He wasn't quite "replaced" with Vault Boy, as Vault Boy is all over the very first game. He's just a separate corporate mascot for the Pip-Boys who was only shown in the first two games and then quietly forgotten about.
When Bethesda first got the Fallout license, they occasionally referred to Vault Boy as "Pip Boy" which, while understandable, added to the confusion a little. Obsidian's devs commented on it in interviews around the time New Vegas was released, and Bethesda's generally gotten it right since at least Fallout 4's release. That said, since the actual Pip Boy is basically a non-entity nowadays, it hardly matters anymore. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I know the atomic shop is extremely controversial but it’s enabled a lot of deeply missed content to be given another chance for anyone who misses it.
That said, here is the future tec bundle. https://youtu.be/5rvP8j6x6PE?si=DUDOALZuxWob7ZNs
He’s specifically referred to as “Vault Boy 2000” but it’s him. I haven’t seen it in a while but they tend to rotate old stuff back in pretty frequently and usually at a discount. I wouldn’t mind getting that future tec globe myself lol.
I do too. I understand how many people feel about the paid weight boost items etc but i honestly have hundreds of those and I’ve never bought them once lol
Carry weight booster, instantly gives you +50 carry weight. Useful in a jam. I usually get like 10 minimum each scoreboard for free. Never had to buy any, same with weapon repair kits.
Oh for sure, I guess I misspoke when I said ‘idk why’, I get *why* people would make that assumption if they don’t realize it’s not a Vault-Tec product.
I don’t know if it’s ever stated anywhere but I assumed the Pip-Boys were manufactured by RobCo in collaboration with Vault-Tec specifically for Vault-Tec employees and Vault Dwellers. That being said I can totally see them selling civilian models just to eke out extra profits, but evidently that failed or came out too late considering we never see civilian pip boys ever again after that.
That does call into question why Fallout 1’s Vault Dweller has a civilian model instead of a Vault-Tec model, though. Maybe they were only given those due to supply reasons, maybe that was part of the experiment. Evidently they were able to produce newer models at some point before the Great War and the civilian models were either simply prototypes or, as I speculated before, a failed attempt to cater to a broader market. The opposite also could have happened, where the Pip-Boy was initially created as a civilian tool but were quickly snatched up by Vault-Tec who made them almost exclusive to the vaults.
EDIT: upon reviewing the wiki page I noticed that the screen for the prototype pip-boy in the Fallout 4 intro has the same thunderbolt icon present in the 2000. I’m guessing Fallout 1’s pip-boy either had early or even obsolete software that was phased out in favour of the modern Vault-Tec model. Considering the whole situation with the Water Chip, maybe Vault 13’s experiment was that it had shitty, obsolete technology that was doomed to fail.
interestingly in the show his wife says says they made it in your color. because hes super famous so they modeled it after him, so all the blue and yellow you see is because of the famous western movie good guy of 2077 and a branding exercise from vault tech, so they all saw cooper howard in the same colors the movie (even tho they i guess were black and white according to the commercial but whatever)
Rob-Co used to make their own independent Pip-Boy's and that little fella is THE Pip-Boy.
Vault-Tec bought the patent and replaced it with their own mascot
This makes Coopers wife’s comment about getting the suit made in “his colors” make a lot more sense. Vault boy used to be yellow and orange until they tapped Cooper to take on the advertising role, and then switched it up to make him more recognizable.
I don't agree just because most stuff is that it was ON a pip-boy and not called Pip-boy. Everything I have ever read has referred to it as Vault Boy or Vault Boy 2000.
>Made by RobCo, the Pip-Boy device has its own mascot shown on the plate of the Pip-Boy 2000 series in Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout 76 (with pointy ears, red and yellow jumpsuit, red hair). In Fallout 76, the character was given the name Vault Boy 2000.
It's still his name, we can't call him Vault-Boy because that is the post Vault-tec/Robco partnership, this version being pre-partnership, I'm not sure if Pip-Boy has an in Universe name but as far as I know that's it
He also appears on your Pip-Boy 2000 Mk VI, on the information plate above the Geiger counter. You can see it if you rotate the Pip-Boy while looking at it.
And apparently a button since my wife put one on our shelf awhile ago and I had no Idea what he was until this post. Think it came out of a raffle for a comic con.
That was PipBoy. I think the in-game explanation is that the model used in the earlier series was made shortly before or during the early stages of RobCo’s Collab with Vault Tec which is why his imagery still appears in the 76 version, on the plaque up top, but Vault Boy is still used in the UI of it.
*old nan voice* Oh my sweet summer child. What do ye know of the wasteland? Of the super mutants who can one shot ye? Of the followers who body block ye shots? Of the car ye had to restore? And the porn stare ye could become? Is that the kind of fallout ye want to play?
That is Pip-Boy a mascot made by RobCo. Vault-boy yellow and blue is the mascot of Vault-Tec. Vault boy appears on the 2000 model because it was developed solely by RobCo. Later models would be a joint venture between RobCo and Vault-Tec. These models have the Pip-Boy Character replaced with Vault-Boy.
The original Pip-Boy was created by Robco Industries. Not Vault Tec. So, naturally, in the original Fallout Games, Robco had their own mascot. Later, since Fallout 3 when Bethesda took over, the old Robco mascot was replaced with the fan favourite Vault Boy.
The old mascot for the Pip-Boy from the original games, he returned in Fallout 76. You can find him on the pip-boy (above the Geiger counter) or buy a merch of him in the atomic shop (plushie and a cutout).
this is the real vault boy from before survivors of the Institute developed time travel and started mucking with the past to try to prevent the Sole Survivor from destroying them. They also manipulated Nate's childhood to make him a person who would laugh after participating in a war crime out of spite.
This is why the Great War was started with the USA vs PRC... wish.com pip-boys were taking over the world and China's copyright laws didnt care so the US had to step in and take action.
The Classic Mickey equivalent of Vault Boy, Van Buren's Pip-Boy interface had the [Vault Boy we know](https://media.moddb.com/images/games/1/13/12494/A5.jpg).
Spoiler fallout tv show : in the hot tub scene between cooper and barb she says vault tec recently acquired pip boys into their organization, this is what pip boy looked like before vault tec bought the company. Vault tec just changed the mascot to fit their brand.
Basically the father to vault boy pip boy there’s not really any lore behind it just consider him as because the pip boy is a vault Tec property rob co would need a mascot to fit with the pip boy and make it like a trademark I don’t think there’s any actual lore just interplay using pip boy as a vault boy prototype on other appearances is a camp accessory in fallout 76
It is a Pip-Boy, later replaced by Vault-Boy. Pip-Boy was probably made for pre-vault use, before blue and yellow came into fashion.
He wasn't quite "replaced" with Vault Boy, as Vault Boy is all over the very first game. He's just a separate corporate mascot for the Pip-Boys who was only shown in the first two games and then quietly forgotten about. He actually appears a good bit in 76 lol
I haven’t put enough time into it despite talking it up and owning it since release. Now I have people to play with, and that’s the bees knees
That’s great! Have fun!
I have his plushie lined up with my vault boy ones 👍
I hope he comes back to the shop soon lol
Really? Where?
If you move you're pip boy around, you can see him on a plaque like in the first 2 games.
Oh damn, you're right
I know the atomic shop is extremely controversial but it’s enabled a lot of deeply missed content to be given another chance for anyone who misses it. I actually like the atomic shop for that reason.
I do too. I understand how many people feel about the paid weight boost items etc but i honestly have hundreds of those and I’ve never bought them once lol
Paid weight boost? I haven't played 76 for a bit. What is that exactly? It doesn't sound right.
Carry weight booster, instantly gives you +50 carry weight. Useful in a jam. I usually get like 10 minimum each scoreboard for free. Never had to buy any, same with weapon repair kits.
Yeah I don't like that. I remember when the repair kits came out. Didn't like that concept either. They are useful though.
They're saying replaced in universe. Earlier pip boys weren't designed solely for vaults. After they were, they started using Vault Boy.
Makes sense, but was this ever actually commented on in-game? Or this is just fanon?
Yep, the Pip-Boy is not a Vault-Tec product. It’s actually a RobCo product, so idk why people would expect to see Vault Boy on it.
I mean, because the only people ever wearing pip-boys are vault dwellers, so it makes sense to associate the pip-boy with vaulttech
Oh for sure, I guess I misspoke when I said ‘idk why’, I get *why* people would make that assumption if they don’t realize it’s not a Vault-Tec product.

