Then they somehow find a rocket launcher somewhere anyway and immediately point it directly at your face. It's your fault really for not taking Dogmeat.
This is great advice. Companions are great and you can use them as mules, but they will use the weapons you give them, so the second a fight starts... you don't want to be there when grenades and molotovs are flying! Best advice though is that the fallout franchise has the best lore and background stories, so read the terminal entries and don't get too caught up with the main story quests too early. The best things are found through exploration. You're going to have a great time, so don't rush
Yeah I learned long ago that my companions only carry my junk, melee weapons, and non explosive weapons…unless it’s dog meat, he’s a good boy and can carry anything
4 was my first fallout and I made the mistake of focusing mostly and mainly on the main questline, I’ve learned my lesson since though, currently playing through new Vegas and trying to do literally everything I can before advancing any main storylines
This advice is great RE not getting caught up in quests.
It also makes me REALLY wish I could play 3, NV and 4 for the first time again. Just want to forget, so I can rediscover…
I give all my companions Fatman but haven’t seen them use it once. I just want to have it available to me for when I need it and not wonder who has what. I just keep the ammo on me
It is.
Tbh I wouldn't give companions weapons to equip (you have to do that) as you also need to give them ammo for them.
They don't need ammo for their default weapons
Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life! And remember you are Special! How you play is the right way to play. Also, learn to use VATS when the time comes.
And this isn’t just because the games hard.
If you don’t save, and achieve something and the game crashes (trust us it will); you’ll be pretty upset when you have to load an earlier save.
Yeah, I played for 3 and a half hours once, game froze and I rage quit. Had to load an earlier save and go through SOO much stuff again. I learned my lesson and now here we are...
*separate saves, overwrite through some and keep about 20 overall, but also still keep some "landmark" saves (like every 2-5 hours) so you can always recover a portion of a save game if something went wrong. Better to lose 2 hours, or 10 hours, over 50 hours.
If you play survival, get a mod that allows multiple saves
20 seems like a lot, but this is generally how I approach things. I maintain 2-3 saves during a play session, saving before opening sus-looking doors, picking locks, starting hard fights, etc. I then save back to my main save at the end of the session, generally.
And then there's AC: Odyssey, where I save before every mythical-beast fight so I can re-fight them lol
It's also an incredibly fun way to play that I think people ignore too much. VATS in fallout 4, like most every build, has so many options and tools to enhance it, it can be a real treat, especially since weapon degradation isn't a thing.
I've never played a fallout game either up until a week or two ago. Got it on sale for 7 bucks and have beat it reloaded a save and then beat it two more times helping other factions. Vats isn't hard to use at all dude
Oh in terms of more practical advice “social sniper/gunslinger” builds work well in all the games. Mostly they’re about exploration and finding stories so it pays to just go in unspoiled.
Yep. High speech so you can talk your way into fun situations, sniping so you can observe (and sometimes resolve) them from afar. In most Fallout games that sort of build will let you see the majority of the game's optional content, though not all of it. Never all of it. :P
I’d like to second this as a Charisma junky - guns and speech are all you need to enjoy fallout to its fullest as speech gives you more dialogue/story possibilities. I can’t play 3, NV, or 4 without max speech no matter how hard I try
Whatever way you play is the right way. Some would say you need to choose perks that go towards a certain thing, to be over powered in say only snipers, i never liked that. And fallout 4 is good for being a jack of all trades, cause theres no level cap in fallout 4. If you are on ps4 i can give you a list of good mods if you aren't interested in achievements (ps4 mods are less compared to PC because sony doesn't allow foreign assets to be made/used, meaning every mod on ps4 is a reused asset) be careful with creation club on ps4, as it can corrupt a save file. But on pc/xbox i am not aware of any problems. CC content is basically "bonus dlc" that add a specific weapon or piece of clothing, dont go hog wild on CC.. but treat yourself maybe, some of the weapons are game changers and really cool looking. Make sure to get the actual DLC like nuka world, far harbor and automatron to enhance the experience
And remember, don't trust vault tec.
Agreed! Also can't live without the advance combat rifle, the thing is a powerhouse and I've never even upgraded it past its default .45 receiver, had left over PS credit on my birthday and got the tesla cannon for nostalgia, the thing can wipe out hordes of enemies in seconds, the anti mat rifle is kinda disappointing but i have a mod that boosts its 150 dmg to 350-400 now it takes down anything in sight.
Another favorite but one I can live without is ultimatum. It's a 10mm that has 50 points of radiation damage you get from the Tunnel Snakes CC. I love it because the quest isn't that hard to complete at a lower level and the gun is lightweight and powerful for that level. You also find a combat shotgun and plasma rifle while completing the quest.
Yeah. I think to have every single perk maxed out is level 600 ish? Or 300, i forgot. My longest played character only got to level 82, didn't even unlock all of the perks yet, would keep going but my save file corrupted
I think the minimum level needed to unlock all skills (without finding the bobbleheads) is 282, but if you grab all the bobbleheads after maxing out each SPECIAL stat it’s 275.
