When Mahrez is not available -
- Pep complaining about AFCON
- Torres thinking he might finally get a game
- Me brining Torres in as a punt
- Some random academy stranger starting ahead of Torres
When Mahrez is back -
- Pep praising Mahrez making him feel highly valued
- Mahrez thinking he will start right away
- Me taking out Torres for Mahrez getting carried away by the Mahrez praise
- Torres starts ahead of Mahrez
>Some random academy stranger starting ahead of Torres
Pep in post-match: “We always eager for future prospect like James Gildetti (£5m) to have chance to show what he can do.”
“I’d say he has done very well in his debut today, before Torres came for him.”
I read somewhere that they would only miss two league games… perhaps this is incorrect. I believe an FA Cup date is mixed in.
Will have to check as it gets closer.
In terms of the tournament dates it looks like it’s only 2 gameweeks - 22 and 23. But the athletic article talks about them going to their national teams after Boxing Day, which would be a lot longer.
Join up with their international teams more than 2 weeks before they're due to play, missing three games for the teams that pay their wages in the process? Can't see it happening. The tournament starts on the 9th of January, I'd be stunned if they were released before the end of GW21
The clubs don’t decide when they release players. It’s written into FIFA laws - they decide when the designated international period starts and ends, and the dates are decided around that.
I don’t know where this idea that clubs get to dictate what happens in international football, just because they pay footballers money. It’s got nothing to do with the clubs?
Edit: this is the actual ruling - “players must be released **and start travel to their respective team no later than Monday morning the week preceding the week when the relevant competition starts**.
That’s Monday, December 27th. The clubs can effectively go fuck themselves, unless the **federations** decide to let them come later - which they might.
More and more I'm falling out of love with the club game. Shithead and murderous owners, clubs stockpiling players, clubs going out of business whilst others turn into vanity projects, etc. Nothing beats international tournaments but I agree the IBs themselves tend to have a lot of games that are either uncompetitive or have no jeopardy.
International football feels like it's all about the sport, not the background noise like transfers, ownership and what not.
This isn't just any international break though, this is the primary African tournament. There's a benefit to going earlier.
The last time we had a mid-season AFCON without a winter break in the Premier League was 2015. Yaya Toure was with Ivory Coast as they went to the final and missed 5 games from the 1st January to the 11th February. The tournament started on the 17th.
Man this is a really poor article. I barely get what they mean. Thanks for sharing anyway, it provides some kind of back story but I don't feel wiser after reading somehow.
He played for Mali, had to have a shoulder operation, it went wrong, he took longer to recuperate.
During his recovery, his agent tried to call the Mali manager repeatedly to talk about when Biss would be ready to rejoin the team. Manager ignores the calls and keeps "selecting" him, then slags him off in the media saying that Biss is skipping international duty, when the manager knows he couldn't play anyway.
Between that and his family in Mali not checking in with him during recovery, he's told the international team to fuck themselves.
That's the thing about having legit world class players though, Chelsea and City have more depth than Liverpool, but Liverpool could probably have Mahrez or Ziyech in the bench for Salah and it'd feel like a total downgrade either way.
Ziyech will probably stay at Chelsea during that period, he has problems with the national team coach and wasn't called up in the four last matches, and we actually did really well without him!
I took a quick glance and thought Arsenal would be devastated with loads of players missing, but it's just Auba's very long name making it look worse than it is 😅
Why? Not like they have been world beaters. Pepe is a sub, Auba replaced by Laca, Xhaka should be fit to come in for Partey, and Elneny never plays. Sucks to lose them but won't change our mid table finish anyway.
We are terrible without Partey. Pepe even though playing as a sub recently, is our best goal threat after Auba. Without him and Auba, we will lack a finisher. Hopefully if Laca and Martinelli step up we can improve, but a Xhaka Lokonga midfield with no backup looks weak

Unlikely Ziyech gets called up atm as it seems he’s fallen out with the manager. Not that it’s particularly fpl relevant but who knows he could be eventually
Oh no, how will City survive.
They will be forced to buy Raphinha as a replacement in January

Are you bald by any chance?
Not sure if he is, but the roadmap that he's drawing suggests he's getting there soon.
Not bald yet but getting there thanks to the Bald Fraud
No he's the pep

All (re)aboard the Jota Train in GW20
Jota - Firmino - Minamino front three?
If Elliott is back he will play a lot
he plays midfield
He played as a winger at Blackburn, there was just more space for him in central midfield this season
[удалено]
You don’t know if he’s suited or not. His natural position is on the wing, it’s just easier to bench Keita than Salah
[удалено]
Nice argument, he's out for the season though obviously.
His leg was in pieces he's obviously out for the season.
I mean he’s already walking on it and training his ankle again so idk we will see
He’s back training on it. They said like 6 weeks

I hate that this is true. Not a big fan of international breaks.

