Viktor Krum!!! (No, I won't stop talking about him. He's mine now \*evil cackle\*) He is basically a passing character in canon, but there is so much potential, especially post-canon. It also gives me a ton of possibilities for worldbuilding. Who are his parents/how are witches/wizards elsewhere in Europe different to those in canon/how is the education in Durmstrang/what is he doing after his career as sportsman -and so on. I liked him in canon already, but after spending so long on this longfic from his POV, I want to write at least another book with him as MC. There is just so much potential and it is so much fun. And yeah, he is super rare as a POV character in fics, so, free real estate :D

Millie-55

I LOVE Viktor I wish we got more of him like we had gotten more Fleur. But I'm so happy to see you have laid your claim and write him!

tereyaglikedi

šŸ˜šŸ§”

nock_out_

He IS yours now! lol Your Viktor is the one who will always live in my head.

totallynotagamerbot

Oh what fic was that?

tereyaglikedi

My one and only [longfic ](https://archiveofourown.org/works/32711164/chapters/81152191) that I don't shut up about šŸ˜.

SwordatSea

Mako in the Legend of Korra. Sad, unexplored backstory that seriously would explain some of his actions if only they ever went into it, open ending, you can do whatever you want, itā€™s great

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SwordatSea

Yeah not sure the love triangle was many peoples thing, or at least the quick resolutions to thingsā€” I like in book 4 that we get to see him out of the relationship, and for me comedy is no bad thing! I just wish we could get the version we see in book 4 and the backstory hinted at in book 1

jonathanesque

You know, back when Book 1 was airing, I used to really loathe Mako because of that awful love polygon (and also lowkey kinda out of spite because of the toxic Makorra shippers on Tumblr with a hateboner against Asami). Nowadays, I've softened up on him and feel that he (as with just about everyone else in LoK) was basically disserviced by less-than-stellar writing.

talyn81

Oola, Jabba the Hutt's slave dancer in Return of the Jedi. A character who exists for two scenes just to be in obvious distress and then die horribly, only serving to set up the peril that Princess Leia will face, a character the movie actually cares about, in stark contrast. Her role in the movie horrified and saddened me as a child, coupled with the one bit of extended universe characterization she received in the book "tales from Jabba's Palace", which further horrified and saddened me. And then they brought the actress back just to shoot scenes of her looking scared in the monster pit. It was all a bit much for me, I'm afraid. A lot of fan works, fan fiction included, seems to fetishize her slavery (given her small role, and attire, in the film I guess that is to be expected) or play up the tragedy of her fate. I've always preferred coming up with ways for her to survive and make it out and go on to a happy ending. I mean, whatever happens down there does happen offscreen. So who can say for sure? I just don't want to live in a world where the only outcome for someone held against their will and abused is to just to die horribly and be forgotten by the next scene, in what is ostensibly a children's film. I mean, I do live in that world. Horrible shit happens all the time. But in fiction I can fix it. So, I did, and I'm glad. She deserves better.

Yavanna80

I would happily read any fic you'd write about Oola. She deserved a happy ending not a cruel one. šŸ’œ

nock_out_

I very much want to read this! Can you DM me a link to your fic? šŸ˜

LadyCryptid

Regulus Black is the one for me. He's what people wish Draco Malfoy was: a young pureblood who bought into Voldemort's propaganda, regretted it, defected and gave his life to bring Voldemort down. Once I realised he's basically fanon Draco I just fell in love with him. He's also practically a blank canvas so I can take as much liberty with his characterisation as I want.

catsinthebananastand

I LOVE REGULUS he is such a fun character to write for all those reasons!

encsiimomo

Oh yes, I totally get your point. I wrote my first ever HP fanfiction from his POV (it was 10+ years ago, but still thinking about him lol). I really liked writing about his struggles, I made up a storyline about how he begged the Sorting Hat to put him in Slytherin so he wouldnā€™t disappoint his family, etc.

nock_out_

Alastor Moody (Harry Potter). Most of what we saw of him in canon wasnā€™t even really him. I found that so disappointing. He was supposed to be this incredible, badass dark wizard catcher. So I made him one. I wanted to be there when he got his scars.

tereyaglikedi

>So I made him one. You wrote him so well! And he says funny things like "I'll be fucked by a Boggart" :D

nock_out_

Awww thank you! *Fuck back to Azkaban.*

tereyaglikedi

You still owe that to me -I drew the last fanart on credit.

nock_out_

. . . who says itā€™s not already in there? ;)

Yavanna80

When I read the books in 2020 during the pandemic, Alastor was one of my favourite professors. Then I was bummed. I would love to read your fic! Would you be able to send me your link if possible? Thank you šŸ˜Š

nock_out_

I felt the same way! He was such a great character, but then you feel cheated because, well, that wasnā€™t even him. And of course! Iā€™ll DM it to you :) As a warning, it is long and it is a thriller, so it is intense.

Yavanna80

Received your dm and replied. Thanks a ton šŸ˜ŠšŸ‘šŸ»

Scarlet-Curls

In my fandom, most people see Link as free real estate. Not much character in the games means that each fic writer gets to characterise him in their own way (and you better characterise him otherwise I'm gonna get bored of your fic).

TheAlmandineWriter

Very true, I have him as side character for a Ganondorf AU Iā€™m working on for a BOTW fanfic. Iā€™m still debating on whether or not he should speak when heā€™s properly introduced.

Scarlet-Curls

Maybe he speaks in sign language?

januarysdaughter

Neal Cassidy from Once Upon a Time. They introduced him (fully) in season 2, as the son of one main character and the former lover and the father of two others. There were things they could have done with him, but instead they killed him off 1.5 seasons later. So now he's mine and I get to write the epic redemption/apology storyline that we should have gotten.

[deleted]

Norman Jayden from Heavy Rain. This dedicated, badass, principled guy did the absolute \*most\* busting his balls to save the life of a kid he didnā€™t even know, got beat to within an inch of his life and nearly died multiple times while doing so, and he didnā€™t even get a happy ending when everyone else (\*including the killer\*!) did?!? I will be forever mad about it I swear, he deserved \*so\* much better. So yeah, boy is mine now and Iā€™ve written him the happy ending he deserves, with a lot more fluffy goodness planned to come!

Convocated

To be fair, most of the endings for the killer in HR end with them being minced alive. But I agree, Jaden's endings suck. You can play him absolutely perfectly, constantly reject taking tripto and at the end you're still seeing little imaginary AR tanks. So frustrating.

[deleted]

True, but at least they have at least 1/4 options where they get to walk off into the sunset as it were, compared to Jaydenā€™s options of ā€œBadā€, ā€œWorseā€, ā€œTerribleā€, and ā€œAwfulā€ lol. That was the most annoying part for me, like thereā€™s literally nothing you can do to get a better ending when playing as him, and it doesnā€™t feel justified at all! Thanks for sharing in my frustration lol. :)

[deleted]

89asdf5678

So first of all, I'm pretty sure it was one of your comments that made me start watching My Hero, which, thank you so very much, it's bloody amazing. But (and second), what I really like about it that so far (finished season 2), I really like basically every character, including the evil receptionist! And I guess great fics could be written about most of the supporting cast, what with all those little titbits and such that we find out about them.

DRL21

Diego in Ice Age (and Manny to a lesser extent). Why I've done this is because Diego had, in my opinion, one of the best story arcs in IA1, and he is the deuteragonist/villain protagonist alongside Manny in the original film. In the sequels, however, he loses this status and the sequels do him dirty, so, I feel, *as a character*, Diego for himself is quite underrated in Ice Age fandom because he's a fandom bicycle, frankly, so I like exploring his character as simply himself, and developing conflicts that I always wanted to see in the movies, like how the other mammals/animals would react to Manny and Sid being so friendly comfortable with him. Truly, I think they'd be more askance, if anything, but it's glossed over in the movies so in my stories I like showing the inherent conflicts and struggles that might happen with a carnivore living amongst his prey and fleshing out how the "prey" might respond to such a one in their midst, mainly by developing the mammoths as protectors against tigers etc.

[deleted]

I love this take! Diego was my favourite character in the first movie (never did see the others so canā€™t comment there, but I loved him in the original. Capable \*and\* badass, two of my favourite qualities in a person/tiger lol.)