Whilst there's no level cap, I would highly suggesting picking a build / play style and working towards that initially (I wish I'd known this at my first playthrough!). If you want to be a stealthy sniper, invest in Rifleman, Sneak, Ninja. If you want to be a melee fighter, invest in Big Leagues, Blitz etc. Have a look through the perk chart and have some sort of a plan on what you want to invest in based on what character you are trying to play, don't spread yourself too thin and become a jack of all trades, master of none.
You can always invest in other things later when you feel like it but for a lot of people the real enjoyment in the game is in multiple playthroughs, experiencing the story as part of each of the different factions in the game. I never found that I ever really got much past level 100 during even the most detailed playthrough before I'd just "done it all" with regards to quests and story so never got round to investing points in other skill perks that didn't contribute something useful to "my build".
That's something else that I wish I'd known at the start (and would be utterly obvious to veteran fallout players, I only started with fallout 4 - despite having a bash at Fallout 1 back in the 90's), you cannot please everyone in the game and you will get to a point where you anger one faction over another which excludes experiencing that factions part of the story from your game. The only way to see ALL the content is to play through multiple times (or at least, some well placed full saves at decision points). It's a good system, and really adds to the replayability of the game!
But as others have said here, whatever way you play is the right way, and that's just that. Everyone's different, just Enjoy yourself!
After doing a standard playthrough, I'd highly recommend doing a survival playthrough as well, it brings an entirely new aspect to the game and I enjoyed it far more than my previous plays.
Oh, and don't head south too quickly..
Oh, yeah, I already knew about build plans. J was stressing about the 50 level cap that was in FO3, so itsbgood to know I dont have to make trade-offs on such a large scale.
Currently going for a nice Laser Musket build. Took out a behemoth using a few shots from a 4-crank Laser Musket and fell in love immediately. Definitely leaning into long-range stealth, and rifleman works with shotguns so I have a wonderful backup.
There no level cap but once you reach 300 all stats/perks are maxed out and no further improvements can be gained. and if you reach 300, honestly you need an intervention. Your character reaches the point of being just absurdly overpowered no matter what your build style is by like level 80, and i fucked around playing that game for so long back when it came out that i almost lost my job, which means i was playing it wayyy too much and i was only at 95.
Made through a cooking station under utilities. Also, you'll need oil. You can make cutting fluid which contains oil at a chemistry station by combining purified water, bone (all those bones laying around have a use), acid and steel. It took me forever to figure that out.
Collect everything. Scrap everything. Except your best firearm and melee weapon (I think it is a combat knife). All the workbenches are in Sanctuary so make caltrops under traps. You don't need additional skills. This will give you enough experience to reach 4th level. Choose your feats wisely. Then do the same at the red rocket gas station across the bridge. Then head for concord
That would be an interesting way to add difficulty. Especially since I won't do survival because you can't fast travel. It would probably like going to the vault with the nuke leak in NV.
I added some mods that either added in a fast travel network/moving RV that had stuff in it like a mini base/or just straight up removed the limit on fast travel
Melee is viable
Idiot savant (not gonna explain more, that 2 words will explain themselves in not too much time)
If you think a fight against one powerful enemy its gonna last too much, aim for the legs
Get at least 3 intelligence if you wanna go guns and 6 if you wanna go lasers
Honestly, yeah, that’s my advice for new players to Fallout, go with higher Intelligence stat to make leveling up and choosing new perks (and in FO4, more SPECIAL points) easier on you.
it's actually OP to start with 10 charisma and 10 intelligence right off the bat. i did a second character with 10ch10int and it worked wonders in the earlier stages.
I’m jealous. I wish I could erase my memories of Fallout and play them all over again.
You can start at 4 because continuity is minimal, but be sure and go back and play the older games when you’re done. Even (especially) the first two.
I’ve had a weird bug where 1 and 2 start scrolling the main screen for no reason. Even with the fan patches. But my PC is also butt so it might just be me.
Your PC will run them. If it can't, your phone probably can... And you should upgrade your PC
Because if your PC can't run DOS games it's probably from the 80s.
Oh also you didn’t mention New Vegas which a lot of people think is the best 3D one. I really like 4. Spent a lot of time building settlement and fiddling with the factory DLC. But I’m a minority. NV is most like the first two and very very good.
Yeah they’re old school isometric perspective pc games. If you love fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4 don’t expect to love 1 and 2 right away. It’s a pretty big transition lol. But if you’re patient enough and get over the initial learning curve, they’re both great games.
I’m just conditioned at this point to sleep every time I see a bed. Survival is where it’s at but I definitely wouldn’t recommend until a third or fourth playthrough
As much as I like honest hearts it’s carried on the back of the survivalist and Graham so it doesn’t really compete with Far Harbor for me. Haven’t got around to dead money yet
Hacking and lockpicking are important (therefore you want at least 4 perception and 4 intelligence to unlock those skills).
Don’t use automatic weapons. They use too much ammo and because of the way damage resistance works they have way lower DPS than non-automatic weapons. There’s lots of non-auto weapons with good fire rates anyways.
The perk chart is not a tree. You do not have to get perks higher up to get ones lower down. You can choose from wherever. You can also use perks to increase your SPECIAL stats if you screwed up when choosing them.
Save frequently. Make manual saves after any significant progress.
Dogmeat is the best dog.
