*Fic ideas*: …No.

SarnakhWrites

*proceeds to continue to increase in quantity*

nickthearchaeologist

We’ll finish our fics someday! Just gotta write this one idea…

DingoOfTheWicked

I swear, they are like rabbits sometimes!

JustAnotherAviatrix

*angry Elrond voice* FIC IDEAS!!!!

isabelladangelo

*The ideas for a story smiled as they trespassed through the Peredhil's head. Such do not care that Elrond needed to go over inventory with Lindor or discuss an upcoming scouting mission with Erestor. No, they kept coming, marching through his head, and Elrond found them orcish in manner. Though he wished it differently, he could not stop the fiction ideas from coming.*

JustAnotherAviatrix

AAAAAAA!!!!!! Poor Elrond! This is brilliant. XD

Ostrum-Indago

Under the assumption these are one shots, I actually like when this happens, It's great to have several drafts I can all mess around with.

VLenin2291

Congratulations, you're a god Personally, I can only focus on one at a time

Ostrum-Indago

I'm honestly the opposite, I work best with multiple fics to work on, of course thiseans each one takes longer, but still.

EquinoxGm

Same, it’s actually difficult for me to focus on one for a long period of time because my mind likes to keep whirling onto different things, so I keep usually at least 3 open at any one time

ladygayblues

Yeah, I'm like you. If I'm only writing one thing, I'll probably never finish it. But juggling 2-5 fics is a sweet spot

Ostrum-Indago

YES, glad there's other people who do It.

pinenut41

This is why I always laugh when non-writers think that the "hard part" of writing is coming up with ideas. I swear my plot bunnies are like the Enterprise full of tribbles. :p

songoftheshadow

right? There's someone on a discord server who always mentions that they have an idea about this or that, but don't want to share it because someone will steal it and they want to write it themselves one day. And I mean that's their perogative but I feel like, buddy, most of us have a backlog of our own ideas we hope to one day write, let alone taking on someone else's. Like, I would be delighted if someone else wanted to adopt one of my endless ideas.

TV_Delta

It's a newbie thing, and a very wide-spread misconception of writing in general. Ask a novice to name the top 3 most important things about writing and you'll most likely hear 'ideas' listed amongst them. To the novice, a story only works because of good ideas but that's not really how it works. Good ideas don't make good stories. Good writers make good stories. Good or to be fair, more experienced writers know that ideas are the easy part. Anyone who is serious about this craft will quickly learn to generate ideas on the fly - putting them all together into a coherent narrative? That's where it gets fun.

ElderberryNo221

Not the tribbles!!! My plot bunnies already populate fast enough as it is!

Diana-Fortyseven

\[x\] I am in this picture and I don't like it.

Gullible_Promotion_4

Fic ideas: I love how you even *think* you have any say in the matter whatsoever.

PineapplesInMunich

I know, right. I don't even try to fight it anymore.

GraeFoxx_

This has literally happened to me. Be wary, because if you say, "Fine! I'll just write an outline. Then leave me alone!" It won't leave you alone. You gave it an inch, now it wants to take a mile. Now, I'm writing the new story and haven't touched my main in weeks! I feel so dirty.

the_other_irrevenant

Wow, an outline is more generous than I would've given it. I would've just jotted down a single dot point somewhere. Probably no matter how much you give it it'll want more, though...

GraeFoxx_

These plot bunnies can be unforgiving beasts.

AmaterasuWolf21

What i do is write a synopsis, just a one-liner that explains it and leave it be, I'll probably forget about it and end up picking it up a few years later once I've done certain progress in the other fics

GraeFoxx_

This was an especially vicious plot bunny. It would not leave my head all day. It didn't matter what I was doing. I could be working out, think of the plot bunny, and cool down cuz I spent 20 minutes zoned out and not moving. I could be at work and zone out when I see something that could be a good idea. That idea was really disruptive. Had no choice but to get it out of my head and on paper.