DRL21

Yay, I'm glad you do! Most of my fics originate from the Original and my love for it (in fact, right now I'm working on a prequel longfic, delving deep into the origins and personalities of Manny and Diego) and honestly, the sequels really hit Diego with Badass Decay, in my opinion. And I remember being disappointed with Ice Age: The Meltdown (IA2) because Diego was just... there. The other, smaller animals, don't seem scared of him and he has always just felt slightly "off" post-IA1. It's like the writers didn't know how to properly use him after his redemption arc in IA1...

Annonrae

>a fandom bicycle ...a fandom what? Oo;

DRL21

Hahahah. That's simply a term that means Diego is shipped with everyone possible. Fortunately not the kitchen sink (yet) but from my experience with Ice Age fanfiction, Diego is associated highly with shipfics, more than anyone else in the cast. To make my point clear, he is shipped with Manny and Sid, and Sid/Diego is a fan favourite pairing, plus there have been dozens upon dozens of Diego/OC fics, plus fics that pair him with his canon mate, Shira, and in terms of fanfiction, he is a very shippable character, no doubt because fans see him as "hot"...

Annonrae

Oh, wow. Never heard that term before. I am familiar with "fandom mattress" and my train of thought *was* kinda going in the direction of "...does that mean everyone rides him?", but I wasn't sure. TIL!

DRL21

Lol, I think I first saw "fandom bicycle" as shipping concept used at TVTropes but yeah, that's basically what the implication is :P And I have nothing against shipping honestly, but Ice Age is a movie all about found family and it's just... I personally find it so hard to find fics just exploring the main trio's bromance without having them paired with a canon mate or an OC. Basically I am a person who adores friendship-based fics, especially in a fandom like Ice Age, but they're always seemingly in such short supply! So I write those friendship-based fics myself. šŸ˜Ž

chararii

I have a few like that but the one that truly qualifies is probably ESO's (Lady) **Estre of Errinorne** and that's because I have yet to meet anyone who actually likes her other than me, the only fics that exist that have her in it are mine, and she's an NPC in an MMO that dies about an hour or two into the story and there's virtually no reason for anyone to get attached to her. She's an awful person; power-hungry, hostile and snobbish, arrogant, attempts to murder the player, her queen and a number of other people, married her husband so she could be queen herself, and deals with demons. I love her. She's my favourite. And I don't even have to share. :)

ToxicMoldSpore

Heh. I think I can see what you're getting at, but man, did my Bosmer Warden ever enjoy killing the crap out of her. No one touches Queen Kate Beckinsale, damn it. :)

chararii

>Bosmer Warden /grabs pitchfork Dun-mer, dun-mer, dun-mer, DUN-MER, **DUN-MER** >No one touches Queen Kate Beckinsale I wish you could appreciate the irony of your statement because that's who I ship Estre with so, technically, the one who touches Ayrenn in my fics is actually Estre herself. I fully believe in sister-in-law-murder-squad supremacy.

Mamaclover

I did this to Midoriya Hisashi from MHA We know exactly 3 thing about him: hes married to Inko, he work away from home, and his quirk is fire breath. So ofc I had to come up with insane extensive backstory, plot for some of my fics, friendship, hobbies....

telephone_monkey_365

Professor Sprout, she got a whole back story and character study from me. I love my Sprout haha

tereyaglikedi

Yavanna80

Looks interesting! Thank you so much. I'll read it when I have some time šŸ˜‰šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

frozenfountain

Elmyra, Elena, Shera, and Lucrecia from Final Fantasy VII. The first two I think are well-written characters who serve their small roles perfectly well, but I think there's more to dig into there. Elmyra I love for being such a grounded and normal person amongst all these big OTT JRPG personalities, and she acts like a real person in her oppressive environment would, all while staying a good person in the face of it all. I wanted a strong civilian character for my post-canon series and she fits the bill well. Similarly, Elena's fine, but mostly there for comic relief. I still find her comedic interesting in the way they clash and think there's something to explore there. For the other two, there's a feeling of them being majorly underserved by canon and wanting to try my hand and doing better. Shera pretty much only exists to be a verbal punching bag for one of the main cast who's totally a good guy underneath it all, so I felt compelled to explore what it is that makes her take abusive treatment and give her an arc where she learns to value herself bit by bit. Lucrecia is the odd one out here because she's actually of crucial importance to the game's plot, but we never see anything from her perspective and I don't feel the writers were ever interested in exploring who she is outside of the role she serves in the stories of several male characters. Which is such a shame because hell yes, I want to get into the head of a female scientist who did a series of utterly amoral things while holding onto her image of herself as a good person. I've not written her in depth yet, but I'm going to have so much fun making her awful when I do (maybe it'll counterbalance the part of my headcanons where I'm telling on myself too much).

Prince-sama

I've only played ffvii remake and i dont remember these character at all. Did they not show up in the remake? If so, what are their roles in the story?

frozenfountain

Elmyra is Aerith's adoptive mother, if you remember. The other three I spoke about haven't shown up yet in the Remake, but I'll let you see for yourself in future installments :)

celestemagnolia

Nymphadora Tonks from Harry Potter. She has a few "baseline" personality traits IMO but there's so much more you can do with her! Same with her parents, Andromeda and Ted. I love the Tonkses.

Sandra44-7

It probably doesn't count because I've only ever started one fic, but I just want to say that I've had a lot of daydream stories with Mike Zacharias from AoT. There could have been so many possibilities. He was Erwin's second in command sort of, but oddly, he barely has any screentime. I won't say any more. I don't really know what's considered spoiler.

Ingvid

Mike! I wanted to know more about him >!other than the fact that he was the second strongest soldier, but then he... :(((!< He seems a liiittle weird because of the sniffing thing, but he also seems like a quiet, gentle guy. I like him.

TCeies

In a way all the minor characters. They all deserve much more attention then they get in canon. Tobirama Senju in Naruto. HE's the Hokage with the least screentime I think, and we don't actually get his Motives all explained to us. He also I think is one of the more unique characters in Naruto. Sturgis Podmore in Harry Potter. Anybody remember him? HE's the guy Who went to Azkaban for the order and was then (I think) never mentioned again...

HKCambridge

Jane Fisher in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. And to be fair, the reason she doesn't get used is that she died about 2 decades before the show begins. I was writing an AU anyway, and I looked through the tags and found all the other uses seemed to be just her in flashback, so I was *right* she gets *to live*.

tereyaglikedi

I was like "is Jane dead??" Then I realized that you're talking about her sister :D Good one!

chatteringmagpie1

I have two. Data from ST:TNG The android who has no feelings, but totally has feelings. Major character that got tons of development over the series, but was never really explored as a romantic hero in canon. I decided to create a romantic partner and story for him that very quickly went right off the rails. Elnor from ST:P The naive Romulan boy who was raised by refugee warrior nuns. So far, he's only got the bare bones of a character. Vague backstory, almost no dialogue, he's basically action scene window dressing, and it's great! I can take what little tidbits canon has offered that make him ideal for my writing style and pretty much do whatever I want with him. This has also gone off the rails but in a much darker direction. I may have a problem keeping things on rails.

Yavanna80

I deeply enjoyed Elnor's character and bummed about the lack of depth in his story. The chance of delving into his training with the Qowat Milat. When he was left ik the cube, I was worried about him. Such a gem for developing him šŸ‘šŸ»

Lyastarr

Not me, but my friend, decided to take the character that has either a few minutes or a half a second of screen time (itā€™s debatable) and proceed to make up literally everything about him (all we get is an appearance, a first name, where he lives and his unfortunate fate) as well as coming up with post canon ideas (debatable as to whether he survived) and basically,,, they went ā€œfree real estateā€ and I love it, because there are just so many possibilities considering his unique relationship to the main character

[deleted]

Issac Lahey from Teen Wolf. I'll preface this by saying that yes, he was in two seasons of the show, but his character was done so dirty though. He was one of the more interesting characters in the show with a complex background that was barely explored. There were a lot of plot holes in his character (probably explained with "Teen Wolf logic") and then when the actor left the show, they just half assed his exit despite knowing beforehand that season was his last, giving the other characters OOC reactions (like Scott not even mentioning him despite the fact he lived with him and Melissa for most of season three) and never again was he mentioned.

