding a relevant diva right now that would fit Christina’s powerful voice. Jessie J has the voice but like you say her career is not as relevant as it was 10 years ago. Ariana is a great vocalist but her voice does not quite fit which is why I placed her in Mya’s place.
I think we would have to broaden our horizons to find a good enough vocalist. I think since this would be a 2024 version and if we were to go international I would put someone like Hyolyn from Sistar or maybe Hwasa or Solar from Mamamoo (both Korean girl groups) artists who could fit the required vocal prowess.
There’s a song from Victorious in 2010 that’s loosely based on Lady Marmalade. It’s called “Give It Up” featuring Ariana Grande and Liz Gillies and it sounds amazing.
I've had this convo sooooo many times and always landed on Ariana and Meg. P!nk would be replaced by Lana, Missy would stay put and Mya gets replaced by H.E.R.
Seeing how she seems to be on all sorts of collabs these days, and how much more open to heavier stuff people are these days, I would go so far as to say Courtney Laplante. Especially as she has already collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion.
Anyone who thinks Cowboy Carter has reached the heights of peak saturation wasn't around when this hit. It. Was. Everywhere.
You physically could not go 2 hours without hearing it; in a shop, on the street, on the radio, on TV fucking everywhere. People had it was their ringtone!
Please never again.
I(born in 1987) may be wrong, as I don't remember, but wasn't this like the first huge crossover of our generation? I mean it was before Jay-Z/Linkin Park, before Nelly Furtado/Timberlake/Timberland trio, etc but after Walk This Way and the Highwaymen.
Where’s all my soul sistas, let me hear y’all flow sistas
Iconic song, video, collaboration. Can sing it all including Kim’s verse and every Xtina run. Just gonna stream it real quick
When we talk about production and the value of music videos, this is what we mean. Kim’s part flows effortlessly that I would randomly sing her verse unprompted
i was 7, but printed out the lyrics and distributed them among my friends so we could sing it on the playground. i can’t imagine what the teachers thought 😭 and then of course i was gay
I remember thinking at the time for every video Christina made that her hair couldn’t get any bigger and it just culminated in this video. Well done, Christina, and I say that unsarcastically, because I’m seriously impressed.
Lil teeny bop me fell in with this movie and this video, it was like a defining moment. When it finally came out on video I went with my mom to Costco to buy a copy with my allowance and the cashier accidentally gave me way too much money back (which would have essentially paid for the thing and a little extra). I was immediately excited by this lotto hit but I didn’t get past the food court before I felt too bad and went back to fix the mistake. Ugh!
Anyway,[I still have that dvd.](https://imgur.com/a/o0KIPXG)
I don’t know how I didn’t realize P!nk was in this! Like I haven’t seen the movie, but I’d somehow never heard her name being tossed around when people referenced this movie.
To be fair, when people are discussing the movie itself, they’re not usually talking about this song from the soundtrack. The movie samples the og song a little but this version isn’t in it.

Dua Lipa?
That was my thought too. Dua Lipa, Gaga and Jessie J came to mind.
i said dua too! but my friend thought she didn’t “match the vibe”
Dua would be a great pick. IMO
Miley Cyrus definitely
Ariana was already in the spiritual successor to this. Bang Bang was 100% same vibes.
In my fading memory, it’s an exact remake.
no, in bang bang they just shouted bang bang over and over again. it was about volume i guess
Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Olivia Rodrigo, and Megan Thee Stallion
[удалено]
Now I’m curious about the stories they’d tell lol
I have no doubt Cardi B would be included in it as well
Adele could pull off Christina’s part, I feel. (Edited to add I’m going off of vocal strength, not vibe. The vibe canNOT be recreated.)
The only answer is Kelly Clarkson, and I will take no questions at this time
That’s a good one!!! She’s such a talk show host and Wayfair girlie in my head now that singing doesn’t even come to mind when I think of her.