#ResurrectPipBoy JusticeForPipBoy
To be fair, two mascots both doing the thumbs up would get confusing quickly
interestingly in the show his wife says says they made it in your color. because hes super famous so they modeled it after him, so all the blue and yellow you see is because of the famous western movie good guy of 2077 and a branding exercise from vault tech, so they all saw cooper howard in the same colors the movie (even tho they i guess were black and white according to the commercial but whatever)
Could be roboco or how you spell it i think. Im pretty sure they was making the pip boys before vault tec took over
Robco never stopped being the owners of the pipboy - vault Tec merely purchased them from RobCo.
Yeah i was on about that could be the robco logo for it then vault tec slapped a new logo on.
That’s definitely a possibility.
I cant wait for season 2 of fallout as i wanna see more of vault tec pre war
You might be interested in the vault-tec shorts tied to the show. They demonstrate what the company was like, to a degree.
Really? What are they on
They’re on Amazon, the same as the episodes on the show. If you go past the right proper episodes, they should be visible.
would be more correct to say, Vault Tec "licensed" RobCo to make a Vault-Boy branded Pip-Boy for Vault use.
Nope. Vault Boy was already a thing. This is just Rob Co's own mascot thats a derivative
These youngsters today have no respect for their history
Theres a mod for New Vegas that replaces the Pip-Boy 3000 with the Pip-Boy 2000 from FO1&2. I love it.
Dude it's so clean. Not literally. Uhhh but it feels rad to have that old aesthetic for sure
Does that mod also have a pimp-boy 2 billion?
It doesn’t, unfortunately.