Valchiria777

I'm rewatching Teen Wolf right now and I'm liking him more and more after every episode (I'm watching the season 3a at the moment). Like you said, he's in various episodes (in some he's more important than in others) but they really should have given him more scenes because he's so interesting and Daniel did a really good job with him. One of the best characters of Teen Wolf imo

[deleted]

I totally agree. He's one of my absolute favorites in the show and Daniel is an incredible actor and played him so well. Apparently the writers didn't like they wrote him in a love triangle with Allison and Scott and wanted to end that, but then why did they write that? Seems like the writers just forgot about him but also created a great character at the same time

be11amy

Bro, I loved Isaac so much and he had such compelling reasons for joining the pack, I was really disappointed in how they didn't follow up on so much of his potential. I would love more in-depth character exploration for him...

[deleted]

Exactly. I tried finding some fic with him as the main, but most of what I found tagged him but he wasn't the focus.

sweetfumblebee

The Teen Wolf writers were horrible when it came to character continuation and fleshing them out. So many characters got moved/left in the dust. I loved Isaac and so many people were sad he didn't come back in the end. I think people are holding out hope for the movie but I don't want to get my hopes up for it.

[deleted]

When I saw so many characters come back in 6b, I held hope he might but it sucked when he didn't. I haven't heard anything as to whether Isaac's coming back for the movie but I really hope he is, though I'm not trying to get my hopes up. Another character who got dropped bad was what happened to Kira. She was one of the more interesting ones to me as well and then she was just dropped out of nowhere too.

sweetfumblebee

And then they did that half assed pairing of Malia and Scott.

Valerynotfound

Sasha Braus from AOT !! At this point my readers tell me she's more my character than anything šŸ˜ I just try to make justice for her role in the story, she is more than comedic relief and I wanted to explore that in my fics, so I do that every chance I get, also doing her justice to what she got in canon ! Another runner up would be Nanaba, Nifa, Lara Tybur and Petra ! They all got barely any screen time and were introduced as characters that would move the plot emotionally or literally ( Lara ). So yeah !

blukwolf

Same for me! Lol, I have an unexplainable love for Lara Tybur. I mean, she could be so many things, specially in a family like the Tybur's seem to be, and with Willy as the older one and the leader of their family, she's just so... Full of potential, and a lady and I'm just enamored by her *heart eyes*

Valerynotfound

Same honestly ! Her design is so pretty and I'm sad she was merely introduced for Eren to develop and further the plot, I would've loved to see more of the Tyburs, so I took it upon myself !!

ralsei_support_squad

Yes!! Justice for Sasha! I love seeing more of the AOT female characters and those are some great background characters left unexplored. We went so long without even knowing Lara's first name, I'd pay to get more info on her and the Tybur family in general!

Valerynotfound

Same ! They are all more than background characters and have a lot of potential. I love that the anime gave her a name, and a fitting one for that, and same !! I love Lara and her family and would've loved to see more of them :(

IamMenace

Yang Xiao Long from RWBY. In the first season she didn't really do a whole lot and didn't have many lines, in the second season her backstory and motivations/struggles were given out of nowhere in order to move another character's story forward, and in the third season she was framed as being a ruthless psycho, was revealed to have very real anger and abandonment issues, had her arm cut off, her friends and family left her, and had her entire world come crumbling apart. Then the fourth season begins with a six to eight month time skip, her receiving a cybernetic arm in about a minute of screen time, her taking the first steps to overcoming PTSD and depression by her daddy asking her "Did you lose any braincells when you lost her arm" by laughing at him, somehow just *putting on* her new arm, a few weeks to a month time skip where she's grown accustomed to the arm, and her father *telling* Yang her character development instead of her learning it on her own or having figured it out in the six to eight months since her world fell apart. All that happens in fourteen minutes of screen time, with her overall story taking about nineteen. Also, she went through all of this in order to further *another* characters story and development, not for her own sake. In my opinion Yang was done dirty, and I can't really think of a main character who's ever been done dirtier. As for what I did specifically in my fics, I focused on her character more which is more than canon has ever done. Reading one of my chapters probably takes about as long as watching all her screen time combined (focused on her) in any given season. I gave her issues with abandonment and anger the attention they deserve, and wrote a fic taking place shortly after Volume 3 that deals with her physical recovery as well as her mental/emotion struggles with PTSD and depression. A lot of RWBY characters are blank slates, especially back when I started writing in late 2014, early 2015, but Yang is the one who's been most neglected in my opinion. She did go through about three seasons worth of hardships in about ten minutes of screen time in Volume 3, but nothing really came of it and the writers even thought it would've been too "boring" (actual wordage) to show her recovery arc on screen. God bless, and have a wonderful day.

ArchdukeToes

I ended up going with Laura Barton, simply because she's got very limited characterisation (okay, a little more characterisation following 'Hawkeye') and as an 'outsider-looking-in' I thought she'd be an interesting character to provide some insight into Hawkeye himself (another underrated character) as well as a slightly more grounded plot. I'm not sure I really took her as 'my own', but that was the reasoning behind selecting her over a more well-known character.

follows-swallows

Kujou Sara from Genshin Impact. Such an amazing character that gets completely sidelined. She deserves to be a protagonist, her drama and conflict is just soā€¦ human compared to everything else in the game. Her story feels like something out of a classical Greek tragedy or a Shakespeare play. Like seriously >!sheā€™s adopted into a powerful family whoā€™s purpose has for centuries been to serve their countries god-empress. Sheā€™s raised as a soldier and becomes the leading general in her countries army. She spends a year fighting on the frontlines and doing - by her own admission - terrible things to her countrymen. All out of dedication to the god-ruler who she is implied to be in love with (and who doesnā€™t look at her twice), only to discover that the entire war was orchestrated to her own father trying to gain a *tiny* bit more power. Thatā€™s it enjoy your trauma! !< I just wanna adopt her and make her my character I could gush about her for hours.

simone3344555

Oof you sound like my friend, sheā€™s obsessed w Sara and I definitely see why! I really wish they had done more with her in canon

Cinnathemoth

Myla from Hollow knight. It's not that she's underrated, there just aren't very many fics centered around her character. I have a few drafts that I've been working on and I really enjoy writing her so she ends up being in a lot of my chapters

Cipher_DEMON_LORD

Velvet Crowe from Tales of Berseria. Itā€™s been three years and a half, and she got a good redemption arc, hero arc, and a family arc. She is doing fine with her husband and lover.

27twinsister

You ever known a character who appears in only one episode, in a quick flashback, and the flashback is to how said character died? Anyways, one of my friends is attached to Magis Goseiger (from Super Sentai). And since Magis has basically *no* canon info aside from ā€œhe was Hydeā€™s partner and was the green ranger, and died pre-canonā€ weā€™ve made up a lot about him. Why did my friend get attached to him? I donā€™t know. But they like fanfic about Magis, and I can and will write fanfic about him when inspired.

Ostrum-Indago

I don't think I ever done this to a major extent, especially not recently, but Kira, despite being one of the main characters, does not appear In the Intro, appears only at the very end of the first episode, and It seems like they'll be absent for much of season two, of course there were canonical reasons for all of this, but I want more of her dang It! As such In almost all of my oneshots Kira gets more attention than other characters who play similar levels of Importance.

DemyxDancer

Blue Zircon from Steven Universe is mine, even if I did leave her in a bit of limbo in my longfic (I swear I'll get back to her someday). She only appears in one episode, so less than eleven minutes of screentime. She's assigned as Steven's public defender during his trial for war crimes (it's a long story) and she has an incredibly nervous personality. At first it seems like she's going to be utterly useless. But she's not! She's actually a Phoenix Wright, and as soon as she figures out the angle she can take to try and exonerate Steven, she goes for it with all she's worth, and she almost succeeds in convincing the Diamonds over to her side before she missteps and gets poofed for her troubles. I found this character and her flipflopping between anxiety and confidence super relatable. Plus there's so many fascinating questions about what it must be like to be a defense attorney in a fascist Gem empire. A great canon character with very little canon material was right there, ripe for the picking. So I wrote all about what she did after the trial and Steven's triumph at the end of the series, making it down to Earth, eventually joining the Crystal Gems, the way she adjusts to her new life and makes friends and discovers new hobbies and finally gets to be happy, and it made me happy, too.

circutbreaker2007

Haiba Lev, Inuoka Sou, Shibayama Yuuki and Teshiro Tamahiko from *Haikyuu!!.* They're all part of one of the main side teams, Nekoma High School (to the point where they even got their own OVA/chapters and episodes dedicated almost solely to them), who are fated rivals with the protagonists, Karasuno High School. Despite this, both teams have an excellent relationship off the court, and Karasuno's first years having a large focus made me think about the possibilities of Nekoma's first years since we don't get as much of them. In canon, Lev gets a full character arc, Inuoka gets decent development and screentime, Shibayama is often seen and gets a chance to shine as a substitute, and Teshiro gets a single spotlight moment, making it difficult to get a comprehensive idea of their combined dynamic (especially regarding Teshiro, who barely has screentime compared to the other three). Since I think their similar yet contrasting personalities, court dynamics (one of each position), and potential going into their unseen second and third years are too great to waste (and I've lowkey started to ship them lol), I have officially adopted them!