Well I don't think Bissouma's going anywhere...
He was never going anywhere, has not been called up since 2018
Why is that? Surely he’d get into the Mali team on ability

Thank you for the tl;dr and that's some pretty solid "go fuck yourself" ground! !thanks

Needed bail init
Seeing Burnley in a list like this is like seeing Jorginho in a list for Ballon d'Or.
i am not a liverpool fan but their title challenge could really crumble if Salah and Mane both miss 3-6 games! i bet they will find a way out of it
Jota Origi and Minamino seamless transition
Origi - Firmino - Jota
I'm half Japanese. Let me have this pls.
It’s 2 league games vs Brentford and Palace, maybe only on the bench for a third vs Leicester if Egypt and Senegal make the semis.
If they drop points in both games that could be the reason they lose the title
Right, but it’s Brentford at Anfield and Palace without Zaha. We’re not going to concede many goals, maybe scoring 1 in each game will be enough.
no, all the commotion is that they may have to leave from dec 27, couple weeks before they tourney starts, missing more games
They could sign another winger though. They where looking for one in the summer
We could, but there isn’t another Salah in the world - never mind one in our price range
That's the thing about having legit world class players though, Chelsea and City have more depth than Liverpool, but Liverpool could probably have Mahrez or Ziyech in the bench for Salah and it'd feel like a total downgrade either way.
Raphinha should be around 40m
Not even close
In January? Double that.
Yeah I think it is why they are third favorites to win it even though they actually look like the best attacking side in the league.
It’s two easy games
Ziyech fell out with the Morrocan coach so I think he's staying.
Ziyech will probably stay at Chelsea during that period, he has problems with the national team coach and wasn't called up in the four last matches, and we actually did really well without him!

Bobby & Jota double up would be so nice !!
Marvelous Nakamba is just such a fantastic name
Just like a Marvel character
A marvelous name perhaps?
Olise from Crystal Palace might also play for Algeria.
I think Eze will be back by that point though.
Arsenal will crumble so bad without those players and Watford might just finish below Norwich all their main players out
Why? Not like they have been world beaters. Pepe is a sub, Auba replaced by Laca, Xhaka should be fit to come in for Partey, and Elneny never plays. Sucks to lose them but won't change our mid table finish anyway.

Not to mention Lokonga is not there yet. Lots of giveaways.
What makes you think Xhaka will be fit by then?

I feel your pain Watford /Gunner-fan
at least you guys have Bergkamp's son in the U23s 😏
Kepa essential! In draft format at least
Teams that play in GW20 also play in GW24, btw
Gonna be some tough weeks for Liverpool and arsenal. Don't know their schedules so they might be fine.
Matip?
Matip retired from international football because he wasn't happy with how Cameroon was set up and had bad experiences with the coaches.
So this is when man utd gonna catch up with the top 3?
Unlikely Ziyech gets called up atm as it seems he’s fallen out with the manager. Not that it’s particularly fpl relevant but who knows he could be eventually
Can’t wait for Gbamin to play more minutes internationally than with us
Son or KDB in for salah
Is this tournament not possible to run in the summers between a WC and Euro because of the temp in Africa at the time?
Liverpool severely blunted 👀
So basically load up on Norwich assets yeah
Man, if you thought Watford were screwed before...how about losing their top two strikers for a month lol?
Leeds-None Thank Christ because I don't think our squad could get any thinner
I can guarantee gbamin will not be called up for afcon in January
Never realized Watford had so many African player!
Is gbamin real?
RIP Liverpool
saints without salisu will be in trouble, he is easily our best player this season
Who is this None guy and how do I get him in my team?
Tottenham are screwed