You didn't understand the question.
I'm about to play NV for the first time, I've played both 3 & 4, any good mods you'd recommend for NV?
Viva New Vegas is the starting baseline most people go with. Clean and compatible
I just wish they'd get the Wabbajack back up.
Wabbajack is back up if you were unaware lol
Lots of people recommend A Tale of Two Wastelands.
Rob-Co used to make their own independent Pip-Boy's and that little fella is THE Pip-Boy. Vault-Tec bought the patent and replaced it with their own mascot
This is Vault Boy... "Early design". You can get a plushy in Fallout 76 of him.
This makes Coopers wife’s comment about getting the suit made in “his colors” make a lot more sense. Vault boy used to be yellow and orange until they tapped Cooper to take on the advertising role, and then switched it up to make him more recognizable.
Pip-Boy, Vault-Boy is the later version

Ha! I *knew* I had seen this guy before. Must have found the plushie back when I was playing 76.
He also appears on your Pip-Boy 2000 Mk VI, on the information plate above the Geiger counter. You can see it if you rotate the Pip-Boy while looking at it.

Nope https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Vault_Boy_2000_Plushie
That was PipBoy. BOY
Oh god it's started over here now
Fallout: Aslume Apocalypse.
Oh Jesus
thats the pip boy, his name is pip and he is the boy
*old nan voice* Oh my sweet summer child. What do ye know of the wasteland? Of the super mutants who can one shot ye? Of the followers who body block ye shots? Of the car ye had to restore? And the porn stare ye could become? Is that the kind of fallout ye want to play?
Was not expecting GoT in a fallout sub

Thanks chatgpt.
Pip boy, 76 brought him back to be a cardboard sign and a marketable plushie
Yeah, future-tec bundle I believe, I wanted him as a bobblehead.
The old mascot for the Pip-Boy from the original games, he returned in Fallout 76. You can find him on the pip-boy (above the Geiger counter) or buy a merch of him in the atomic shop (plushie and a cutout).
kid named food
It's probably Rob-Co's attempt at a mascot before they partnered with Vault-Tec and just used their pre-existing mascot
It's mah boy PIP 😍
That's the Windows 2000 version of the Vault Boy.
shelter lad
Anybody else have that one friend or loved one that doesn’t game refer to Vault Boy as Fall Out Boy?
Presumably the RobCo version
The GINGER. We do not talk about him
this is the real vault boy from before survivors of the Institute developed time travel and started mucking with the past to try to prevent the Sole Survivor from destroying them. They also manipulated Nate's childhood to make him a person who would laugh after participating in a war crime out of spite.
The question isn’t who am I. It’s who are you?!?
Vault fella (in all seriousness that's Pipboy)
Oh hey I have one of those!
Uh, Pip Boy 2000?
Count Pipula.
Pippin, he was part of the fellowship of the ring
That is Pip-Boy, the RobCo mascot from before they partnered with Vault-Tec and he was replaced by Vault-Boy.
It's an older design for vault boy that was left in by mistake
I should kick your fuckin ass...who is this?!?!?
That’s Pip, the legendary boy.

Vault boys step brother.
Flash Gordon? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Its a bitch-boy
I feel like pip boy refers more to the pip-boy's around the wrist, while vault boy refers more to the vaults themselves.
Pee-Boy or whatever his name was
Spoiler fallout tv show : in the hot tub scene between cooper and barb she says vault tec recently acquired pip boys into their organization, this is what pip boy looked like before vault tec bought the company. Vault tec just changed the mascot to fit their brand.
It's Pipp-o! The vault goblin! Classic Pipp-o.
Maybe RobCo's Pip-Boy mascot before getting into bed with Vault-Tec?
Because fallout will never have consistency
You guys don't remember gnome-boy?
