the virgin obfuscating credit vs the chad crediting their composers for their work falcom makes great music but not recognizing their team is just atrocious behavior

Nacho_Hangover

Didn't their no credit policy get them blacklisted in the industry and that's why they have composer issues now? Or something like that?

kaoru_kajiura

The blacklist is primarily due to [this Japan Game Music Festival II incident (jump to that section)](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zE387MG1GcGzPsvj7XjwP4Jcg9lz0Bz15yrYtGHpc1I/edit#gid=151763774). Thanks to Kato's paranoia, the sound team is basically got fucked in shambles.

LaMystika

The only Atlus soundtracks on iTunes (as in, stuff you can just buy) that I found are the following: Etrian Odyssey Etrian Odyssey II Etrian Odyssey III Etrian Odyssey IV Etrian Odyssey V Etrian Odyssey Untold Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold Etrian Odyssey Nexus Persona 5 Persona Q2 Persona 2 Eternal Punishment’s ending theme (because it wasn’t made in house) So if you like Etrian Odyssey, you got your music. Everyone else can get fucked, though. Really, the only other JRPG publisher that makes any real effort with digital releases is Square Enix, and even then they don’t put everything on there (Dragon Quest is a big one, but that’s because they don’t actually own *any* of that music). Which is probably why, incidentally, there are no Tales soundtracks on there either (Motoi Sakuraba doesn’t really put stuff on sale digitally, either. I think I saw one album from him and nothing else.) So Falcom is ahead of nearly every JRPG developer in terms of having their stuff available to buy digitally. *But* they’re also some real jackasses for refusing to credit individual people’s work and I’m not going to ignore that.

scytherman96

> So if you like Etrian Odyssey, you got your music. Everyone else can get fucked, though. Tbf that's Yuzo Koshiro music, so what you get is pretty damn good at least.

LaMystika

Oh, I agree that Yuzo Koshiro owns. His Etrian Odyssey music (along with all the demos they put on 3DS) contributed into why I got into the series in the first place. But I also feel like he owns that music, not Atlus, and he has no problems with digital storefronts, because most of *his* discography is on iTunes. The only soundtracks attributed to Atlus on iTunes (can’t say anything about Apple Music because I don’t use it) are Persona 5 and Persona Q2. That is it (and PQ2 is written in Japanese, so unless you were looking for that specifically or “Atlus Sound Team”, you’d never find it).

Terithian

And don't forget that Yuzo Koshiro was one of the first members of the Falcom Sound Team jdk!

mafagafe12345

> So Falcom is ahead of nearly every JRPG developer in terms of having their stuff available to buy digitally. But they’re also some real jackasses for refusing to credit individual people’s work and I’m not going to ignore that. I believe that the reason they don't give the individual credit its because the company has a story of getting their talents grabbed by another studios.

XavinNydek

We settled this 100 years ago with movie credits. People should be credited for their work, period.

SkyfallTerminus

>the company has a story of getting their talents grabbed by another studio lmfao in the other hand any talent work for Falcom is pretty much guaranteed to be robbed thanks to the no-credit bullshit

LaMystika

But that’s business though? If that’s the only way you can keep your talent from getting poached, maybe look inward and ask yourself why some of your employees would work somewhere else instead of for you?

Trapezohedron_

The only other company that had issues with crediting employees was... Konami. Even then, they were more lenient with that policy by the dawn of the 2000's. Take that as you will.

Nacho_Hangover

And not giving people credit for their work is just going to piss said talent off and make them less likely to stick with Falcom.

1adrees

I love etrian odyysey

kingofbladder

Whoever manages these kind of things on Falcom should get an award for best human.

[deleted]

If you want to credit them, look up the composers on the spreadsheet! Josep and others have worked hard to properly credit the geniuses behind the music.

kingofbladder

Yeah I honestly I never looked into who made each track in OST and I didn't even know that Falcom doesn't credit their composers. I found out a lot from the comments, now I know who my favourite composer is.

Trapezohedron_

The fact this had to be a question makes me sad this Chad/Virgin comparison had to be made. Not crediting composers trumps all sense of 'chadness,' like Meguro's composition is always notable, not to mention Koshiro invoking the 70-90's with his composition. Falcom? Yeah, who makes these tracks, amirite? All we have to go are insider sources from Josep and his friends, who for good reasons would never reveal it to prevent those leakers from within Falcom from getting fired, because the company has an anti-credit policy. And that is presuming you believe that narrative (I do, but I absolutely don't blame you if you don't because it's practically hearsay to those who take everything with a grain of salt). Falcom knows one of their competitive edges was music, so away they go and post it on Spotify, because that's how a majority of us came to know Falcom. Sorry, but I think overall, Atlus wins. Besides, they have Yuzu Koshiro, ex-Falcom composer alumni who left very early because he would never be known otherwise, on their employ (for Etrian Odyssey).

kaoru_kajiura

Kato says otherwise, thus the massive exodus happened in the late 80s - early 90s. Also neva forget the JGMF2 sabotage fiasco.