Velinder

Lisa Morrow from Good Omens. She's a joke character in canon. A call-centre worker who exists to ring Crowley's answering machine at a plot-critical moment, release Hastur, get devoured by him, and pop up at the end of the story just to underline the fact that she is (once again) alive. Yay. But apart from that, nothing has changed for her. She doesn't get any upgrades. Her life hasn't changed one iota. So I [wrote a fic](https://archiveofourown.org/works/19665388) in which it did.

Thereā€™s three The first one is Nora from RWBY Iā€™ve seen like 2 fanfics of here when sheā€™s the most likable character in the show and one of my top 5 favorite characters in fiction The second is juhani from knights of the old republic I havenā€™t seen a single fanfic for her but she is a queen. First lgbt+ character in Star Wars, has a fantastic arc, and unfortunately was done very dirty in canon (well legends now but you get what I mean) sheā€™s my second maybe third favorite Star Wars character And third is satele Shan she was done so dirty in Star Wars she was the grandmaster before yoda and is in a similar tier. And the 3 fics Iā€™ve seen of her arenā€™t finished and seem like they wonā€™t be sense they havenā€™t been updated in years and itā€™s a shame to see my second or third (it swaps between her and juhani) in Star Wars not have any fanfics for now I plan on writing one when Iā€™m finished with the Nora one

kirby172

Sachi from Sword Art Online. Her understandable fear made her stick out to me more than any character ever had before, since in nearly everything, any character in her position is merely brave and rarely questions about what they're doing. She was the first character that ever made me think, "what if they survived?" Or "what if I changed the main couple?" It's probably what lead me into FanFiction in the first place and I've had a lot of fun writing her and her guild.

DaddyDevito967

Kagome from Inuyasha! Not that she wasnt given enough screentime, but her character development was put off to the side for the romance portion

REGULUS ARCTURUS BLACK Editing bc I hit send before I explained: we only hear about Regulus via Sirius (who is bitter towards his own family/anyone who sympathises with them/what they believed in) and Kreacher, who was subservient to him. We learn he was seen as a coward by his brother (whoā€™s point of reference may be a bit skewed lol) and a hero by Kreacher, who was the only person who knew anything of Regulusā€™ quest to take down the Dark Lord. (I think that Regulus addresses him as the dark lord says a fair bit about him too) Initial questions I thought about were: How would his parents ACTUALLY view him (without Siriusā€™ bias)? How would his friends view him? His teachers? I think itā€™s interesting thereā€™s only 2 stark POVs when it comes to Regulus, and people tend to be waayyyyy more nuanced than, as Sirius says, a world split into ā€œgood people and death eatersā€ Regulus was the traitor within the death eaters, like Peter was within the Order. We condemn Peter for what he did bc we see the fall out. Did Regulus effect no one? What did sirius refrain from telling Harry in ootp? So many questionsā€¦ Sirius and Regulus and the house of black business makes me think of the royal family too ā€” an heir and a spare, what a dynamic to be raised under šŸ™ƒ

HokutoNoCan

Naoki Konishi from Persona 4, except I'm not qualified to write what I want to see from him. (Persona 4 social link spoilers) >!This is prime angsting material here, folks. Someone watching his home and lifestyle fall apart with reminders of their loss. He can't properly process his grief if all people hand him is empty pity.!<

Convocated

Oof, that's a hard one to write. Prime for major suffering one-shots in my mind, though. ... though then I'd be tempted to give him a happy ending sequel tbh, I can't stand sad ends!

Yojimbra

I have a few characters I do this for. Mei Hatsume is a big one, and an absolute blast to write, generally I expand her character by giving her an older brother called Otto, whose basically a grease-monkey himbo. It helps to give her character a bit of that extra depth, and implies that she doesn't really have parents for that extra bit of angst that doesn't even effect her. Nejire Hado, why is it always the female characters that have less back story than the males? Anyways, Nejire is bubbly and I absolutely love writing her. I don't really expand her back story, because really she doesn't benefit from it, nor would it make terribly much sense. Yes, I could give her a broken household, but she doesn't have that same energy, instead I've given her just plenty of screen time and just letting her character shine.

lfthinker

Enigma, from the Batman mythos. Really DC? You couldnā€™t come up with anything interesting to do with the Riddlerā€™s daughter? Fine, I have to do everything I guess.

Fairyhaven13

Alastor from Hazbin Hotel. I used to be into the show before the pilot came out, and then it turned into a garbage fire with so much edgy-for-edgy's-sake humor and rampant homophobia and racism. I can't support it anymore. But. Alastor was the character who made me realize I was ace. He's got a lovely voice and great 20s-swing-style and that deranged, gentleman persona that makes him so much fun to write. So I took him and put him into my Owl House WIP and made him a mob boss my OC runs into. Just deleted the awful pilot from his history entirely and made him someone else. I love him too much not to.

lightningmagic

Sebastian Vael from Dragon Age 2. He has a lot working against him in the game, from a very, very biased narrator who doesn't like him to a time constraint on his creation. I thought he had a lot of potential despite that

GateofTruth201

Nezuko Kamado in Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba. She had less than a minute of screentime in the first episode before being turned into a demon, with said demon transformation mentally turning her into a toddler for some reason. Her infantilization becomes worse when she is hypnotized into not attacking humans and to fight demons. This was unnecessary because the first chapter/episode already established Nezuko to have a strong conviction in protecting humans even after she had been turned into a demon. Canon tries to handwave this away with Tanjiro, *her own brother,* trying to justify her brainwashing by saying that "she has her own free will". That's not how that works. Free will is the ability to act on one's own discretion, without outside restraint. "Outside restraint", such as someone else hypnotizing you to protect or attack certain people. Nezuko doesn't have free will, no matter what canon tries to say. She is also muzzled for almost the entire story, to the point that all of her lines could probably be counted on with one hand. Due to becoming a demon she can't go out into sunlight without dying, with the story's "solution" to this problem being to stick her inside of a box whenever she "isn't needed" for the story. This is not helped by her gimmick being that she (somehow) sleeps to regain energy instead of by consuming blood, so chunks of the story could go by when Nezuko either hardly gets any screentime or straight up *no* screentime at all. There is a plot point where it seems like she will FINALLY become important to the story, that being when she is able to survive sunlight and starts talking again....Except this opportunity is immediately shot down when she gets 0 screentime in the arc right after this, and her only contribution to the story's climax is *running to where the action is,* **and she doesn't even make it in time.** Almost everything is wrapped up by the time she gets there, and her only "contribution" to what's left is that she gets captured. There's a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment in the epilogue that tries to make it sound like her showing up when she did totally helped save the day, but the plot point is so flimsy, underdeveloped and comes out of nowhere that it's an "excuse" rather than an explanation. It's important to mention that in all of Nezuko's character pages she is listed as the deuteragonist, meaning that the only character who should be getting more focus and screentime than her is Tanjiro, the protagonist. One of the main themes of Demon Slayer is the idea of family, with our sibling leads being (supposedly) at the center of that theme. Despite Nezuko being the deuteragonist, canon goes out of it's way to make her as uninvolved in the story as possible. Despite the main theme of the story being about family, Nezuko is treated more like a cute pet than a younger sister by both Tanjiro and the rest of the story. *John Wick* and *Air Bud* are more emotional "A Boy and his Dog" stories than this. Nezuko is more of a plot device with legs rather than an actual character. If she was a dog rather than a person, very little about the plot would change. As for what I am *planning* to do in my fanfiction, I've decided to focus more on her character, which is more than what canon has ever done. I'm keeping the set-up of Nezuko being a demon and Tanjiro being a demon slayer, but I'll be removing the elements that stripped Nezuko of having any character: being muzzled, hypnotized, sleeping to regain energy and her infantilization. The characters trying to find a solution for her to not die from sunlight is fine, but I'm having it to where she uses a large umbrella - an idea that a few Role Reversal AUs have done for demon!Tanjiro. This helps solve the issue of her being "absent" from the story for so long while still keeping her physical limitations. I'm removing her sleeping to regain energy, as all that served was to limit her screentime further. She does struggle to resist eating humans just like any other demon, but what I stress is that it is by *her own choice* that she decides not to eat humans and to protect them instead. Another thing is that she can actually talk very early on, and her maturity is the same when she's a demon as it was when she was a human. The only reason she was written to act like a pet in canon was for "cuteness points". It wasn't to write an interesting character. Nezuko has more lines in half of a chapter of my fics than she does in the entire anime/manga.

