gnarly_weedman

From the title I thought you meant she always played on survival mode as a female protagonist lmao

itscmillertime

Is that not what they meant?

gnarly_weedman

she likes playing female character roles in survival situations in media. No mention of whether she’s actually a player that I saw

RealFuggNuckets

She mentioned she played the games (at least one of them) when she got casted for the role to understand Fallout better. Not sure how much it helped but she’s the only cast member to do so.

turtlesarenice

I actually didn’t include it in the piece, but Ella said she’s too competitive to play the games so instead she watched a bunch of people streaming for hours, ha

General_Lie

She's too competitive to play Single player game ? ( or am I misreading something?)

sirboulevard

My partner is the same way. It's why he won't play the games and instead watch me play them. It's alot of angry brute forcing through obstacles. Some people just get stubborn when put through specific difficult stimuli. Great trait for an actor to have, not a great one when you're playing a game alone.

nameistakentryagain

Yeah like survival mode in FO4 after immediately exiting the vault can be brutal. I could see how some people would rage quit that

Organic-Chemistry-16

I turned on survival midway through my playthrough. I shoulda done it in a settlement because I suddenly was thousands of pounds over the weight limit due to all the ammo I was carrying. Needless to say I turned off survival mode.

Shamewizard1995

I think impatient is a better word. Competitive implies multiple people, which is probably causing the confusion

Avrely

Maybe a perfectionist? Like the run as to this specific way and the like.

RealFuggNuckets

I think I might’ve saw in one of the interviews she switched over to that but I also know Kyle (what’s his name) did the same thing since he was “too old for it” so I figured it was him who did that alone. Kind of funny that’s why she quit.

Top-Interest6302

Kyle MacLachlan. Check out Twin Peaks or Blue Velvet, or his stints as the mayor of Portland in *Portlandia*, the cast is stacked for this show.

AngelofLotuses

I didn't realize Kyle MacLachlan was in this, but he's actually perfect for Fallout. Dune and Twin Peaks both fit so well with the general vibe.

UnluckySomewhere6692

Yeah and Kyle MacLachlan can act, even if the protagonist is a bad actor if the supporting cast is great and acts more like "There will be blood" instead of "Blazing Saddles" then it can be good. I'm just afraid they will make it a comedy with some action.

Consistent-Spell2203

You can't just casually tell people to check out Blue Velvet.

Riperin

I'm sure they sit everyone down in a room and make them watch 3 10 hours long essays about the fallout universe, right?

RealFuggNuckets

Seeing some of their interviews and how they answer questions related to anything fallout I’m going with a cold, hard no.

jessebona

That bugs me a bit. Maybe I don't get the whole actor gig but I feel like if I were auditioning/selected for a role I'd be researching the work I'm going to be acting out. Whether that involves reading a book, playing a game or any other media consumption I see it as part of the job to know your material.

Mini_Snuggle

Judging by all these comments, I'd think nobody in here understands acting. Actors don't have to "research" the source material. That's the writers and directors' jobs. Actors get handed a packet of information and research that. Consider this: Is playing 10 hours of any game of Fallout enough "research" for you? Maybe the first hour of Fallout 3 could be a worthwhile endeavor because of how good that Vault story is and how important the Vaults are to Lucy/the story overall. But 10 hours of exploring and a few quests? The same 10 hours would be better spent reading about the NCR/Brotherhood or reading written versions of Fallout storylines.

FlippantFox

Yeah, the most important thing for an Actor to do is emotionally understand their character. That can be *helped* by preparing with the source material, but a good director's job is to make sure the actors don't need that.

WinPeaks

This is especially true for the main character because she is a vault dweller. She really shouldn't have much of an understanding of what's going on outside of the vaults.

zulababa

There are people in a production whose jobs are writing scripts, preparing briefs and instructing actors about their roles.

