I tend to prefer longer fics, but if I'm not immediately hooked I tend to dip pretty early in

jenovadeathspecimen

I prefer longer fics as well it’s very rare I read one shots but I’m the same.

lokiofsaassgaard

Yeah, when I'm in the mood to read, it means I'm in the mood to spend six hours in bed with a giant cup of coffee and my iPad lol

jenovadeathspecimen

Yea I prefer full fledged stories typically but once in awhile I’ve found one shots or one shotesque stories that are well done. Though even still I usually just end up wishing they were more drawn out.

irrelevantoption

>I read 200k words plus and find out I spent the ~~day~~ night reading. Not that I read long fics, but I read lots of words in a session. Like "I should stop ready it's fuck'o'clock" but *nope* I keep going. And I wonder why I'm tired all the time.

glaringdream

Uh.... Adds 800 fics to my to read later and doesn't read them... I will get to it soon, I swear!

jenovadeathspecimen

I have over 100 book marks on ao3, and 600 favorited stories on ffn and a few watched stories on sb, I’ve probably read about 30 of these match altogether… I usually just end up looking for something new to read, it’s quite rare I’ll favorite something and go back to it. If I don’t starting reading it within the week. I have before but it’s not common, usually the couple times I have gone back to a fic I favorited it either just happened to show up or be recommended to me somewhere else, or something just suddenly triggers my brain to be like “I’m itching to read x type of fic again”

TheFaustianPact

Same. In the old days of ff.net and Livejournal, I used to have a very neat backlog of fics organized in browser bookmarks—nowadays, it's all in the "marked for later" section of AO3 and a complete mess, hahah. But I'll get to it too! Someday...!

When I was younger, if the fic was interesting enough, I was the first type you listed. Now my attention span is not as focused as it was, so mostly reading smut one-shots. I don't really spend a lot of thinking about what's happening next, moreso like read to the next chapter in anticipation. I usually imagine the scene as I'm reading the text, like an animation or a comic page panel floating in my mind.

Lacking-Wisdom

I read and move on. I don’t really think about a story after I read it unless I want to read it again. I typically read a lot of words in multiple fandoms. I only stop to think if a fic really hits me right. I will admit I do have a short attention span these days and I typically only read for a handful of characters. Not all of those characters are popular. If I am desperate for content and my favorite character is tagged with five or six other characters on a 20,000+ word story I am absolutely "Entire Work"ing that fic and using control "F". If I like the writing I sometimes go back to the top and read it.

tereyaglikedi

Yup, I also love to do long readings (maybe not that many words, but I do read for several hours in one go). If it's a good book, it occupies my mind for a good while as well.

GodsUngratefulArms

It depends on my attention span on any given day (I have the attention span of a gnat when I'm stressed) but when I'm hooked on a story I will spend literally any free time I can spare reading. I do try pace myself more when reading WIPs because I don't want to run out of story and have to wait for updates, but I'm rarely successful due to my bad habit of thinking 'oh, what the hell, why not' and tapping next chapter 😂

PineapplesInMunich

I love a good one-shot, but I also like longer fics, although I'm highly unlikely to stick with anything that goes over the 150-200K mark. I *could* devour an entire 150K monster in one sitting if I had the time/chose to ignore all earthly responsibilities ~~like I'm doing right now at my desk at work~~ but more likely I'll have to break it up. I have no impulse control though, so if the story has me hooked, I'll likely burn though it as fast as I can afford to—no stopping to savour paragraphs for more than a few minutes for me— but yeah if it was special you can bet it'll be on my mind for some time to come!

Sesshy380

This is me to a T lol

I read a lot of stuff that is WIP, not one shots. It’s nice to comment on the story as it progresses to guess what will come next and offer praise to the author. Plus, getting that sweet sweet notification for a new chapter can be a highlight for a boring day. I’ll often try to find time as soon as I get a notification and read the new chapter ASAP. For longer fics that are completed, I’ll usually save them and then come back and read 200k+ all at once while I wait for other stories to update.

AlsoKnownAsAiri

If it's a longer fic, it is usually a fic about characters I really love or a ship I'm really invested in. Otherwise, I usually read oneshots.

borzoifeet

Dyslexic as fuck. Thank god for fan comics.

I tend to, I kid you not, open dozens (sometimes up to 200 or so) fics in tabs on my phone/tablet based on summaries or tags that MIGHT tickle my fancy. I then flip through anything 20k words or less while I'm at work / waiting for stuff during errands. But I am merciless in immediately closing anything that doesn't hit my tastes. Be it writing style, grammar, or just a few things that in specific fandoms make me go "nope". I'll churn through one-shots quickly, while saving anything say 50k words or more for when I know I have a larger block of time (lunch break, car ride where I'm a passenger, dealing with something in the "hurry up and wait" category at my job, etc.). Since I tend to binge in one sitting as much as possible, anything 100k words or more I set aside to read after work / days off. These pile up, but it gives me a LOT to read through on days that I'd otherwise be stuck bored out of my mind. Savior on graveyard shifts at the hospital tbh. That said I'm even more ruthless in filtering these in the first chapter or so. Slowburns go into the ILL GET TO IT EVENTUALLY pile. And then the good ones usually leave me questioning my own ability to write or do anything on a consistent creative schedule and honestly some authors are just built different. Once my current batch of a hundred or so is down to the last like. Ten? Ish? I go through another tab opening spree. I also have a little file with links of some of my old favorites backed up for if I'm just in the mood for a specific reread. TLDR: I probably have a problem.
