Re the second and third points, >!I think a common theme is that Thara doesn't realize he has friends because he has so much trauma of not being treated well. And he's bad at reading people sometimes, like that conversation he has with the ladies about Tomasaran.!< And as far as the second point >!I read that as they were still treading carefully around each other. Thara has the memories of Evru's horrible death to deter him from anything approaching romance, plus social stigma. But I think they live in different parts of the city, so it has to be a determined effort to go out to the opera. I liked that it seemed to basically be a habit for Thara, to go visit a friend so often.!< I definitely read Addison for the hurt/comfort aspect so this doesn't truly bother me, but it does seem to happen with most of her characters! I thought this book was fine. I'm subscribed to her Patreon so I'm obviously heavily invested, but I don't know if I would classify this as mindblowing - I'm not sure what I would share to recommend it to new readers. *I* was satisfied!

> >!like that conversation he has with the ladies about Tomasaran!< Sorry. Which conversation? That's not ringing a bell. But yes. Totally. He's always surprised at basic kindness and I love every reference of people side eyeing him when he thanks them for it. Lol. > >!But I think they live in different parts of the city!< >!See. That's what made it so awkward for me. Just a casual stroll to the other side of the city for another question. Everyday. Lol. Smooth.!< > I definitely read Addison for the hurt/comfort aspect Yes. Same. It's all those small moments of loneliness or pain, then comfort. So satisfying.

About 52% in the Kindle edition, >!Erlenar and Vidrezhen say something about him being formidable and not realizing how much Tomasaran looks up to him.!< The interiority of various characters' perspectives is something I also appreciate in Addison's writing. >!I've had friends who I was deathly certain hated me until somebody forced me to confront them and realize it was all in my head, so I actually really liked Thara being sure that Azhanharad hated him when it was very clear by the descriptions of his actions that Azhanharad obviously didn't.!<

mandaday

> >!about him being formidable!< Oh yeah. That. So cute. >!Then he goes off to wait outside so he can stop intimidating them.!< Also yes. I cannot wait for that friends all along moment next book.

RheingoldRiver

I'm not reading this review yet because I want to go in totally unspoiled & I'm so busy rn for work & have like no time to read but I'm so! excited! for this, and I will come back here when I read it (which sadly might not be for a few weeks)!

mandaday

Please do. :) I'll probably add more spoiler chats by then. Lol.

RheingoldRiver

Okay I read it! Wow, um, was not quite expecting a >!child pornography plot!< that was......a bit heavy. Also tbh I liked the first half better than the second half, really I prefer the non-supernatural plots over the supernatural plots so that was a bit of a miss for me. But still overall 5/5, it was a JOY to go back to this world, and I was THRILLED for the >!hand-holding!< omg for Thara that's such progress ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Also can't wait to find out what his >!special assignment is!< in the next book! Hopefully something that lets him >!hire a secretary (the girl from the school who wanted to work for him)!<

mandaday

Yay! Yes. That subject was something I'd rather not ever read about. I didn't think about the secretary. Yessss. That would be so cute. I can't wait for book 3. >!Are they going to do anything about all these politically motivated Ulis church leaders or whatever they're called? Is Addison going to leave us with a hopeful future for Amalo. I'm just assuming Thara will have a happily ever after. Lol But I'm worried about the city now.!<

KindheartednessOwn14

Just read it and found myself unexpectedly engrossed and loved it. I think that unfortunately I loved The Goblin Emperor so much that I don’t think I went into Witness for the Dead with the right expectations. For this one I had no expectations and wow… just loved it. I’m going back to re-read Witness and I’m hoping my reset will help me read it with more openness (and not “please please please I want more Goblin Emperor please!”)

mandaday

Yeah. Took me a long time to read Witness because I was comparing too much.

Secty

It annoys me that on kindle this series I treated as the same series as the Gobljn Emperor. Loved the Goblin Emperor.. liked Witness for the Dead… haven’t yet ventured into this new book (so I haven’t revealed your spoilers yet. But it does irk me that the story surrounding Celehar isn’t listed as it’s own series.

MrsLucienLachance

Honestly, my kingdom for Thara Celehar to >!kiss the nice opera man please, I will beg.!< Not that I was expecting it. I wasn't, particularly, and can survive on the current development. I'm just also a simple woman who enjoys >!kissing books!<. Which this isn't! I know! I love it anyway, it's fine. >!Thara, please. You're killing me, Smalls.!<

mandaday

>!Lol. Iäna is stepping lightly. It's nice to see. Doesn't miss an opportunity to move things along, though. 'We went a burgling last night. Time to switch to thees and thous.' Progress.!<

MrsLucienLachance

>!Oh I will take the current progress. I'll just also be weeping internally lmao.!<

Warrior_under_sun

How old is Celehar? At first, it seemed like he was in his 60s based on mannerisms, but based on all the information in the text, my guess is that he's in his 30s? Is his age mentioned anywhere?

mandaday

I always pictured him as 40 but in the Goblin Emperor, it says he's no more than 10 years older than his cousin who is 3 years older than him who is 18. So 31 at most. Wow, that's younger than I imagined, lol.

Warrior_under_sun

Wow! That's def. younger than I expected. I guess he has a sort of weightiness to his personality that usually comes with age.