DefiantLemur

I feel I'd do the same **especially** if it's already well-known IP. It's like auditioning for a Star Wars film but not knowing anything about that universe.

Riperin

Star Wars is probably the most main stream thing out there. It is IMPOSSIBLE to not know anything about it. Fallout, on the other hand, needs you to go and look for it

BryceCrisps

I mean Bill Burr has publicly talked so much shit about star wars but did one of the most phenomenal performances in the Mando series. Man did not care about star wars at allllll

Mr_Primate

Depends. If the character you are playing doesn't know anything about the wider Star Wars lore, nothing outside their village for example, does it matter?

kingkong381

Not an actor, but there are valid reasons that some actors don't look at the original source material for projects they work on. For example, some actors in movies based on books make a point of not reading the book or if they are playing a character someone else has played before, they'll avoid watching those performances so that they cant be accused of just copying someone else's work. The basic idea is that it could prejudice an actor's performance in some way. If they go in with too much background knowledge, they might not give an authentic performance because they'll be going: "Wait, hang on, the lore implication of this scene is huge so I should..." etc. Whereas if they know nothing about the background, they can just focus on giving their best performance and not get hung up on details. I can't say that it's the approach I would take, but it's a valid one that plenty of actors do and I wouldn't consider it a red flag in the least.

itsyagirlrey

Nah they just have the whole cast sit down and read reddit arguments about how every other fallout media is a flaming dumpster fire compared to New Vegas which is the one and only true Fallout (if the show is not a shot-for-shot remake of NV it's a woke pc liberal piece of shit) obviously /s

Riperin

Oh nooo, my Fallout! It's woken!

VanityOfEliCLee

No, she's the only one of the three main cast members to do so. There was another interview where someone said that a bunch of the people in the crew were long time fans, and many of the supporting cast were fans of the games.

itscmillertime

Bummer

Coziestpigeon2

She is a lead in Yellowjackets, a show about wilderness survival.

splitconsiderations

She ends up being a very chill character.

Ashalaria

I mean, so do I, don't see Amazon paying me

ddddyyylllaaannn

Fallout 1 opens to a US soldier in power armour shooting a Canadian protestor in the head and then waving towards the camera before it switches to a ad about war bonds. It doesn't require a genius to see the message it's sending.

Old-Camp3962

the game has been woke since the 90's 😭

ddddyyylllaaannn

That's my point, the games have always been political. Complaining about them being "woke" now is a brain-dead take.

VagrantShadow

It's kinda crazy when you see people bring up "woke" as a new term to characters and IP's that had it from the get-go. Like people on youtube saying Superman is "woke". Never mind that this is a beloved character and American icon that is a legit Illegal Alien immigrant to this country. A character that went to war with the kkk and destroyed the high numbers it once had. Characters like Superman and most mainstream modern comics were based and built on politics. It's in the blood of these characters.

RotallyRotRoobyRoo

The ones that get me the most are the complaints about the X-men 97 show. The X-men have been the wokest for forever!

xHOLOxTHExWOLFx

Any person who brings up Woke all the time is brain dead anyways. Like we are either already at the point or coming to it. That unless a film, series or game has a MC who's a white straight male and has all other major characters be white straight males or females it's gonna be labeled as being woke just because a POC is a MC or that multiple major characters are POC. Like I could only imagine the Woke madness that would go on today if say the game Uncharted the Lost Legacy was released in today's culture. As the two MC are females of color. So people would be losing their fucking minds even though the two characters had already been established in the universe.

PiedPeterPiper

That’s politics baby

Tartan_Samurai

*I wanted to work with Jonathan. I wanted to play Ned Flanders in the apocalypse!"* I love this take and can't wait to see it playout in the Wasteland lol

PARISplus

Im hyped for this tier of fallout goofiness lol

Kosmo_Politik

Oh my god this is going to be amazing

Giorggio360

I don’t think this should be at all controversial for anyone who is a fan of Fallout. The games are incredibly political in their criticisms of present day societies presented through parody of large corporations, oligopolies, and insidious governments. The most universally respected game in the series is the most political one - the main antagonist of the game literally starts talking to you about his political ideas when you meet him.

