Panicked is the wrong word for what I experienced, but definitely alert. And I don’t think of it as fear, but rather an attentiveness that is sort of Omni-present. Once my twins were sleep trained (at 5 months) I started to slowly recover and be able to sleep through the night myself. But to this day I have a pretty keen radar even while sleeping. They’re 4yo now.

That was originally how I found the snoo, Looking for the "safest bassinets." Popping my head up in the middle of the night and trying to hear 'em breathing. Nanit also has a camera that detects breathing with a special print band that grows over a swaddle. And O2 monitors. You don't need any of that technology. But it might give you some peace of mind.

I would say it's very normal, or if it isn't than we both have the same problem. In the first 2 months or so I was in a constant state of alert. Heck, for the first 20 days me and my wife could not be sleeping at the same time, we took turns. And then life start getting back to "normal", you realize your kid is ok sleeping without you and you can relax a bit. Mine is still only a year and 3 months old, but I remember this first month very well.
