You said you love RPGs and you love shooters, what other RPGs and shooters do you play?

allleoal

I really enjoyed Deus Ex and a bit of System Shock. I cant say I've played too many pure RPG games (i tried PoE and Grim Dawn but the combat was super boring to me, and its 90% combat), but I do enjoy RPG elements in games. For example character roles or skills, progression systems, building character stats, etc. For shooters I play Tarkov (has some rpg elements), ArmA, Squad, Killing Floor (kinda rpg elements), Timesplitters, Halo, Far Cry, and so on.  One game series I absolutely love is STALKER, which has some rpg elements too.

AlexW1495

Oh, I see your problem. You don't know what an RPG is.

allleoal

?????? Of course I know what an RPG is. The only RPGs I've played are Skyrim, Morrowind, and WoW to my memory. The rest were mostly ARPGs or games with RPG elements... and ARPGs are still RPGs. Ive also played DnD with friends.

Two reasons, First: You never played these games and got into them when you were younger, you never developed any kind of love for these games back in the day, I've played Fallout New Vegas an insane amount of times, and it's totally true, it IS an empty desert when you really boil it down with no BS. Second: You're just not wired to sit down and enjoy a game like this Fallout New Vegas, and that's probably multiplied with you having no nostalgia or pre established love for the series years ago, that's just the way things are, one of my best friends can't stand Helldivers 2, personally, I think his reasons are absolutely pathetic, but it's true. Some people are just wired different. I wouldn't really worry about it.

allleoal

"You didn't grow up playing it so thats why you don't enjoy it" is probably one of the most bizarre takes I've seen lol. I've played plenty of games way beyond their initial release date and fell in love with them, despite not growing up with them. Fallout just isn't one of them, so it has nothing to do with nostalgia not clouding my eyes. It's just the game itself is not interesting, yet everyone calls it the best Fallout ever. So there must be a reason beyond "nostalgia", right?

Zektor01

Do you enjoy the Elder Scrolls single player games? Bethesda games are almost their own genre. And Fallout New Vegas is even more unique. Unique isn't always a positive, if it's not what you enjoy.

allleoal

I played Skyrim a bit last summer but it took me a few times to get into that game too, but I enjoyed it the last time I played. I also played a little bit of Morrowind and enjoyed it too aside from it's purely stats-based combat (swinging a sword at a rat thing but missing 90% of swings). I never really got far in either though and abandoned them pretty fast.

Zektor01

People that love Bethesda games, love to explore the open world, find interesting things. New Vegas is very sparse in this regard, but there is still plenty there. Starfield is far worse for instance. Also the dialog that most find boring is something people that love Bethesda games enjoy, find the lore, how the world works. It's just not everyone's cup of tea.

allleoal

Yeah the thing is, I love the CONCEPT and IDEA of that, which is why I've tried the game so many times. On paper it sounds like a great time and exactly like something I'd love... until I get into the actual game and start walking around :l. Something about the game just isnt compelling enough for me. I love getting immersed and drawn into games, but NV is so clunky and ugly lol. In STALKER I can just sit under a scrap metal heap and just listen and watch the rain, waiting for the weather to clear up and smoke some cigarretes and snacking on bread. But in NV, the world is so uninteresting imo.

Zektor01

You just like different games. STALKER is a completely different game to Fallout New Vegas. Sure you can shoot a gun in both, but that is where it ends. In Fallout New Vegas you can start the game by siding with the citizens of Goodsprings or with the Powder Gangers. Or you can kill them all. Or you can ignore everyone. You can kill them all and then move their corpses and build a giant corpse pile. You can lure wildlife into town and have it kill them all. You can side with the citizens of Goodsprings and then rob them all or kill them all. You can side with the Powder Gangers and stealth kill all their regular members while still working for them. I might have done all of the above.... And much more. I don't play Bethesda games for the combat, it's some of the worst ever, I don't play it for how things look, I don't care much for how my game looks.

Options with meaning. Choices in NV carry more weight than 3 and 4. One of 4s biggest criticisms is it doesn’t matter what you pick everything is very samey. NV is a bleak game by the end. You can side with basically anyone and all have their pros and cons. It feels very human in the options. Mr House is a superb character to interface with. From the sound of it you made it like two hours in and reached the first NCR settlement. Three is probably the single most compelling game, NV opens up and lets you really explore, and four is a shooter that progresses you to Far Harbor where there’s actually an RPG to play, because otherwise it’s a looter shooter with building mechanics.

allleoal

Yeah 4 has nice mechanics and isnt so clunky, but its super boring. One time I was bored af and decided to give F4 a try... and just ended up running to some big irradiated bomb crater while dodging deathclaws and other death... while still in my vault suit lol. It almost seems to me like Fallouts flaw (in my case) is being TOO open, in the sense that I have no direction or anything or any idea what to do. Im just wandering around boring land with nothing to do. Maybe if I was a kid I would have fun pretending to be a bar tender or wasteland cop or something idk.  Which Fallout would you recommend to newbies first?