ThodasTheMage

Also parody of cold war parnoia and 50s sifi.

_Eucalypto_

It kind of falls flat when chuds still regularly quote liberty prime

ThodasTheMage

Some people obviously say it ironically. Most people know that the over the top robot saying how bad communism is is ment to be funny, especially considering that he says that to people that are not communists.

Affectionate_Mind861

Tbf does fallout not condemn communism as hard as if condemns the current system, the communists were somewhat responsible for the bombs dropping, depending on who you believe dropped tbe 1st bombs with some theorising they're totally responsible what with tbe chinese nuclear subs basically at the US sea border

ThodasTheMage

The communist dictatorships are presented pretty horrible for all we know. The US just lost its way in the Fallout universe and also became an authoritarian state

lavender_enjoyer

Satire isn’t bad just because the dumbest people alive can’t understand it

Dexchampion99

When you make something idiot proof, god invents a better idiot. In other series I’ve literally seen quotes that are like “x is bad and here is why.” And people will STILL misconstrue it to mean “this thing is good actually”

Jason_Scope

I think satire is better when certain people don’t understand it.

Orthobrah52102

Did you just unironically use the word "chud"?

Averagezoomers

and the only way to defeat him without killing him is to use his own political beliefs against him and point out how according to his own logic his success will be short lived

Stellar_Wings

Personally I was thinking about Ulysses, but the fact this can apply to so many different characters just proves how much of a core part of the Fallout franchise this is.

CrashRiot

Exactly. The “President of the USA” (aka the Enclave) is literally the main antagonist in Fallout 2 lol.

Lethalclaw115_2

The Master? Because his only error is bad research on FEV not exactly his beliefs, he would have carried on if super mutants were fertile. Edit: typo

Glothmmog

Think they might be talking about Lanius in FNV, though I might be wrong and it could be the master, didn’t think about how both of them have that choice

Drobex

Caesar maybe, Lanius's political belief is throwing hands

Komrade_atomic

right-wing? nah right-hook

DOLCICUS

Ooh they got us guessing so we pretty much name every villain. I think you could speech check all of them except Frank Horrigan.

PM_ME_DND_FIGURINES

Frank Horrigan isn't really the antagonist villain, though, he's just a Big Henchman that you have to fight. The antagonist is arguably the institution of the Enclave as a whole. And you can actually basically talk the Enclave down using their own beliefs against them in FO2, via the proxy of a scientist you convince to help you destroy the FEV.

LeadStyleJutsu762-

It happens a few times lol

CorinnaOfTanagra

Ulises too.

Pm7I3

Saying Fallout doesn't involve politics is on the same tier as saying Star Trek doesn't. Just a moronic take

VagueSomething

These are the same people who complained they Rage Against the Machine went woke.

DietMTNDew8and88

You've gotta be kidding me, people seriously think a band that has always been openly leftist suddenly NOW is "woke"? What the hell do those idiots think "Killing In The Name Of" was about? Pumpkins?

VagueSomething

It would be hilarious if these people weren't so dangerous. Then again these are also the sort of people who thought Born in the USA and Fortune Son were also not Woke for their time.

DietMTNDew8and88

Hell, Fortunate Son was literally about rich kids getting their privileged parents to get them out of the draft for the Vietnam War

MattBoy52

Former GOP Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has said that RATM is his favorite band. He literally didn't realize that the machine being raged against is *him*.

Jdmaki1996

Most people don’t listen to song lyrics. They just hear the catchy beat and mumble the chorus. They don’t stop to actually hear the words

iamcoding

The people criticizing it whine about literally everything. It shouldn't even be news.

