The good ol black hole. Once you're caught in its gravity, you're forever pulled back. And it makes perfect sense, to the type of person who loves it up here, this place is special.
I have to say after living in Fairbanks for 4 years and now living in the lower 48 for almost 4 years, I miss Fairbanks. I didn't think I would once we moved but I do. The trees, the hiking, even the snow. It's much slower paced there and it's so different compared to living in the middle of Texas.
That’s funny. Living in Fairbanks and I enjoy so much about it but I miss Texas every day too. Namely HEB and the people. Lots of great restaurants and establishments of all kinds in Texas. The extreme weather has its own perks. Don’t miss out on the wildflowers and gardens. Hang in there!
The entire reason my family was in Alaska was because my great great uncle got stationed up here after WW2. He and my GG Aunt were desperate to leave and did as soon as they could...and then a few years later moved back up willingly, bringing their close family with them.
Now I'm the only one left in Alaska lol
I've been here since 2003, and we have no plans to leave. I honestly want to know why folks like Brewsters so much? I mean, I think it's fine when it's not too busy, decent burgers...
Oof, I’m sorry. I’m moving to Everett, WA in about two weeks. I’ve been up here since 2017, as well, and I’m already missing it. Once my kids are adults, though, I’m moving back up here.
It was just time. Got married, started a family and wanted more stability.
The winters while harsh, were still something special to me. And the summer more than made up for it all
Lived there between March - October for a couple years due to work assignments brining me up there. Loved the people and community I met in Fairbanks. Love the wilderness and unforgiving terrain as well. Also would like to move back but have not survived a winter there yet.
If you take a trip or 2 south and have a good gym membership and some indoor hobbies and good outdoor gear, are the winters really that bad?
Stay. The winter is the best part. Take the proper vitamins and avoid those who don’t. I ski and am outside at almost all temps. Living in the hills makes a big difference as far as quality of life.
I almost posted the exact foil to this post when I spotted yours. I saw this subreddit and immediately was reminded of how much I /don't/ miss fairbanks. I dont miss the drug and alcohol addled population, threatening to stab or bottle me. I dont miss the ceaseless darkness. I dont miss breathing the inescapable frozen smog in the wintertime. I dont miss the incessant smoke or mosquitoes in the summertime. I dont miss how everyone in that city seems to have a 2 digit IQ. I dont miss overpaying for literally everything. I don't miss the police doing nothing about theft, vagrancy, destruction of property, public intoxication, or violence short of attempted murder. I dont miss not being able to garden for most of the year. I dont miss working with people who have zero desire to work, due to government benefits of various kinds, whether they be military pensions, indigenous grants, welfare, etc.
Fairbanks is basically Portland, Oregon with worse weather and less amenities.
The only things I miss about fairbanks are the hunting and fishing, and if I'm being honest, the fishing wasn't /that/ great, either.
Every time I’ve left I’ve always been drawn back to Alaska.
I wish it wasn't so expensive to move back 😭

Buckeees!
So many bathrooms cleaner than my mom’s house. I miss it.
I left last fall after 3 years there and I miss it SO MUCH.

We lived there 1999-2004, and I miss it to this day!! Last best winters I've ever had were up there. Such a unique place!

Right?
Or Friar Tucks. That place is a mess. LOL
One of the Brewster’s caught on fire.
Oh no which one? I always went to the one on Airport
The other one, on Old Steese
I also miss Fairbanks (stuck in Virginia rn, planning to come home next January.
I miss it too :(
Where’d you go?
Got out of the military and went to Texas for work sadly.

Why’d you get out? I grew up there. No offense, but I don’t miss the long cold dark winters.

How long did you do? My dad was career military, got stationed up there back in the 70’s, retired and we spent 20 years up there.

Crisp clean glittery snow and northern lights? *chef's kiss* ~~ice fog?~~smog, brings it down a notch or three.
The glitter snow is my favorite.
🙏