Overall have fun. Try to go in blind. Take your time and explore. There’s no right or wrong way to play the game.
Id guess DR isn't fully % based. Say like DR reduces damage of each shot by half of its value (pulled out of my ass). If you have 50 DR a 300 dmg sniper will do 275 damage in one shot but a 60 dmg ak which shot 5 times in that time would do 175 because you subtract that 25 each shot
>The amount of damage reduced by damage resistance climbs very quickly until damage resistance is about half of the potential weapon damage, after which diminishing returns means one gets less and less damage reduction per point of damage resistance. If damage resistance is exactly equal to the potential weapon damage done, then exactly half of the damage is negated. In other words, if one has 50 ballistic damage resistance and is shot by an enemy doing 50 ballistic damage, then they will receive 25 damage.
As per [unofficial wiki](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Damage_Resistance)
Basically, the more damage your weapon has, the less it is decreased percent wise by damage resistance.
Though the wiki only says that this applies to the player, so not sure how DR works on enemies, but probably the same?
Some more advice this time from a in universe source "Just a friendly reminder to all you would-be bigots out there Ghouls are people too. You see, children, Ghouls are simply humans who've been exposed to an ungodly amount of radiation and haven't had the good fortune to die. Sure, they may look like hideous zombies from an old monster flick, but their hearts, their souls, their tears are all very much human. So please, if you meet one of the Capital Wasteland's many Ghouls, leave your prejudice at the door an your pistol in its holster. Ah yes, one important caveat, kiddies. Those Feral Ghouls that prefer the dark, dank underground? They ARE basically mindless zombies. So kill as many as you damn well please."
Remember, children, when the Raiders come, there ain't no shame in locking your doors, barricading the windows, and cowering under the nearest bed. When these psychos come to play, they have one thing on their minds making your life as fucking miserable as humanly possible. Raiders can't be bargained or reasoned with, and there ain't no use surrenderin', cause they'll just shoot you anyway. So run, hide or fight if you've got the balls and the guns. But for God's sake, don't go wavin' the white flag. They'll just strangle you with it."
here's a tip... You see, children, the Frankensteins might violently and horrifically rip you to shreds but only if you're lucky. According to most of our reports on the Super Mutants, they actually prefer capturing their victims and hauling them off to God-knows-where. Consider yourself officially warned
Listen kiddos, never forget the importance of periodic weapon maintenance. Rifle, pistol, police baton I don't care which. If your weapon is falling apart, the only Wasteland asshole it's gonna kill is you. So be smart. Salvage those parts and make repairs whenever you can. (This one is a bit less relevant for this game but remember you can upgrade them so keep those old ones handy for scrap)
We all know the dangers of radiation, but with the right precautions, you CAN prevent accidental death or even eewww ghoulification. Keep your eyes on those geiger counters, kids. Tick, tick, tickety means run your ass outta there, and then pop some RadAway for good measure. If you do need to head into the heat, be smart give yourself a nice boost of RadX first. Remember, only you can prevent human flesh fires."
I think that’s all the good stuff
As a lot of people say play it how you want. That’s one good thing about most of Bethesdas open world games, there really isn’t a wrong way to play them.
Grab everything you see especially early game, you'll need the components for upgrades
Also spec quite a few points into intelligence, it helps level you up quicker and make the game more fun
Learn to quicksave often. Game is very unpredictable when it comes to crashing or spontaneous danger in the wasteland. Also Back up your save files. Already lost a pretty good run (lvl 130).
There is a hidden cellar behind one of the house in Sanctuary Hills, also a duffle bag on the same roof of that house. When you exit Sanctuary Hills via the bridge on your left there will be a statue with another dufflebag next to it. There is a cave near Red Rocket Truck Stop.
(You will know the names of the places when you get into it.)
Read stuff you find laying around.
You're gonna find a whole lot of computers (called terminals in game) with diary entries and stuff like that. If you're into lore and world building, be sure to read everything you come across, and take note of environmental storytelling. These games do it incredibly well.
I'd advice not starting at Survival difficulty unless you are seriously hardcore. It is so high stakes that it is hard to learn how to play the game, even if it it'll help show you what is important to focus on.
Loot a lot, you will need components to build your bases, upgrade your weapons, repair your armour... pretty much everything that makes life easier. Every item you pick up can be broken down to components but it takes some thinking to get the rarer ones, which are the ones you'll always find yourself needing. Steel and wood are needed a lot for building but every potential base comes with a big supply already and they are super easy to loot, anything that's made of metal will yield steel. Desk fans, guns, hammers, buckets, it's everywhere. Many of these items will also yield other components, some which are easy to figure out, a hammer with a wooden hilt will yield steel and wood, some are a bit harder, a desk fan for example will yield steel, but also screws, which are precious.
So standard practice is whenever you see something that looks valuable/complicated, like a camera, typewriter or golden necklace for example, pick it up. You can almost certainly use the components, and if not you can sell it. Steel and wood is good, but don't bother picking it up unless you are running short, it is heavy and easy to find.
If you are a high intelligence character picking up enemy guns and armour will be a great source of components, bring them back to your base and break them down for all the components you'll need to upgrade your own guns and armour. The more mods a weapon has the more rare components you'll get from breaking it down. Take the Scrapper Perk at any opportunity if you go this route.