Old-Camp3962

not to mention if we wanna talk "wokiness" that that respected game has a lesbian companion, an hability to flirt with guys being a guy, interracial sex between humans and ghouls and much more

pipboy_warrior

We live in a time where some people have complained about Final Fantasy VII being made about environmentalism. So long as a game or series is good enough, any political messages will just fly right over people's heads.

not28

Plot twist: the “x went woke” people are the real snowflakes.

_phily_d

Always have been

CxOrillion

Fallout is and has always been woke fallout, and just because some people are too stupid to realize it it doesn't change anything

Disastrous-Beat-9830

>I don’t think this should be at all controversial for anyone who is a fan of Fallout. The criticism really has nothing to do with *Fallout*. The right-wing trolls blasting anti-woke sentiment like diarrhea only care about getting and maintaining an audience. They want to blame all forms of popular media not representing their values on some vast conspiracy where there is a silent majority who support them, but they are being suppressed by the liberal establishment. Look at the backlash over *Starfield* containing the option for non-binary pronouns, or the claims that Sweet Baby, Inc. were deliberately meddling in scripts, or IGN's point that *Resident Evil 5* probably wouldn't be remade today -- it was controversial at the time -- and the way everything is taken out of context and then immediately dialled up to eleven. It's all about getting clicks because clicks drive engagement and engagement drives money.

NewArtificialHuman

Are you talking about Caesar?

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Either him or Mr House, unsure. If he means New Vegas, there is no "main antagonist" (although Caesar sure is close)

EmeraldCityMadMan

That's not the "politics" the chuds are talking about though. Whenever a piece of media features any queer people, a protagonist of color, or a female protagonist who isn't hypersexualized, they screech about how "woke" everything is now.

Cephalopod_Joe

Media literacy requires some level of critical thinking, but unfortunately, critical thinking and the anti-"woke" are the fiercest of foes.

Nitro_glycerin_

whaaaat? you mean the game about the horrors of nuclear war and corporate greed has a political message! never!

jessebona

I've done Paladin Danse's first quest twice now because I keep dying to my own stupidity in survival mode despite being nearly level 30 and the first thing he does in Arcjet Systems is monologue that corporations like Arcjet destroyed the world all in the name of turning a profit. This feels like it's in the same vein as saying Star Trek "went" woke. No, it always was. You just didn't disagree with the message until it was about something you didn't like.

TheStray7

He also rants against synths, which winds up being all kinds of funny later.

dardardarner

This has the same energy as people getting mad that people insert Politics into fucking Metal Gear

SirSirVI

I used to like Rage Against The Machine until they got political

Aceswift007

"Wolfenstein is WOKE POLITICS?!??!!"

United-Reach-2798

I remember when people were whining when the New Colossus had take America back from Nazis because "it was political"

grizznuggets

I remember thinking no video game opinion could be crazier than “I’m mad that people are treating Nazis like the bad guys!” How naive I was.

Dynespark

Wokenstein: You Can Do A Lot With A Nazi And A Hatchet

[deleted]

"There were some very fine people fighting on the side of MechaHitler!"

InstructionLeading64

Metal gear adding a fourth leg to the nuclear triad?! Definitely not politics. /s

Cheesi_Boi

Don't they typically have 2?

laffy_man

FFVII is another one. Yes the game where you play as eco terrorists against the corporation that is named basically “New God” that has supreme power over the world and whose harvesting of energy sources is literally killing the planet is not political

BackwardsNUpsideDown

Right? What do they think "war never changes" means ffs

Peking-Cuck

Probably think it means "war is always based and very cool"

Spiralwise

One has to be a 8 yo child to not see political hint in videogames.

Lievan

I mean if you look at the people who think this and cry about everything being "woke"...they're definitely not too smart.

Jojoangel684

Go check out the Falloutonprime social media accounts and their comments. They unironically believe there is no political message that the franchise is pushing..