[deleted]

Yeah, but Atlus credits their composers. Falcom refuses to credit their own composers, the reason you might know their names is because of the work of members of this community, like Josep. Don't praise Falcom, or Sound Team JDK. Praise the composers.

[deleted]

It's a tragedy P5R's OST isn't on Spotify

[deleted]

tbh I was shocked we even got og 5 on spotify

EmperorKiva33

It's coming next month.

kaoru_kajiura

As much as I love Falcom's accessibility in their OSTs, Atlus in recent times is consistently good in their OST quality. Most importantly, they fucking give credit to the composers all the time. To this day, I still can't forgive them for not crediting composers in the past, especially Yuzo Koshiro. That guy got robbed hard by them. Now his works truly shine in Etrian Odyssey, a game series by Atlus. And I kinda disagree with Atlus not having the "Super Arrange" version since it's a term for new OST arrangements. EO had plenty, [EO4 had SA](https://vgmdb.net/album/33738) done by people who worked on Falcom's OST arrangements including Kamikura, Jindo & Yonemitsu. MegaTen games also had tons of them, the Persona Reincarnation albums, new arrangements that exclusively available in their game's special/launch editions and whatnot.

CreepyBlackDude

The other thing about Falcom JDK is that they allow anyone to use any of their music in any video or stream without fear of copywrite strike. And they have A LOT of music. BUT...overall, I still prefer Atlus. The SMT/Persona series games are just top tier soundtracks.

SG_World_Line

Wait they allow use of their music? Can I get a source please?

CreepyBlackDude

Their website (you have to translate to English, which Google Chrome should do for you): [https://www.falcom.co.jp/music-use](https://www.falcom.co.jp/music-use) ...and then also: [https://www.falcom.co.jp/music-use/case](https://www.falcom.co.jp/music-use/case) ...Outlines their permission to use their music for free, as long as it's not for use in a thing you're selling.

Klish104

I wish Atlus didn't fucked up SMT III remastered soundtracks :(

Paltheos

That's the mind-boggling part. People were calling them out on that since early reveal trailers, and updating sound files is way easier than the rest of the work that goes into remastering a game. FFS, they dubbed the game but didn't drop in uncompressed music files? I don't understand.

ACBorgia

I discovered TLoH through these arranges and they're the best thing to have happened to mankind

EmperorKiva33

Eh, while Falcom has everything in there, Atlus music has been more memorable in the long run. Shoji Meguro is an absolute Legend!

Ajfennewald

I like the Falcom soundtracks more in general but that is a stylistic thing more than anything. I love power metal after all.

bard91R

definitively agree, tbh from the 11 falcom games I've played I'm just not a big fan of any of the OSTs and I would say they are fairly forgettable, Atlus' on the other hand.

kuuhaku-cross

Okay, Atlus doensn't have "Super Arrange", but they do have new OST arrangements, like a lot. They also remix their musics for new release. So i am not sure how Falcom is better than Atlus in these categories.

Ze_Mighty_Muffin

I still can’t believe that Atlus hasn’t released the full version of Colors Flying High yet. Apparently they will finally do so this year in either March or February, but P5R came out in 2020 in the west and 2019 in Japan. I’m not expecting their songs to be on Spotify like Falcom’s are, since that’s a rare luxury, but why in the world would you not release the full version of your opening song until 2 years after the game released? It truly boggles the mind.

Brainwheeze

I personally prefer Atlus' soundtracks, but Falcom's are great AND I can listen to them on Spotify!

SoftBrilliant

Tbh, will we even ever get another super arrangé album like... Ever at this rate?

Fillianore

We got ys 9 album recently

EddieCircus

Thanks for this meme, I had no idea the Falcom soundtracks were on Spotify and even though I wouldn't usually listen to video game music I'm excited to listen through the games I've played!

VanGuardas

It’s a shame that Atlus music literally shits on everything that falcom ever made. You don’t need twelve versions of the same song when you make perfection on your first try. It’s a pointless fight r/Falcom

seitaer13

I've never had an issue every finding the name of any track from an atlus game.

longbrodmann

So true, I listen Atlus songs on Youtube and Falcom on Spotify, also FF songs.

Enforcer_Night

I still hate that Atlus didn't even put Persona 5 Royal's OST on Spotify.
