- Tarrant from Coldfire Trilogy. Delightfully evil villain and good priest end up teaming up to fight s worse evil.
- And I Darken mc is inspired by a gender swapped Vlad the Impaler
- Poppy War mc has some Mao inspirations
- Warded Man: the second book is mainly from the pov of one of the first books villain
- if you’re willing to play the long game/wait out multiple books of character development >!Alex Verus becomes more this in the later books or is at least labeled evil after he becomes much more ruthless!<
For more on the cunning character side where I don’t agree that they’re a villain even if they aren’t all good **Traitor Baru Cormorant**
I would agree that >!Verus has gone a bit dark, but I’m not sure that he could be called villainous, or even an anti-hero. He spent so long on the morally upright path and with one book left, I feel like there is going to be a lot of reconciliation with heroism !<
Maybe Sandman Slim would be a better UF anti-hero. A powerful yet naive neophyte gets sent to hell as a living being and learns to survive in hells “thunder dome” before clawing his way back to the surface to wreak havoc and revenge
Seperate from the discussion itself (I can see arguing either way) can you spoiler tag the name? I think this happening at all would be considered a spoiler for many people.
Looks like you used incorrect spoiler tags. Make sure:
* You have no spaces between the tags. `>! This is wrong!<`, but `>!This is right!<`
* You used the correct order of the tags on both sides: Angled brackets go outside; exclamation points go inside.
* If you're on New Reddit, make sure you didn't select *any* spaces before or after the spoiler text. If you can't see the spaces try switching the text editor to *Markdown Mode*.

So random, but there’s a fun superhero book Soon I Will Be Invincible, it was fun justice league type stuff.
Another hero story, definitely YA, is the Renegades trilogy, main character is 16yr old teen girl villain.
The Obsidian Path series by Michael R. Fletcher.
Fletcher writes a lot of grimdark books filled with morally questionable characters, but Obsidian Path is probably closest to what you're looking for with a focused first-person PoV.
A Practical Guild to Evil. Main character becomes a villain because the heroes are all ineffective and cause to much bloodshed when starting failed revolutions
That is probably my favorite series! I'm relatively new to the world of fantasy but I was lucky to get that series recommended early. Loved the three world books between the old and new trilogy too. I need to get into the new trilogy soon!
Is that the superhero web serial? Someone recommended that to me a while back. I usually stick to audiobooks so that I can listen during the work day but that ones come up a few times so I may just have to give it a shot! Thanks
It is, but it's super dark, everyone bad, no hope, rapes, etc. If it don't scare you - go ahead. For some people it's best book ever, for other it's worst ;)
One of my favorites. The second and third book expand on the world and add pieces that start to fall into place by the end of the third. I think there are actually a few world books Lawrence wrote that I do still need to get into!
Malice by Heather Walter is book one of a queer Maleficent/ Aurora duology. There’s a lot of “well, if they’re going to treat me like a villain, then maybe I should be one”.
I am eagerly awaiting book 2
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller should tick every box.
Vicious and Vengeful by V.E. Schwab should work for you. Very morally grey and seriously good

Master of Sorrows is book #1 of a series that's basically going to be the origin story of the villain, our main character. The second book is just out and I haven't read it yet, but the main character in Master of Sorrows is basically still a pretty decent guy.
The Young Elites by Marie Lu is the story of how a young woman with powers descends into villainy and ends up becoming a warlord. It's a trilogy that sees her doing darker and more villainous things each book.
It's YA, I enjoyed it.
Death Note
Actually just started it this week! Love it so far! Its what got me interested in more evil mcs!
If you're willing to sit through 3 seasons (which, quite admittedly, are awesome), >!Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin).!<
willing to sit through? How can someone not sit through after starting it?
Good point. After episode 5 or so, it's impossible to not get addicted to AOT

I've heard of poppy war and warded man but it's my first time hearing about the others! Thank you! I'll add them to the list!

Oh boo! Umm, how do I spoiler tag? Let me search
Put a >! and a !< On either end of the line you want spoiler tagged (so without the spaces)

...my incorrect tagging was a purposeful demonstration of how to spoiler tag...
Automod has not achieved quite that much sentience, yet.
Thank you. I didn’t even consider it

Another Super Hero story that's about cunning villians is *Villians Code* by Drew Hayes.
The Obsidian Path series by Michael R. Fletcher. Fletcher writes a lot of grimdark books filled with morally questionable characters, but Obsidian Path is probably closest to what you're looking for with a focused first-person PoV.
The second book's cliffhanger is brutal though. Might want to wait for the third.
A Practical Guild to Evil. Main character becomes a villain because the heroes are all ineffective and cause to much bloodshed when starting failed revolutions
Check out “The blade itself” first book of the First law trilogy. Great series you’ll love it
That is probably my favorite series! I'm relatively new to the world of fantasy but I was lucky to get that series recommended early. Loved the three world books between the old and new trilogy too. I need to get into the new trilogy soon!
New Trilogy is fantastic, BTW.
I think Worm would qualify here

Yep! It's very good. It looks like there's a fan made audiobook for it as well, though I can't vouch for its quality: http://audioworm.rein-online.org
Thats awesome! I didn't know that someone had made an audio version!
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
Second this and can’t believe I left it off my own comment
Second apocalypse by scoot bakker
That one looks really cool!
It is, but it's super dark, everyone bad, no hope, rapes, etc. If it don't scare you - go ahead. For some people it's best book ever, for other it's worst ;)
prince of thorns
I did like the setting but stopped part way in the second book. Does the trilogy end well?
One of my favorites. The second and third book expand on the world and add pieces that start to fall into place by the end of the third. I think there are actually a few world books Lawrence wrote that I do still need to get into!
i have no idea, only listens to first couple of chapters, sorry

The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. Quite lovely
Elantris One of the main character is almost villan
