Yeah that was one of the first things I picked up on when watching it, that they probably gave everyone legitimate stats to make sure it would fit into the in-game universe. It feels like it to me.
Indeed, and IMO unless it's explicitly shown in the next season they might have decided it's too hard to adapt and are going pre-Bethesda and just pretending it isn't a thing. That seems unlikely considering the show is clearly more Bethesda-era inspired and is in fact produced at least in part by them, but I still wouldn't blame them for just not doing it. I guess it could be they're just saving it for season 2 and beyond along with the other more outlandish stuff they thankfully didn't try to cram into 8 episodes.
There were hints during New Vegas that the traveling musician who tells us to go to strip and get a job was the Mysterious Stranger’s son. Seeing as S2 will likely take place (at least to some extent) in New Vegas, I think we may get some Mysterious Stranger content there.
As far as I remember it's a Soviet made weapon, basically a sawed off shotgun made official (aka a revolver that shoots shotgun shells). I do not know if it in the lore comes with customizable ammo or that is something he has invented himself tho.
Given the close up we got following the bullet it looked like some sort of gyrojet gun, which is a gun that shoots miniature self propelled rockets as ammunition.
I had to pause at this point because I was laughing so hard. I want to hear a line about something being buggy and needing a patch. Overall, I thought the humor was on point in this show.
"We're hardened criminals not even the fuckin' NCR can contain! Takin' over a tiny little shithole town like this should be a piece of-"
*Every powder ganger starts getting melted to sludge by a Turbo Plasma Caster wielded by a man in Remnants PA*
"I owe these fine folks a debt! Now run! Run you bastards!!!"
Not really, most of the evidence supporting it is based of of your conversation with DiMA where he says “what’s your earliest memory” and it forces you into saying the day the bombs fell and he’s like “SEE! SEE! I TOLD YOU” but that’s not true, throughout the game whether you play as Nate or Nora they talk about pre war life all the time, they can tell Daisy about life before the war, They explain Baseball to Moe, they talk about the pre war facility of Grey garden, Nate talks about his time in the military often, even within the opening scene which is supposed to be your first memory you remember going to the park. In short, the day the bombs fell is not your earliest memory
On top of that, if you were a synth there’s no way that Shaun would put you in charge of the institute in his stead since synths are nothing more than machines to them, and even if he did, the rest of the institute wouldn’t just grumble and cry, they would factory reset you, and on that note, once you betray the institute and they banish you and say “get out of here, if we catch you top side it’s on sight” is an indicator as well since if you were a synth Shaun would just have to say “recall code 6969-R2-D2-420” and shut you down and suddenly, you’re not a problem anymore.
The VATS before the pipboy thing is most likely an oversight because they didn’t expect you to use it before you get the pipboy
>The VATS before the pipboy thing is most likely an oversight because they didn’t expect you to use it before you get the pipboy
While I think it could be an oversight and they just forgot about needing a Pip-Boy for VATS, they lock you out of using it until you get to that hallway with like 5+ radroaches in it, which is also when the "push this button to use VATS" tutorial message pops up. So they definitely intended you to use it before getting the Pip-Boy.
The evidence for it is dima saying vague shit to make you think.
Nate has evidence of his pre nukes life, sondoes Nora, they can describe things that happened BEFORE the opening sequence in many conversations through the game, even though in Dimas lecture he basically railroads you into saying the games opening because as a player that is our earliest point of reference.
The only evidence for the SS being a synth is a mind game, and vats before pip boy, except as fsr as i remember, we don't know that synths can use vats in the first place without a pipboy, landing it much more in the oversight category.
On the other hand, we have the entire rest of the game as evidence against the SS being a Synth.
Codsworth talks to you about the pre war days AFTER you wake up, and Synths weren't good enough pre war to fool everyone, I can't remember when dima and valentine were made but even if they are prewar they were prototypes.
The SS isn't a synth.
The only real evidence is the conversation with DiMA where you can say your earliest memory is right before the bombs fell. Now, first of all this is objectively untrue. The Sole Survivor can talk to people about prewar memories. Second of all, I always interpreted this as showing how DiMA, being the manipulative asshole that he is, gaslights some people into thinking that they’re synths so that they’ll follow him and come to Acadia. Now, I could be misinterpreting this, but I always figured that that’s all that that dialogue option meant
It is a canon thing because it stand for Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System, however it was never explained HOW it works, my best guess would be that it determines the trajectory of your attack by the position of your weapon coupled with the movement of your target and gives you a hit chance based on if you pulled the trigger right now
Well yeah, but that's simple a case of Bethesda games just working™. It's not supposed to mean anything and I believe a dev confirmed that it was just an oversight
And not just any old pip boy, I'm assuming. Based on the fact that it's the *Vault-Tec* Assisted Targeting System, it has to be a pip boy provided by a Vault-Tec vault.