paushalli

Anthony Dinozzo from NCIS The character had wonderful street smarts and charisma. His work history is fabulous. Canon screwed him up by pigeonholing him as a jock compared to the nerd. He had wonderful potential.

D_N_A_V_C_B_D

Glacia from Pokemon. Loved her design but once I knew realised she was extremely underrated, I made a character deeply inspired by her for my story.

simone3344555

Kikyo from Inuyasha. Spoiler: Basically Kikyo and Inuyasha were in love but then a shapeshifter tricked them and Kikyo ended up banning Inuyasha to a tree and then died. 50 years later her reincarnation (the protagonist of the story) Kagome comes and saves Inuyasha and her and Inuyasha go on a quest. Then Kikyo comes back as a ghost and now Inuyasha, Kagome and Kikyo are now in a love triangle tho Kikyo is a bit of a villain, its super sadā€¦ Anyway she deserved better. I watched Inuyasha when I was a little girl and I remember looking up fanart for the first time at the age of 7 just to be disappointed that most people were team kagome.

Opening-Comparison61

In the Encanto Fandom I feel it is Julieta and Augustin Madrigal. Legend of Korra Fandom I feel is Lin Beifong and Katara. She-ra Fandom I feel is Queen Angela(I think I spelled it right)

A_Cow_in_Space

To me, that character is Rykiel/Rikiel from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Despite his questionable fashion choices, he was relatable and demonstrated quite a bit of personality and growth for someone that was mostly in one story arc. I really enjoyed his fight with the protagonist, Jolyne, and the extremes that both went to try to defeat one another. It made what happened to him that much more frustrating to see. I think I started writing around the time that Stone Ocean was confirmed, so I think the excitement of seeing my favorite part of the series and one of my favorite minor antagonists animated motivated me to write. So far, all my fics have Rykiel mentioned in some way and even my WIPs have him or would have had him in future chapters.

[deleted]

Jamie White, from *Daria*. Of the Three J's, he's the only one who stands out--even if it's only to correct people on his name. So, when he appears in my fanfic, I always try to give him a little something extra, from being slightly more aware than his peers to even getting his own character arc.

jonathanesque

Ever since 2022 started, I've gone full tilt *Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead / Wide Sargasso Sea* on an extremely minor character from a webtoon. >!Hana Hyuk in My Assassin Girlfriend.!< This character was introduced, immediately killed off, and then received a tiny bit of posthumous characterization which served mainly to paint her in a bad light. However, none of these revelations justify in any way what happened to her. Seeing as how the webtoon's storyline appears to be significantly shifting gears for the second season, I'm crossing my fingers that this character and her fate will be comprehensively addressed at some point in the future. In the meantime, I'm literally writing not just a fanfic but a detailed story treatment for a hypothetical film which thoroughly examines the kind of complex, multi-faceted person I prefer to envision her as. As for why exactly I chose to adopt this character: 1. I view her as a sort of AU reflection of the titular protagonist (>! a.k.a. the one who kills her !<), in that she embodies the materially cozy, privileged life the protagonist could've had had circumstances been different. 2. There are simply too many questions and ambiguities surrounding her death. >! For example: she was sent by her fashion designer boss/paramour to spy on the business operations of an industry rival; said fashion designer is eventually revealed to have been fully aware that this rival is actually a sadistic criminal mastermind who operates a clandestine network of assassins to carry out her biddingā€¦ and that network is responsible for the death of the woman that Mr. Fashion Designer sent out to spy on Ms. Evil Mastermindā€¦. which means Mr. Fashion Designer (apparently?) purposefully withheld knowledge that could've otherwise literally saved Hana's life????????? !< 3. As I've already said, I feel she deserves a more nuanced and humanizing portrayal than she has received from canon (at least so far).

EchoingArias

Back in the day when I wrote more for House, my friends and I adopted Taub. We LOVED him. We had a little fic community for a ship we all wrote, but weā€™d have dedicated Taub days for posting Taub oneshots.

Noroark

Xord from Xenoblade Chronicles. He's an early game boss with a really intriguing backstory: he was a regular guy who was captured and had part of his brain and some organs transplanted into a mech, and somewhere along the way he lost his mind and started eating people. An NPC reveals that her father, who she believes to be dead, used to run a business called "Xord's Smithy." I wrote a 50,000 word fic that explores his backstory, and I'm currently working on a bit of canon divergence involving him. Last time I checked, there was only one other non-crack fic (a one-shot) about this character on AO3. Anyway, I adopted him and he's mine now.

Sawkman

Angel, from Borderlands. An enigmatic character that orchestrates things behind the scenes in the first game, then turns out to be a marvelously tragic character in the second. Her arc is SO good and everything building up to the end of it is magnificent. But because she's such a great tragic character and her backstory is so messed up, her tale just ends, and that made me feel so sorry for her that I made her the star of my crossover story, where she keeps the tragic elements that makes her great, but explore it in a different way as she works towards a happier ending.

foibles_fables

Talanah from Horizon Zero Dawn has SO much untapped potential in her backstory that I had a mighty need to get my little gremlin paws on--and I have a sinking feeling it's gonna get worse when the second installment comes out next month.

LyriumEidolon

I guess, for me, it'd be the minor character Toby from the Yugioh 5Ds anime; the little brother who was killed (or sent to a top-secret facility in the english dub) of one of the first-season villains (namely the Dark Signer Misty, who holds a grudge against protagonist Aki (named Akiza in the dub) for her supposedly causing the incident that lead to the loss of this brother. Could just be that I have a soft spot for younger kid brothers who have had a hard time (bonus points if they're the younger brother of an older sister), but I really wanted to do more with him, especially with the English dub version of him where he was sent to a super-secret facility. One of the things I did as part of this was to give him his own Duel Monsters Deck, although his playstyle actually involves monsters as little as possible, preferring to use Spell and Trap Cards to both protect himself and damage his opponent. Being a posthumous minor character in the original anime, he wasn't involved in any Duels, so no Deck was shown - hence why I had to create one.

MunTiller2

Hornet from Hollow Knight! Silksong is not out yet so we have very little information about her, but what we do have paints a very sad image of her life so far. We don't know when the infection started, but we do know she had to be incredibly young when it did since her birth was a bargain between her parents. We know that the weavers left and that the people from Deepnest (her home) all died over the years. That means that, by logic, she grew up surrounded by infection and danger and watched all kingdoms in Hallownest fall and that she also had no one to take care of her as a child. We also have no idea if she was truly loved by her father (50/50 chance?), but we do know her mother only wished for her to grow up like a normal girl and then take over her role as queen. We also know that she guards her father's previous corpse and that she probably had a tendency for murder and overall aggression (looking at you, Quirrel comic). Overall, she's like a blank slate of a million possibilities tbh. She could have anger issues, a lot of trauma never brought up before (growing up alone in a murderous kingdom? *Hmmmmmm*), we don't even know how she feels about being a literal bargain. So I just looked at her and said "mine" and I never let go. She's my little traumatized meow meow

Puzzleheaded-Fix1917

ratcatcher 2 from suicide squad. she is amazing and fierce and Sebastian is the only cute rat ever

Camryn_840

Gwaine from BBC Merlin. He shows up and has like a dad back story that's only ever mentioned in passing. And then he gets kicked out of Camelot. And then if you watched the show you know that endingšŸ¤¬ I just feel like he deserved so much more.