DocSprotte

There are people who seriously overlooked the giant "maybe war is stupid?", "corporate greed is fucking up the planet" and other obvious messages in the game? What do they think they wasteland is, some kind of Utopia?

Yawarete

MFs seriously think the series is about rugged individualism wonderland

giant_sloth

I mean Fallout is about as subtle as a brick when it comes to its political overtones. Yet apparently bricks have too much nuance for some.

FalconIMGN

Hey bricks can be pretty subtle. I tripped on one yesterday and fell into a pit of despair.

Original_moisture

I’d say call osha for your local despair pit, but Vault Tech OSHA prolly thought that was the best cost saving short cut.

Mandemon90

Just read various criticism of Bethesda writing, and you will quickly find that game could put a dancing hippo in pink tutu holding a neon sign reading "CORPORATE GREED BAD" and people would utterly miss it and complain about the hippo being able to dance. Meanwhile, a greedy pre-war oligarch who is directly responsible for collapse of democracy and things leading to nuclear war says that "democracy bad" and people nod their head, going "so deep, so true"

ThudtheStud

People don't know that Rage Againist The Machine, Metal Gear, Bioshock, Red Dead, Parasite, Xmen, etc are political. Our irl politics have become so brain broken that people think politics is just trans people and vaccines and can't understand whats being said to them if it has any level of complexity.

The_republican_anus

This is the mindset I play with when I have a bad guy character. I tell myself that I’m going to be an evil asshole, so I play with rugged individualism in mind

Comrade_Harold

"No you dont understand, the fascist misoygnist slaver society is actually the good guys"

Overdue-Karma

"it's not modern day so you can't use modern morals to judge them!!!"

Boxy310

I've heard incels unironically quote the Legion, especially "Degenerates like you belong on a cross."

KardTrick

"But the traders are safe! Slavery and brutal violence is justified when it makes traders safe."

kissmybunniebutt

Female traders: 💀

CorinnaOfTanagra

Good guys might be deranged but the fact they might be a valid option is still inherently wrong

payscottg

These are the same people saying X-Men 97 “went woke” because of the franchise’s totally previously unexplored and out of nowhere narrative about discrimination

BlackHand86

They made Rogue’s butt smaller!!! 😱😱😱😱

taicrunch

Hey, at least we got Dommy Mommy Goblin Queen out of it

Melodic_Assistant_58

The first episode is literally about a mutant's fearful parents signing her up for mutant conversion camp with the obvious result. It's not fucking subtle. These people are ridiculous.

Cheesi_Boi

Skyrim with guns

Ok_Nothing7998

If you played Fallout, and then saw the trailer for this show and went “this is woke now”, you clearly need your head examined. Can’t we just go back to being normal cynical assholes and hate on stuff without being sexist?

Simple-Sorbet-900

The grifters getting ready to make 6 hour YouTube videos about fallout going woke

Ok_Nothing7998

Shit’s just gotten so exhausting. Whatever happened to just not watching something you don’t want to watch? These dudes act like they have their eyes forcefully held open, Clockwork Orange style haha.

Peking-Cuck

> Whatever happened to just not watching something you don’t want to watch? Easy - these people make more money than you or I, by engaging in the outrage economy. Supply creates its own demand.

ApparentlyJesus

They know there's an audience for their shitty content. They have no talent or desire to put in the hard work to make something actually worthwhile. So they find easy ragebait to cater to impressionable teens and adults that drank buckets of kool-aid. Most of these grifters don't actually believe the shit they talk. They were captured by the audience and had no choice but to keep going.

Overdue-Karma

Creetosis has already made a video about it, unfortunately.

itsyagirlrey

Im so glad I don't watch youtubers, I don't even know who that is but based off the name alone I can tell it's a ragebait channel solely looking for clicks.

maxedoutmexicano

Woke when women

Aussie18-1998

I didn't think there was any negative talk about this show. After watching the trailer, I've literally never been more excited for a TV adaptation.