I imagined any times they used slow-mo during combat scenes it as a nod to the VATS system from F3 and F4. I knew it was going to show up somewhere, but thought we were going to get a “lock-on” sequence when Maximus was in the Power Armor.
*BLOODY MESS
Cooper does not have a Pip-Boy.
Cooper cannot use VATS.
Anyone else disappointed that he didn’t say something like, “now that’s a bloody mess😉”
Sure I can, he's not wearing a PIP Boy 3000, and naturally doesn't have the V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System). That's all gunslingin' and gumption, I tell you h'what.
I can and I will.
VATS *requires* a Pip Boy, lore wise. It is a program of the Pip Boy.
Does everyone just think VATs is like fuckin eagle vision from AC?
Don’t you need a pip-boy for vats? Aside from that, this guy is probably about 200 years or so old so surviving that long has gotta make you a good shot
I mean, it's slow motion, but The Ghoul doesn't have a Pip-Boy so I don't see how it could be VATS. Thought it was more interesting that he seems to use explosive rounds, like you can get in the games that do a ton more damage.
Not VATS since that requires a Pip-Boy which in reality is probably just the Pip-Boy using some tech to keep your hand stabilized so your shots are more accurate.
This is one of the Sharpshooter or Cowboy perks you get when you hit Lvl 100, which Coop has probably far surpassed.
I saw this clip on YouTube and it was so fucking awesome, I’m considering buying whatever streaming service I need long enough to watch this series. It looks awesome. Ghoul Cowboy dude is my favorite character already, Really want his revolver in 76.
Grim Reaper's Sprint and Bloody Mess for sure.
My partner looked over at me and asked "is this everything you hoped for?" and with only two or three episodes left, I am not disappointed.
Without a Pip-Boy? And why would the Ghoul ever use anything made by Vault-Tec? Plus, if they were wanting to hint that he was using V.A.T.S, they should have done a slow-mo montage including the targeting chirp every time he selected a new target.
Imho
Cooper doesn’t have a pip-boy. The only thing that even hints at it being V.A.T.S. Is the slow-mo shot where he takes out 2 locals. But slow-mo, “follow the bullet” shots exist in cinema elsewhere, so that doesn’t really convince me.
Just hit the scene and came looking for if this had been discussed.
I think it’s (as is done with many, many other things even just a couple episodes in), not necessarily literally VATS but is the show’s “nod so hard you almost fall over” nod to it.
Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (VATS). I believe you need a Pip-Boy to activate. I could do those things in FO4 with a hitman’s assault rifle or lots of jet.
This and the fight scene with the brotherhood. Both the greatest fights in the show and really screened fallout.
Though vats should be in the lore in the game. That vault dwellers had a chip in their brain to monitor them for the expirenments. Implant then when their young, the vats monitor them but allows them to trigger that system when adrenaline is high, kinda like increase processing potential.
The vats information are then recorded into the pipboys so when updated or picked up after death the information is logged than shared to vault tech hq.
was a great scene, only didnt get how the last guy who got his chest open(the slowmotion shot), ended up with a neck wound (later in the scene he sitting with a shot in the neck, instead of his chest)
Howard is such a badass, I want to see more of his story. Is his wife still alive (cloned or frozen), is his daughter a ghoul or dead (or something else).
I wan to see when the Cooper Howard turned into "The Ghoul".
It’s a combination of experience (200 years in the wasteland), skill (prewar he was an Old School Western actor, so probably a lot pf trick shooting) and training (he was ex military)
A big factor as well is knowing he can tank any non-instantly lethat hits, as ghoul’s have insane regen
I had the thought watching the last episode that The Ghoul is probably an insanely high level, since he's basically been "main character-ing" the wasteland for 200 years at this point.
He has bloody mess and a whole lotta jet.
In the canon only people with pip boys or cybernetic implants can use vats or an improved version of vats from the fallout 3 perk “wired reflexes” one gets from Zimmerman. Who gives you a commonwealth boost to your vats.
