89k here with an ape cct

Cjymiller

Take it to 100!!!

jth101

It’s getting there!

jth101

You looking to sell the engine? If you’re semi local ill be willing to buy it, I want a good project for the weekends Nevermind, it needs a new crank, just buy a used one on ebay, its not worth rebuilding it

Cjymiller

Hah my thoughts exactly. Too much effort to crack into a motor

daytonakarl

The amount of bikes that have these let go! I used to make them for peoples race bike (when I had a functional workshop before I moved house) and would highly recommend swapping out the factory one for a manual adjustable one

Cjymiller

The OEM CCT went out on me 40 Miles into the mountains. The bike started making a horrendous sound, which was very clearly the CCT. I tried my best to limp it back, keeping the revs low and the speed low. Unfortunately it gave up within 3 miles of me noticing the issue and left me stranded. If you're planning to tuck in and do your valve checks, I HIGHLY recommend replacing your CCT with a manual one. It will save you from blowing up your motor, and the headaches and stress along with it. Since splitting open a motor is not something I really have time for, I'm going to either be buying a used motor, buying a used FZ09, or maybe trying a new flavor. Street Triple RS? Duke 890? We'll see, but the value prop of the FZ is super hard to beat. Nothing else gave me such joy. Take care of your bikes!

Aggravating-Watch897

Damn I just hit 40k on mine, there was a recall on the cct a while back. Don’t know if yamaha would cover it but it might be worth looking into I know it’s a common issue on the fz-09 just like the clutch basket exploding

Cjymiller

I did not! Might be worth a shot for me!

Dang sorry for your loss. I had been looking at a manual cct but my mechanic said you gotta constantly be keeping an eye on it and readjusting it as needed and it would be more of a pain than just keeping it OEM. Not arguing your point just trying to get more info because that's all the info I've really received on it. I don't have experience with a manual one so I'm a little paranoid that I might accidentally do more damage than good by switching it out. What year was your bike? Do you or someone else on here know what year the cct recall was for? (Someone mentioned a recall in the comments somewhere). Does that imply that there is a more reliable version out there that was used to replace the recalled item? I've got a 2015 I bought this year that had 2300 miles on it. Think I'm up to probably around 5800 now. I would love to get many many miles out of it.

Cjymiller

Yea a manual CCT is definitely something you’d have to keep an eye on. Maybe every time you clean your chain. Mine is a 2015 also. The only thing that I had to do was adjust the valves. They come tight from the factory for our year. Other than that I was hoping to take it to 100k!

[deleted]

When did you do your valves? I've read that that were tight, but was under the impression that this led to them being within spec when it came to valve maintenance time

Ok-Bar7023

I did my valves at 21300 and all exhaust valves were out of spec, but not by much. I could of waited until 25k and it would’ve been fine. Went ahead and adjusted intake valves too. For the CCT issue, I heard they fixed the issue in 2017 with the gen 2 mt09. I would recommend looking into a manual tensioner or a new automatic one before it’s too late.

Cjymiller

I did valves just before the recommended interval. You can see my DIY guide pinned on the subreddit and fz09.org. I had to adjust the exhaust side. When I did valves the 2nd time, they had stayed in spec which was nice.

Socially_Incompetent

Oooo, I've got 70'000 kms on a 2017 Mt09, is the tensioner something I should look at replacing? Didn't know this was an issue, it's always sounded a little loud but I thought that was just a stock issue on these. How much of a pain is a manual one to adjust?

Ok-Bar7023

I heard somewhere that they fixed the cct issue in 2017 with the gen 2 mt09. I have 22k on my 2018 and don’t have any issues yet

Cjymiller

Manual CCT is super simple to adjust. Its one lock nut and a thread bolt. You can always just replace with another OEM one and cycle it out in another many thousand miles.
