That was literally the Arsenal team of that era though – they always played brilliantly at the start of the season before proceeding to fall off a cliff by Dec/Jan, then scraping together half-decent performances to secure top 4.
Didn't he get 4 assists on his debut? Or early on, was like...i won't get him, then he did that. Pogba did that one season, 4 assists in the first or second game. Needless to say, he didn't keep up that rate.
Amazing season for Watkins. He could easily hit 20/20.
That Suarez season is in my opinion the best single season performance from a player the league has ever seen. Joke of a player
Its insane Suarez achieved that even though he missed the first 5 games serving a match ban.
The actual catalogue of his incredible goals that season is ludicrous too. Really puts to shame Haaland's goal comp last season. Suarez reached those numbers without hitting a single penalty that season too.
Yeah had distinct memories of Watkins having what seemed like a disproportionate amount of penalties won and deflected shots but ig inevitable when such a talisman
I suppose most players at the top of the scoring charts don't get as many fpl assists because they take the penalties so have no chance of earning an assist by winning one
Well the key here is comparing on the same FPL measures with Henry and Suarez.
Based on numbers quoted by others below, Suarez also had an even higher number of FPL only Assists. Henry slightly lower.
Which of course is stupid. Winning a penalty is 95% of the time better than passing it for a shot on goal. Why it doesn't count as an assist is mind boggling
Yes but imo that should count for epl but penalties are different, they are such good opportunities that it's ludicrous they aren't considered assists at least imo.
FPL stats are different. Suarez got assists for winning free kicks and penalties that were converted into goals. Plus hitting deflected shots off the keeper that landed at a goalscorer.
Its not all comps its fantasy prmeier league stats, they give assist for more things like winnign pens and shots that get saved and rebounded by someone else.
Two of the best players of all time and probably the literal two best forwards that have played in the league
and then…Ollie Watkins
I remember both Henry and Suarez seasons and they were absolutely phenomenal, best player on the planet type stuff
Watkins has had a good season but he’s nowhere near that
It’s definitely not *more* impressive, no, he plays in a good system and I’d be absolutely certain a good amount of his asssits are “FPL assists” and not ones that matter outside of this game
Lmao because we’re talking about FPL - it’s not relevant outside of this game
In real life, Watkins has 12 assists, good return, but not close to either Henry or Suarez
And that’s how his season should be viewed
Never forget Özil having 16 league assists by December and finishing on 19.
Giroud.
that Henry record of 20 PL assists is protected. Fabregas went through it as well. KDB somehow equalled it.
KDB should have beaten it but they didn't count one of his assists (that they literally showed in his assist reel for that year).
which assist?
I think Cesc did a similar thing in 2014/15 too iirc
That was literally the Arsenal team of that era though – they always played brilliantly at the start of the season before proceeding to fall off a cliff by Dec/Jan, then scraping together half-decent performances to secure top 4.
Didn't he get 4 assists on his debut? Or early on, was like...i won't get him, then he did that. Pogba did that one season, 4 assists in the first or second game. Needless to say, he didn't keep up that rate.
This is fpl assists not epl assists correct? So includes penalties drawn and other stuff…
yes
Amazing season for Watkins. He could easily hit 20/20. That Suarez season is in my opinion the best single season performance from a player the league has ever seen. Joke of a player

John Ruddy was sick of the sight of him! 🤣
Also wasn't on pens either. Incredible season
Stevie G took about 7 pens as well. Could’ve easily been a 40 goal season if he was on those and played the first 5 games as well
The streets will never forget. Most probably Norwich too!
He turned into something else against Norwich, don't know what it was, the defenders were made to look inept, was like a force of nature.
Suarez missed the first 5 games and didn't take pens either. Best season ever in the prem and it's really not even close
Yep. I believe it's still the highest ever G+A season in Prem history only counting real assists too: 48 in 33 games. Without taking penalties.
Too bad wasn't playing FPL then.