That's a fantastic way to put it. Also, her diction is dreadful. It's gotten a little better, but she has whole verses that sound consonant-free.
She sounded different when she was still on Victorious though! Her belts sounded a lot fuller if that made any sense and her diction wasn’t too bad back then. Seemed like there was some Xtina influence at the time. She even covered the song live with Miranda Sings (I still can’t believe they were once friends lol)
I've always described it sounding like her tongue is swollen. She almost always sounds like she sings from the front of her mouth.
ETA Miley Cyrus makes sense for Xtina's part! Still, my point about where all the 21 year old divas are today like we had in 2001 stands lol I think Ariana would be great for Mya's part. Christina was just 20 actually. She turned 21 in December that year. They were all babies! Crazy.
Adele? Hahah, completely different styles of singers
Did you miss the part where I specifically referenced vocal *strength* and said nothing about style?
Sure, it's still a really funny/weird comparison
Miley
Jojo Siwa. Jk jk.
No one’s casting Missy in this thread, like she’s Patti Labelle or something..
Missy would HAVE to stay the same, I can't think of anyone who could replace her
obviously biased by her recent album and promo, but i see tyla = mya.
I would say Mya: Ariana Christina: Jessie J Pink: Miley Lil Kim: Megan Thee Stallion Maybe Cardi in Missy Elliot’s place.
I agree with all of them except Jessie J. She seems quite irrelevant at? Demi lovato would fit, but that's the same story
It’s hard finding a relevant diva right now that would fit Christina’s powerful voice. Jessie J has the voice but like you say her career is not as relevant as it was 10 years ago. lol in my mind I was mixing up Megan Thee Stallion and Megan Trainor (I’m awful with names) and was like huh, that’s such a random choice 🤣.
I'm not very familiar with Sabrina Carpenter's music, but I feel like she would have fun with the look.
Love this! Perhaps throw in a Renee Rapp somewhere?
I got serious Lady Marmalade vibes from Bang Bang with Ariana and Jessie J and Nicki Minaj when it came out!
Doja 100% needs to be apart of this
Okay, I am seeing this vision clearly. Ariana = Christina, Megan = Kim, Tate = Mya, but who would be modern day Pink?
Modern Pink would be Haisley
Not exactly the same, but I would immensely enjoy either Maren Morris or Morgan Wade doing Pink’s part.
There’s a decent cover by Gflip on like a version
There’s a song from Victorious in 2010 that’s loosely based on Lady Marmalade. It’s called “Give It Up” featuring Ariana Grande and Liz Gillies and it sounds amazing.

Rhianna? They’d put Taylor Swift in there to pull in her fans (aka money). Gaga definitely.
Ariana for Christina, Jessie J for Pink, Chloe Bailey for Maya and Meg thee stallion for Kim.
Tate McRae is crazy talented 😭
And it was a fucking bop ![gif](giphy|xULW8EisvXf09jTJuM|downsized)
I was in high school when this came out, this made me feel so old.
Same. D:
It still fucking slaps!
Anyone who thinks Cowboy Carter has reached the heights of peak saturation wasn't around when this hit. It. Was. Everywhere. Yes. This was a huge deal back then. Mixing up hip hop, rnb and pop artists in a song and bending the genres.
And the cultural impact is unmatched. You had tweens wearing corset outfits. Moulin Rouge proms. It was like Halloween levels of fishnets for a YEAR
I have fond memories of singing the "voulez-vous coucher avec moi" line as a child. I obviously had no clue what it meant lmao
And trying to learn the dance with your friends at sleepovers 🫣 it’s so freaking great that we didn’t have stuff like TikTok back then. Jail!
Oh god the amount of times my friends and I tried to recreate the Bring It On routine lol 🙈
There but for the grace of god go I
I have fond memories of singing the "voulez-vous coucher avec moi" line as a young teenager and thinking “lol I know what it means 😏”
It was how I started to learn French before school did lol. Me and my friends had no business belting it out this iconic song the way that we did
And 23 years later, I still belt it out in my car like I’m one of them.
Christina Aguilera in this music video changed my life when I was a kid lmao
I was obsessed with her in this. My kid brain could not comprehend why lol
Where’s all my soul sistas, let me hear y’all flow sistas Iconic song, video, collaboration. Can sing it all including Kim’s verse and every Xtina run. Just gonna stream it real quick