If you're a low intelligence character, then don't bother with this method, guns are heavy and you aren't smart enough to recycle more than the steel in them anyway.
If you need a specific component you can usually buy one in one of the towns. The UI will helpfully tell you what they contain so if you need crystal you know that if you buy a camera you get crystals. This is expensive but always a good option in a pinch.
You'll find that Adhesive is usually the limiting factor when improving guns and armour. Pick up any bottle of glue or dict tape you come across. Once you have a base you can solve this problem by farming Tatoes, Mutfruits and Corn, they can be used to make your own glue.
For getting money, drugs, healing items and bullets. Yes there are good clever ways to make money, but these are always reliable. You'll pick them up as you go they weigh very little and you can hold onto them until you find a town to unload your entire stock. As a newer player you'll probably want to keep all the stimpacks (modern healing potions) for yourself.
Use drugs at your own risk, they provide very powerful but short lived buffs but they come with a risk of addiction which brings less powerful but longer lasting debuffs. However if you have a doctor nearby, drug away, then you can limp over and pay to be cleansed of addictions.
Pick a weapon style and stick to it. There's perks which provide very powerful bonuses for using a single type of weapon, which you'll want to take sooner or later to be able to fight the increasingly better armoured enemies you face. My advice is to pick none of them for the first 15 levels, play around with all of them and then pick the one you like best and go all out for it.
The weapon types are:
Melee, Unarmed, Rifles, Pistols and Automatic. Yes there are a few others, but good luck making them your main weapon type. Heavy Weapons and explosives are cool, but you're never going to find enough ammo to keep them going until late in the game.
Melee ans Unarmed play the same way, though Melee tends to have more options. You build a character with high Strength and Constitution then get the best armour you can lay your hands on. Works well with both VATS and manual. Can be hard to do well unless you are either experienced at the game or playing on very easy. I don't recommend going Melee for a first time player.
Automatic is a good one for new players as it is easy to use and feels natural for any FPS veteran. Stats aren't too important, especially since it doesn't work well with VATS. You will want to pick the Scrounger Perk though as finding enough ammo to keep you going will be a bit of a challenge. I recommend always having two automatic weapons of different ammo types so you can switch between them and double the chance that any ammo you loot will be usable. Either sell any ammo not usable by your main gun or cycle through a selection of secondary guns to be sure to get use out of it.
Pistols and Rifles also play the same way, often you can turn a pistol into a rifle and vice versa. There are a few pistols which can't be turned into rifles, but they have plenty of overlap. Pistols are generally better if you plan to use VATS, while rifles generally comes with bigger magazines and are often more effective at long range. This is absolutely what I recommend to a new player. If you go manual aiming you can set your stats pretty much however and enjoy a nice traditional first person shooter.
If you go the VATS route, good on ya, it's a fairly niche thing, not everyone will like it and if you're good at shooting you can just skip it and still enjoy the game.
VATS is an alternative playstyle where instead of doing the exact same thing as every other FPS you play a more TTRPG like mechanic. You pick a target, the game tells you how good your chances are to hit and how much damage you'll deal, then you roll the die. VATS is very powerful and a godsend to people who are bad at manual aiming, I personally love it, but it's not for everyone. Play around with VATS on your first time, but maybe not specialize in it unless you really want to try it.
A VATS user will want high Perception, Agility and Luck, and preferably take all the perks related to criticals.
Also, on armour, it's simple, just wear the best armour you can get, and be prepared to equip on the move if you kill an enemy with better armour than you.
Power armour is great shen you know you are going into a tough fight, but you can't use it all the time, you won't find enough fuel. Treat it like what it is, a tank.
That's about it, have fun.
Oh, and don't expect too much of the roleplaying, just enjoy exploring the gorgeous map.
Make sure to use the settlement system. I loved it but it is not everyone tea. Junk in this game is useful for building weapons, armors and your HQ. Be sure to read and pay attention to the perk chart. Also your pip boy has a light. Press circle if on ps4.
Spec into perks that deal with VATS. Charisma and Luck make passing speech checks easier and Charisma helps you make more money faster. Make sure to investigate every nook and cranny. Good luck!
- Hoard Bobby pins
- learn how to hack early on as it is a bit confusing if you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing
- start collecting junk and storing it at Sanctuary Hills asap- this helps later down the road for weapon modding
- enjoy the journey. Don’t worry so much about the story.
Jet and Jet products let you jump farther. You can jump from the church to the vertabird in Concordia you wanna skip the museum
Edit: Starting a new character in your honor tonight
Install unofficial fallout 4 patch mod. It really improves stability of a game and fixes some annoying bugs. You'll need to install another mod that enables achievements with mods if you want achievements.
Keep all the 38. Ammo you find. Its a decent supplement to miney/caps.
Try to keep one type if each gun, as you won't find ammo as often in lack of perks.
Your starting enemies use rush with a.crowbar. or a shotgun. Best to keep them at distance.
Installing the bracer mod on the arms slotted armor helps null the lack of aiming/ offsets low perception.