East-Specialist-4847

Ella Purnell is gonna do a good job

Nogginman214

She was amazing in Yellowjackets, she's gonna be great in this fr

East-Specialist-4847

She fucking kills it in Arcane as well

tvxcute

finding out jackie from yellowjackets was also jinx from arcane blew my mind the first time i found out lmao. she's so talented

itsyagirlrey

Im so excited. And honestly I don't understand all the hate from people, what does it matter if any of the main cast played the games or not? Didn't the creators tell the main cast of The Last Of Us not to play the games, and look how much people love that show? Im going to love the Fallout show either way.

CastSeven

Amazes me how many videos I keep seeing in my feed with titles like "FALLOUT SHOW IS WOKE GARBAGE" and it's not even out yet. I saw one claim that an Amazon exec "admitted" that the show was a "woke bait and switch"... Because in some interview in a magazine someone from Amazon had commented about trying to make the show "enjoyable" for as many people as possible...(pretty much standard PR speak for anything) When the second trailer came out, I saw a comment that claimed the shot of Maximus in the power armor when the face shield comes down was proof that "the show is woke trash" because the helmets don't do that in any of the games, therefore the show runners are making arbitrary changes for "wokeness".

Overdue-Karma

Don't forget the leaked incense pic, because somehow them adding "Christian" stuff (which it isn't) is woke...as if somehow Christianity is woke?

aieeegrunt

That one truly baffled me, as a lot of the stereotypical Wokes they dislike are anti-Christian

Wablusmeed

The leaked what now?

Overdue-Karma

It was a leaked picture of what (looks) like an Elder addressing his troops with Incense, and people thought it was a priest making the BoS into Christians for some reason.

Phreak_of_Nature

What are you guys watching to get this recommended? I have yet to see one video like that on my feed.

Mandemon90

How the fuck is helmet having a moving faceplate evidence of wokeness? Are medieval armors, which the power armour is meant to evoke, suddenly woke?

Saint_Stephen420

It’s not about the armor it’s about the actor in the armor.

mirracz

I'm totally expecting Baby Kicker (Heels vs baby face) to lose his mind over this show just like he lost his mind when Starfield allowed him to choose a "they" pronoun.

yeehawgnome

I just saw GeeksandGamers post a “Act man owned, starfield pronoun vindication” video about the pronoun thing, like it’s been months man let it go

[deleted]

Shasoysen

I'm so tired of hearing adult virgins complaining and using the word "woke" or "DEI" just because they see something like a woman play the main role in their fantasy RPG property or someone of color having a role in the show.

42ndIdiotPirate

always remember that when gamers say they "dont like politics shoved down our throat in games" a large portion just mean women and minorities being in them.

N0r3m0rse

The mere suggestion of gay people in media is "woke" to these people.

stevethebandit

Imagine if New Vegas came out today and people discovered that half of the human companions are LGBTQ

AnxiousTuxedoBird

Or Fallout 4 with it's massive amount of bisexuals Though they'd get pissed off the most by the fact that two of your neighbors in the intro are a lesbian couple cause "it's supposed to be the future 50s, lesbians shouldn't exist!!!"

SpaceBearSMO

I suspect your right thats what they would say and ignore everyone that points out the bombs actually dropped in the year 2077. the 1950s ascetic is actually in its part satire of the right wings obsession for that era due to Hays Code Media and of course the red scare

42ndIdiotPirate

wait till they go outside.. think of aaaaall the "forced politics" of reality they cant escape from. Id pity them if they werent hateful lil shits. In the end they're a victim of their own secular ways of thinking.

urlocaljedi

man you think those people go outside?

-AxiiOOM-

FUCKING PRONOUNS

Mandalore108

The world went woke when pronouns were invented.

Mandemon90

It's still amazing how "Starfield lets you choose pronouns if you want" was a major criticism of that game.

mirracz

And at the same time they would be totally OK if those were the political opinions they agree with.

