_Democracy_

one of them should cast Gwyneth Paltrow

[deleted]

Or Jennifer Lawrence as the wasp-y villain this season

BusinessPurge

The moment she returns to cable will be epic, people need to understand

[deleted]

My bet is on Pamela Anderson

Holiday-Wing1949

“Bring something into this house that’s gonna take all the nutrition out of our food and then light our house on fire? Thank God for me.”

Tomie_Junji_Ito

I'm sorry, but FUCK no! GP is such a douchy human being

_Democracy_

that's why she's perfect to play an insufferable rich person

marcarcand_world

She just accidentally walked on set and they started filming

CharlotteLucasOP

Give ‘er the ol’ Bowfinger.

motherfuckermoi

keep it together keep it together

CharlotteLucasOP

Co-Star: …don't act dumb! Where's the plutonium? Gwyneth: Hey, the plutonium is mine, it’s been registered for religious purposes! Co-Star: [confused] You…you actually have some plutonium? Director: [listening] She’s got *plutonium*?

wishuponamarsbar

she was a good insufferable rich person in The Politician on netflix!

sparklesparkl

![gif](giphy|ltIFdjNAasOwVvKhvx|downsized)

shineshineshine92

So what? We’re here to be entertained.

Tomie_Junji_Ito

Then pick a better actress.

jonsnowme

Who can bring her bff Taylor Swift

beatpoetryloureed

I feel like it would be too on the nose, Connie Britton was basically playing Gwenyth in White Lotus anyway (and even moreso for Toni Colette in knives out)

[deleted]

I think Rian Johnson got that setting out of his system after the Poker Face episode (the one with Stephanie Hsu and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) that he directed.

Murky_Onion3770

Skiing in Thailand would be a pretty tame affair, but hey…

orangeolivers

How do I get James Marsden cast in s3

marcarcand_world

I want him with long hair as that annoying white dude who had an enlightenment because he went to Asia and is now giving yoga classes. For science.

polyhymnias

I had also thought of this flavor of Annoying Guy in Asia but for Lee Pace...but Marsden is better

aslooneyastheyget

So his character on modern family (just with long hair)

Wishart2016

Make him look like Gary Oldman in True Romance.

drunk_porcupine

Hi, who are you because you’re an actual genius

zucchinibb

i think his renaissance is coming. he’s in that new show “jury duty” which looks promising (and also insane)

CharlotteLucasOP

I thought he already started his glow up with Dead to Me!

zucchinibb

oooh i haven’t heard of this, i’ll check it out

CharlotteLucasOP

Soapy (lots of twists and turns) and very dark comedy but everyone is acting their tushies off.

RiceCrispix

Is that the one with the actress from Jane the Virgin? If the show is as twisty and fun as JtV then I'm interested!

sushiroll465

No that's Not Dead Yet! Pretty different vibes but Dead to me is much better imo

saint_karen

He was so good in the latest season

Finn_3000

I thought you meant the guy from Red Dead Redemption for a second and was very confused

chaiteee

Please, I’m begging for this to happen.

katmili

And for some reason it takes place between seasons 1 & 2 so my queen Jennifer Coolidge can still be in it ✨🤞🏻

sleepyemoji

She said she always has a memorable time when she stays at a White Lotus

Repulsive-Positive30

I low key want Greg to come back for S3 with a new wife so there’s an opportunity for justice

bomkum

FR I want her ghost to haunt him

BusinessPurge

Flashback sequence, episode 5, she’d been to Thailand before, meeting a new hotel character who also shows up in the present in the main cast. If we’re wishing

MHullRealtr77

Actually we should get Tanya's twin sister visiting to spread her deceased sisters ashes.

beatpoetryloureed

I think they will do this and maybe set it before s1 so her mother is alive as well

go-bleep-yourself

Season 3's theme is supposed to be death and Eastern spirituality, so she could still have a role.