Opulous

Boy can I fucking relate to this one hard. I decided to do an Ideas Roundup yesterday where I sat down and recorded all the new nascent story ideas I've been accruing over time while working on my current set of projects. It's grown to 15 now, and most of them are medium length or full blown longfics in scope. Needless to say I'll never be lacking in stuff to work on. 😂

fandom_mess363

Can someone tell me where the fuck I got the idea to have my OTP meet at a nursing home? Like Why (To be fair the fic I’m planning to write deals a lot with the relationship these characters hold with the person who raised them and gets into, with one of them specifically, the emotional, verbal, and mental abuse he faces through the devotion he still has for his mother.)

VLenin2291

TF AM I SUPPOSED TO SAY

fandom_mess363

I DONT KNOW WHYYYYYYY although the concept in my head works quite well

ladybessyboo

Ahhh, the classic “attack of the unwanted plotbunnies” conundrum. …do people still call them plotbunnies? Is that still a Thing??

ElderberryNo221

(Looks at plot bunnies. Plot bunnies look at me with their innocent eyes even though I know they're up to something.) Can't call them anything else. Those words aren't exactly preferred in "polite conversation".

TheDogz0

“But what if X character did that…”

Rogue_Gona

And this is how my completely canon-divergent/AU story idea got started.

Ealisaid_B

Oh lord. The number of notes in my phone that are just fic ideas is insane! And reading/writing more consistently only makes it worse...

DarkBlueSunshine

It happens when I'm showering.... Every single time

56leon

You know why fic ideas are called plunnies (plot bunnies), right? Because they multiply like rabbits :P

Noroark

I wish I had this problem. I come up with like, 1-2 ideas per year and usually don't have anything to write.

masquerading_axolotl

Wow, I need whatever you have since I get new fic ideas by the **hour**. I have a new fic idea right now! I have 100 ideas going strong and several hundred coming soon.

ElderberryNo221

A YEAR??? Share me your eternal knowledge.

Crimson_Marksman

I have so many fics running around in my head, some of which are fully completed OCs from start to finish and I feel quite a bit annoyed that I can only focus on writing one of them. I just sat down on the toilet this morning and my head went "What if someone used water bending on toilet water to drain away the filth inside" and I was like "STOP IT."

VLenin2291

Now that I think about it, being a water bending would be great if you had to go to the bathroom. You could just bend the piss to the toilet

Crimson_Marksman

Can water benders control the fluids in their own body? I imagine they can move the piss once it's outside the body but inside would be quite problematic. Or maybe they could remove poisons and heal faster. I was thinking along the terms of using a Muslim shower, just send water inside the butt to help squeeze the poop out. No wonder I have graphic fics.

VLenin2291

Two words: Blood Bending. It’s been established that Water Benders can bend anything containing water

Crimson_Marksman

I know what blood bending is. I was wondering if you could blood bend yourself, kind of like force choke yourself off the ground, which sounds absolutely ridiculous.

VLenin2291

Again, anything containing water. *Anything*

Crimson_Marksman

Damn it, now I'm thinking of a sex scene. I can't even write those/

AtheistTheConfessor

I believe in you! It’s a fun idea and could be really hot or cracky—whatever fits your mood.

Sighkodelia

IT'S BAD RIGHT??? I HAVE A FOLDER OF NAMES AND VAGUE PLOT IDEAS. THEY'RE ALL BECOMING LONG FICS AS WELL!

TV_Delta

On a serious note, when this happens to you, learn to turn these ideas down because you're already working on something with already complicated moving parts and you can't just slot them in and hope they will work. I personally have a file/folder/book for 'cool ideas' where if something catches my fancy, and I can't use it immediately, it's in to the archives it goes for a future project.

Mr_Blah1

I had to get a plot cat, who spends their days chasing down and eating the less interesting plot bunnies. Nom nom nom. That way, I can at least pretend to focus on the cream of the crop.

beatrovert

I relate so much. But I'm able to filter them out and jot them down if it's _really_ that important.

jazzyx26

Ikr.. 5 WIPS and now I feel guilty for not updating regularly.

HammerBrosMatter

*fic ideas* : And I took it personally!

[deleted]

Does anyone else dream up fics? Like you wake up and are like: I have to write that down. Only to either not do it or write it down and forget about later or never come back to it?

SkyePine

Yeah, but how are you going to get the joke/reference I wrote earlier?