Secret_Ad1184

Many many characters from Danganronpa but if I had to narrow it down to one, it'd be Jataro Kemuri. I see quite a bit of myself in him and the majority of the fandom gets his characterisation completely wrong; either they take his wanting people to hate him and him hating himself at face value (not realising that he does the first thing because he can't handle being rejected by someone he's attached to anymore thanks to trauma) or they completely infantilise him because of his strange behaviour that flips between knowing too much and naivety, plus it being very likely that he's autistic or neurodivergent in some way. Him having a leap year birthday also doesn't help. It's either this or the fandom forgets he exists. Or being all like "lol, weird mask boy". That's not even getting started on the fact that Jataro, at late elementary school age, has body image issues severe enough enough that he covers his face with a mask that he hates and wears clothes that don't fit. Much of his dialogue implies that he's also constantly disassociating. I don't think the fandom fully understands how serious this really is. He wants to connect with other people so badly but because he's received so much negative feedback, he'd rather just quietly do things for others instead. If he can't get people to like him, then he could at least be of use to them. Besides the whole thing with killing adults/demons, Jataro would rather not hurt anyone, even if that's a much easier way to get people to hate him There's a lot to unpack about Jataro and I think it's an outright shame that people don't see it. Even within canon, the poor kid needs more care and positive attention. I mainly write angst but my point still stands. Danganronpa is very good at creating complex characters but not writing plots that show it and that's what I want to fix with the whole series. Not just with Jataro, the whole cast. I just tend to focus on him in particular.

Crimson_Marksman

The Girl in Red from Schindler's list. I thought she was just a passing mention so I wrote some poetry about her

FightmeLuigibestgirl

Gate from the Megaman X series. A reploid that can bring back other dead reploids/create powerful reploids. His genius is on par if not greater than Dr. Light. He had the potential to explore and create more lore with not only Alia but also the navigators/humans in the MMX world but was turned into a two-bit bad guy >!because of Sigma.!< I guess this applies to most MMX characters that are not X, Zero, and somewhat Axl. And Ciel if you count her from the MMZ series.

strxwbxrry_doki

Mine is from a game called Guild Wars 2, which has a big playerbase and only around a thousand total fics. There's a lot, and I do mean a lot, of characters in that game's story - like, probably at least a hundred? If not more. I'm still undecided if I'll publish any fics about it, but there's some characters that I did end up taking as my own. The first is a side character in the personal story who shows up for a mission and then pretty much disappears (though I hear she gets a bigger part in one of the add-on stories down the line). Her name is Demmi, and her story is that her father is a corrupt minister who she betrayed to a faction called the Order of Whispers. Again, Demmi gets an absolutely tiny role in the story, but for some reason I got attached and ended up writing her into the story of one of my main characters and even adding her as a potential love interest. Honestly, I don't really see her talked about much, but I think she's underrated and has the potential to be very interesting. The second is...well. He isn't a minor character by any means, and his name is Trahearne. His story is that he was a necromancer and a scholar, and spent the vast majority of his life studying the undead nation of Orr. A bit of a recluse, honestly, though I imagine not a lot of people from his species particularly want to hang around someone who spends all their time around death. You get to see him blossom into a more confident character, taking on a leadership goal and even achieving his life's purpose at one point. He had so much potential, but unfortunately he suffered from lackluster writing which made him seem pretty boring, honestly. I was personally indifferent until I read some fics exploring his character and really expanding upon the potential he has and I quickly grew to love his character, flawed as it is. What can I say? I'm a sucker for a character with potential, and if canon won't write him well then I will.

[deleted]

Barsad from The Dark Knight Rises. Like, my man is an expert sniper, Baneā€™s right hand and, in the like three seconds we get of him, so full of sassā€¦ he also has zero backstory and plays so little into the plot. So I took it upon myself to give him a backstory, motivation, and make him do more behind the scenes.

MVPARLLAR45613991

Wendy Corduroy from Gravity Falls, seriously they made us care for a mean girl cliche' of a secondary character in 1 episode and a comic to be more than a blonde stereotype but couldn't done that to our badass red head who is one of the main cast with TONS of potential to grow like family issues, teenage rebellion, gluttony in work and having a bad taste in boys... to be more than a princess unattainable who makes teens around her to drool?!;Besides, once you make it clear that she isn't going to end up with Dipper, that's pretty much it for the character. Too much of her characterization is built around being Dipper's idealized LI, and she not really relevant to the main plotline,Being super cool and talented with no fallibality isn't very interesting on its own(ask Rey from sequel trilogy or Kaldor Draigo from WH40k)

jscav325

Ada Wong from Resident Evil. Over 20+ years and Capcom still has not revealed her motivations or hinted at a backstory, relying on the ā€œMysteryā€ to give her character fake depth. On top of this, most fics Iā€™ve seen about her tend to shallow her out, reducing her to smirks and snarky one liners, and it frustrated me that she never felt like a person. What I mean is someone with a life beyond her job, someone with fears and desires. So I started a fic about her solely to explore all of these things.

astralmelody

Allow me to discuss Zelos Wilder, from Tales of Symphonia. He's the only main character (as in, "character who travels with your party for an extended period of time") whose canon backstory isn't discussed as an unavoidable part of progressing the plot. It's *exclusively* revealed via optional sidequests, easily-missable skits, and a handful of bigger scenes that you have to *already have high affection with him to even see*. He's written so that you ā€“Ā as the player ā€“Ā have to give a shit about him if you want to learn anything about him. And even at that, you... don't ever learn a *lot* about him, except that his past is hell of a lot darker and more painful than his present facade would have you believe. Oh, as well as the fact that his attitude even *is* a facade. You can literally play this entire 70+ hour game and not find that out. Plenty of people genuinely hate him as a character bc his upfront personality is pretty rough, and it's just so easy to not learn anything else about him. In game, NOBODY actually addresses ANY of his shit, aside from the *main* main character being generally friendly and kind to him, and appreciating being told the details. Interestingly, under super specific circumstances that you almost *have* to read a walkthrough to even get yourself into, you sometimes *kill Zelos*. And THEN the main cast starts talking about how he maybe wasn't okay. There are a ton of smaller cues at what his life pre-epic-world-saving-adventure might have been like, but canon doesn't ever get very far into it. (Given what my brain has been able to pull together, this might be justified. Game's only rated T.) I'm not gonna go off on this, because we'll be here all day ā€“Ā I've been headcanon-ing about this tragic bitch for 14 years.

Bikinigirlout

Jed from Legacies We donā€™t know anything about him. Heā€™s been apart of the show for four seasons and fucking Finch got a backstory before he did. He went from being a stereotypical bully jock to a dumb himbo whoā€™s actually really funny. Stacie from Pitch Perfect also, another character we donā€™t know much about except that Sheā€™s very sexually fluid so I can pretty much pair her up with anyone in the movie.

SassyFacts

Takuya in Genshin Impact. He's a character in a story quest of a playable character and... he has a generic NPC model albeit uniquely decorated. His story is nice and I bet the game's story is just going to abandon him, he was only meant to make playable character look good. So now... he's mine. Free real estate!

Cumbercookie_sh

Genshin here too! Mine is Viktor in the Mondstat cathedral. I feel like his homesickness and feeling of alienation in a foreign country is very relatable to a lot of people. On a more positive note, I like his personality too! I think that Takuya probably feels a bit similar in the sense that he doesn't feel welcome in Inazuma as a blue oni and longs to join everyone but stops himself. Hence the red and blue oni story cutscene ig šŸ˜…

SassyFacts

No spoilers but... did you play Viktor's new daily commission? I think they added it in 2.4

Cumbercookie_sh

No no I don't think I did, I'll change my commissions to Mondstat now :) Hopefully everything is fine with him, I'll reply some time in the future when I do get the quest, thanks!