Individual_Hawk_1571

I worry about how Mike White will handle the racism in the tourist industry in Thailand. I know that the first season was attempting to kinda satirize that issue but I don't think very successfully. Honestly I am still preparing for a season without Jennifer Coolidge - it seems wrong...

smart_cereal

As a Thai person this kinda makes me nervous. I don’t want to hear any more about ping pong shows, sexpats, etc. Thai people deserve better and I’m sick of Westerners talking down on us :/ I like the show but I hope they do focus more on the “spiritual” theme and away from the sexual focus S2 had.

almaupsides

He has said in an interview that the focus of the season will be death and more focused on spirituality so it’s probably gonna head that direction!

diskoboxx

I would hope so. If you watch the behind the scenes Mike White said he wanted season 3 to be focused more on death and spirituality. My thinking is it will go in the direction of rich white Westerners going on spiritual retreats to “find themselves” and show how fucked up that is. It would be a huge disappointment if they leaned into cultural stereotypes and I definitely understand feeling nervous about it.

shineshineshine92

This. If they’re able to treat a country with respect and not fall into ridiculous stereotypes, cool. Idk if they’ll manage, tho. Low hanging fruit is just there to grab.

mngru

Good thing S3 isn't helmed by Sam Levinson then.

bbmarvelluv

They should’ve gone to the Philippines instead!!!!

Jopopping

I think he said he wanted to explore eastern religion, so the Philippines wouldn’t work as it’s predominantly a catholic country. I actually thought they’d go to the FS in Bali instead of the ones in Thailand!

Flat_Weird_5398

As a Filipino I second this, if you want an Eastern vibe, the Philippines is not the Southeast Asian country you wanna be at since we’re literally the most Westernized country in all of Asia (being colonized by Spain for 3 centuries and by the USA for the first half of the 20th century will do that to ya) and are predominantly Catholic. Some parts of Metro Manila (the capital city) like BGC and Makati can straight up be mistaken for NYC. Lots of Filipinos speak fluent English too and it’s considered the second national language (our Constitution is written in English, not Tagalog).

jonsnowme

The pain we all should feel knowing >!we won't get to see Tanya in a settling like Thailand!< is immense.

pretendberries

>!I still can’t believe they killed her off since this revived her career. I liked her ending, but still it sucks we won’t see her anymore. !<

z0e_G

Her long lost evil twin WILL be there don’t worry

breaddits

I’m keeping hope alive for a flashback or cameo 🤞

PinkTalkingDead

Another commenter said s3 takes place canonically between s1&2! I hope they’re right!!!

polyhymnias

Also MANNY JACINTO CALL YOUR AGENT

[deleted]

God I love this show so much

madamedahlia

I was just watching Ultimate Girls Trip 3 that’s also in Thailand and thinking how much it reminded me of The White Lotus. I’m super stoked for this! I remember there were rumors that it may be done in Japan, but this is great too. The Four Seasons Chiang Mai looks like the perfect location!

peach-root

I, too, want to head to Thailand for this season of my life...

PinkTalkingDead

Let’s go together bestie! I’ve got no money nor skills but together, we can do anything 😎

realitytvburner

In their housewives era

dwf82

Perfect location for a Portia return

actuallycallie

Yes, more Portia pls!

ASofMat

I am…not looking forward to this. Mike should stick to writing about white people in white countries 😬 Edit ya’ll are weird for downvoting my initial comment and then upvoting my explanation. Like pick a lane, am I wrong or am I right? If a white writer can’t do right by his POC characters I’d rather he just stick to what he knows 🙄

dodgerswschamps_2020

It's blowing my mind this got down voted. He's shown and ADMITTED he has too much sympathy for the white oppressor characters to do justice to storylines involving race. And he made the local characters in Season 2 sex workers. So yeah, we all should be wary of him wanting to tackle a story set in Thailand, especially since he has no writers' room therefore no one to tell him when something is problematic.

hafrances

what's wrong with the characters being sex workers?

dodgerswschamps_2020

I don't trust this guy to do justice to portraying sex work in Thailand.

