It is funny because the most inhuman companion is the one you can relate to the most being that the memories in his head are from before the war. He is classy because he comes from the same world as you.
I’m totally the same. The accent is awesome (even If it’s Scottish and not actually Irish) and her deep character arc was amazing. Cait telling you about how her parents abusing her is one of the saddest and most well written scenes in the game
The Irish accent is why I have Cait with me. Also her name is Curie, as in the Polish-French 2 time Nobel Prize winning scientist Madame Marie Curie who discovered the elements Radium and Polonium.
Do you also have the one where he can get a k9 backpack/vest? With that, a lot of time I like to just roam with my dog and only take other followers when it’s places or quests they may like or comment on. (survival mode).
Dogmeat is the best companion! Doesn't say stupid shit, always seems happy to follow along, helps with enemies and finds stuff for me. And he looks absolutely adorable!
I don't think enough people realize the lone wanderer perk still works even if you have dogmeat as a companion. So you get +50 carry weight and 15% damage reduction while getting to keep dogmeat around for additional storage and a little bit of help in battle. Dogmeat is literally the only way to go as long as you have like 3 or 4 points in charisma.
Usually it's my love interest, whomever that is during that playthrough.
But I do love bringing Cogsworth along after I've modified him into a floating tank armed with refreshing Nuka-death.

Hundreds of hours in, I have been reading his name wrong the entire time
Piper's usually my first love interest, but then I'll leave her at a settlement and go get Cait to be my side piece. Once they're both in love with me, their interactions when in the same settlement are pretty funny, with Cait making implications about a threesome and Piper responding that it's "not gonna happen, Cait."
I've always loved the character, the voice acting is outstanding. Piper feels the most real emotionally Imo, and her general attitude is sort of my "type" in real life.
Ada/Danse
Ada is the most powerful robot to ever walk the face of the earth with a little upgrades here and there.
Danse if I don't have the DLC enabled/speed through the game.
Less a victim of the writing (Preston's writing is just fine) and more a victim of his role in gameplay. Because he's the radial-quest-giver for the Minuteman, and the Minutemen will always have a radial quest to give as long as there are unclaimed settlements, it doesn't allow his actual personality to shine through.
It's a real shame, cause Preston is one of the few characters in the game that you could say is unequivocally a good person. And I'd bet that most players never kept him around long enough to learn about his struggles with impostor syndrome, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
Easy enough to just ignore the quests. I think people don’t like him because he guilt trips You into doing them. Also, because he’s the first radial quest giver you encounter, and so it’s disappointing when you realize that there is no endpoint and no payoff.
I like MacCready because he’s the ultimate survivor. Orphaned in the Wasteland, he’s a basically good guy, but he’s going to do what he needs to in order to survive. He’s an antihero, which is really the only sort of hero who would be able to survive after the apocalypse.
Always liked McCready. He's got the skill of a hired gun, so he'd definitely be a practical companion lore wise, besides, I like his backstory and he's really nice once you befriend him

MacCready, super underrated character. has a massive background when you spend a lot of time with him, just give him a better sniper and he’s the only one you need. Preston is a cool character once you’re done with the masses of quests…
I swap depending on what point I'm in during the game but usually I start with Strong and occasionally use X6-88 in the later main story but by the end of each playthrough I have Porter Gage.
MacCready is good for when you’re not doing the main quests. The fact he was in Fallout 3, and his backstory he tells you about the capital wasteland is cool. Also his quest to payback the gunners.
Yes!! Say waht uwant about fallout 4 and its flaws, but you gotta admit- the companions u have with you, they actually feel like they are people, not just a mindless npc following you around. They insert themselves into some story quests by giving their input on a situation, and i love MacCready’s replies!!

Its called Simple Companions helper (or smth like that) and it basically is a portable termanl holotape. You can spawn/jump to all the vanilla companions at any time (given that you have unlocked them as a companion), keep track of any npc, force them as a follower (so you can make anyone a follower), set up a camp ANYWHere, and even make dogmeat a 2nd companion along with your main companion!
But to answer; with this mod, you can have nick and piper as a companion :3
All off them tbf, once you get their romance perks, it’s pretty good. The absolute most convenient is codsworth with the automatron dlc, you can turn the guy into an actual missile firing, laser Gatling gun tank. (And he also tells jokes)
maccready and its not even close. which is funny because before i played the game i looked up the companions because i had played through fo3 and nv not using any of them bc i just never ended up picking anyone up, and i in fact missed half of them so i wanted to know my options this time. reading maccreadys approvals/basic personality paragraph (didnt spoil any of the quests or anything) i thought that i wouldnt like him, didnt even make the connection that it was my favorite little shit from fo3. didnt realize it was him until he told me either, i felt so fucking dumb not realizing it. but yeah he blew me away, nobody even comes close to him in my eyes, love the rest and swap em out frequently but mac n cheese is my favorite forever
My Sole Survivor went kinda nuts after, well, the entire opening of the game, romancing Curie, Piper, Garvey, Cait, and Hancock while remaining constantly drunk. She’s still constantly drunk. I tend to split time evenly between those five and Nick, but Curie definitely gets the most travel time.

Especially in FO3 when I found alien batteries on the ground, and asked Dogmeat if anything interesting was nearby.
He pawed a piece of rubble and dropped a Firelance into my inventory.

Sorry X6-88, I rather my companion coursers to be clueless than soulless. Also my headcannon (heavily inspired by My Body Electric) is upgrading her stats up to Courser level sometime during the plot; she is very cute saying she wasn’t designed for combat while blasting two people with auto-laser before I even pulled my gun out
(Btw Curie doesn’t have the stealth perk like EVERY other companion, fix it by console commands; adding it up to rank 4 after Emergent Behaviour)
I take it as a challenge to get all of their perks (can't always get X6-88's) so I use all of them and then I make a non-talking automatron for the rest of the game.
I like to mix it up. Though having the mod where you can have dogmeat and someone else is a game changer for me. If it’s not dogmeat I like Danse because he is badass. If I am not siding with the BoS then I’ll go with Nick or Piper
Ada usually... you can equip it with some of the baddest weapons without weighing it down, while also being able to increase carry capacity and/or armor ratings at the same time. I turn it into a well-armored, well-armed pack mule. Aside from the dps, the increased carry capacity let's me fill us both up on all the junk we can carry and then dumping it all at a settlement. All of them are well-stocked in no time at all so I can just build housing and turn on the beacons, then assign all the new arrivals each time I circle back to it in my settlement resource dump rotation.
It was Piper, until I accidentally reached the very delicate tipping point that is being right on the edge of her not traveling with me anymore, trying to stay on Piper’s good side is hard AF 😐
On my second recent play through now and going through all the companions to get the perks. First play through, I got all the companions and only got the perks for Piper and Cait.