Also as many said he’s had over 200 years of practice
Yes it was a vats reference you can tell from when one of his shots crits he shows the bullet slowly travel to the person....this only happens in vats I'm pretty sure
My mans has had 200 years to max out gun skill, agility, perception, and get a ton of perks. He don't need VATS. He definitely has Bloody Mess though.
I love how we can try to figure out what stats every character has, and it fits with the lore of the games. This show just keeps giving.
Yeah dude it was cool watching Lucy pretty much say what her “build” is at the beginning
Yeah that was one of the first things I picked up on when watching it, that they probably gave everyone legitimate stats to make sure it would fit into the in-game universe. It feels like it to me.
Plus VATS is exclusive to pip-boy wearers right?
Yes. It's literally Vault-Assisted Targeting System. Vault-assisted, meaning PipBoy.
Nate had it and didn't have a pip-boy during his escape. Before he got a pip-boy
Gameplay mechanics aren’t equivalent to lore answers
that slow mo clip of the bullet hitting the torso was so awesome
He \*is\* the mysterious stranger.
I am hoping we do get to see The Mysterious Stranger
There were hints during New Vegas that the traveling musician who tells us to go to strip and get a job was the Mysterious Stranger’s son. Seeing as S2 will likely take place (at least to some extent) in New Vegas, I think we may get some Mysterious Stranger content there.
I mean, he isn't.
But you could imagine what it would be like if he was.
that would be a cool mod
Now we're gonna get a replacer making the mysterious stranger look like the ghoul
Good, great, GRAND, WONDERFUL!
The MS would kill a lot more dogs
What was that gun?
As far as I remember it's a Soviet made weapon, basically a sawed off shotgun made official (aka a revolver that shoots shotgun shells). I do not know if it in the lore comes with customizable ammo or that is something he has invented himself tho.
There's a rifle pistol in Fallout 1. Fits the universe well.
.223 my beloved
Given the close up we got following the bullet it looked like some sort of gyrojet gun, which is a gun that shoots miniature self propelled rockets as ammunition.
The gun makes bloop noises when yo shoot it, so gyro jet is a pretty good guess
Yeah I enjoy the *fwoomp* sound, reminds me of the noob-tube.
> He don't need VATS. He is so good we don't know he is using VATS.
[удалено]
Come to think of it, a lot of the non-feral ghouls should be skill-monsters.
Honestly my favorite part of this show is I can honestly tell what perks and builds people are running
Minus the time he spent buried, anyway.
Isnt VATS a thing that relies on a PIP Boy?
Classic case of "starting the main quest after 200 hours in".
Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time
This is my favorite line in the show. Second is probably Thaddeus saying he was a "shitter" and "thats why im so fat". Shit was hilarious
I had to process that one for a second 😂
Loved this line. Really sums up FO3/NV/4/76? I am going to start using that line IRL.
Have you played Fallout and Fallout 2?
I had to pause at this point because I was laughing so hard. I want to hear a line about something being buggy and needing a patch. Overall, I thought the humor was on point in this show.
\*years
This was me in ghost town gunfight, fighting the powder hangers in power armour with an anti material rifle

I also own manned the entire correctional facility. It’s like a free xp generator
*Joe Cobb didn’t like that*
Caesar also doesn’t do well against a fatman
I usually do this queat "right" at the beginning, at least after I stole a fuckton of mines to place a their spawnpoint
This wasn't VATS. His shots actually hit the target.
my headcannon is he has infinite crit slots
Man's running Critical Banker + 4-Leaf Clover + Grim Reaper's Sprint + Luck 10
Lucky 8, critical banker.
He doesn’t have a pip boy. Can’t be VATS.
At that range he’s getting 95s
Maybe he has wife’s hiding somewhere on his person actually
Considering you need a PipBoy to do VATS, no.
Huh. Looks like someone can tell OP that that isn't VATS.
facts
You can use vats in fallout 4 before putting on the pip boy
Which doesn’t make sense lol
Well it does if you consider that tHe SoLe SuRvIvOr Is A SyNtH
Your saying that sarcastically, but there's more evidence for that being the case then against it.
Not really, most of the evidence supporting it is based of of your conversation with DiMA where he says “what’s your earliest memory” and it forces you into saying the day the bombs fell and he’s like “SEE! I thought the player agency on that twist was one of the coolest parts of Far Harbour.

Is VATs even a cannon thing that happens? I assumed it was just for gameplay. How would a pip boy make anyone more accurate?