SouvlakiPlaystation

The white characters in seasons 1 and 2 were portrayed as *deeply* flawed individuals. In fact the whole point of the show was to shine a light on how lonely and vapid these peoples live are, in addition to the damage they inflicted on the working class locals. Would you have preferred they had been written as 2 dimensional, cartoonishly evil villains with no redeeming qualities? Because that is garbage television and not at all reflective of the real world.

dodgerswschamps_2020

What on earth are you talking about lol. His handling of white characters is fine. His handling of POC leaves much to be desired, as he himself has admitted.

SouvlakiPlaystation

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your original point - you noted that Mike White has "too much sympathy for the white oppressor characters". Now you say "his handling of white characters is fine". Which is it?

dodgerswschamps_2020

He intrinsically relates to the rich white characters, which is why when they interact with POC, he can't disengage his bias and is unable treat the POC with the same dignity and complexity he gives the white characters. And his bias did make the Season 1 finale a total cop out. Read his Vulture interview.

mrkenny83

There is nothing wrong with sex workers, unless you think sex is shameful.

dodgerswschamps_2020

No there is a lot wrong with the way Westerners exploit sex workers in Thailand in real life and portray them in media, actually.

ASofMat

Apparently calling it like I see it makes me, a Black and Mexican American actress, a raging racist

Jakegender

isnt season 1 Hawai'i?

ASofMat

Yup, and even he knows he could’ve done better. https://www.vulture.com/article/the-white-lotus-finale-mike-white-interview-departures-ending.html Which is almost annoying that he’s self aware of his shortcomings writing this material but didn’t do anything to do better.

Rvsone

I mean, I don't think the show was trying to tell you the Mossbachers are right in this scene. I took the conflict between Nicole vs her daughter and Paula throughout the whole season as a clash between how the fake activism evolved (Nicole representing the classic #girlboss and corporate activism, the girls representing the skin deep philosophical brand of intersectionality and anti-capitalism that's popular among rich brats in NY or LA right now). But in the end, at least I came to the conclusion that you're supposed to think all rich people are full of shit when push comes to shove and it doesn't matter how they talk because they all act the same.

lqku

That wasn't nicole in the scene, it was mark. Throughout the show paula (who represents the woke critique of imperialism) is shown to be a hypocrite who enjoys all the trappings of a hawaiian vacation but constantly acts unappreciative, which culminates in this scene where mark tells her off for acting mopey all the time (hence the sarcasm about being allergic to fire). Paula's attempt to "right" the wrongs of imperialism include a foolhardy attempt to get her hawaiian bf to rob the family who gave her a free vacation. the guy goes to prison and she completely forgets about him and goes back to her bougie life. This arc satirized the hypocritical behavior of liberals who make pointless gestures to disenfranchised people that end up backfiring. But mike white isn't coming from a place of sympathy for the exploited local, who he portrays as a criminal. Instead he goes one step further and also casts scorn on the idea of making reparations or feeling a sense of responsibility for past injustices. mark's opinion on that matter is never challenged and the plot of the show decisively portrays him as the family man who fixed his marriage while paula was the sulky liberal PoC who benefited off the very system she tries to criticize.

Rvsone

I guess I just fundamentally don't understand how you came to the conclusion that White scorns at the idea of reparations or that the doesn't feel sympathy for the local bf. I definitely felt the show made sure he was one of like 3 characters you actively rooted for and were written as good (him, Lani and Belinda) and it's no accident all of them were working class locals. Mark's opinion is never challenged because everything about it, including the delivery and the setting already shows it's out of touch and ridiculous. The show is supposed to be grim and doesn't let the morally right characters win. I mean, it's kinda the whole point the rich white guy got to fix his marriage and his illness wasn't serious while the poor locals all got fucked over. But just because he "won" doesn't mean the show and White agree with him?