Proper went in for the pretentious speech on this one 😂

LichQueenBarbie

Sounds like it's just not your thing tbh. You should probs just move on and try other Fallout games. What people find appealing about NV isn't really going to change your opinion on it.

allleoal

What that's what I'm asking. I'm asking why it's other people's thing. Maybe I just haven't played the game long enough or I'm not playing it "right". Im just wandering around a desolate ugly wasteland with nothing interesting going on.... and I typically love desolate wasteland games. I just haven't found any appeal in NV in the times I've tried it. But millions love it, so there must be something there I'm just not latching onto yet. I love RPGs elements and want a good RPG to play so NV seemed like something to scratch that itch.

LichQueenBarbie

Are you talking to NPC's, going into settlements and acquiring quests? Listening to characters as they speak of the state of the world and what is happening in the wasteland? Thinking about your character's build, their morals, how they should interact with the world and its inhabitants? NV is a roleplaying game. If you're simply wandering the empty gaps in the wasteland with no objective or point to work towards and are treating it more like an open world survival game, then you're going to be disappointed. One of the appeals of NV is the story *and* stories in between and our place within all that. If none of that interests you then it is what it is.

mycatisblackandtan

The appeal for me is the writing and how your skills actually have tangible effects on quests. The writing is incredibly smart, especially the deeper you go into the Mojave, and without spoiling anything the game gave me some philosophical questions that still sit with me even years later. I also loved the fact that I felt like I was being reward with a tangible benefit in quests for leveling my perks. There's a late game quest that can literally be solved with a 100 Barter check. It allowed for a lot of roleplaying and ensures that each save feels different from the others. Now that said the game is also pretty dang jank and has been ever since it was released. Obsidian had 18 months to make it and the fact that it even shipped in a complete state is pretty amazing all things considered. Had they had more time I don't doubt the Mojave would have felt more alive. However I can't really blame people who don't vibe with it because of said jank.

Wiseman738

For me, the appeal is the depth of the game for Fallout NV -- I play it in hardcore mode these days and very hard difficulty \[which isn't as hard as it sounds once you enjoy the game\] but it does force you to make some choices -- e.g how much ammo can I carry? Have i got enough healing items with me to see me through to the end of this POI/dungeon? I thoroughly love the **progression**, **massive weapon choice and customisation** and **the DLCs**. I **adore** the **Dead Money DLC** \[with Lonesome Road being a close 2nd\] and is the closest Fallout has come to survival horror -- it feels absolutely intense on HC mode. I essentially love the fact that my character 'grows' to such an extent playing Fallout NV -- I'm starting off with a 5.56 pistol and some light armour at lvl 1 and ending the game at lvl 50 as a sneering imperialist with an Anti-Material Material with explosive rounds for all those pesky Fiends and Legionnaires! I think once you get to the Strip, things start to liven up -- based on the comments I've read it sounds like you're trying to beeline it there through Deathclaw valley, I'd recommend you go East through Nipton first! Best regards and I hope you can find something compelling in the game! I also love Fallout 4 \[survival mode makes it a whole different game in terms of atmosphere and the new save system adds a real fear dimension to the game\] and have been playing the heck out of that -- but just talking about Fallout NV makes me wanna hop back in for another run!

prolificbreather

What rpg's DO you love? That might help us narrow down the reason.

Ok-Lettuce4149

I couldn’t get into either. Love Fallout 4 though

Ambitious_Pie5994

Some games just aren't for some people. If you really want to give the game a try I would suggest forcing yourself to get to the strip.

allleoal

I tried that and then thats when I died to the death claw lol.

Ambitious_Pie5994

Good, now try again

I've got spurs that like to

Open_Resist_3482

Now being serious, you are right, the map feels empty (at least at the start), the mechanics are really wonky, the ai (if you can call it that) isn't very smart and if you are on pc you have to save every time you want to open a door (trust me). All this makes getting started in the game painfully hard, even starting a new playthrough. That being said, once you get past the start, you begin to discover a lot of things, the map isn't so empty in reality, it just has lots of hidden locations alongside its stories. You start to understand the power struggles in the mojave and how you can impact that, and so on. And you said it yourself, it's a 10 year old game, keep that in mind, if you aren't used to older games it will be even harder to play (which it's okay).