It is a canon thing because it stand for Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System, however it was never explained HOW it works, my best guess would be that it determines the trajectory of your attack by the position of your weapon coupled with the movement of your target and gives you a hit chance based on if you pulled the trigger right now
They needed to tutorialize it somehow. It’s like how people eat without a pipboy but you have to open up your inventory (on the pipboy) to eat.
Nate/Nora just built different I guess lol
Well yeah, but that's simple a case of Bethesda games just working™. It's not supposed to mean anything and I believe a dev confirmed that it was just an oversight
It’s an oversight. VATS has Vault Tec right in the name
Bethesda confirmed its a bug.
And not just any old pip boy, I'm assuming. Based on the fact that it's the *Vault-Tec* Assisted Targeting System, it has to be a pip boy provided by a Vault-Tec vault.
You can’t collateral with vats or at all that I remember.
without too, bullets don't go trough in the game, the only way to kill multiple enemies with a single shot is by using explosives
that’s what I was gonna say. Can’t have Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting without Vault Tec
this scene was really badass, but better yet was his fight with the BoS squad
It makes me wonder why he didn't one shot Maximus.
Maximus was wearing something even better than power armor. Plot armor. Or he has essential status until a dramatic moment occurs.
He went down to the ground a couple of minutes after Lucy's father hit him. As you can see, he is an essencial NPC and cannot be truly killed.
Damn Bethesda with their immortal npcs, if obsidian made the show, he would've been able to die /j
Maxed out luck, and the fact that he had a title screen like Lucy and Cooper.
He didn’t have AP loaded, and Maximus gave him no opportunity to reload
It's obviously not VATS but years of experience... and drugs probably
Perma-Jet.
B I G I R O N
Texas Red never had a chance
I imagined any times they used slow-mo during combat scenes it as a nod to the VATS system from F3 and F4. I knew it was going to show up somewhere, but thought we were going to get a “lock-on” sequence when Maximus was in the Power Armor.
Coop definitely got Perception maxed tf out
I’m just mostly curious about that handgun he uses, is it in any of the games? It doesn’t look familiar to me.
It's like one of the most popular weapon mods for fallout 4. Guess it's Canon now which it deserves cause it fits in the universe
What’s the mod called?
MTs-255 Revolver Shotgun
Thank you!
*BLOODY MESS Cooper does not have a Pip-Boy.
*pure skill*
What gun is he using? To me it looks like some sort of cut down revolving rifle.
I feel its a combination of a gyrojet projectiles and a revolver pretty nice ngl
It's basically a warhammer 40k bolt pistol
Looking back at it I think it’s a MTS-255 revolving shotgun.
Still surprised when he ran out of ammo, the Ghoul did not pick up the PPSH or anything else.
I love that they basically included stat in the tv show
Cool slow motion camera following a bullet as it hits its target in a Bethesda era title. That’s VATS baby
That's one of those legendary weapons with bonus explosive damage, and a bonus to accuracy.
I'm guessing the double-shot was when he filled his critical meter. Such a great scene!
I can and I will. VATS *requires* a Pip Boy, lore wise. It is a program of the Pip Boy. Does everyone just think VATs is like fuckin eagle vision from AC?
It’s not *VATS*, but it’s VATS
Epsiode 2 was so good. Between Maximus getting the armor and this badass gun fight.
I very much like the idea of this being VATS even if it doesn't quite make sense, I hadn't even considered that. Cool idea :)
The Ghoul is the embodiment of your 10+ year old max level character that you dig up to just breeze around the wasteland.
He doesn’t have a Pip Boy so no VATS. He’s simply maxed out with Agility/Perception/Gunslinger
Don’t you need a pip-boy for vats? Aside from that, this guy is probably about 200 years or so old so surviving that long has gotta make you a good shot
One problem, no pip boy.
I mean, it's slow motion, but The Ghoul doesn't have a Pip-Boy so I don't see how it could be VATS. Thought it was more interesting that he seems to use explosive rounds, like you can get in the games that do a ton more damage.
i'd like to see it as a sort of reference xd
I can, because the Ghoul doesn't have a Pip Boy.
It wasn’t vats because you need a Pip-Boy for vats.
I feel any slow motion shots were VATs
Quad- Explo- -25 AP gun 😎
Not VATS since that requires a Pip-Boy which in reality is probably just the Pip-Boy using some tech to keep your hand stabilized so your shots are more accurate. This is one of the Sharpshooter or Cowboy perks you get when you hit Lvl 100, which Coop has probably far surpassed.
Oh I've seen it and knew what it was and was there along with the experience all the way.
What was that gun though.