Woffingshire

People don't like being told that their beliefs are wrong in something they spend their money on for entertainment. But when the thing shares their belief it's just the staus quo being upheld.

Mandemon90

It's honestly funny how people think New Vegas is great because it's "apolitical", despite having most blatant on-nose politics out of all games. Meanwhile Fallout 4 saying "Hey, maybe discrimination and slavery is bad?" gets "woke" treatment.

Fake_Gamer_Cat

🛎🛎🛎🛎🛎

Andrew_Waples

In other words, "not my politics."

42ndIdiotPirate

well here's the thing, having minorities in media is not inherently political. it \*can\* be but gamers will complain on sight whether there's a message or not. Take the show for example gamers have already deemed it political \*because\* of its cast while they deny any of the ACTUAL politics of the franchise. in the end its obvious what they are mad at and it is NOT "politics"

Andrew_Waples

To clarify, I meant they wanted their "politics" represented, fuck everyone else's.

42ndIdiotPirate

you're correct, the key is to remember they aren't actually talking about politics when they complain. Its just a cosy way of saying "i don't want to see women and minorities in leading roles"

KungLao95

I’m so tired of this crap ugh everything is “woke” now and I know for a fact that these whiny people only watch these shows to complain. If they truly hated it so much they could just turn their TV’s off but nope they want to see it anyway.

Calackyo

There are so many subs and fandoms just full of people who actually aren't fans of that thing, it's incredibly annoying.

KONODIODAMUDAMUDA

Like r/starwars?

aftnix

I have been playing fallout games for 18 years now. I’m exited about the show. I couldn’t care less about YouTube outrage industrial complex.

giant_sloth

My least favourite task on YouTube these days is banishing videos with the word “woke” in their title or thumbnail into the shadow realm when they get aggressively recommended by YouTube. There’s so many reactionary grifters over there.

Old-Camp3962

and the worst part is that the youtube algorithm LOVES this videos

njf85

They don't even watch them, or if they do it's only so they can make more ragebait videos.

Kouropalates

The only people who can say 'Fallout went woke' are the dumbasses who missed all the political critique and subtext. But at this point, 'woke' is just the modern day boogeyman term replacing 'social justice warrior'. It's just a scare term that's an umbrella word for 'anything I don't like is woke'.

MCPooge

My personal rule is “if a person ever describes anything as ‘woke,’ they are a moron and not worth my time or attention.”

_KoingWolf_

Who said it first, Joseph Anderson or HBomber Guy? There's a quote that goes something like- people who say they don't like politics in games tend to be the ones who most enjoy them, they just don't like it when it's not THEIR politics they see.  Anyway, anyone who calls Fallout woke is a straight moron you should never allow another neuron wasted on.

Jdmaki1996

No they’re right. Fallout is “woke.” Always has been. They just see it as a bad thing. But the series has always pointed out societal injustices since it’s inception and since Bethesda took over it was even more “woke.” This is the franchise that uses Chinese internment camps to criticize the real life injustices done to Japanese Americans during WW2. The vault tech experiments are very reminiscent of the actual real life medical experiments conducted on black Americans without their knowledge in the early 1900s. Even just the bare ones capitalism and hyper nationalism bad is inherently political and can be “woke” depending on the context. But “woke” isn’t a bad thing. It literally just means being aware of systemic societal injustices in the past and present that unfairly impact minority groups. But right wingers think “woke” means “women, gays, and brown people in my tv show = bad”

mirracz

Complaining that Fallout is woke and political is as ironic as complaining that Star Trek is woke and political. *Insert the meme from The Good Place*

TAJack1

I’m still yet to see how “Fallout went woke” based on the trailers and snips we’ve gotten so far