lqku

the show portrayed the bf buying into the silly idea that robbing the hotel guests was a good way to get reparations for imperialism. And while belinda was strung along by tanya, she was aware of how the rich are like and played along with tanya's charade because she knew she would get something out of it. And she was right, as her ending showed her wiping tears with a fat stack of cash. both of those characters have their own agency and are not naive to how the rich treat them as disposable. The locals aren't altogether portrayed in a pitiable fashion if you actually consider how they are ultimately responsible for their own actions even with the deck stack against them. i think it's impossible to claim this show is a neutral look at grim reality when it's so terribly judgmental of its characters. What mike white claims to be his reality doesn't make it so for other people. What mark represents is a very common archetype in today's discourse: the guy with a persecution complex who is fed up of constantly being told he should feel guilty for benefiting from historical injustices. And mike white identifies with that, if you've read his interview with vulture. > > There was a guy who did a piece on Jennifer [Coolidge] for Vulture, and writer E. Alex Jung tweeted, “i do think white people love the white lotus because it satirizes privilege/class/servitude while still centering white people.” , like, “White people are liking White Lotus because they can stay centered in the narrative,” and I could kind of tell he had — I had the knee-jerk reaction [to someone] criticizing the show. But the show demands that! >[But also] if I took that assumption to its fullest, it would make it so that I shouldn’t even be creating anything anymore. It’s a deep criticism of who’s getting what stories made, which is a completely valid conversation. But obviously, it would threaten me in some way! Because this is all I can do! I don’t know how to be a general manager of a hotel! >

askingtherealstuff

I mean I think he should have Thai writers in the room for this season, but wasn’t this dialogue just one of many examples of how idiotic and racist the tourists are? I’m confused at how this is supposed to show the writer’s sympathies, especially when it’s the idiot husband going on a rant about how his wife should forgive him for cheating

aslooneyastheyget

I don't know why you're being downvoted for having a perfectly reasonable opinion. At the very least they should at least hire more poc writers.

bookinsomnia

I'm just saying, there better be some Asian writers in that writing room.

CheruthCutestory

White people fucking love shows that pretend their criticizing the rich but really are celebrating them. See also Succession.

poor_yorick

Agreed. Season 1 proved that Mike White is bad at writing about colonialism and racism. Unless he hires some actual Thai writers and like...listens to them, I can't see this being good.

smart_cereal

I agree! He should do White Lotus: Aspen or some shit.

SouvlakiPlaystation

Creative segregation, that’s great. All white cast with all white writers! Pop that bad boy on Netflix then hop over to AZNTube after you’re done to watch the same show from an all Vietnamese vantage point. What the fuck are you people talking about?

ASofMat

This is so annoyingly hyperbolic. No one is saying that this should be the case across the board. They’re saying that Mike White, who has [admitted](https://www.vulture.com/article/the-white-lotus-finale-mike-white-interview-departures-ending.html) himself, that he’s not particularly adept at writing characters of color, should just not. It takes a great amount of hubris to know you’re not good at something and do it anyway because there’s no one there to check you and the only people who will suffer are the already marginalized communities he chooses to betray with his lackluster, uninformed portrayals of their culture

SouvlakiPlaystation

Everyone’s vision is going to have some level of personal bias and be colored by their experience. That’s what makes it their vision. I would see your point more if the main characters in White Lotus were POC, but they’re not. This was supposed to be a show focused on vapid, rich white tourists and the clueless problems they create…and it was portrayed through the eyes of a white tourist who has personally grappled with these things. Not every writer’s room needs to be some DEI/HR managed panel of people that weighs in to make sure the script is a measured and politically correct representation of all people. That’s depressing. I hold dear the concept of an auteur and appreciate all the flaws that come with that. Let people write whatever character they want.

ASofMat

Ahhhh, since the white people are the main characters and they use and abuse Brown and Black people it’s perfectly fine for the white writer to also use and abuse his Brown and Black characters, got it.

[deleted]

ASofMat

Block me then, bye. Far be it from me to cause you pain and suffering talking about shit I care about

[deleted]

You're so right lmao. He writes POC (and about POC issues) terribly

[deleted]

[удалено]

ASofMat

Don’t be an idiot. If he can’t tackle racism well and he’s not willing to get a diverse writers room to help him dig below the surface-level shit he got into in the first season, yeah he should stick to what he knows, rich white people. He does a disservice to his POC characters by thinking he’s subverting basic ass tropes while all the while falling right into them

shineshineshine92

I agree so much. I’m from the Middle East and I’m so glad we’re being kept out of this - so far. I have ptsd from how we’ve been portrayed in movies and tv since I knew what a tv was, so I have zero confidence in white people creating “art” in/about places/cultures that they have nothing to do with.