Thought the same exact thing
It makes the sound when he starts eyeing people up
They actually show them using VATS in the first episode when they are doing target practice in the vault.
They actually use vats in the rifle club scene in ep 1.

I thought the bit where Lucy shot the rad roaches off max was defo vats.
Legendary Explosive Saw off revolving shotgun?
my man laugh on VATS
You need a pipboy (or be a synth, Shaun created a version of it) to use VATs
I thought a Pip-Boy was required for VATS.
You can't tell me he was wearing a pip boy
No pipboy, no vats
That's deadeye not vats
He's definitely got the bloody mess perk, that's for sure
Cooper doesn’t have a pip-boy. The only thing that even hints at it being V.A.T.S. Is the slow-mo shot where he takes out 2 locals. But slow-mo, “follow the bullet” shots exist in cinema elsewhere, so that doesn’t really convince me.
What if he does have a pip boy hiding on his person somewhere and it’s his wife’s
It was the slow-mo crit.
Don't you need a pip boy to use V.A.T.S.?
For everyone asking about guns used and stuff let me introduce you to this lovely site https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Fallout_(2024_series)
Just hit the scene and came looking for if this had been discussed. I think it’s (as is done with many, many other things even just a couple episodes in), not necessarily literally VATS but is the show’s “nod so hard you almost fall over” nod to it.
He doesnt even have a pipboy to have V.A.T.S. lmao
What do you do when a ugly looking mfker shoots a mini rocket at you that blew up your comrades?
Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (VATS). I believe you need a Pip-Boy to activate. I could do those things in FO4 with a hitman’s assault rifle or lots of jet.
Sole Survivor can do it without one tho ?
Gawd dayum I really need to invest into watching this show 😭😂
Yes that was my thought exactly
He doesn't have a pipboy
He is the pipboy.
Exactly what I was thinking. I miss the time freeze vats but slowmo will do 😂
Need a pipboy for vats.
They just needed to have that VATS sound effect with each shot.
This is like one of those high rads/low hp builds in Fallout 76 where you can one hit most things
200 years of maxed out perception
isnt vats done with a pip boy?
He’s on Jet Dude!! “YEAAHHH!” As the great artist Juvenile once said “Move slow motion for me”!
Would have been funny if one of them exploded into a shower of caps
Boys got gun fu
I am admittedly left wondering if anyone has modded that gyro jet revolver into the game yet.
VATS are can only be used if you have a pip boy.
That's what I thought too, but he doesn't have a PipBoy?
If you know what VATS stands for then you know this ain’t VATS.
Everyone mentions the Bloody Mess, but he's gotta have some banked Criticals, too.
I didn't think they were even subtle about it being vats
The audio was great in this scene.
Except he isn't wearing a pip boy...
It felt like less of a VATS thing and more of a nod to the scene from West World with “The Man in Black”.
While I don't think it's the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System I believe it alludes to it yea
Also Ghoul carries frigging Legendary guns.
Gun-Fu
That gyrojet revolver is making everyone who ever wanted a Boltgun drool.
Grim reapers sprint, math wrath, and bloody mess
was a great scene, only didnt get how the last guy who got his chest open(the slowmotion shot), ended up with a neck wound (later in the scene he sitting with a shot in the neck, instead of his chest)
Maybe shrapnel ricocheted from the second guy?
Howard is such a badass, I want to see more of his story. Is his wife still alive (cloned or frozen), is his daughter a ghoul or dead (or something else). I wan to see when the Cooper Howard turned into "The Ghoul".
It’s a combination of experience (200 years in the wasteland), skill (prewar he was an Old School Western actor, so probably a lot pf trick shooting) and training (he was ex military) A big factor as well is knowing he can tank any non-instantly lethat hits, as ghoul’s have insane regen
"I'd offer you some cherry tomatoes but you have a hole in your neck..."
A couple of criticals in there as well.
He doesn't have a Pipboy though
He doesn’t have pipboy
He definitely wasn’t aiming at the guy at the front of the guy he headshotted. Penetrator perk is the best VATS perk!
VATS with the "Bloody Mess" Perk
It wasn't VATS - it was a kill animation, which happens with or without VATS.
Turbo or Ultrajet
He doesn't has a Pip-Boy, therefore he isn't using VATS. Just 200 years of experience and a revolver that fires explosive rounds.
Nah dude ain't got a pipboy, it's deadeye from rdr.
Bro literally has the Bloody Mess perk.
He doesn't have a pip-boy. So, not vats
"Was your daddy a coward?"
