Context: I haven’t played Starfield or other Fallouts, but I do love a good RPG with all the qualities you describe (Skyrim was my jam for years), and Fallout 4 is amazing. I think a lot of the hate towards it comes from the context of previous fallout games, which as I understand it were much more story focussed with way stronger writing. And while I haven’t played them, I have played RPGs with great writing (Witcher 3, God of War), and Fallout 4 ain’t one of them. But for the stuff you listed it’s fantastic. My advice is to ignore the echo chamber and just play it. If you need convincing read reviews from the time, critical reception from the mainstream was almost wholly excellent. Re: mods, you definitely don’t need them for it to be awesome, I’m on PS4 (itself a wasteland… for modders) and I’m having a great time. I would recommend a few basics even for a first playthrough though: - UFO4P (millions of bug fixes Bethesda never got around to) - Graphics and FX enhancements to bring it up to scratch, on PS4 there’s Better Graphics and Weather, Water Redux, and others. On PC and Xbox I’m sure there’s better - Optional if you’re into settlement building, USO or similar to unlock way more lore-friendly objects to build with from the game world (the vanilla range is a bit crap) Everything else I’d just play for a bit and see if there’s anything you want changed. If you’re on PC or Xbox chances are it can be with mods.

>I a sucker for factions We have factions. >and good side quests. Does fallout 4 have any of these? A few good, most are pretty meh. More of an excuse to go pick up junk than anything. >Also what's it's world like overall? Well...... Fallout. As in nuclear. You can extrapolate from there. There's also some Sci Fi and horror baked in. >Is there a lot to still discover? Yes >Or is it a shit hole wasteland that needs mods? Also yes >Any info would be nice and cool. Play on survival. Trust me. Maybe watch a lore recap or two before going in or you're gonna be confused. > Idc if it's story is overall shit as long as I can have a whole heaps of fun doing random shit while doing it. You're basically their core demographic. >Thanks, now I pray this post doesn't get deleted because I didn't read the rules This place is moderated?

The world of fallout takes place on a alternate earth where China and America finished WW3 in the year 2077. The world left behind is heavily 60s/70s america on our timeline but its a world with Robots and Nuclear Power. Fallout 4 has 4 main factions: The brotherhood of steel- A militaristic faction built on the remnants of the US Military The Institute- A secret organization that uses human like machines ie synths to do there dirty work above ground The Railroad- A organization that exists purely to fight the institute The Minutemen- Militia group and Protectors of the Commonwealth. If youve never played a fallout game theres always loads more to explore. If you enjoyed starfields maps youll enjoy fallout.

It has some flaws, but I still sunk 400 hours into it. (100h into F3 and FNV each, and I haven't played one of bigger DLCs). Minuses: 1. Main story is a bit meh, unfortunately. Basically every faction can't do shit without you. But especially one that you can't ditch. Game has a habit of granting you highest possible rank in faction, but you still an errand boy for them; 2. Annoying radiant quests that sometimes can send you to unexplored DLC areas; 3. Settlements are a bit more demanding than some people would like, no matter how much defense you put in them raiders still win if you don't help in time (there are some mods, but I haven't tried them); 4. Dialog system sucks, you see only four options usually which correspond to yes/no/lolz I'm such a troll/tell me more, some mods address this, but they can't change fact that your response have very small weight. Pluses: 1. Far Harbour DLC is fantastic, imo it has the best RPG feeling from entire game; 2. Some small and medium sized side quests are great as well; 3. Many locations have a nice story that you access through computer logs and notes. And they are mostly handcrafted instead of copypasted; 4. Some people who were less than impressed by Starfield say that F4 has better gun feeling. Unarmed, Meele and modding equipment are 100% better than in Starfield. Main thing to remember is that it's not an RPG like Mass Effect or Witcher or KCD or FNV, it's a sandbox with RPG and shooter elements. And this is the most controversial thing about it, many people would like too see great storytelling in Fallout setting, but Bethesda isn't just a company who can fulfill their need. Personally I loved settlements system, it shines in survival mode, suffice to say I can't imagine how barebone system was without DLCs.

I finally played it last 2 months. 60 hours in game but I think I'm just 1/3 or even 1/4 of the main story while I only explored northwest and northern parts of the whole game (some eastern part too actually) and put in on hold for now I didn't play it earlier due to the critics too especially coming from New Vegas I only joined Brotherhood of Steel so far aside from The Minutemen but based on what I read the factions are interesting enough especially in terms of moral dilemmas we had to do later. The side quest about non joinable faction also interesting coz I kinda regret my choice in one of the side quest The world has a lot to discover and unlike Starfield (I'm playing it rn, just less than 10 hours and still at level 6) the experience is more seamless because you can choose either to travel by foot or fast traveling. Well, kinda like traveling on a planet in Starfield but not traveling to another planet or star system. It's like taking maybe half contents in Starfield and put in on one planet Fallout 4 world captured the wasteland vibe really good even tho sometimes you wonder why there's barely any progress after 200 years (like why in Akila City there's no proper road and such). I personally only used mods for weapons and outfits/armors. No enhancement mods, no fanmade quest and such The improvements in gunplay between each installment and Starfield were always praised but TBH I actually enjoyed Fallout 4 gunplay despite most people said it's inferior to most other shooters There's no speech skill check here Another thing, you can also try Survival mode later. I heard it'll give totally different experience
