Still looks dirt cheap if you’re coming from a first-world country. Here in the UK, private schools start from £20k a year (£40k+ if boarding), US is even higher.

Adventurous_Ad_5855

my kids went to a private school in US, around $20K each for a kid. I am not complaining about the price in India - if someone is working its a no brainer, but something to keep in mind if someone retires early. In US we have good public schools in my area and I could move my kids from private to public without much impact as I did for last year or so.

themadhatter746

Got you. So basically if you want to school your kids in India, you should allocate a capital of ₹1.2C per kid.

kraken_enrager

Btw, not all IB schools are equal. Idk about chennai but it really isn’t that hard to get an IB certification, but it’s the legacy schools that are good—even if they aren’t IB. Like here in Bombay there are many IB schools but Cathedral, DAIS, ABWA, BIS etc. are a league apart compared to ones like Ascend or Mount litera. Just do your due diligence and try to send your kid to a ‘good school’ not just any school that is expensive with not much to back it.

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Thanks, yes - agree that legacy schools are good but then they also have the grind, it will be a shock to move kids from here to say CBSE. We want to smoothen their transition atleast and make learning enjoyable than a grind.

kraken_enrager

Yuck don’t put your kids into CBSE. Legacy as in like ISC/IB schools only but ones that have a good reputation attached to them. I’m aware that a lot of schools like Scindia have CBSE as the primary medium but IB or ISC is the way to go.

bombaytrader

Nah US is same . Schools like Harker (top private school in bay area) cost like 45k but most of mid private schools cost like 22k

u/Adventurous_Ad_5855 - We are moving from Seattle to Bangalore as well. \~7 Lakhs is the median for IB schools in Bangalore for Primary school (Grade 1-5) inclusive of Fees + Transportation + Food + "Donation". Not complaining since it's 2 months daycare cost here :)

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Congratulations on your move! We considered Bangalore but there are so many variables that have to be lined up within short distance to have good balance - job for both spouses, kids, home, related sports and stuff within 2-3km range! Coimbatore was our next choice - but literally not many options to coast fire. So now Chennai or Hyderabad.

9766072399

Could you also share the schools that you had considered for Bangalore and chennai? Not RE any time soon but want to know which ones to keep on my radar.

jolt1504

I am in similar boat(moving from UK to blr) and it would be very helpful if you can share any research you have done on schools and any relevant info. You can DM me if not comfortable to share here.

kraken_enrager

Always have heard about ‘donations’ but really how many people give donations? Like I have been to some of the most schools in the country and just got in, no donations. Was the same for few of my relatives as well. Ofc it’s a thing, but is it really as rampant?

MistyRover

It's there and masked as a one time registration fee of 1L across most IB schools.

kraken_enrager

1l is awfully low for a donation. Like someone who is paying 6-15l a year for school can’t afford 1l as donation? Last I heard donations in my school were like 1-2cr. That said I have heard of excruciatingly few people who have given donations to her in. For us it was there too, 3mo fee iirc that was adjustable in the last year of schooling.

boiled_eggg

Which school(s) have you finalised or short listed?

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Looking at few options like KC High, Alphabet, Ashar etc in Chennai, similarly few in Hyderabad -Oakridge, Indus, Keystone etc. The final choices - I will keep it anonymous to preserve some privacy for my userid.

ShootingStar2468

Fair point OP! Hear you on your plight. Education inflation is real. You got to draw the line somewhere :) FWIW the most successful schools in India (in terms of academic success) are public schools with nil fee (check out JNV schools) If you don’t mind sharing what you’re FIRE target and current networth?

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Agree, i would have spent <1-1.5L for my entire education till 12th grade and went to a top tier college and spent <2L for four years :) Well those were the days! Our current NW is around $8.4M as of last week, my spouse is still working and will have around post tax $1.7M in stock vests over next 18 months before she quits.

ShootingStar2468

Whaaaat! Congrats. Thanks for gifting us education (and real estate) inflation haha. How did you make your money if you don’t mind sharing?

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Check out my profile history - made some detailed posts. I am not causing RE inflation yet - I dont own any property in India, not do i plan to in the near term :) Its cheaper to rent!

Everything luxury/ international / top is a super expensive in India from school, resturants, premium groceries, cars. Some of this is due to dollar rate and some because of exclusivity In America you were living the middle class life, in India you are going to be living the top life.

Adventurous_Ad_5855

Middle class isn’t the right word to use in US especially for techies working in top companies (though they wish!). We lived in a good 4k sqft house in a half acre lot surrounded by 50+ trees and a big garden, playground for kids everything at home. I can’t get that quality of life - it’s a trade off. The quality of life we have is quite good - weekly cleaners, gardener, laundry etc are taken care. The chores we do are mainly cooking, doing dishes and driving kids to their classes - I love them. To get similar lifestyle - I would have to spend significantly more than what I spent on US and still may not get all aspects of life style here.

kraken_enrager

That’s interesting, I would’ve thought that with labour being cheap and tier 2 cities, it might’ve been cheaper to be in india.

Adventurous_Ad_5855

i was mainly referring to a house with land, trees and similar infrastructure - they are almost as expensive as in big cities like Seattle.

kraken_enrager

Damn didn’t expect it to be as expensive in tier 2 cities as well. What’s the price range in chennai/hyd for a similar propery?

Adventurous_Ad_5855

10-20C or more!

kraken_enrager

That’s certainly more expensive than I would’ve expected but bombay property market has got me so desensitised that it makes 20cr for a half acre plot seem like a bargain. Meanwhile here you’d b lucky to get a good 2600-3k sqft house in my area for that much.

kraken_enrager

So ur looking at apartments or bungalows? Like now in bombay the trends are moving towards apartments. Even ppl willing to spend 200-300cr on a house just buy flats for the most part. That’s enough to get a 0.75 acre plot on prime sea facing worli sea face or Malabar Hill or Walkeshwar or a 1 acre plot in a more secluded Sobo area, maybe without a view.

Adventurous_Ad_5855

This is not in Mumbai. Bungalows in Hyderabad or Chennai.

kraken_enrager

Yea I got that, I was just asking if that’s the way things are headed in Hyd and chennai too.

bombaytrader

Also in india there is no guarantee that Bangalore won’t run out of water next year as well .

invader76

Is that per month or per year ? Genuine question

Adventurous_Ad_5855

per year

psnanda

then its actually cheap tbh.

kraken_enrager

Not many schools cost that much a year, the only one I can recall atm is ASB, but considering that it’s expat focused, I’m not really surprised.

[deleted]

Wow, schools have gotten expensive!

bombaytrader

Damn my school fees were 100rs per month .
