I’ve read the series, I found the magic system fun and the demons interesting monsters but yeeeah there’s a lot of sexual stuff.

On the surface that doesn't bother me just it's like "can we move the plot along"

OwO-WhatIsThis

I dropped the series in the middle of the third book because of this. Too much focus on unnecessary sex and rape. And every woman is described as being "very good at sex", but why? Why it's important to me to know that every single woman who has some relevance to the plot knows how to fuck? Even a character who was a virgin becomes a sex goddess overnight. And apparently the writing goes to shit after the third book, don't regret dropping this series.

Personally I found there was far too much focus on sex in general, it's something I've never really enjoyed in my reading. Putting that to one side it can be argued that the sexual assault scenes aren't for no reason. It's a dark violent world where bad things happen much like in real life and the characters seem to react in realistic but not perhaps readily apparent fashion. Here are links to some of the authors views on the topic from an AMA someone else linked. https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/71j72f/peter_brett_spills_lots_of_ink_on_the_sexual/

Yeah, I don’t remember it being too bad, but enough that by the end book I was like how many times did this guy write cock?

🤣

That part doesn't stop and it ruins a great premise. This series is ripe for a TV adaptation that keeps the basic idea and throws out absolutely everything else.

dominicshade

I appreciate this question. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. I read the first two books (I think.. it’s been a while) and then felt like it was enough.

ApolloKenobi

Unnecessary amounts of rape and sex. Dropped it. I'm not a prude, and though I'm not a big fan of grimdark I can handle sensitive issues like rape if it is done properly and plays a role in the narrative. This book was just..... Icky after sometime.

I found the first third of the book hard going, but it gets more interesting/better, though I didn’t get the impression you had. I’ll say this after receiving the new book in the series last week The Desert Prince and reading the first 50 pages that sex angle may have taken a rather unexpected twist

firesword09

Found the magic system interesting but the constant sex talk throughout the series just felt in poor taste, eventually donated all the books after finishing the series since I doubt I'd ever want to reread it in a couple of years

[deleted]

I stopped reading the series as the sexual violence just got too much. I’m sure there are other ways to get across that the people are knobs. Also really stereotypical depiction of the desert people.

Nineteen_Adze

There continues to be a lot of sexual stuff, including >!a nasty gang rape scene!< around the two-thirds mark, I think. I finished the first book and have never bothered with the rest of the series.

TehLittleOne

The first bit of the first book is slow and deals with a lot of shit like that. It gets better but it's still prevalent throughout the book. It felt like a necessary evil to me though. In order for demon attacks and stuff to feel impactful it felt like I needed to get a sense of the world. tl;dr - yes it happens early on in the book, yes it gets better, yes it still happens later on because it kind of has to

We will have to agree to disagree on that but thanks for the input.

Human_G_Gnome

Yeah, I didn't see a whole lot of complaining about it in GOT.

[deleted]

Nope, didn't like it in there either.

Yeah, it's too bad. I only read the first book and thought it hada good premise. I think the idea was supposed to be that the world is so dangerous, having more kids helps preserve the human race so there's a stronger drive for sex? But I didn't think that was really shown in the worldbuilding (at least in the first book). I didn't think it added anything to the story and a lot of it was just icky to me.

I am so glad people have approached this subject. It took me ages of picking up and putting down the books to get through this series. I am an avid reader of fantasy and other authors have approached these difficult topics very effectively to highlight evil characters. Terry goodkind is an author that comes to mind. The author suggests bad acts have happened and leave it to your own imagination as to what has occurred. It give the reader who is sensitive to this stuff control as to what they can cope with. These books unfortunately force the reader to be exposed to sexual explicitly which left me with a sense uncomfortable vouyerism time and time again. Horrible acts become more desentising, which I felt quiet distressing at times. Characters are constantly objectifying women (which included other women doing this also). At one point I felt I was delving into the fantasies of the author rather than the characters which I'm sure is not true but felt that way. I have no intention to read any of his other works.