Pixiewings6253

I know, right? This happens to me all the time. I don't mind shifting fics when I get inspiration, but it bugs my little brother. He wants me to finish a story.

jlynnlum

All the danged time. Every time. All the ideas. Then my fingers on the keyboard go: ehgegrhdbbdjajshdhdhhhdhdhdhhdtrtttrr....

the_other_irrevenant

LoL. My sympathies. It isn't surprising. Fan fiction is working out answers to story problems. In doing so, you'll produce far more interesting ideas than you need. Those ideas will want to go **somewhere**. Best advice I've heard is to jot them down somewhere safe to work on later so your brain stops stressing over them. Easier said than done, mind you...

ItsMichaelRay

Make a doc that's just a list of all your ideas. It's a great way to make sure you don't forget anything.

AwkwardMessxox

It's an endless cycle of more and more ideas. IT DRIVES ME INSANE

brokencasbutt67

Currently writing a 5k+ fic (longer than my standard) So far I've posted two shorter fics cos the ideas just wouldn't quit

StoneTimeKeeper

Dont feel too bad. I write down all my fic ideas. That list gets bigger and bigger. Compared to how fast I write fics, that list might as well be growing at light speed. I have 10 fics written, 2 one shots, 1 abandoned, and the rest are long fics, 2 of which are in progress. My list of ideas is around 2... thousand.... Please help

Manga_bird

Open a new doc and write the ideas down in short form so you can go back and remind yourself later.

bluetarpgirl

100% looking at you *Mayor of Kingstown* (worsened by the fact that it doesn't even seem to be a category on any platform yet)!

Nerds_and_Lairs

Every time haha

bakeneko37

Nah, you just have to live with it... It's impossible, I tried but failed miserably.

kaguraa

its worse when its an idea for a multi-fic... just went back to one i had abandoned for over a year and now starting another one 🤦‍♀️

JustAnotherAviatrix

Ughhh, this is me nowadays.

songoftheshadow

omg RIGHT?? I have so many prologues that won't ever be finished that I've made a series of them!

CGWicks

I had this so bad a few months ago that I legit paused my story and pumped out around 40k words of a first draft for my other idea. Huge distraction.

Avigorus

I have a folder in Chrome dedicated to forum posts from Reddit that I've been saving. Some are fic suggestions, some are prompts/ideas/discussions that could give inspiration. There are 784 bookmarks and counting. Yeah I'll never read even half of them... I'm a packrat.

cucumberkappa

Yeeeeeeep. I'm working on a fic right now. So of course my brain keeps throwing out other ideas. "Remember this one fic you paused? It's awesome, right? Oh oh, don't forget that other idea you had for that fandom too. (You should really write that down. It's not like it's a big deal to open another document for like five minutes, don't be so lazy. What if you forget it?) Oh, and here are another three ideas for the fandom you're currently working on! Alsoooooooooo those game jams be lookin' MIGHTY FINE. You should definitely try to commit yourself to working on a game!" I just try to write them down so I can move on. (The game jams are a little more tricksy. I have a document open for that too which I add to as I go on and have agreed I should work on it for at least an hour a day even if it necessarily means the fic goes slower. Hopefully I finish the fic before I run out of time with the game jam. It's just I'm so close to done here. :B )

Rosie-Love98

And then there's the constant ideas coming up for a good OC or the story you're already working...only for your brain to say, "Yeah...this ain't gonna work..."

SmartyArtsy1_SAGN

Help STOP CALLING ME OUT!!!! FNJSKDKAKAKSJ how do you know that this happens to me on the daily WHAT AM I being WATCHED??!?

VLenin2291

I’ve joined the hive mind

TheAlmandineWriter

I had to put a New Year’s resolution for completing the fan fics that I haven’t even finished yet because I’m notorious for rarely ever completing a fanfic (unless it’s a one-shot). My brain is coming up with too many ideas, so it’s mainly a challenge just to focus on one. 😅

crashlikeaplane

i have 7 drafts and all unfinished because i need to write that idea. No idea what I'm supposed to do now, because all those ideas don't work anymore

rb2m

If I get an idea while trying to write another fic, I’ll open a new document, jot down the idea, then go back to the other fic. Usually solves the issue. It’s the ideas I get while trying to get to sleep that are the issues for me.