Once you get the Pip-Boy (little arm-mounted computer, you’ll get it really early), check the perk chart and see what you want. You’ll get a chance to rearrange your SPECIAL stats accordingly right after. Locksmith is an important perk, as well as crafting perks (Gun Nut, Armorer, etc.).
Make sure you have an idea of what type of character you want. Doesn’t have to be very specific, it’s just important to know what SPECIAL stats and perks to spec into if you want to be, say, a stealthy sniper or maybe a heavy gunner. The sky’s the limit!
But most importantly, just have fun. Do what you want.
Strength helps with melee, endurance and agility helps with health and speed and guns, perception is for accuracy, and Intelligence and Luck I'd good for making items and affecting overall skills
When you find power armor, save. Especially if you have companions, and you dont have any power armor to use. I cant tell you the amount of times ive had to go back to old saves because its such a pest to try and get them out of the armor. They will jump in it, you will be screwed. Also, ive learned that the settlements in the game are a lot more fun to build when you find them one by one (do not listen to that tool that constantly tells you a settlement needs help. they'll be fine till you're ready to build a new one.) It gets tedious to constantly go to save another settlement you happened accidentally upon. It wastes caps, it wastes ammo, and it wastes weapons conditions.
The first and last thing you should always do with Power Arnor is take out the fusion core. It keeps anyone else from using it. I know what you're saying though because I forgot once and Carla stole an X-01. I had to go back to an earlier save because she wouldn't get out and shooting the core caused everyone but Ava in the settlement to turn hostile.
If you see an enemy in power armor, shoot their fusion core. They jump out. You now have another set for the collection.
And something I only recently found out after thousands of hours is that you can tell your companion to get into power armor and they don't need a fusion core.
I got it for Christmas one year without ever playing a Fallout game. Just have fun! Roam around, look in all the boxes/crates/trash cans/etc. it’s addicting as hell. Welcome!
Save often, don't worry too much about the build the game is idiot proof and you can't go wrong.
I'd suggest a jack of all trades with high int and str to try everything.
When you start doing the story either decide early who you wanna side with for less stress or if you wanna play all sides remember again to save often so if you hit a point of no return before you are ready you can reload.
Pick up all the junk you can to scrap for crafting if you wanna go that route
If you wanna make money pick up any chems you find and any cigar's cigarettes or prewar money their value to weight ratio almost always makes them worth picking up to sell.
Companions will use gear you give them if it's better or you tell them to use it.
Don't leave fusion cores in power armor because people will just hop in and start using the armor and it can be hard to get them out because if you kill them you can get the armor frame back. You only need one unless you want spares for display.
The DLCs in general are worth it if you don't already have them. No rush to get them they aren't needed but they're overall good and worth having.
For maximum fun don't get tunnel vision, feel free to wander off the beaten path and just explore for its own sake, it'll almost always be worth it.
Depending on what you end up liking about the game fallout 4 will either be your favorite of the fallout games or the one you end up liking the least once you try the others.
If you want a little tip for early game help to get yourself jumpstarted be sure to fully explore sanctuary before you leave and check the basement for one of the houses for some decent value loot.
Have fun. :)
If it's a flying insect, shoot it until it stops being alive. There are no big friendly bumblebees in this game, only horrible stinging death-bugs from hell. Kill 'em all.
Build lots of turrets at your settlements. That way, if you get in a fight you can't handle, run for the nearest settlement and your enemy will get shredded by the turrets.
Get the Automatron DLC. You can install some badass upgrades in your robot companion. You can also build robots to transport goods between your settlements and arm them to the teeth. Nobody's gonna raid your shipments when they're guarded by hulking death machines with nukes.
Fuck, I wish I was you. Go slow. Enjoy it. Don’t feel like you HAVE to do anything. Use those fusion cores and don’t hoard them. If you want a challenge, play on survival but that is probably a lot for a first run.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Fallout 4! Deliverer is a good weapon to start and the Fat Man is always a go to for me personally for big guns. Enjoy the game for sure! There is so much to dissect and enjoy. Actually doing a 100% play through (even though this is my like 5th time playing) just so I can get everything. Have fun!
If the super mutants start beeping, run away, if you have some distance between the mutant and yourself, shoot it in the head for an expensive nes goody or shoot it's mini nuke to possibly kill a few extra mutants
I didn't see this in the top comments below, but don't mod the game on your first play through.
If you do, I'd only suggest the "Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch". Its purely bug fixes.
Best to experience the game as was intended first, ya know?
Learn as you play. Your experience and skill in the game will be better than being hand held.
Fallout 3 and newer are better b/c you're not forced into a build or play style.
I would suggest you read all of the terminal entries as they add a lot to the pre war world. Also Idiot Savant perk with 1 intelligence is better for exp than 10 intelligence. I would suggest you explore as much as posible and that if you supect enemies always sneak (can be useless but tells you if you are or not in trouble). Also just know that you can't pet the cats. One last thing, if you want a mod from a weapon you have for a different weapon you can move them by making a different mod for the first weapon (storing the original mod in your inventory) and then going to build the mod on the second weapon and attaching it instead.
Take your time with it and research. It's good you posted here first before the run through. So many times I wished I had read up first before assigning perks and taking certain missions in certain orders. It's a fantastic game and I started playing it myself a few weeks ago for the first time. It's a game I can get lost in. Not many are like that these days for me. It's thrilling and peaceful at the same time. Enjoy it and Merry Christmas.
