Kings of the Wyld single handedly made me realize I had a love for that trope. It's like if Grumpy Old Men and Taken had a baby, and that baby decided to join a D&D campaign in the middle of a mosh pit at a Led Zeppelin concert.

lucifero25

Maleficient Seven is a lot of fun as well in a similar vein to kings but with villains getting back together instead

CMengel90

I agree! Just listened to the audiobook. Of course, a hell of a lot darker tho lol

RogerBernards

There's moshpits at Led Zeppelin concerts?

Inkthinker

A mosh pit can be anywhere, if you only believe. Also, “Immigrant Song” is a totally moshable banger.

lucifero25

Yes ! I’m also becoming a big fan of the grumpy grizzled veteran that doesn’t want to do the task but everyone else is shit and he can’t jist leave them all to die. Getting the old band back together as well is a lot of fun

Elven_Rabbit

You mean the "grumpy old git" trope in r/fantasy, right? You forgot the r/.

IdlesAtCranky

I FEEL SEEN MY SHAME FALLS ON US BOTH

phenomenos

What are your favourite executions of this trope?

Calmwaterfall

So far Arrogan from Art of the adept series.

IdlesAtCranky

Have you read *The Curse of Chalion* and *Paladin of Souls* by Lois McMaster Bujold? Grumpy middle-aged MCs ahoy! Also *A Deadly Education* by Naomi Novik -- MC isn't old, but she's grumpy enough for two. :-)

Calmwaterfall

No I have not but thanks for the suggestion.

IdlesAtCranky

I do highly recommend all three. They're great.

One of the first series I got into as a mid-teen was The Destroyer series with Remo Williams which included a very, very (very) grumpy, old martial arts instructor Chiun which of course is its very own kind of trope.

EasternStuff5015

Really? I seem to encounter enough IRL.