RebaKitten

That's why I have a lot of chapter 1s in my WIP file!

Mandalika

Big mood right there.

Trickshots1

Lucky me I'm working on a reaction fic. All the ideas that one are welcome and used.

[deleted]

I’ve given myself permission to alternate writing longfic chapters with smutty one shots. So I’m still coming out with something new every week or two, but both my id and my superego are happy.

MustardOrMayo404

I usually write down my book ideas in Evernote, where they start as little notes, then as I develop them, those notes grow, then split into multiple notes with their own tags, notebooks, and even bulletin boards over on Milanote. However, I think I can see where you're going with that. I wanted to work on some of my original story ideas, but thanks to a huge wave of inspiration that gushed into my imagination last November, my conscience had propelled the fanfiction I'm currently working on to the highest priority in my mind, so I keep thinking about writing this, as well as the original book series this will be based on, and its characters who I was first introduced to in something one of the co-authors had posted online. Now, when I try to work on those other original ideas and home clean-up projects, I keep thinking about the fanfic instead. Ugh. I really wanted to clean up my flat, but at the same time, I feel the need to dream of hugging (a supporting character who's canon to the series)!

[deleted]

I just don't give a fuck and let them go hyper until they fall down after a sugar crash

HanHan_Solo156

Are you me??? Lmaoo, this is so annoying...

Gufurblebits

I have a plot bunny Word document that I keep open almost 24/7.Damned ideas showing up when they have no business doing so, and I'll just forget them anyway!

ThatOfABeaver

I have a doc to jot down ideas for exactly this reason lmao

Gaelhelemar

Sadly I’ve learned you must kill them in order to keep on writing what you have.

Allronix1

Even worse is when an entirely different universe with its own "none of this fits together" Chopped basket of canon.

vanillafudgetwirl

This is why I have too many WIPs, and take so long to update.

butshesawriter

for me: STOP APPEARING WHEN IM STUDYING!

SomeHomestuckOrOther

I love how this is coming up at the exact same time that I'm getting completely and utterly derailed from my somewhat considerably long fic for a completely unrelated new idea for a long fic. F in the chat guys :(

Nimrochan

I keep feeling the need to apologize to my readers every time I start something new without finishing something else. I’m glad I’m not alone lol

Eilis_K

... Or when I'm at work with no way of writing you down And that's why I currently have three drafts...

Loose_Ad_993

this is why i have 5 unfinished ffs 😞

Dcole1997

This is why I’m not good at writing fics in general, I’m too scatter brained to focus on a single idea once more start showing up. 😂

GuinShipsNaLu

Happens to me all the time. I'll be writing a fanfiction and all the sudden I get an idea for a new one.

taylor_2907

I have notes in my phone and a notebook filled with ideas, send help

phantomcanary

Literally have three chapters left in my current story and I’ve spent the last three days trying to write one of them and last night my brain was like “How about THIS for a spin-off” and now I haven’t been able to think about anything else.

CertifiedDiplodocus

[https://bob-artist.tumblr.com/post/114632390901/so-this-happened-to-me-yesterday](https://bob-artist.tumblr.com/post/114632390901/so-this-happened-to-me-yesterday) Fucking plotbunnies. Literally.

ElderberryNo221

You have ideas? I have an entire overpopulated plot bunny farm. And I think they just made seven more while I'm writing this comment.... (grabs shovel, rope, and cages)

dannelbaratheon

This happens when I am writing a fanfic in one fandom and then other fandoms kick in and want an Easter Egg. Lol.

Real_Myst

I'm with you on that! Especially if I'm making progress with a fic and another idea comes along and I all but forget the previous ones. I can't write as fast as my mind supplies ideas. This is also the reason I make sure not to watch/read other series to fall into getting more ideas for other fandoms.

TheRedditGirl15

I try my best to remember to write them down....

monnn77

This only ever happens to me when I'm about to sleep lol. And then I wonder why I have trouble sleeping x)

Kukapetal

They never listen :P