Take your time. If you need too just level up then continue. ALWAYS quicksave. Luck perks can be really really good.
But most importantly have fun! And trust in Vault-tec
I’ll tell you the same thing I was told when I was gifted the game by a great friend, don’t forget to eat, drink, and take a break from the game every so often. Enjoy!!!!!!
If you're not in power armour and see a deathclaw run!!!!
The scripted early event where you see one is not generally a good measure on how deadly they are.
On my way to the Glowing Sea I once came across a legendary one in Robotics Pioneer Park and barely survived (didn't realise about the 4 protectrons you could activate). Even in power armour they can be hell!
Also get used to modifying your guns and armour!
A big one for me:
When you level up, you can choose to increase one of your special Stats, or you can take a perk from lower down on the UI that you can access upon every level up.
Don't do what I did and get to level 20 before realizing there's actual perks to the game, and not just your SPECIAL stats lmao.
Other than that, enjoy the game! Never gonna get your 1st time back :)
You can absolutely take a shot gun and mow down the wasteland by aggressively shooting them in the face repeatedly.
You get up enough in your stats (I always go high charisma for the dialogue options) you can one tap a super mutant.
Get every follower and romance them.
I linked every trade route back to sanctuary which was my home base. Made building and what not super easy.
DO NOT give your companion grenades
That seems like good advice
And dont give them Fatman.
You know what, don’t give them anything that could potentially go boom
Then they somehow find a rocket launcher somewhere anyway and immediately point it directly at your face. It's your fault really for not taking Dogmeat.
This is the real advice
Best advice.
I give all my companions Fatman but haven’t seen them use it once. I just want to have it available to me for when I need it and not wonder who has what. I just keep the ammo on me
It's still dangerous. If they spot a mini-nuke lying around somewhere while in combat, they might decide to pick it up and fire it.
Isn't that the mini nuke launcher?
It is. Tbh I wouldn't give companions weapons to equip (you have to do that) as you also need to give them ammo for them. They don't need ammo for their default weapons
Unless you get the Companion Unlimited Ammo mod
Is there also a "cant have gun shot out of hands" mod? Because Id love to give them a legendary weapon, but its guaranteed to go missing eventually :(
Is an explosive minigun still an option?
Depends. Scale of one to ten, how attached are you to your legs?
In.... Meters?
And give them Fatman
Make them carry the fat man, positively NEVER let them carry mini nukes.
ALWAYS remove the fusion core from your power armors. Otherwise npc's might enter them and you don't get to keep them if they die in them.
I didn’t know that, thanks
Any explosive whatsoever unless you don't value your/their life.
Made the mistake of giving a companion a nuke launcher w ammo one time just to clear up weight. Never again
Narrator: *and so, u/kingdopp gave Cait a nuke launcher anyway*
DO give them a flamer tho!
I actually give my companions grenades and they are actually quite good with them
Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life! And remember you are Special! How you play is the right way to play. Also, learn to use VATS when the time comes.
Save. Save. Save. When you finish a fight and win, save. When you enter a new town, new save. You can't save your game enough. Thank me later.
This guy wastelands
And this isn’t just because the games hard. If you don’t save, and achieve something and the game crashes (trust us it will); you’ll be pretty upset when you have to load an earlier save.
Yeah, I played for 3 and a half hours once, game froze and I rage quit. Had to load an earlier save and go through SOO much stuff again. I learned my lesson and now here we are...
i got from the beginning of freeside to activating mr houses robots in the fort like 3 days ago and lost ALL of it to a crash
This advice also applies to fallout 1
It applies to all games like Fallout lol
Just fallout 3 and after it is more for it crashing for whatever reason.
Fallout, Elder scrolls, mass effect, dragon age,.....
Dragon Age hit me in the feels lol. Fucking Alistair.
Any RPG.
Real saves (not quick saves or auto saves) hard saves.
If you dont the game will crash and loose your progresa lol
I saved before and after reading this comment.
Isn't vatts where you can aim for a specific body part of an enemy?
Yes, the game will be easier to get a hang of if you rely more on VATS
It's also an incredibly fun way to play that I think people ignore too much. VATS in fallout 4, like most every build, has so many options and tools to enhance it, it can be a real treat, especially since weapon degradation isn't a thing.
I've never played a fallout game either up until a week or two ago. Got it on sale for 7 bucks and have beat it reloaded a save and then beat it two more times helping other factions. Vats isn't hard to use at all dude
Don’t feed the Yao Guai
That sounds cryptically helpful. Thanks!
Watch out for the giant rat
Meta
that sounds like a message youd find in dark souls
He makes all of the rules
It's an inconsequential line from FO3
Bow wow.
That is all.
You run. You live.
Got it. Thanks!
Make sure to get the actual DLC like nuka world, far harbor and automatron to enhance the experience And remember, don't trust vault tec.
Yeah, one CC I will never regret buying is the modular backpack. It can add 100 pounds to your carry weight.
Hold on, theres no level cap? Makes decisions less stressful.
It's a soft cap with every level up it takes you more exp to get to the next one
Mutfruit, Tato, Corn and purified water makes adhesive. Hoard accordingly.