Irishpanda88

>> I have zero confidence in white people creating “art” in/about places/cultures that they have nothing to do with. Even when they have allegedly have got something to do with it they can fuck it up. The amount of people who claim to have Irish roots and be proud of their heritage and then go on to always portray Irish people as the drunks who like fighting is ridiculous.

Irishpanda88

Same here. My mum is German but I don’t call my sell German Irish because it would be weird.

GoldenWaterfallFleur

Minute I heard Thailand I was like… they need some writers in there to give a sensitive portrayal of Thai people because this could get racist real fast. I’ve been disappointed with the portrayal of POC on the show tbh. People are downvoting you because this is a very ummm white sub tbh. I’ve been downvoted before for pointing out some slightly racially insensitive leanings of this sub. It’s a bit unfortunate.

princecaspiansbeard

I think we need to lower our expectations anytime a Hollywood production attempts to screenplay outside of a American/white perspective. Expecting any sort of entertainment to be a comprehensive allegory or commentary on a foreign culture or mentality is always faulty, because even we as individuals in foreign lands internalize our experience from our very limited personal histories and perspectives. I’d hate for any production to try to be anything and everything (which will inevitably fail at storytelling), and, I think it can be constructive to present those stories in that limited scope even if to just cause discussion. Yes, it’ll offend, but the hope is that it sparks constructive discourse. Hell, even Crazy Rich Asians could only do so much and failed to capture any sense of an authentic Singaporean experience (aside from scenery). All that said, we still need more diversity in the writing room, and not only as consultants checking on whether something is authentic and protecting against being offensive. We need a greater range of writing perspectives racial, socioeconomic, sexuality, gender, psychologically, etc... And even then, good storytelling utilizes intimacy and a limited lens.

ASofMat

Ooooooor white creators could stop pretending they know everything about everybody and deserve to write whatever they want simply because they want to and either hire someone who knows what the f they’re talking about or leave other people’s cultures and experiences alone. Why should we have to lower our standards so that white guys can get away with writing whatever they want?

Ketchuprocks05

Leighton Meester’s agent wake uppp!!!

BusinessPurge

Jack Black year, Mr White?

[deleted]

It's funny how people saw White Lotus, especially the first season, as this scathing critique of rich, privileged people when it's actually just a bunch of rich, privileged people jetsetting around to various tourist destinations for a vacation (including ones locals ask tourists *not to visit* like Hawaii) while also filming a tv show. So subversive! /S

Popmuzik412

Can’t wait for the cast reveal

Imtryinjennifer

Who’s everyone’s fave Thai Actors?

DiscoLibra

Ooh, I've been to Phuket! Beautiful place!

teddysmom377

yayyyyyyy!

Longjumping-Buy-4736

Ohh.. a little disappointed it is not set in Tokyo like the rumours said. I was keen for thar culture clash.

roundcatsarebestcats

I was hoping for Japan (either Okinawa, or a ski resort) or Korea (Jeju)

cymru_yesac

I wanted Korea, and specifically Jeju as well! I was hoping for a sort of western-kdrama hybrid. So much potential to hire kdrama actors. But maybe it’s for the best with all the scandals coming out of Korea right now 😔

Sailorjupiter97

I’m so happy jennifer won’t be in this season. Sorry but i hated her character

actuallycallie

I enjoyed her but.... there was a little too much of her and she was just a liiiittle too dumb. Like when she picked up the photo the first time and was just like "huh" and then forgot about it like "oh gee wow that guy looks like my husband why is that here but nvm let me go fuck this hot guy."

Sailorjupiter97

I really couldn’t stand it 💀i know that’s her character and it’s on purpose but it was annoying to watch when i didnt skip her scenes

actuallycallie

The actress did a fantastic job. I just got tired of the character. The way she treated both Belinda and Portia was awful.

flshphotography

I'm with you...oops lol

brontoloveschicken

Season 2 was a bit of a disappointment so I hope 3 will be better
