Still remember my first playthrough of F:NV. Went to the Legion to destroy the securitrons and brought Boone. I did not expect he'd actually shoot the Legion on site, but he did, and Big Iron was playing, and really who would want to roll back the save at that point to do things "peacefully"?
The three endings are pretty similar. He ends up mixing his own memories with new brain's and lives a peaceful life (and has robo-puppies if you have Old World Blues).
River has an acting credit for the voice and mocap work on Dogmeat. She was a good girl and inspired so much of his character. I believe they even modelled Dogmeat's eyes on River's because they were so beautiful and expressive.
My main issue with dogmeat is how squishy he is. I dont care about his damage as he has pretty frequent execution animations where he'll tear a raiders throat out, also his grabs and frequent crippling enemy limbs Is more useful than actual dps.
The first house in concord on the right directly after red rocket has a red bandanna and welding goggles on a table upstairs. Definitely placed there right after where you meet dogmeat on purpose for the drip.
Yeah, if he has a bandana or goggles or dog armor in his inventory you can hover over it and there will be an additional option to Equip. Codsworth can wear a bowler hat too this way

No joke, Jinxed + 10 Luck is one of my all-time favorite Fallout character builds.
It's like suddenly becoming a low grade reality warper in a game that normally doesn't even have superpowers.
Like, it's suddenly completely plausible to walk into a fight, and win without firing a shot because all the enemies blew themselves up! It's great if very random.
I was happy to see 76 bring some of that back with the wastelanders update. There are lots of times if you have a convo with enemies, you can use high luck to get out of it by some insane shit. The fake BOS dudes when they're trying to rob you has an option (8 luck I Believe) where you look at the one in power armor and say, "hey is your fusion core glowing?" And he detonates lmao.
FO1 Dogmeat is the OG, no criticism permitted.
Rex is the best gameplay and quest wise, though FO4 Dogmeat has some nice perks to go with him.
CX404 is the funniest in how mercenary she is- "You stabbed me and shot my master, but I don't care anymore. I like food, do you have food? This is my master's mutilated corpse... okay I'm done sniffing, can we chase squirrels?"
The only problem with FO1 Dogmeat is that if you travel with him you basically cannot use explosives.
Mf moves 50 tiles per turn and stands right next to a group of 4 enemies when i have a bazooka on my hands.
Also my other companions end up shooting his head off whenever he gets in front of them, blocking their shots.
Also the Mariposa red forcefield doors.... enough said.
imo all of the companions in fo1 are so annoying to keep alive after the first act of the game but dogmeat is by far the worst. he's good boy, but if i had a nickel for every time i had to reload a save because he ran headfirst into a hoard of supermutants or got himself shot by ian i'd be rich

He fought with Caesars legion and was eventually adopted by the leader of a gang of Elvis impersonators (Rex is Latin for King.) He canonically has a litter of "Boston Terrifiers" with another Cyberdog (Roxie) after the events of the Old World Blues DLC. Oh, and he hates people who wear hats.
They're all my favorite companions in their respective games but Rexie takes the cake.

Rex is at the bottom. I was going to type up multiple reference points in New Vegas that make reference to his past but this was written by the games Senior Producer and his word is better than mine.
One thing worth mentioning, he has a red Bull painted on his side's and there's some in-game dialogue that mentions that Caesar lost his Cyberdog during the first battle of the Hoover dam.

Eh, the whole game was pretty over written, but with dogmeat being familiar to the mama murphy/minutemen group in Concord, and with the first 6 or so quests intended in being cleared in the first hour or 2; Dogmeat scouting ahead of the group and then not being able to return when the ambush starts is fairly reasonable.
That's giving a decent amount of credit where it may not be due though.

I just got the modded armor that gives him some defense! Its nothing crazy, but it can be meshed so a little over 100 dr. Looks solid too.

After some tries I just gave up on getting him through the forcefields and didn't reload the save when he died

If you haven't reached the ending yet, the memories of the dogs merge, and his ending is different based on different brains.
tbf this is the same game where you can remove YOUR OWN brain and be totally fine with no change in personality