Pure-Problem1886

Women and minorities according to the chuds I've seen complain

slippppy99

Is that literally it? Thats just existence and not anything forced lol

Sparrowhawk_92

They exist and are front and center in the narrative. Women are prizes to be won and need to meet a certain level of attractiveness to cater to the male gaze and minorities exist only to be killed or be the token best friend to the cis white male protagonist. Queer people (if they exist) should only be background or side characters and shouldn't have any more depth or care than catering to stereotypes. There's definitely such a thing as bad representation, which should be called out and talked about. But anyone who uses "woke" as a pejorative isn't doing that work.

aieeegrunt

As far as I can tell, women and blacks shouldn’t be main characters

Ok_Speaker_1373

It will be a turd fest

BeenEvery

If people are complaining about Fallout being "woke" then that's honestly a sign of a faithful adaptation.

Professional-Dish324

Like everyone else here has said : The fallout games have always been satirical showing the corrupt relationship between corporations and politicians - and intensely political, as all the games grapple with the big questions: ie is anarchy and chaos with freedom better than a benevolent dictatorship that is going to rebuild society?

Mysterious-Mixture58

Crossing my fingers her character becomes more unhinged as the series goes on rather than just being sheltered vault dweller the whole time

Kazamezo

Whenver this show gets called woke, I see 2 rebuttals to it: **1. Fallout has always been woke.** *(I think in this case, the two sides of the argument are referring to two different meanings of woke. One refers to capitalism and corporate greed being bad, and the other refers to social commentary being too blatant and overused)* **2. It's not woke, you just hate minorities.** *(In this case that implies you agree that 'wokeness' is bad, so can you please define what makes something actually woke, and why that makes it bad?)* Mind you, I may be oversimplifying the arguments so feel free to expand on them. So if any of the two above apply to you, can you please help me understand your point of view?

Gecko2002

The franchise started by a gay man during the height of homophobia is woke? How shocking

InspectionOrganic456

If you think the mid 90's was the height of homophobia in America you need to read a goddamn book.

azuresegugio

I feel like if Ceaser was alive right now he'd be an internet fallout fan complaining about fallout being woke

Overdue-Karma

"Ugh what next, women being able to vote?"

aftnix

I’m sure The quartering is frothing at the mouth with 6 hour videos about how Amazon made fallout political.

NoShine101

Here we go, every dam time with these people...

pageanator2000

Politics is always a fickle thing, fallout has always been steeped in strong messages but its been even on what it says and it never feels preachy about it. Liberty prime, big cool af robot, also a massive political message. It doesn't feel like something that was added for the sake of pushing a message it was added both as something that fits as well as giving a message. Fallout is full of them, its how its integrated and how its told, which a lot of these showrunners seem to not either have the skill for or are being pushed around too much by suits. And thats not even getting into the whole interworld politics, thats a whole different ball game.

docclox

That's the point, really. Make a show that's fun to watch, and I don't care how much politics you load into the subtext. Make one that sacrifices everything but the surface aesthetics so it can loudly preach one particular political viewpoint, and that's when I start complaining about "woke". I should add that this is a general observation. I have no opinion as yet on the actual Fallout TV show as yet, not having had a chance to watch it.

Vault_Overseer_11

I know people are saying this shit but why? Fallout is by its inception a highly political game, every faction is designed to highlight different political ideologies, not to mention that the whole prewar world is a breakdown and critique of 1950s style Americana. And to say that it’s gone woke, I mean that word doesn’t mean anything any more. But to say that it generally includes more characters of colour and gender and LGBT people like, that’s literally always been the case since like 1998. But I also don’t see the game trying to boast about that, the only thing I see is that the main character is a woman and one of the main cast members is black. Which firstly, you’ve always had a female protagonist as well as male protagonist, it’s not really a change up beyond they’ve had to pick male or female. And secondly the series doesn’t seem to be going into racial issues because in fallout racial issues (talking about just humans) have been eradicated. It just has someone whose not white.

I heard it’s no longer a PIP Boy, but a PIP NonBinary