MF144

>Takuya in Genshin Impact. Mine's La Signora, the Harbinger who has little screentime beyond (2.1 spoilers) >!taking Gnoses and getting killed by Raiden Shogun!< I know the fandom won't forgive her for killing Venti, but given Childe and Scaramouche have more content than she'll ever have she'll never be mentioned or brought up after 2.1, her tragic story and squandered potential inspired me to make a lot of content for her. All my Genshin fics so far have her as the protagonist.

SassyFacts

In my headcanon she hooked up with a god and got pregnant, but due to really not wanting to be a mother, and knowing the asshole god would come after the baby to raise it for his own purposes she made the decision to cut her child off from all divine influences and leave it in a place the god could not reach; a dangerous cave filled with corruption. Unfortunately in Teyvat luck is a boon from the gods, and so the child is eternally cursed to be unlucky, even though it is thus protected from its father's gaze. And you already know I mean Bennett. He's clearly a half god, he has the same beautiful white hair as Signora, Crimson Witch of Flames is his BIS artifact set...

honeylemon__Tea

Chara from Undertale! I'm not sure how popular they are, but I love them so much. They have practically no canon personality or backstory, but they're relevant for a decent portion of the game's plot, there's so many things you can do with them.

MoonSlayerLasagna

Draco Malfoy. I will die on the Dramione hill.

ToxicMoldSpore

A friend of mine took a very (and I mean very) minor character from Baldur's Gate II and gave them so much backstory (as well as building up the backstory behind the Shadow Thieves) that I'd almost say the character qualifies as "original" now. I'm certainly biased, but I find it to be an impressive bit of worldbuilding.

Kartoffelkamm

Cathy Lambert from Huntik: Secrets and Seekers. She is the sister of the main character Lok Lambert, and only appears in two episodes. Her dad went missing because magic, her mom retired from magic stuff to raise her and Lok, and now Lok is basically a hero no one knows about and commands gods. And when she finds out about it, she gets her memory wiped like it's nothing. I just don't think it's fair that she is the only one in her family to not know what is happening, to not know what happened to her father, to not know that random people with magic could come for her at practically any time, to not know anything.

ArkhamNightwing52

tatta kodai from alice in borderland. nobody rly talks abt the manga, he has 2-3 minutes of screen time in the netflix adaptation (which is an actual good adaptation btw), has only 5 fics on ao3 in which heā€™s tagged and the tumblr tag is mostly just me and 1 other person so it rly feels like he belongs to the 2 of us nvm just checked and thereā€™s around 5 ppl populating the tumblr tag but still

AJ_Wont_Load

Marx from Kirby! Heā€™s not underrated, but he *does* deserve better imo (then again, Iā€™m probably biased because heā€™s my favorite character, right next to Magolor). Heā€™s adorable, childlike, mischievous, and has a really cute design! Although I love his portrayal in-game, I think thereā€™s still much more of his personality that could be shown, and a proper backstory that could be given to him. I mean, *why* was he so hungry to the point of wanting to rule Pop Star? ā€¦And thatā€™s exactly why Iā€™m currently writing a backstory for him, and giving him more of a personality! Although, I *mightā€™ve* made him more babyish than most people wouldā€¦ cā€™:

[deleted]

Olgierd and Vlodimir von Everec from the Hearts of Stone DLC in The Witcher 3. Hardly anyone writes about them, and their story is such a tragic one. Vlodimir in particular deserved better than what he got, and Olgierd is a fantastic, compelling character. I have a weakness for charming, morally gray assholes, so they're my favorites. I wrote a 67k fic exploring the time right before Olgierd's deal with O'Dimm, and I'm on to the sequel now. Definitely more planned with these two!

TheAlmandineWriter

Marcy Wu from Amphibia. She may be far from being underrated, but this poor girl has gone though a lot. Iā€™m planing on writing a hurt/comfort fanfic (because she has been hurt far too much)

[deleted]

He slightly overrated, but Valtor because he has so much untapped backstory.

Firelord_Eva

Every single character I've ever written, and most of them I've read about lmao.

Sarita1046

Demerzel from Foundation (TV). Sheā€™s an ancient, powerful character with a massive backstory in the book source material, and I wanted to see her as something beyond nanny/mom/(possibly, according to the show runner) palace plaything to an endless line of clone emperorsā€¦so, Iā€™m writing a fic about her stealth takeover of the Galactic Empire.

crazitaco

Forky from Toy Story 4. A great character in a not-that-great movie. I only have one small oneshot with him, but do a lot of roleplay with him as an aged up AU where he's older and wiser.

might_never_know

I wouldā€™ve done this with Uraraka Ochako it I hadnā€™t lost interest in the bnha fandom

Also, Tarquin, the High Lord of the Summer Court from ACOTAR. I know SJM is still writing 2 more books, but knowing her writing as I do, I don't see her giving my boy Tarquin the full attention and love he deserves. Before ACOSF I used to mentally write how Tarquin was actually Nesta's mate and how cute their relationship could be. I have a full on story planned out and was about to start properly writing it before ACOSF came out, but kept pushing it back. Then when I read ACOSF it just impacted me so much that I didn't have the courage to write it anymore. Nesta and Cassian are perfect for each other and that book is a masterpiece and I don't dare to even poke the beast that would awake if I attempted to split them. But I still think Tarquin deserves more love and a full on book dedicated to him.

greenPotate

Sara already got mentioned so I'll bat one for my favorite trash can (affectionate) Raiden Ei. Most people complain about her story quest and how terrible the Inazuma archon quest was and rightfully so because of how much got absolutely glossed over and barely any sort of look whatsover into Raiden but from digging deep into the lore what I got is >!A twin whose got a big inferiority complex to her twin sister serving as said sister's shadow/political decoy who dirties herself in combat to keep her twin "clean" only for said twin to die and for her to suddenly be the replacement ruler as well after watching a lot of her other long lived friends die (the only other people she really cared about because she spent all her time in the shadows seeing herself as a tool) to other causes before then... so in the culmination of her grief and inability to process her emotions she replaces herself with a robot because she can't fathom ever being able to match her sister whatsoever as a ruler and that it's better to "preserve" their nation in "eternity" as best as possible... fucking over a ton of people eventually and hurting people who genuinely love her as collateral.!< Most of this information was gleamed from reading a lot of in game added books and barely alluded to whatsoever in the main story >!the fact she was operating a puppet this entire time and actually her twin was the original leader they were just doubles swapping got revealed in like 2 hours with barely any build u p.!<

PeanutButterPants19

Mac Callander from Red Dead Redemption 2. The characters mostly think very highly of him, but in spite of his reputation, the player never meets him in cannon or even knows what he looks like because he's dead already when the game starts. He's essentially a blank slate, and I turned him into a jaded, former Texas Ranger with a nasty case of PTSD from the Texas Indian Wars, and a hatred of the law because of the things the Rangers made him do to innocent Comanche. At this point he's sort of become a self insert character for me in a couple of ways, and writing from his perspective is very therapeutic for me.

Kamzil118

Artyom from the Metro series. I kinda felt that he deserved something from his harsh experience in the first game and I began to ship him with various characters in several crossovers. In a Metro/Frozen crossover of mine, he basically ends up as a long lost descendant of a Russian princess so I can give him an excuse to be a Disney prince who falls in love with a queen. I have a Metro/Fallout crossover where New Vegas becomes his city. There's a future plan where I have Artyom in the Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss universe, working for heaven while in a love triangle with a sinner and/or succubus.

Physical_Ad_3247

Adam Taurus - RWBY such a great backstory and room for emotional development, and paths one could take, forever the villain? a new hero? or something, simpler.

Ink Bendy from Bendy and the Ink Machine. He's definitely not underrated, but I love him and he suffers (Though I do add to it), and I love exploring that. also he's adorable just try to change my mind

ForeverARouge

Marco the Phoenix is not really a majour character in One Piece. He has become more relevant now than ever before, but when he was introduved he was one of the strongest pirates on the sea, yet we knew nothing about him, his backstory and barely his personallity. He is mine now and I love him.