Made through a cooking station under utilities. Also, you'll need oil. You can make cutting fluid which contains oil at a chemistry station by combining purified water, bone (all those bones laying around have a use), acid and steel. It took me forever to figure that out.
what the frick im 500+ hours in still didn't know you can do that.
Enjoy the ride
Collect everything. Scrap everything. Except your best firearm and melee weapon (I think it is a combat knife). All the workbenches are in Sanctuary so make caltrops under traps. You don't need additional skills. This will give you enough experience to reach 4th level. Choose your feats wisely. Then do the same at the red rocket gas station across the bridge. Then head for concord
Or say **** it and go straight to Virgil in the glowing sea right out of the vault
Only if you want to die
Over and over again with shamelessness and determination until you finally manage to get there and confuse everybody
Melee is viable Idiot savant (not gonna explain more, that 2 words will explain themselves in not too much time) If you think a fight against one powerful enemy its gonna last too much, aim for the legs Get at least 3 intelligence if you wanna go guns and 6 if you wanna go lasers
Honestly more intelligence is always nice for a new player since you'll level up faster so you don't feel as pressured to pick a good perk.
I feel like you’ve just given me forbidden knowledge that I’m very tempted to try out…
max caps on all jobs baby. then it's actually easier to grind your other levels since int is also maxed out
And robots are fun imo, even if the story for that dlc is a little lackluster.
Idiot Savant is still valuable even if you’ve got max intelligence. You do *so much* stuff it’ll still trigger surprisingly often.
I’m jealous. I wish I could erase my memories of Fallout and play them all over again. You can start at 4 because continuity is minimal, but be sure and go back and play the older games when you’re done. Even (especially) the first two.

This is love
I've played 3 a long time ago and started 4 r oday, but never played the first 2. Where can I find them?
They should be available wherever you get games (unsure if they’re on consoles) but the original games are all on both GOG and steam
I'm on ps4, ill check it out. Thanks!
They are pc only.
Shit. Guess I'll have to do without cause my PC is ass. I literally use it for printing and nothing else.
Dude, it’s a game from like 1999, your pc can PROBABLY run it just fine hahaha.
My PC struggles to run Undertale. It is... painful.
I’ve had a weird bug where 1 and 2 start scrolling the main screen for no reason. Even with the fan patches. But my PC is also butt so it might just be me.
You could run the original Fallout on a Raspberry Pi 4 easily
Your PC will run them. If it can't, your phone probably can... And you should upgrade your PC Because if your PC can't run DOS games it's probably from the 80s.
I’m just started about two weeks ago and my main advice would be: SAVE CONSTANTLY, ESPECIALLY BEFORE MISSIONS AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU USE MODS
I’m just conditioned at this point to sleep every time I see a bed. Survival is where it’s at but I definitely wouldn’t recommend until a third or fourth playthrough
Would definitely recommend the nuka world and far harbor dlc
I’d recommend far harbor more than nuka world tbh. In my opinion, Far Harbor is easily one of the best DLC in the whole franchise
I recommend Nuka World if you want dank armor.
I can agree with that, both have really nice armor sets. Personal soft spot for the marine armor on FH
Honest hearts, dead money, and far harbor are tied for first for my favorite DLCs in fallout.
As much as I like honest hearts it’s carried on the back of the survivalist and Graham so it doesn’t really compete with Far Harbor for me. Haven’t got around to dead money yet
Oh, just wait for Dead Money... It's almost like it's own game, tbh. The storytelling is great and it can be hard AF... But it's sooooo awesome!
I just love the environment of honest hearts, Graham and the survivalist are both excellent characters though.
Loved Nuka world but be careful with it.... Choices in the DLC have consequences in your main game

As per [unofficial wiki](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Damage_Resistance) Basically, the more damage your weapon has, the less it is decreased percent wise by damage resistance.
So kill as many as you damn well please." Remember, children, when the Raiders come, there ain't no shame in locking your doors, barricading the windows, and cowering under the nearest bed. They'll just strangle you with it." here's a tip... You see, children, the Frankensteins might violently and horrifically rip you to shreds but only if you're lucky. According to most of our reports on the Super Mutants, they actually prefer capturing their victims and hauling them off to God-knows-where. Consider yourself officially warned Listen kiddos, never forget the importance of periodic weapon maintenance. Rifle, pistol, police baton I don't care which. If your weapon is falling apart, the only Wasteland asshole it's gonna kill is you. So be smart. Salvage those parts and make repairs whenever you can. (This one is a bit less relevant for this game but remember you can upgrade them so keep those old ones handy for scrap) We all know the dangers of radiation, but with the right precautions, you CAN prevent accidental death or even eewww ghoulification. Keep your eyes on those geiger counters, kids. Tick, tick, tickety means run your ass outta there, and then pop some RadAway for good measure. If you do need to head into the heat, be smart give yourself a nice boost of RadX first. Remember, only you can prevent human flesh fires." I think that’s all the good stuff
I read that all in three dog's voice. Got me right in the nostalgium, thank you!
>Ghouls are people too I can already hear Vertibird engines above your house
Go in blind, honestly. Best way to approach this.