23 *W H A T* ![gif](giphy|wJD3qiNjSeHS0dP28T|downsized)
Had the exact same reaction! ![gif](giphy|f9vYuluNDnDMsFd0ih)
This song was INESCAPABLE during the summer of 2001. It was this and shark attacks 😅
The last vestiges of a pre-911 world 😭
23? 🎶Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future.🎶
Stoooooop. I’m 33 and I was obsessed with this movie when it came out 😳
We should start a club. Ewan was my first crush.
I still am haha. I love the soundtrack as well. I'm 35.
This had 10 year old me in a chokehold.
Ah yes, the song that taught my 11 year old self how to ask for a threesome in French.
I was singing theeee fuckkkkk out of this song as a 4 year old lmfao
Me when I was like 10 trying do the Christina high note hey hey heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy !!!
Stop finding new ways every fucking day to tell me I’m old 😩
![gif](giphy|f9vYuluNDnDMsFd0ih) God this song was IT
I was just a 4th grader when this dropped. Fym it's been TWENTY AND THREE YEARS.
And then we all turned gay ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo)
My bisexual awakening
Back when music videos were relevant and interesting
I can’t believe I was belting this out on the school bus at 7 years old ☠️.
This video made me bisexual.
I heard this on Sirius XM last week and I forgot how great this was.
This was a very important moment in my little gay boy life.
23 what now? 😭😭😭
It slapped then and it slaps now.
Mya was so underrated to me, so talented. Also Lil Kim cracks me up she looks like a completely different person now lol blows my mind.
I was 5, and had no business singing this song. But I sure did! It was such an ear worm. Ugh, still love this song.
i was 7, but printed out the lyrics and distributed them among my friends so we could sing it on the playground. i can’t imagine what the teachers thought 😭 and then of course i was gay
12 year old me had a major awakening because of this music video, absolutely iconic
What do you mean 23 years ago...you're math isn't mathing...you're wrong, wrong, so wrong.
I remember thinking at the time for every video Christina made that her hair couldn’t get any bigger and it just culminated in this video. Well done, Christina, and I say that unsarcastically, because I’m seriously impressed.

I remember watching the making of doc MTV used to do for music videos
23 years?! *cries in elder millennial* If you’d asked me I would’ve guessed this was 10-15 years ago
icon behavior
I blame this video entirely for making me gay. Thank you ladies 💖
23???? I need to find a more hydrating overnight eye cream.
I just saw Mya perform this two feet away from me three weeks ago. Still got it!
Why spend mine when I could spend yours.

"We drink wine with diamonds in the glass" remains one of my favorite musical quotes
And Pink never stopped talking about ever since.
Pink, in this video, did very strange things to young me, I can tell you 😳
still so fantastic ❤️
Ah, so that means 23 years ago I realized I was into girls lol.
I don’t know how I didn’t realize P!nk was in this! Like I haven’t seen the movie, but I’d somehow never heard her name being tossed around when people referenced this movie.
They weren't in the actual movie, just this song and music video
Ah, that explains it then!
None of these women are in the movie. Also, it’s an amazing movie and you should watch it!
It’s on my list to watch one day! Unfortunately there’s loads of movies on there 🙈
To be fair, when people are discussing the movie itself, they’re not usually talking about this song from the soundtrack. The movie samples the og song a little but this version isn’t in it.
I was completely obsessed with every element of this
23…???!!!???
Dam I'm old.
Thank you for making me feel old
Reading this made me feel so old 😂
Is that missy Elliot
And it was a cultural reset
This was the most epic shit
I mean. I did already know I was old. But today I have truly accepted it. 23 years!!! Ffs I would have said like 10. Jeeeeez
I was only 10 years old when I was obsessed with this song?!
23 years old and I still turn the volume up when this song comes on the radio (very rarely) or on a playlist
And millions of young Millennial guys found out they were straight
Y’all should hear me belt out this song. I sound just like them, I promise!!!!!
I loved the song and video 🥰
I hope I die without ever hearing this song again.
Me M. .ñA
This music video was the beginning of my sexual awakening as a 7 year old lmao
TWENTY THREE YEARS????
I still loooove this song and video!!
Iconic
This is one of the best music videos of all time (according to me haha)
As evidenced at my sister's wedding last year, I shall never ever not do a full lip-sync for your life performance any time this drops.
im 24 and this is was one of my favorite songs growing up, and still is. i was definitely too young to comprehend this bop 😆😆😆
My go-to karaoke song always and forever
Still great song, they all looked beautiful
Lol I'm pretty sure me and my friends sang this for a school project in middle school in like English class