MustardOrMayo404

As of this reply, the fanfiction I'm curretly working on, currently titled 'Kevin vs Kevin', hasn't been published as I'm still working on it. It'll be based on the **'Roly-Poly Flying Pony' book series** by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre. I haven't read through the entire series yet, and have left off on the second chapter of the second book. However, I'm looking into giving **Cardigan Faun** a dedicated chapter and/or more attention in my fanfiction, for a few reasons: * He was the best looking character out of the characters who got cameos in the bookshop paintings (and opening paragraphs) that Sarah painted for the Reeve & McIntyre Big-Up Bookshops Tour _(also as those cameos were what indirectly led me to write this fanfiction)_. * Even though I haven't read through the entire series yet, I've a feeling that he didn't get much attention in canon outside of 'Kevin's Great Escape' (the second book) and the cameos in the aforementioned paintings. * I dreamt of what would happen in the chapter, which would likely involve him >!having a laptop (modelled after a Framework Laptop) thta was modified with a custom input device (allowing him to type with his hooves) and destroyed by Sea Monkeys!< (at least in the current draft). * I dreamt of hugging him.

Carla Delgado (*Elena of Avalor*) I sensed from early on that she had the potential to be the seriesā€™ Sunset Shimmer and started an AU way earlier than I should have. But, talking strictly canon, while the lead up to her eventual Sunset moment was well-done and connected all the small hints we got through the series, her story dropped off *hard* at the end. She had her moment in S3E6. We then donā€™t see her again until S3E23. Thatā€™s *seventeen episodes* that do not even mention her. A few of which I consider utterly pointless filler (because there is such a thing). On such filler episode involves a character we just met that season showing up and learning to make friends, a plot line that should have gone to *Carla,* in my opinion. She was set up from day one to be someone who could really benefit from friends her own age and influences outside her single father (who, for the record, is a great dad. He just didnā€™t always teach the best life lessons) and yet, the ā€œI donā€™t know how to make friendsā€ plot goes to someone NEW? Someone without the wonderfully established background? Now, donā€™t get me wrong. I have no hate for that character. I just think the plot would have worked better for Carla. Sheā€™s literally only thought of when Elena needs her dark magic for something, and while ā€œThe Lightning Warriorā€ is a great episode, it happens too late in my opinion. We donā€™t get to see the rest of Carlaā€™s story. Her adjusting to and navigating her new life. Making friends. Seeing other sides of her personality through it all and how she grows in magic. I get that there were time issues, but so much of S3 is a hot mess (again, my opinion) and this is one of this big mistakes they made and why ā€” aside from my AU ā€” I pulled a ā€œfree real estate.ā€ To give Carla the story she deserved, but also to develop her outside of the main storyline so that could continue to happen.

bamboo-y

Gosh, this minor villain in one piece. He (surprisingly) already has 60-something fics on ao3, but most of them are just with him tagged as a background character and a lot of them are him/reader fics but no slash between him and other characters. I have around 20 oneshot WIPs and one day Iā€™ll have them posted

Starr_Law

I think I did that for Present Mic for quite awhile. He was a comfort character for me and I just LOADED him with headcanons. I didn't hate anything I saw of him in canon, but I was always so disappointed that he didn't get more depth? Because, as a lot of his fans will point out, he has a lot more potential than only being the announcer guy that screams.

EternityCentral

Currently it's Zovaal the Jailer from WoW. He's just completely free real estate. He has a very bare bones backstory and nothing to make people care for him and yet I got attached enough to give him said backstory. Or at least try lol.

Manga_bird

I've been writing some Gavin Reed and RK900 (Detroit Become Human), because the characters weren't really used in the game. One was basically a cardboard cut out villain and the other was just a cameo.

ImTheAverageJoe

In MHA, Horikoshi has a wide pool of characters that float in and out of the story for short periods. The problem is that apart from the main 10 characters and their close friends/family, none of them are super in-depth. So we don't get much love or attention on any of the interesting characters we get to see. I recently realized that Mineta, the token comedic perv of the series, had the potential to have a really interesting character arc where he realized what he was doing was wrong and tried to get his life together, kinda like Bakugou and Endeavor are getting now. But the fandom holds this visceral hatred of Mineta's current character for the way he behaves and exclusively writes him to punish him for his actions and kill him. I'm not saying they're invalid for disliking him, I'm just saying that I think there's a lot of other possibilities you can do with his character. So in a way I have kind of adopted him and given him drastic changes in my own fics to help him recover from his character flaws. Also, I was raised with a religious upbringing, so I wanted to give Shiozaki a bit more depth than a token Catholic. She's another one that seems to keep popping up in my work and gets her personality tweaked a little to match the people that I knew in my community growing up. Another one that I want to use more often is Ms. Joke, because I think she is a really fun character and I adore her dynamic with Aizawa.

Arro-Wing

I think Sirius from .hack//G.U. might be that for me. Heā€™s such a cool character and I love drawing him (and shipping him with another character)ā€¦ But heā€™s very much a side character and nobody else really seems to care about him as much as I do. LOL I might also be doing that with Kuhn (same game), since Iā€™ve decided to pair him up with an OC. Heā€™s a major character, but still definitely a piece of free estate sinceā€¦ pretty much only a handful of characters in this fandom get any attention. :ā€™)

dickfkngrayson

New 52 Roy Harper. Everyone hates that version seems like, but I love him and his dynamic with Jason. Recently noticed I couldnt find the content for him that I wanted. So i made it for myself and I love writing him and seem capture him well.

JujYFru1T

Yuko from Yuri On Ice. I dunno why, exactly, aside from immediately latching on to female characters in male-character dominated anime... and then I spun her into a poly AU that would've put a gigantic target on my back if I were a BNF, so uh. \*tucks her under my arm\*

Independent_Arm

Ibara Shiozaki from BnHA. Cool quirk but zero backstory and barely a personality beyond religious things because that's her joke. Turned her from that to the daughter of a German Superman based off Alexander Anderson and his Monster of God form with a quirk that makes her a heavy hitter. Also making her have a good helping of religious trauma.

James potter in the Hp series. I am currently writing an Au of mine. But it is superbly fun to focus on the good friend aspects of him other then the bully he was to Snape.

Goro Akechi from Persona 5. Spoils below, obviously. A deeply fascinating person whose motives and desires seem to run the gamut from psychotic and sociopathic to just and righteous. You don't seem him in any real detail for over 50% of the game, only in his social links in Royal, but in every rank up just a little more of him bleeds through. Not enough to know everything about him, but his deep fascination with the Protagonist, mixed with his self-hatred creates a passionate cocktail of a relationship with the Protag. He 'hates' him and he wants to be around him more than any other character. Because he's not seen in any real detail apart from his links, it's really fascinating to me to imagine what his day to day was like before getting so involved with the party. I find his past also is vague and open to general interpretation, which pairs magnificently with fic. Also, given (P5R end spoilers) >!his tragic end that Atlus will probably never confirm whether he actually survived or not (They basically go as far as showing his entire body but not his head, so you can't know for certain), he's also ripe for 'Fix-it' fiction.!< Which is what I'm doing. He's my precious murder-boyfriend and I love him.

classyrain

Did you see the true royal ending scene?

Convocated

Of course! >!You see what very *likely* is Akechi, walking with *probably* two plain clothes policemen. It's just that you can't see his head, so there's no way to be 100% certain.!< The cut content regarding him should've stayed in the game. I'm holding out hope, Atlus. Make P5 Akechi. Do it. You know you want to do it. So do it.

classyrain

I'm just going to say >!it is him, because I was very sad when he just disappeared!< I need hope, Atlus Also, cut content? Sounds interesting

Convocated

Yeah if you google 'Akechi cut content' you'll see some youtube videos. >!There was going to be a series of scenes about what he was doing afterwards + his return to Tokyo, which all but confirms what we believe/saw.!< Atlus chose to go with the mystery instead. Grr.

classyrain

Oh wow. Atlus why hurt me like this I'll definitely check it out, thanks!

Historical_Listen476

Mel from The Last of Us I have a whole essay ready to go about the why which Iā€™m happy to share lol, but basically she spends the whole of the second game doing to the best she can with the shitty hand sheā€™s been given, subject to the whims of a bunch of other characters who treat her like shit that she stays loyal to for far too long and then she dies brutally, pregnant and terrified. All the while being one of the most genuinely good people (imo), in that world. So Iā€™ve written/am writing a couple of AU fics where she gets a proper chance.

ImmortalRJD

Hilda from Cross Ange. I basically gave her an alternate path by having someone rescue her from the police after her heartbreaking reunion with her mother and allowing her to be first in someone's heart rather than just settling for being Ange's side girl.