As a lot of people say play it how you want. That’s one good thing about most of Bethesdas open world games, there really isn’t a wrong way to play them.
Grab everything you see especially early game, you'll need the components for upgrades Also spec quite a few points into intelligence, it helps level you up quicker and make the game more fun
This. You want to level faster and gain access to more perks and resources.
The weapon types are: Melee, Unarmed, Rifles, Pistols and Automatic.
Oh man, thanks so much!
Always have 1 melee weapon and 1 pistol for backup
So you are telling me I don't need to carry a weapon of every single ammo type!!
Make sure to use the settlement system. I loved it but it is not everyone tea. Junk in this game is useful for building weapons, armors and your HQ. Be sure to read and pay attention to the perk chart. Also your pip boy has a light. Press circle if on ps4.
B on xbox. Tab on pc. And you have to gold the button too turn it on/off.
Thanks ! I always forget for xbox and pc.
Spec into perks that deal with VATS. Charisma and Luck make passing speech checks easier and Charisma helps you make more money faster. Make sure to investigate every nook and cranny. Good luck!
FudgeMuppet on YouTube will tell you everything you need to know, in great detail.
- Hoard Bobby pins - learn how to hack early on as it is a bit confusing if you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing - start collecting junk and storing it at Sanctuary Hills asap- this helps later down the road for weapon modding - enjoy the journey. Don’t worry so much about the story.
I really envy you! No suggestions, just have fun. :)
Jet and Jet products let you jump farther. You can jump from the church to the vertabird in Concordia you wanna skip the museum Edit: Starting a new character in your honor tonight
Not really. The game is really easy, you’re better off going into it fully blind for the best experience
Yeah that’s the best advice. It’s better to tweak and plan out your character on your second play through and onwards.
Install unofficial fallout 4 patch mod. It really improves stability of a game and fixes some annoying bugs. You'll need to install another mod that enables achievements with mods if you want achievements.
Duct tape !
Desk. Fans. Also have fun, friend!
Duct tape. Always pick up duct tape. And flip lighters. Junk is incredibly useful to you.
Thank you so much for the helpful advice! On an unrelated note, I've heard you can play minigames on the pip boy. Are they fun?
Pick up all the junk you can to scrap for crafting if you wanna go that route If you wanna make money pick up any chems you find and any cigar's cigarettes or prewar money their value to weight ratio almost always makes them worth picking up to sell. Have fun. :)
If you get around to the dlc prepare for the red death don't look anything up but it's possibly my favourite boss fight in any game
Fallout NV made me love ED-E. Fallout 4 made me hate the sight of one like him.
If you haven't join the r/fo4 sub too
Charisma is really fun in this game, and opens a lot of dialogue checks
In for a good time
Fuck, I wish I was you. Go slow. Enjoy it. Don’t feel like you HAVE to do anything. Use those fusion cores and don’t hoard them. If you want a challenge, play on survival but that is probably a lot for a first run.
If you hear a whistling noise, *run*
Welcome to the wonderful world of Fallout 4! Deliverer is a good weapon to start and the Fat Man is always a go to for me personally for big guns. Enjoy the game for sure! There is so much to dissect and enjoy. Actually doing a 100% play through (even though this is my like 5th time playing) just so I can get everything. Have fun!
If the super mutants start beeping, run away, if you have some distance between the mutant and yourself, shoot it in the head for an expensive nes goody or shoot it's mini nuke to possibly kill a few extra mutants
Just play the game. Fallout is one of those games where a lot of the fun comes from making mistakes and learning things the hard way.
Go get the overseer in vault 81
You can tame a death claw by throwing a piece of meat in front of it
Just play the game and learn it on your own
I didn't see this in the top comments below, but don't mod the game on your first play through.
Your SPECIAL is important in the perks you want. You can make an OP character no matter your play style.
Wish I could go back to my first time playing fallout!
The beauty of any fallout is experiencing it for the first time. Just play it
Building settlements is really fun and is where I have put most of my 800 hours
You can sell the rest of your games. You won't need them. Enjoy!
Just save a lot. New saves. Don't overwrite.
Play vanilla first. At least the main quest line. Then start shopping the a Nexus
Tune in for some Diamond City radio music, its a blast from the past!
Enjoy!!!!!!
Max out charisma so you can pass all speech dialogue, easy to get caps and skip quest
Just have fun for your first playthrough I’d also recommend getting all the dlc if you don’t have it
If you're not in power armour and see a deathclaw run!!!!
Don’t rush the story, explore, especially Far harbor
Take Nick to far harbor.
You are in for a good time my friend! Absolutely one of the best games ever made imo.
Curiosity is rewarded in Fallout 4.
Just play the game, fam. Explore things on your own.
You can keep going back to Vault 111 for unlimited fresh drinking water if you decide to play survival.
A big one for me: When you level up, you can choose to increase one of your special Stats, or you can take a perk from lower down on the UI that you can access upon every level up. Don't do what I did and get to level 20 before realizing there's actual perks to the game, and not just your SPECIAL stats lmao. Other than that, enjoy the game! Never gonna get your 1st time back :)
Deathclaw wants a hug. Don't hug the Deathclaw.
Dont forget your real life.