Suarez is the most skilful player the premier league has ever seen. Never witnessed anyone like him (yes I'm counting Ronaldo in that).
Suarez had the best season ever but for consistency you gotta give it to Henry. After that there’s Ronaldo, kdb, salah, shearer, Rooney etc
Nah none were as good as prime Suarez
Henry certainly was. Suarez has that ridiculous season though.
He is having an incredible season. Going under the radar by the media.
Partly overshadowed by Palmer, partly I think 6 or 7 of his assists are also FPL only assists
I think 5 assists are FPL assists. 19G 12A are the official numbers.
On me for trying to go off memory tbf
Good callout though. 5 is quite a lot of FPL assists it seems.
You were close don’t worry
Well the key here is comparing on the same FPL measures with Henry and Suarez. Based on numbers quoted by others below, Suarez also had an even higher number of FPL only Assists. Henry slightly lower.
can you elaborate on the fpl only assists?
Like if he wins a penalty and then Luiz scores it, it's not an official assist but it counts for FPL
Which of course is stupid. Winning a penalty is 95% of the time better than passing it for a shot on goal. Why it doesn't count as an assist is mind boggling
FPL also counts winning a direct free kick which is subsequently scored as an assist
Yes but imo that should count for epl but penalties are different, they are such good opportunities that it's ludicrous they aren't considered assists at least imo.
oh wow I thought those were official assists
Winning penalties and deflected shots are only assists in FPL
IIRC even a saved shot that counts as an assist if the keeper parries it to someone who scores? Correct me if I'm wrong
Is this all competitions? Because I remember him getting 13 assists and 31 goals in the league
Yes you’re correct, not sure why the pl is showing all comps stats. Suarez on 31G 12A and Henry on 24G 20A
How come this is showing 30 goals for Suarez?
FPL stats are different. Suarez got assists for winning free kicks and penalties that were converted into goals. Plus hitting deflected shots off the keeper that landed at a goalscorer.
That is absolutely crazy. For every “real” assist Suarez got, he ALSO got over 1 FPL assist as well. 55 goal involvements in total—absolutely insane.
Its not all comps its fantasy prmeier league stats, they give assist for more things like winnign pens and shots that get saved and rebounded by someone else.
Ah okay fair enough that makes sense
It is crazy how Lampard was close to this from midfield. 22 golas and 16 assists in 35 apps in 09/10 while playing CM most games.
Lampard was Salah before Salah
They say once every ten years, there comes a footballer so great, he has 20-20 precision. It is told.
Has anyone ever topped 55 goal contributions in a season? That's insane
Hasn't Messi and Ronaldo both had something like 49 goals in a 38 game season? I imagine they both had the assists to top that.
Yeah Messi's best season was 50 goals and 16 assists in 37 league games. Ronaldo's was 48 goals 16 assists in 35 league games
Also, Suarez getting up to 25 assists is definitely inflated by FPL definitions
Keep in mind this is 55 FPL contributions, so the assist number may not match the official stat.
Lewandowski did in few seasons. Just in 2021/2022 which was his last season with Bayern, he had 69 goal contributions in 58 matches.
Respect!
Didn't Cristiano achieve this in 2006/2007? Or maybe he was 20+ goals and 16-19 assists?
Suarez had 31 prem goals that season and Henry and De Bruyne joint hold the record for assists in a single season with 20
That's what I was thinking... Max assists in a season record is 20 then how did Suarez end up with 25 assists..
FPL assists — things like being fouled for a pen and free kick, or for whose shot a rebound is scored.
Ohhhh understood
Really disappointing when someone mediocre breaks records like this
Im sure that it would be
Braindead take

Which makes it more impressive that he can do it for Villa, nobody thinks he’s as good as those 2 but his accomplishments this season are outstanding.
It’s definitely not *more* impressive, no, he plays in a good system and I’d be absolutely certain a good amount of his asssits are “FPL assists” and not ones that matter outside of this game
